Working with 2 tables PHP & MySQL - php

I am working on a webpage that displays list of shops. I have 2 tables, shops and shops_sched.
+-shops-+
| id | title |
+-------------shops_sched-------------+
| id | shops_id | start_date | end_date |
Basically, the program displays the list of shops from the shops table, but if a value from shops.id is found # shops_sched.shops_id the page must output shops.title + 'coming soon'.
I understand this will be easy if I just place the date fields inside the table shops but due to programming restrictions I can't. I'm working on an existing project and I'm trying to minimize changes to existing functions. I can create new PHP functions if necessary though.
In addition, I need to get all the entries from the shops table. The Program needs to return all shops.title but for those shops whose id is found # shops_sched.shops_id, the program will have to return shops.title + "Coming Soon".

must output shops.title + 'coming soon'.
So do it like this:
$shops.title = "Donut-John";
echo $shops.title." coming soon";

To join the shops and shops_sched table
$query = SELECT `title` FROM `shops` JOIN `shops_sched` ON `shops`.`id` = `shops_sched`.`shops_id` WHERE `shops_sched`.`shop_id` = 5;
$result = mysql_query($query);
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result) {
echo $row['title'] . 'coming soon';
}
For more about join you also can refer the following link
https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/join.html
http://www.tutorialspoint.com/mysql/mysql-using-joins.htm

Join the two tables :
SELECT shops.title
FROM shops INNER JOIN shops_sched ON shops.id = shops_sched.shops_id
The query should return only the the shops inside shops_sched
EDIT :
If I understood your question, try this :
SELECT shops.title, shops_sched.id
FROM shops LEFT JOIN shops_sched ON shops.id = shops_sched.shops_id
This will return all the titles, and the shops_sched.shops_id if shops.id = shops_sched.shops_id. In the other case, the hops_sched.shops_id will be null
Then you fetch the rows and if the second row is not null, print title + coming soon
Sample code : (Something like this)
$query = "SELECT `title`, 'shops_id' FROM `shops` LEFT JOIN `shops_sched` ON `shops`.`id` = `shops_sched`.`shops_id` WHERE `shops_sched`.`shop_id`";
$result = mysql_query($query);
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result) {
if($row['shops_id'] != "")
{
echo $row['title'] . ' coming soon';
}
else
{
echo $row['title'];
}
}

PHP MYSQL, two tables

I have two tables and i want to echo the total call count once each user logins:
Login
Firstname | Lastname | Login ID
------------------------------
Tyler | Durden | 3
Call Count
Name | Call Count | Open | GrandTotal
------------------------------
Tyler Durden| 100 | 33 | 133
i tried:
<?php
$result = mysqli_query($mysqli, "SELECT * FROM csvdata WHERE Name=".$_SESSION['firstname']. ' ' .$_SESSION['lastname']." ");
while($res = mysqli_fetch_array( $result )) {
echo $res['Open'].' Open Calls';
echo $res['GrandTotal'].' Grand Total Calls';
}
mysqli_close($mysqli);
?>
But its not working, i think i have to join the the two tables to get it to work. What do you think?
Assuming your Call Count table is actually called csvdata, you'll want to format your SQL request string a bit by adding single quotes around the WHERE name = part.
<?php
$result = mysqli_query($mysqli, "SELECT * FROM csvdata WHERE Name='".$_SESSION['firstname']. ' ' .$_SESSION['lastname']."' ");
while($res = mysqli_fetch_array( $result )) {
echo $res['Call Count'].' Call Count';
echo $res['Open'].' Open Calls';
echo $res['GrandTotal'].' Grand Total Calls';
}
mysqli_close($mysqli);
?>
Good practice would require that you use primary keys to facilitate joins between tables and make sure two users with the same name can be differenciated.
In that case you may want to consider replacing the Name column in your Call Count table for your loginID. This way you could get your name from the Login table (as shown below). Also, as bad as it is to have duplicated data like your user's name in both tables, you do not need your GrandTotal column since you can easily get the sum of CallCount and Open to get the exact same number. In the end, your query should look more like this (assuming your tables are called Login and CallCount).
<?php
$result = mysqli_query($mysqli, "SELECT l.FirstName, l.LastName, cc.CallCount, cc.Open, (cc.CallCount + cc.Open) AS GrandTotal FROM Login AS l JOIN CallCount AS cc ON l.LoginID = cc.LoginID WHERE l.FirstName LIKE \"".$_SESSION['firstname']."\" AND l.LastName LIKE \"".$_SESSION['lastname']."\"");
// ...
?>

