How to make echo results in table hyperlinks - php

I have retrieved data from DB and inserted into a html table however I want to make each value in the table a hyperlink to another page. Below I have tried making the pupil_id and link to a profile.php but all pupil_id values have now vanished!
(if (!isset($_POST['search'])) {
$pupils = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM pupil") or die("Cant find Pupils");
$count = mysql_num_rows($pupils);
if ($count == 0) {
$totalpupil = "There are currently no Pupils in the system.";
} else {
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($pupils)) {
?>
<tr>
<td><?php echo '<a href="profile.php?id=' .$row['pupil_id'] . '"</a>' ?></td>
<td><?php echo $row['pupil_name'] ?></td>
<td><?php echo $row['class_id'] ?></td>
</tr>
<?php
}
}
})
The finishing table should display every hyperlink as a hyperlink to another page. Any help?

Because your HTML is invalid, you are missing a closing > and you have no text defined for the hyperlink
<?php echo '<a href="profile.php?id=' .$row['pupil_id'] . '"</a>' ?> //Wrong
Correct would be
<?php echo ''.$row['pupil_id'].''; ?>

Try replace this:
<?php echo '<a href="profile.php?id=' .$row['pupil_id'] . '"</a>' ?>
with this:
<?php echo "<a href='profile.php?id=".$row['pupil_id']."'>link</a>"; ?>
Also, you dont have <table> tags at all.

You don't put any text between your link tags, text here
Maybe this will help you:
<td><?php echo ''.$row['pupil_name'].'' ?></td>

http://uk3.php.net/mysql_query
Watch out, which ever resource you are learning from may well be quite old. mysql_query is now deprecated.
http://uk3.php.net/manual/en/ref.pdo-mysql.php is a replacement.
Here is a kick starter to using PDO (this is much much safer) i write a while ago.
Include this file in which ever php script needs to access your db. An example file name would be 'database.php' but that is your call. Set the namespace from 'yourproject' to whatever your project is called. Correct the database credentials to suit your database
This will save you a lot of headaches hopefully!
I have given some example uses at the bottom for you. I remember when i started out getting clear advice was sometimes hard to come by.
//***** in a database class file*****/
namespace yourproject;
class Database {
private $db_con = '';
/*** Function to login to the database ***/
public function db_login()
{
// Try to connect
try{
// YOUR LOGIN DETAILS:
$db_hostname = 'localhost';
$db_database = 'yourdatabasename';
$db_username = 'yourdatabaseusername';
$db_password = 'yourdatabasepassword';
// Connect to the server and select database
$this->db_con = new \PDO("mysql:host=$db_hostname;dbname=$db_database",
"$db_username",
"$db_password",
array(\PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_INIT_COMMAND => "SET NAMES utf8"));
// Prevent emulation of prepared statements for security
$this->db_con->setAttribute(\PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES, false);
$this->db_con->setAttribute(\PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, \PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION);
return true;
}
// If it fails, send user to maintenance page
catch(PDOException $e)
{
header("location:http://yourwebsiteurl.com/maintenance.php");
exit();
}
}
/*** Function for database control ***/
public function db_control($query , $parameters, $returnID = false)
{
if(!is_array($query) && is_array($parameters))
{
try{
//prepare the statement
$statement = $this->db_con->prepare($query);
//execute the statement
$statement->execute($parameters);
//check whether this is a select, if it is then we need to retrieve the selected data
if(strpos($query, 'SELECT') !== false)
{
//fetch the results
$result = array();
while( $row = $statement->fetch(\PDO::FETCH_ASSOC) )
{
$result[] = $row;
}
//count the results
$count = count($result);
//return the array
return array( 'results' => $result, 'result_count' => $count );
}
//else return the number of affected rows
else{
//count the affected rows and place into a returnable array
$affected_rows = $statement->rowCount();
$returnArray = array('result_count' => $affected_rows);
//check to see if we are to return a newly inserted autoincrement ID from an INSERT
if($returnID)
{
//find the newly created ID and add this data to the return array
$insertID = $this->db_con->lastInsertId();
$returnArray['ID'] = $insertID;
}
return $returnArray;
}
}
catch(PDOException $e)
{
return false;
}
}
else{
return false;
}
}
}
// Start the database class and connect to the database then create a globally accessible function for ease of reference
$db = new \yourproject\Database();
$db->db_login();
function _db( $sql , $params , $returnID = false ){
return $GLOBALS['db']->db_control( $sql , $params , $returnID );
}
When you include this file you now have a new function: _db(). As the function is global it can be called from within any class or std file. When called into a variable as demonstrated below will result in an array like this:
array(
'result_count' => 3,
'results' => array(
array(/*row 1*/),
array(/*row 2*/),
array(/*row 3*/),
.. etc etc
)
)
Now include your database file in your php script:
//call in the database file
require_once 'database.php';
//your query as in the op
$sql = 'SELECT * FROM pupil';
//your params for the query
$params = array();
//running the query and getting the results returned into a variable called $query
$query = _db($sql,$params);
//if no results
if( $query['result_count'] == 0 )
{
echo 'sorry no pupils in the system';
}
else
{
//looping through each result and printing into a html table row
for( $i = 0 ; $i < $query['result_count'] ; ++$i )
{
echo '<tr><td><a href="profile.php?id=' . $query['results'][$i]['pupil_id'] . '"</a></td>';
echo '<td>'. $query['results'][$i]['pupil_name'] . '</td>';
echo '<td>'. $query['results'][$i]['class_id'] . '</td></tr>';
}
}
Your original query but with some parameters passed through
//Passing parameters to the query
//your query
$sql = 'SELECT * FROM pupil WHERE pupil_id = :pupil_id AND class_id = :class_id';
//your params for the query
$params = array(
':pupil_id' => 12,
':class_id' => 17,
);
//running the query and getting the results returned into a variable called $query
$query = _db($sql,$params);
//deal with the results as normal...
If you set the 3rd param as true you can return the automatic id of the row just entered eg:
//where $sql is a query that will INSERT a row
$query = _db($sql,$params, true);

