Get the result from data.php then convert it to javascript string - php

I don't really know what to call this. Here is my files
data.php => calculate some random numbers
jscript.js => this echos the result from data.php to a div id
but what i wanted to do on some part is get the value from data.php and then place it to
the style of the div.
$.get('jQuery/data.php?Con&userHP&perc' , { userID: xUserID } ,
function(output) {
$('#userHP').html(output).show();
var o = document.getElementById("userHealthbar");
o.style.width= result_here ;
}
);
instead of placing the result inside the div /div i want it to the style portion of the div.
P.S: i want the result from data.php to be a variable in javascript.
but i can't seem to make it work.
i hope my explanation is clear.

You should use jQuery selectors instead of document.getelementById.
Common way:
jQuery('#userHealthbar').attr('style', whateverYouGotFromPHP);
Better in this case:
jQuery('#userHealthbar').width(whateverYouGotFromPHP);
D.

If you want to return multiple things from php to javascript, you should use json.
So if you have 2 values you want to return in php, you can do:
$html = "your html string";
$value = 4; // the value you want to return
$array_to_return = array("html" => $html, "value" => $value);
echo json_encode($array_to_return); // the only thing you echo out in your php!
Then, in javascript, you can use $.getJSON instead of $.get:
$.getJSON('jQuery/data.php?Con&userHP&perc' , { userID: xUserID } ,
function(output) {
$('#userHP').html(output.html).show();
var o = document.getElementById("userHealthbar");
o.style.width= output.value ;
}
);

JavaScript PHP HighChart transform a PHP array to a javascript array

I saw other posts but it doesn't work. I am a bit confused here on how I implement an array into JS from PHP...
In the PHP file (test.php) I have :
$table = array();
while($row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result) )
{
$value=$row['value'];
$date=$row['date'];
$table[$value]=$date;
}
And in JavaScript I have :
<?php include 'test.php'; ?>
...
data: (function() {
// generate an array of random data
var data = [],
time = (new Date()).getTime(),
i;
for (i = -19; i <= 0; i++) {
data.push({
x: time + i * 1000,
y: Math.random()
});
}
return data;
So what I look for is to put $value=$row['value']; in the y : and $date=$row['date']; in the x : OR perhaps putting the entire table $table in the var data will work also .
I'm new to JavaScript, so thanks in advance..!
So in your php file....
Add a line at the bottom that converts the table to json data.
And give it a variable...
$table = array();
while($row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result) )
{
$value=$row['value'];
$date=$row['date'];
$table[$value]=$date;
}
$jsondata = json_encode($table);
Then in your other file....
echo that variable into your data object, in the javascript.
Remember to remove that whole random number generating function...(its just an example)
Echoing PHP into javascript is definitely not considered good practice though.
And it would be better to actually do an ajax call to your php file, and insert like that....I'll also show you how to do ajax.
<?php include 'test.php'; ?>
...
data: [<?php echo $jsondata;?>], //remove that function that was here..
// it was just to generate random numbers for the demo
....
}
EDIT / UPDATE For ajax...
So for ajax...instead of assigning a variable to $jsondata.
Just return it like so...(in your PHP file)
return json_encode($table);
Then for this way....you dont include('test.php') like you did before.
Instead you just have this script inside your $(document).ready(function(){....
$.getJSON('test.php', function(myJSON) {
//and inside this function you put your highcharts stuff...
//remove that function() that generates random data
// And you will put the 'myJSON' return object inside the 'data':[] array...
// Provided you have structured your data correctly for highcharts, it should work...
// If not.... it'll be a start, and you're well on your way to debugging it
}

How to send PHP variables and retrieve them with Jquery (without echo)?

