I have an test project in sub directory (G:/wamp/www/test) which has only index.php and .htaccess
I tried to make friendly urls by adding RewriteRule to .htaccess like this:
RewriteEngine on
DirectoryIndex index.php
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^/*$ index.php
This worked on all other projects but it is not working on this one. When I want to access an URL like this:
http://localhost/test/TESTING_URL I am getting default 404 Not Found page. However, if I go like this: http://localhost/test/index.php/TESTING_URL - it works.
Apache error log is giving me the following error:
File does not exist: G:/wamp/www/test/TESTING_URL
The following worked for me:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /test/
DirectoryIndex index.php
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^/*$ index.php
Make sure that this .htaccess file is in the directory test and that there aren't any conflicting rewrite rules in any .htaccess file at a higher level.
Otherwise the only difference is the addition of the RewriteBase line.

Firstly assuming the br in your code are mistakes and not that you're writing HTML inside a .htaccess file.
The pattern in your rewrite rule has both a slash in the RewriteBase and the RewriteRule, so it's looking for something like /file_name//booknow/ You should instead type:
RewriteRule ^booknow($|/) - [L]
I got my own answer. I create a .htaccess File in WordPress directory booknow folder then I added below code to .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{file_now/booknow} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php [NC,L]
ErrorDocument 404 /file_now/booknow/404page.php
Now My Booknow folder is properly working.

which is in index.php i am including main.php. So when user enters index.php, it will redirect to main.php in an instant.
I want to hide it so that the url looks like this,
http://192.168.101.103:7777/WeltesMart/

I wish to have two Codeigniter installations one in my default root root/ and one in root/en. Problem is in my .htaccess file and in the location of default controller. Everything works in my default install, I have the default/front controller in the following directoy: root/public/index.php and my .htaccess looks like this in order to redirect and remove "public" from the url:

Everything is fine in root, server automaticly redirects to root/public/index.php folder and reads "index.php" there, .htaccess then hides the "public/index.php" part of the url.

Which works allmost perfect.
It rewerites urls like http://domain.com/something/ to the public/index.php file, like a charm, except when it is a file, just like it should.
However http://domain.com (without any path appended) (there is no index.php in the root, so it gives a 404 at the moment) is not being rewrited, how can I change this .htaccess so it rewrites this url too?
The index file is in public/index.php I want it to load that file through the use of .htaccess

I believe to rewrite the root, you can simply do something along the lines of:
RewriteRule ^$ location/of/root/file [L]
You could try:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ public/index.php
RewriteBase should prepend the rule pattern with a leading slash, forcing it to match the root path.

What you have there is inspired by WordPress?? It's a bad idea as it tell Apache to always check if the path is a file or a directory before redirecting.
I have something like this

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !\.(swf|ico|php|xml)$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !robots.txt
RewriteRule (.*) index.php?page=$1&%{QUERY_STRING} [PT]
The first condition restricts this redirect from working in specific folders.
The seconds does it for specific extensions.

I am new to url re-writng and is currently facing problems with rewriting url for multiple applications in codeigniter. I have scanned the whole stackoverflow with some potential answers but it is still not solving my problems entirely

I can get what I desire at the front end with the above .htaccess, but I can't get it working on my back end. Basically, www.domain.com/admin gives a 404 page not found error.
Please advice me on the problem. Also, please guide me on where I should place this .htaccess file? at the root? inside the application folder? or inside the frontend and administrator folder respectively.

Why not something like this in your root directory.
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|update\.php|assets|admin|robots\.txt|favicon\.ico)
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L]
This will basically ignore any directories such as "admin" to route to the frontend application. You will have to set your config.php and remove index.php from the controller.
Found a way to work with this problem already. It is not a very smart way of doing it but it at least worked.
First, I created an 'admin' folder in the root, with a copy of the application's index.php
Which effectively make my directory looking like this.
-admin
--.htaccess
--index.php
-application
--frontend
--administrator
-index.php
-.htaccess
For this solution you will need to have two .htaccess files in different location.
For the .htaccess at the root, it should look like this.

While this works on localhost, it is noteworthy that it may not work on rented servers because the file system in your host may be different.