INSERT not complete before SELECT query

I have a PHP script that is split into two separate PHP scripts (As they each serve a purpose and are quite lengthy). For simplicity let's call these 1.php and 2.php.
Script 1.php does an API call to a website passes the payload to a function. Once has truncated and inserted the new records into the table, it then includes the 2nd script. This is where the issue begins. Seemingly when I query the marketPlace table it returns a null array however if I insert a sleep(1) before I include 2.php it works! I can only summize that somehow the truncate and insert queries in 1.php had not completed before the next queries were called? (I've never come across this before!).
There is only one database connection and is defined by a database class which is contained in 1.php:
class Database
{
// This class allows us to access the database from any function with ease
// Just call it with Database::$conn
/** TRUE if static variables have been initialized. FALSE otherwise
*/
private static $init = FALSE;
/** The mysqli connection object
*/
public static $conn;
/** initializes the static class variables. Only runs initialization once.
* does not return anything.
*/
public static function initialize()
{
Global $servername;
Global $username;
Global $password;
Global $dbname;
try {
if (self::$init===TRUE)return;
self::$init = TRUE;
self::$conn = new mysqli($servername, $username, $password, $dbname);
}
catch (exception $e) {
date('Y-m-d H:i:s',time()) . " Cant' connect to MySQL Database - re-trying" . PHP_EOL;
}
}
public static function checkDB()
{
if (!mysqli_ping(self::$conn)) {
self::$init = FALSE;
self::initialize();
}
}
}
The function that trunctated and inserted into the marketplace is:
function processMarketplace($marketData) {
// Decode to JSON
$outputj = json_decode($marketData, true);
$marketplaceCounter = 0;
// Check for success
if (($outputj['success']==true) && (!stristr($marketData, "error"))) {
// Create the blank multiple sql statement
$sql = "TRUNCATE marketplace;"; // Clears down the current marketPlace table ready for new INSERTS
//Loop through each multicall
foreach ($outputj['multiCall'] as $orderBook) {
foreach ($orderBook['marketplace'] as $orderLine) {
$type = $orderLine['type'];
$price = $orderLine['amountCurrency'];
// Add new SQL record (This ignores any duplicate values)
$sql .="INSERT IGNORE INTO marketplace (type, price) VALUES ('" . $type . "'," . $price . ");";
}
$marketplaceCounter++;
}
// Now run all the SQL's to update database table
if (strlen($sql) > 0) {
if (Database::$conn->multi_query($sql) === TRUE) {
echo mysqli_error(Database::$conn);
//echo "New records created successfully";
} else {
echo mysqli_error(Database::$conn);
echo "Error: " . $sql . "<br>" . Database::$conn->error;
}
}
echo date('Y-m-d H:i:s',time()) . " == Marketplace Orderbook retreived == <BR><BR>" . PHP_EOL;
} else {
echo date('Y-m-d H:i:s',time()) . " Failed to get Marketplace data. Output was: " . $marketData . "<BR>" . PHP_EOL;
die();
}
}
I've chased this around for hours and hours and I really don't understand why adding the sleep(1) delay after I have called the processMarketplace() function helps. I've also tried merging 1.php and 2.php together as one script and this yields the same results. 2.php simply does a SELECT * FROM marketPlace query and this returns NULL unless i have the sleep(1).