I'm building a search function to retrieve XML data for a google map.
In addition to that, I want to display how many results were actually found.
I thought about doing an echo inside the actual document, however that might mess with my marker data. How would I take a PHP variable and retrieve it in Jquery after a success call?
If my PHP looked like this:
$result = mysql_query($query);
if (!$result) {
die('Invalid query: ' . mysql_error());
}
$num_rows = mysql_num_rows($result);
And Jquery like this:
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "MapSearchxml.php",
data: {
dataFromDate: FromDate,
//lalala
dataHasPatio: HasPatio
},
beforeSend: function (html) { // this happens before actual call
$("#results").html('Please Wait');
$("#searchresults").show();
$(".phpFromDate").html(FromDate);
},
success: function (data, status, jqXHR) {
//Success?
},
dataType: 'xml'
});
Might find it easier to create array in php and send JSON. At client is easy to loop over response object/array
$output=array('status'=>'', 'results'=>array());
$result = mysql_query($query);
if (!$result) {
die('Invalid query: ' . mysql_error());
}
$num_rows = mysql_num_rows($result);
if( $num_rows){
$output['status']='ok';
/* push row data to $output['results'][]; in while loop*/
}else{
$output['status']= 'No results';
}
echo json_encode( $output);
Then in jQuery:
success:function( data){
if (data.status != 'No results' ){
/* count array length*/
var count= data.results.length;
/* loop over data.results array*/
}
}
/* change dataType to "json"*/
I forgot about count and added it in jQuery...can also add a count property to the $output php array and use $num_rows to populate
Just trying out a JSON example for you, this has echo but you can do complex things with it?
Not sure if that is what your after? I get that you don't want to do echo on each variable, and you wont if using JSON.
<?php
$simple = 'simple string';
$complex = array('more', 'complex', 'object', array('foo', 'bar'));
?>
<script type="text/javascript">
var simple = '<?php echo $simple; ?>';
var complex = <?php echo json_encode($complex); ?>;
</script>
You see, what AJAX gets on success is an html code. If you AJAX a complete html page you will get it back, starting with <html> and ending with </html>. You can just make a special markap on your return html data, like [sepcial_info : 'INFO'] or somthing and then just to filter it.
Okay, I needed a bit to decipher your question, probably I'm still wrong, let's try:
What you try to do is not technically possible with what you have in mind. In short: If you do one Ajax request, you return one response. The moment the success function is called, your PHP script is already gone. So you can only pass one return value.
However what you can do is, that you make that return value a nested one, e.g. containing two parts:
The XML document you already returned
The count
That is probably your solution. If you ask how, I would add the count as a namespaced value to the XML and then process it with javascript.
As you have not shown any code here, I can not give a quick example (and I leave that as a pointer for your future questions) for your case. Add a namespace element, like an attribute is pretty simple with DOMDocument in PHP.