PHP: Left Join 2 table and print all records

I have two table records in my database which look like this:
Table 1 with the column 1:
topic_id name
21 my computer
table 2 with columns as follows:
reply_id topic_id message
1 21 blabla
2 21 blue
In which the topic_id column in the table 2 is the foreign key of the table 1
I wanted to echo all replies in the table 2 along with the topic name (#21) in the table 1. So, I made the query like this
$q="SELECT name, message
FROM table1
LEFT JOIN table2
ON table1.topic_id = table2.topic_id
";
However, the result/ output returns the topic's name and ONLY ONE reply, but not 2 (or all) as expected. Did I miss something?
I used LEFT JOIN because some topics are still waiting for replies. In case that there is not any reply, the topic's name is still printed in browsers.
I also tried adding
GROUP BY table1.topic_id
but still NO LUCK!
Can you help? Thanks
EDIT: To clarify the question I add the php code to fetch records as follows:
As you know, The name needs to be printed only once. So, I code like this:
$tid = FALSE;
if(isset($_GET['qid']) && filter_var($_GET['qid'], FILTER_VALIDATE_INT, array('min_range'=>1) ) ){
// create the shorthand of the question ID:
$tid = $_GET['tid'];
// run query ($q) as shown above
$r = mysqli_query($dbc, $q) or die("MySQL error: " . mysqli_error($dbc) . "<hr>\nQuery: $q");
if (!(mysqli_num_rows($r) > 0) ){
$tid = FALSE; // valid topic id
}
}//isset($_GET['qid']
if ($tid) { //OK
$printtopic = FALSE; // flag variable to print topic once
while($content = mysqli_fetch_array($r, MYSQLI_ASSOC)){
if (!$printtopic) {
echo $content['name'];
$printtopic= TRUE;
}
}
} // end of $tid
// Print the messages if any:
echo $content['message'];
Try this with inner join
$q="SELECT name, message
FROM table1
INNER JOIN table2
ON table1.topic_id = table2.topic_id";
Try:
$q="SELECT table2.reply_id, table1.name, table2.message
FROM table2
LEFT JOIN table1
ON table1.topic_id = table2.topic_id
";
After struggling with this issue, I can find out that the problem is that I had to change the query to INNER JOIN and add the WHERE clause like this:
WHERE table2.reply_id = {the given topic_id}
Then it works well!
Sorry to disturb you all!

How performance is affected by storing categories as comma delimited array and extracting each in a loop?

Namastey!
I'm currently working on one of my projects where I get to one doubt.
What I'm doing is:
I have got 4 tables called:
1: project_degree
2: project_department
3: project_category
4: Projects
project_degree have got four top level degrees which are: B.tech, M.tech, M.C.A. & M.B.A.
project_department have got their respective departments such as: C.S.E, I.T., E.E.E. and so on.
Now, project_category have some categories like PHP, .NET, SAP etc.
What I'm trying to do is, I'm adding a project to database called "projects" where I'm assigning it to its degree, department and category.
Structure of projects table is as follows:
id | project name | degree_id | Dept_id | Cat_id
1 | Sample project | 1 | 3 | 4,3,6,5,9
Now as you can see above, field "cat_id" have got multiple categories where each categories ID have been separated by a comma.
Now when I call a query get all projects from the table called "projects", I want to list of categories related to that particular project and my code goes like this:
$query = mysql_query("SELECT * from projects ORDER BY id DESC");
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($query)) {
$categories = $row['cat_id'];
$cat_arr = explode(',',$categories);
$cat_size = sizeof($cat_arr);
for($i=0;$i<$cat_size;$i++) {
$get_cat = mysql_query("SELECT * from project_category WHERE id='".$cat_arr['$i']."'");
$cat_row = mysql_fetch_array($get_cat);
echo $cat_row['name']; // Here finally I'm getting categories name
}
}
So, finally I'm running nested loop and two queries to get a category name. I doubt it affect the page load time when it comes to huge data.
Is there any better alternative to this situation?
Here should be work
$query = mysql_query("SELECT * from projects ORDER BY id DESC");
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($query)) {
$get_cat = mysql_query("SELECT * from project_category WHERE id IN (" . $row['cat_id'] . ")");
$cat_row = mysql_fetch_array($get_cat);
echo $cat_row['name']; // Here finally I'm getting categories name
}
But normalization is better.
It's better to add a new table, project_has_catID where you can store project.id and cat.id as two columns (project_id and cat_id). Remove the Cat_id column in the project table.
Once done, simply select the name by the next query;
$query = mysql_query("SELECT project_category.name from project_category INNER JOIN project_has_catID phc ON phc.cat_id = project_category.id ORDER BY phc.project_id DESC");
By this, you have a list of category names. You don't have to loop with multiple database communications.
You could load all category names into an associative array first, then look up category names in this array when looping through the projects.
$categoryNames = array();
$query = mysql_query("SELECT id, name FROM project_category");
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($query))
{
$categoryNames[$row['id']] = $row['name'];
}
$query = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM projects ORDER BY id DESC");
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($query))
{
$categoryIds = explode(',', $row['cat_id']);
foreach ($categoryIds as $cat_id)
{
$cat_name = $categoryNames[$cat_id];
//do what you want with the name here
}
}
This way, you don't have to change your database structure, or the structure of your code. And you only have to execute two queries in total, so this is by far the simplest solution.
Needless to say, normalization is always better as others have indicated (never use a column that contains multiple comma-separated values), but you probably knew that and had your reasons for setting up your database tables this way.