Am I missing something easy or am I approaching this really badly?
I should add I'm using InnoDB tables.
This is how its called in 1.php:
$marketData = getData($user,$api); // Get Marketplace Data
processMarketplace($marketData); // Process marketplace data
sleep(1); // Bizzare sleep needed for the select statement that follows in 2.php to return non-null
include "2.php"; // Include 2nd script to do some select statements on marketPlace table
2.php contains the following call:
$typeArray = array('1','2','3');
foreach ($typeArray as $type) {
initialPopulate($type);
}
function initialPopulate($type) {
// Reset supplementary prices
mysqli_query(Database::$conn, "UPDATE marketPlace SET price_curr = '999999' WHERE type='" . $type . "'");
echo mysqli_error(Database::$conn);
// Get marketplace data <--- This is the one that is strangely returning Null (after the first loop) unless I place the sleep(1) before including 1.php
$query = "SELECT * FROM marketPlace WHERE type='" . $type . "'";
$result = mysqli_query(Database::$conn, $query);echo mysqli_error(Database::$conn);
$resultNumRows = mysqli_num_rows($result);echo mysqli_error(Database::$conn);
// Create array from mysql data
$rows = array();
while($r = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result)) {
$rows[] = $r;
}
// Get information from the offertypes table
$query2 = "SELECT offerID FROM queryTypes WHERE type='" . $type . "'";
$result2 = mysqli_query(Database::$conn, $query2);echo mysqli_error(Database::$conn);
// Create array from mysql data
$rows2 = array();
while($r2 = mysqli_fetch_row($result2)) {
$rows2[] = $r2;
}
// Loop through marketplace data and apply data from the offertypes table
$sql1 = ""; // Create a blank SQL array that we will use to update the database
$i = 0;
foreach ($rows as $row) {
$sql1 .= "UPDATE marketPlace SET enrichmentType = " . $rows2[$i][0] . " WHERE type='" . $type . "';";
$i++;
}
// Now run all the SQL's to update database table
if (strlen($sql1) > 0) {
if (Database::$conn->multi_query($sql1) === TRUE) {
echo mysqli_error(Database::$conn);
//echo "New records created successfully";
} else {
echo mysqli_error(Database::$conn);
echo "Error: " . $sql1 . "<br>" . Database::$conn->error;
}
}
}
You are using mysqli:multi_query.
Unlike query, multi_query does not retrieve the results immediately. Retrieving the results must be done using mysqli::use_result
An example from the documentation:
/* execute multi query */
if ($mysqli->multi_query($query)) {
do {
/* store first result set */
if ($result = $mysqli->use_result()) {
while ($row = $result->fetch_row()) {
printf("%s\n", $row[0]);
}
$result->close();
}
/* print divider */
if ($mysqli->more_results()) {
printf("-----------------\n");
}
} while ($mysqli->next_result());
}
You don't need to print the results, but if you don't retrieve them, you are not guaranteed the INSERT has completed.
Note in the documentation for use_result at
https://www.php.net/manual/en/mysqli.use-result.php
it states
"Either this or the mysqli_store_result() function must be called
before the results of a query can be retrieved, and one or the other
must be called to prevent the next query on that database connection
from failing."
As a result of not calling store_result or use_result, you are having unpredictable results.