Use php to populate javascript array

All,
I have the following bit of code:
function addPoints() {
newpoints[0] = new Array(41.45998, 87.59643, icon0, 'Place', 'Content to open');
for(var i = 0; i < newpoints.length; i++) {
var point = new GPoint(newpoints[i][1],newpoints[i][0]);
var popuphtml = newpoints[i][4] ;
var marker = createMarker(point,newpoints[i][2],popuphtml);
map.addOverlay(marker);
}
}
There is other code around this to display the marker on my map. However this value is hardcoded. I have a PHP/mySQL database that has lat/long coordinates along with some other values. Say I have like three entries that I want to create markers for. How would I pass the addPoints function the lat/long that I got from my database so I can use it in this function correctly?
I updated my code to look like the following for the addPoints:
function addPoints(num, lat, long) {
newpoints[num] = new Array(lat, long, icon0, 'Place', 'Stuff name');
alert("The newpoints length is: "+newpoints.length);
for(var i = 1; i < newpoints.length; i++) {
var point = new GPoint(newpoints[i][1],newpoints[i][0]);
var popuphtml = newpoints[i][4] ;
var marker = createMarker(point,newpoints[i][2],popuphtml);
map.addOverlay(marker);
}
}
I call this function by doing this:
<script>
addPoints('<?php echo json_encode($num_coordinates); ?>','<?php echo json_encode($lat_coordinates); ?>', '<?php echo json_encode($long_coordinates); ?>');
</script>
It doesn't work though. When I try not to pass it to javascript and just output the lat coordinates for example. I get the following output:
{"1":"40.59479899","2":"41.4599860"}
Which are the correct coordinates in my array. No markers get created though. Any ideas on what to do next or what I'm doing wrong?
An easy and clean way to pass an array from PHP to JavaScript is to simply echo the json_encode version of the array.
$array = array(1,2,3,4,5,6);
echo 'var values = '.json_encode($array).';';
PHP executes on the server before getting sent to the the client. Therefor, if you can do things like this:
newpoints[0] = new Array(<?php echo $lattitude;?>, <?php echo $longitude;?>, icon0, 'Place', 'Content to open');
Where $lattitude and $longitude are values that you pulled out of you database with PHP.
When this page is requested by the client, your php code executes, real values get plugged in where those php tags are making it look like the example you provided, and then it gets sent to the client.
If you want to change these values using JS on the client, or fetch new ones from the server, let me know and I'll add an example of that.
EDIT:
Okay, in light of your comments, it sounds like you've got a few options. Here's one:
When the user selects a category (restaurants, bars, etc) you pass that category as a url parameter and reload either the whole page, or just the map part of it (depends on your set up but might be worth investigating). Your link would look something like this:
http://www.your-domain-here.com/maps.php?category=bars
Maps.php is ready to catch the category using the $_GET array:
$category = $_GET['category']; //'bars'
Your php then grabs the appropriate location data from the database (I'll leave that part to you) and sticks it in a variable that your JS-controlled map will be able to use:
//JS in maps.php - you could add this var to the window object
// if you have separated js files...
var locationCoords = <?php echo json_encode($arrayOfCoordinatesFromDB);?>;
When you page loads on the client machine, it now has an array of coordinates to use for the map ready to go in the locationCoords variable.
Then, depending on which coordinates you need to display on the map, you pass them as arguments to your addPoints() using standard Javascript (nothing tricky here).
That's how I'd do it. Hope that helps!
It is as simple as echoing the php values.
new Array(<?php echo $php_lat;?>, <?php echo $php_long;?>, icon0 etc...
I made a dynamic banner with this javascript array initialization. It works fine when the javascript is embedded in php.
<?php
// This is our php array with URLs obtained from the server
$urlsPHP = ["img/img01.jpg","img/img02.jpg","img/img03.jpg"];
return = "
//...Some HTML...
<script type='text/javascript'>
// Now we use this inside the javascript
var urlsJavaScript = ".stripslashes(json_encode($urlsPHP)).";
//...Some javascript style to animate the banner...
</script>
";
// if we print this:
echo stripslashes(json_encode($urlsPHP));
// We obtain:
// ["img/banner/bak01.jpg","img/banner/bak02.jpg","img/banner/bak03.jpg"]
// This is a good syntax to initialize our javascript array
// if we print this:
echo json_encode($urlsPHP);
// We obtain:
// ["img\/banner\/bak01.jpg","img\/banner\/bak02.jpg","img\/banner\/bak03.jpg"]
// This is not a good syntax to initialize our javascript URLs array
?>

How do I use php to feed data to jQuery autocomplete?