SQL Query Grabbing data from two tables

My code right now is this
$extract = mysqli_query($dbc, "SELECT * FROM items");
$numrows = mysqli_num_rows($extract);
while($row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($extract)) {
$id = $row['i_id'];
$iname = $row['i_name'];
echo "<tr><td><a href='capture.php?item_id=$id'>$iname</a></td><td>Incomplete</td></tr>";
}
What i want to do is run a check to see if the item has already been completed.
I have a separate table that contains the information, for instance say that Item 1 has been completed then I would like to be able to change my echo to something like:
echo "<tr><td>$iname</td><td>Complete!</td></tr>";
How would I accomplish this? Would I need to use some form of a join statement?
I want to be able to display all the items in the table but not duplicate them i initially thought that an if statement on the echo to see if item complete then do this else do that
Here are the two tables
Items item_collection
------ ---------------
i_id i_id
i_name complete
caption
image
c_id
g_id
You can use join condition like this (assuming complete is a varchar field)
SELECT a.i_id, a.i_name,
CASE WHEN i_status = '1' THEN 'Complete!' ELSE 'Incomplete' END AS complete_status
FROM items a
LEFT OUTER JOIN item_collection b ON a.i_id = b.i_id
select
case
when ic.complete = 1 then 'Complete'
else 'Incomplete'
end as item_status
from items i
left join item_collection ic on i.i_id = ic.i_id
where i.i_name = 'your_item_name'
Assuming that ic.complete = 1 when item is complete.
Something along the lines of SELECT * FROM table1 WHERE table1.id not in (SELECT Id FROM table2)

Mysql array and data

Mysql query and PHP code that I'm using to get users from the database that meet certain criteria is:
$sql = mysql_query("SELECT a2.id, a2.name FROM members a2 JOIN room f ON f.myid = a2.id
WHERE f.user = 1 AND a2.status ='7' UNION SELECT a2.id, a2.name FROM members a2
JOIN room f ON f.user = a2.id WHERE f.myid = 1 AND a2.status ='7' GROUP BY id")
or die(mysql_error());
while ($r = mysql_fetch_array($sql))
{
$temp[] = '"'.$r[0].'"';
}
$thelist = implode(",",$temp);
The query that follows get the list of members with new galleries by using array from the previous query.
$ft = mysql_query("SELECT id, pic1 FROM foto WHERE id IN ($thelist) AND
pic1!='' ORDER BY date DESC LIMIT 10");
while ($f = mysql_fetch_array($ft))
{
echo $f['id']." - ".$f['pic1']."<br/>";
}
These queries working fine but I need to get the name for every user listed in second query. This data is in the first query in the column name. How can I get it listed beside '$f['id']." - ".$f['pic1']'?
While I might just alter the first query to pull the galleries at the same time, or change the second query to join and get the name, you could keep the same structure and change a few things:
In the loop after the first query when building $temp[], also build a lookup table of user id to user name:
$usernames[$r[0]] = $r[1];
Then in your output loop, use the id (assuming they are the same!) from the second query to call up the user name value you stored:
echo $f['id'] . " - " . $f['pic1'] . " - " . $usernames[$f['id']] . "<br/>";