proper way to check if input "promo code" matches with a database column

I would like to ask, what will be the best way to code using SQL and PHP, on how to check if the input in a textfield matches with a value in an SQL column?
I only have three values in the table. my targets are:
retrieve (POST) the value of the input
check the whole column to see if any matches the "promo code" typed
the "tinyint" used value will turn to 1
echo or affect other database tables if conditions are met
pseudocode will be alright, I would just like the proper procedure.
UPDATE: I tried the solution from #Bitwise Creative, im not getting an echo to appear, which part did i do wrong? also, i got my db where the table is located using a variable.
<form method="get">
<input type="text" name="lux_code" placeholder="ENTER PROMO CODE" style="text-align:center;">
<input type="submit" class="full_width btn color-white mwc-orange-background-color" name="redeem" value="REDEEM">
</form>
<?php
$routePath = "../";
require_once($routePath . "_config/db.php");
$dbConfig = new config_db();
$db = $dbConfig->init();
if (isset($_POST['redeem']) && $_POST['redeem'] == 'REDEEM'){
if (isset($_POST['lux_code']) && $_POST['lux_code']) {
// Short-cutting the DB code for demonstration...
$rows = $db->query('SELECT * FROM promocode_3 WHERE coupon_code = ? AND used = ?', array($_POST['lux_code'], 0));
if (!$rows) {
// Code not found (however you want to handle that...)
echo 'Code not found.';
} else {
// Code found and marked as used in DB
$db->query('UPDATE promocode_3 SET used = ? WHERE coupon_code = ?', array(1, $_POST['lux_code']));
// Additional handling...
echo 'Code accepted!';
}
}
}
?>
Assuming coupon_code has a unique index... Something like:
<?php
if (isset($_POST['code']) && $_POST['code']) {
// Short-cutting the DB code for demonstration...
$rows = $db->query('SELECT * FROM coupons WHERE coupon_code = ? AND used = ?', array($_POST['code'], 0));
if (!$rows) {
// Code not found (however you want to handle that...)
echo 'Code not found.';
} else {
// Code found and marked as used in DB
$db->query('UPDATE coupons SET used = ? WHERE coupon_code = ?', array(1, $_POST['code']));
// Additional handling...
echo 'Code accepted!';
}
}
You can do like this-
$couponcode = $_POST['coupon'];
$sql = "update table_name set used = 1 where coupon_code = $couponcode && used = 0";
The best way is to retrieve all your unused coupon codes and then iterate over the collection and check if the posted value is a match.
I would write a function in my functions.php file as so:
function getCoupons() {
global $db;
try {
$stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT * FROM coupons WHERE `used` = 0");
$stmt->execute();
return $stmt->fetchall();
} catch (Exception $e) {
echo $e->getMessage();
}
}
I would then call the function and store the results into an array in my test.php file like so:
$coupons = getCoupons();
I would also need the posted value, I'll retrieve it like so:
$couponCode = $_POST['coupon'];
I would then iterate over the result set to check for a match in the same file:
$match = false;
foreach($coupons as $coupon){
if($coupon['coupon_code'] == $couponCode){ //check to see if posted value matches
$match = true;
$stmt2 = $db->prepare("UPDATE coupons SET used =
'1' WHERE p3id = :id");
$stmt2->execute(array(
':id'=>$coupon['id']
));
break;
}
}
if($match){
echo 'Coupon code exists!';
} else {
echo 'No Coupon code exists!';
}