I'm trying to build a form where certain text fields and text areas have autocomplete.
I've used the formidable plugin for wordpress to build my form. I'm using the jQuery autocomplete plugin for the autocomplete part.
The code looks like this:
<script>
$(document).ready(function(){
var data = "Core Selectors Attributes Traversing Manipulation CSS Events Effects Ajax Utilities".split(" ");
$("#example").autocomplete(data);
});
</script>
So basically I need to use php to pull data from the mysql database and feed it to that data var. I'm a php newbie, so I'm not sure how to do this. A coder who works on the formidable plugin suggested the following code for the var data part:
<?php
global $frm_entry_meta;
$entries = $frm_entry_meta->get_entry_metas_for_field($field_id, $order='');
?> //db_frm_entry_metas is the name of the mysql db that stores the values for every field from the form. I suspect get_entry_metas_for_field is a function added by the formidable plugin. $field_id is the id for a given field on the form.
var data = new Array();
<?php foreach($entries as $value){ ?>
data[] = <?php echo $value ?>;
<?php } ?>
I tried to run this code with an id number in the place of $field_id, but it didn't work. I'm stuck here.
I can understand most of the code, except for this part:
var data = new Array();
<?php foreach($entries as $value){ ?>
data[] = <?php echo $value ?>
I don't get what the data[] is doing there... should the php be feeding the data to the var data= line?
I have around 15 form text/textarea fields, each of which needs to pull data associated with its given field_id. Unless there's an easier way to do this, this means I'll have to write 15 scripts, each with a particular $field_id and jQuery object with field's css selector.
Any help getting this to work would be much appreciated!
The coder is wrong, this:
data[] = something;
will cause a syntax-error in JS, it's a PHP-shorthand for pushing members to an array and doesn't work in JS.
Try this:
data.push(unescape('<?php echo rawurlencode($value); ?>');
According to the autocomplete docs, you can pass a url as the data parameter. That being said, do something such as the following:
<?php
// --- PLACE AT VERY TOP OF THE SAME FILE ---
$search = isset($_GET['q']) && !empty($_GET['q']) ? $_GET['q'] : null;
if (!is_null($search))
{
$matches = Array();
// some search that populates $matches based on what the value of $search is
echo implode("\r\n",$matches);
exit;
}
?>
then, in your jQuery code replace the .autocomplete(data) with .autocomplete('<?php echo $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']; ?>');
your jquery will be something like this
$("#example").change(function(){
$.ajax(
{
type: "POST",
url: "php_page.php",
data: "data=" + $("#example").val(),
beforeSend: function() {
// any message or alert you want to show before triggering php_page.php
},
success: function(response) {
eval(response);
// print your results
}
});
});
in your php page after getting all info echo the results like this.
echo "var result=" . json_encode($results);
then eval(response) jquery function will give you javascript variable result with your results in it.
Hope this helps...

