I'm looking for the best solution to perform PHP MYSQL searching but I don't want to use Sphinx, I'm using Nginx under Linux.
Take a look at Solr : http://lucene.apache.org/solr/
Choosing a search solution depends on a few things like:
Amount of data
Complexity of that data
How often will you use search?
How advanced will those searched be?
There are others like Lucene: http://lucene.apache.org/

I really enjoyed Rails for Zombies and the myriad of online courses teaching Rails.
This is the best way to learn for me: jump right in with a project and a reference book basically.
Is there a PHP course out there like that that you can recommend?
PS. I'm interested in making themes/plugins for Wordpress but I find that my knowledge of PHP itself is pretty weak, so it'd be neat to do some novice course.
I haven't actually used this site, but it appears to be similar to RfZ based on using video as the delivery media:

As a note, some content is free and some is not.

I'm looking into freelancing PHP projects on my spare time so I'm revisiting my rusty PHP skills. I believe contributing to an open source project could refresh me quickly. Also, if you have other suggestion please feel free to suggest. Thanks!

I am looking for a good (stable enough, intuitive enough, and the more technologically modern and advanced - the better) free PHP-based online groupware/collaboration system. 100% UTF-8 is a requirement. OOP-style code is an advantage. And collaborative mindmapping would be a cool feature to have. The team is of ~20 people. Any suggestions?
You could take a look at Horde. I've only tangentially been involved with it, but it seems to meet all of your requirements.