Unable to retrieve data using jQuery.post

I'm trying to use jQuery.post() function to retrieve some data. But
i get no output.
I have a HTML that displays a table. Clicking this table should trigger a jQuery.post event.
My scriptfile looks like this:
jQuery(document).ready(function() {
jQuery('#storeListTable tr').click(function() {
var storeID = this.cells[0].innerHTML; //This gets me the rowID for the DB call.
jQuery.post("../functions.php", { storeID: "storeID" },
function(data){
alert(data.name); // To test if I get any output
}, "json");
});
});
My PHP file looks like this:
<?php
inlcude_once('dal.php');
//Get store data, and ouput it as JSON.
function getStoreInformation($storeID)
{
$storeID = "9";//$_GET["storeID"];
$sl = new storeLocator();
$result = $sl->getStoreData($storeID);
while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) {
{
$arr[] = $row;
}
$storeData = json_encode($arr);
echo $storeData; //Output JSON data
}
?>
I have tested the PHP file, and it outputs the data in JSON format. My only problem now is to return this data to my javascript.
since the javascript is located in the /js/ folder, is it correct to call the php file by using '../'?
I don't think I'm passing the storeID parameter correctly. What is the right way?
How can I call the getStoreInformation($storeID) function and pass on the parameter? The jQuery example on jQuery.com has the following line: $.post("test.php", { func: "getNameAndTime" }
Is the getNameAndTime the name of the function in test.php ?
I have gotten one step further.
I have moved the code from inside the function(), to outside. So now the php code is run when the file is executed.
My js script now looks like this:
jQuery('#storeListTable tr').click(function() {
var storeID = this.cells[0].innerHTML;
jQuery.post("get_storeData.php", { sID: storeID },
function(data){
alert(data);
}, "text");
});
This results in an alert window which ouputs the store data as string in JSON format.
(because I have changed "json" to "text").
The JSON string looks like this:
[{"id":"9","name":"Brandstad Byporten","street1":"Jernbanetorget","street2":null,"zipcode":"0154","city":"Oslo","phone":"23362011","fax":"22178889","www":"http:\/\/www.brandstad.no","email":"bs.byporten#brandstad.no","opening_hours":"Man-Fre 10-21, L","active":"pending"}]
Now, what I really want, is to ouput the data from JSON.
So I would change "text" to "json" and "alert(data)" to "alert(data.name)".
So now my js script will look like this:
jQuery('#storeListTable tr').click(function() {
var storeID = this.cells[0].innerHTML;
jQuery.post("get_storeData.php", { sID: storeID },
function(data){
alert(data.name);
}, "json");
});
Unfortunately, the only output I get, is "Undefined".
And if I change "alert(data.name);" to "alert(data);", the output is "[object Object]".
So how do I output the name of teh store?
In the PHP file, I've tried setting $storeID = $_GET["sID"]; But I don't et the value. How can I get the value that is passed as paramter in jQuery.post ?
(currently I have hardcoded the storeID, for testing)
Lose the quotes around "storeID":
Wrong:
jQuery.post("../functions.php", { storeID: "storeID" }
Right:
jQuery.post("../functions.php", { storeID: storeID }
bartclaeys is correct. As it is right now, you are literally passing the string "storeID" as the store ID.
However, a couple more notes:
It might seem weird that you will be setting storeID: storeID - why is only the second one being evaluated? When I first started I had to triple check everytime that I wasn't sending "1:1" or something. However, keys aren't evaluated when you are using object notation like that, so only the second one will be the actual variable value.
No, it is not correct that you are calling the PHP file as ../ thinking of the JS file's location. You have to call it in respect of whatever page has this javascript loaded. So if the page is actually in the same directory as the PHP file you are calling, you might want to fix that to point to the right place.
Kind of tied to the previous points, you really want to get your hands on Firebug. This will allow you to see AJAX requests when they are sent, if they successfully make it, what data is being sent to them, and what data is being sent back. It is, put simply, the consensus tool of choice to debug your Javascript/AJAX application, and you should have it, use it, and cherish it if you don't want to waste another 6 days debugging a silly mistake. :)
EDIT As far as your reply, if you break down what you are returning:
[
{
"id":"9",
"name":"Brandstad Byporten",
"street1":"Jernbanetorget",
"street2":null,
"zipcode":"0154",
"city":"Oslo",
"phone":"23362011",
"fax":"22178889",
"www":"http:\\/www.brandstad.no",
"email":"bs.byporten#brandstad.no",
"opening_hours":"Man-Fre 10-21, L",
"active":"pending"
}
]
This is actually an array (the square brackets) containing a single object (the curly braces).
So when you try doing:
alert(data.name);
This is not correct because the object resides as the first element of the array.
alert(data[0].name);
Should work as you expect.
Your JSON is returned as a javascript array... with [] wrapping the curly bits [{}]
so this would work.
wrong: alert(data.name);
right: alert(data[0].name);
Hope that helps.
D
Ok, thanks to Darryl, I found the answer.
So here is the functional code for anyone who is wondering about this:
javascript file
jQuery(document).ready(function() {
jQuery('#storeListTable tr').click(function() {
jQuery.post("get_storeData.php", { storeID: this.cells[0].innerHTML }, // this.cells[0].innerHTML is the content ofthe first cell in selected table row
function(data){
alert(data[0].name);
}, "json");
});
});
get_storeData.php
<?php
include_once('dal.php');
$storeID = $_POST['storeID']; //Get storeID from jQuery.post parameter
$sl = new storeLocator();
$result = $sl->getStoreData($storeID); //returns dataset from MySQL (SELECT * from MyTale)
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result))
{
$data[] = array(
"id"=>($row['id']) ,
"name"=>($row['name']));
}
$storeData = json_encode($data);
echo $storeData;
?>
Thanks for all your help guys!