PDO and While function in PHP not working

Hey guys so i really have a problem in php and i have been working on it for like an hour and i can get it to work. So in my database i have two tables:
usuarios and menus
So each user have a menu assigned like this:
usuarios
id email ....... menus
1 email ...... 1,2,3,4
where 1,2,3,4 is text that i will explode and convert it into an array so latter i can get the menus checking the menu id's.
menus
id url .....
1 profile ..........
2 messages ..........
3 log out ..........
4 support ..........
I dont know why it is not working, please help.
<?php
if (!empty($_SESSION['id'])) {
include_once "database.php";
$section = !empty($_GET['s']);
try {
$stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT * FROM usuarios WHERE id=:usuid");
$stmt->execute(array(':usuid'=>$_SESSION['id']));}
// Checks the user id from his session (session has been already started in headers)
if($stmt->rowCount() > 0){
$row = $stmt->fetch();
$menus = $row['menus'];
//Gets the menus
$menus = explode(",", $menus);
//Converts the text into an array.
$i = 0;
$menusize = sizeof($menus);
//Checks how big is $menus array
$menusize = $menusize -1;
//This is because $i=0 and not 1
while ($i == $menusize) {
try{
$stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT * FROM menus WHERE id=:menus");
$stmt->execute(array(':menus'=>$menus[$i]));
$row = $stmt->fetch();
if ($section==$row['url']) {
echo '<li class="liselected"><i class="'.$row['icon'].'"></i><p>'.$row['name'].'</p></li>';
}else{
echo '<li class="menuelement"><i class="'.$row['icon'].'"></i><p>'.$row['name'].'</p></li>';
}
$i++;
} catch(PDOException $e) {
echo 'ERROR: ' . $e->getMessage();
}
}
//Here is the problem, in this while
} else {
}
} catch(PDOException $e) {
echo 'ERROR: ' . $e->getMessage();
}
}else{
header("Location:index.php");
}
?>
I have checked and what happends is that $i doesnt seems to be incrementing, i have been working on it but nothing seems to do it.
Thank you all for your support!
You should do it a little bit differently altogether, like storing the menu's in different rows but for now:
<?php
if (!empty($_SESSION['id'])) {
include_once "database.php";
$section = !empty($_GET['s']);
try {
# When you set the $_SESSION['id'] and you're sure it's sanitized you don't have to prepare a query. Instead execute it directly.
# Preparing is useful for user submitted data or running the same query more then once with different values (seen below)
$stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT * FROM usuarios WHERE id=:usuid");
$stmt->execute(array(':usuid'=>$_SESSION['id']));
} catch(PDOException $e) {
echo 'ERROR: ' . $e->getMessage();
}
if($stmt->rowCount() > 0){
// This part of the code does not match your description of your database.
$row = $stmt->fetch();
$menu = explode(",", $row['menus']);
// end
$stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT * FROM menus WHERE id=:menus");
try{
foreach($menu as $value){
$stmt->execute(array(':menus'=>$value));
$row = $stmt->fetch();
$css_class = ($section == $row['url']) ? 'liselected' : 'menuelement';
echo '<li class="'.$css_class.'"><i class="'.$row['icon'].'"></i><p>'.$row['name'].'</p></li>';
}
} catch(PDOException $e) {
echo 'ERROR: ' . $e->getMessage();
}
}
} else {
header("Location:index.php");
}
?>
Please note that I only prepared the query once, this is the proper way to do it. Preparing takes server performance, but once prepared you can rebind the values.
Also, I changed the loop to a foreach loop, easier to maintain.
There where also some bracket issues in the code, my advice always code in the same way so these issues are easy to spot.

IF VAR is in mySQL database then return that rows data as variable PHP

I've tried like twenty times and the closest I got was when I put in a variable stored in row 1 of the db and it returned the content the last row in the db. Any clarity would be extremely helpful. Thanks.
// Create connection
$coco = mysqli_connect($server, $user, $pass, $db);
// Check connection
if (!$coco) { die("Connection failed: " . mysqli_connect_error()); }
// Start SQL Query
$grabit = "SELECT title, number FROM the_one WHERE title = 'on' AND (number = 'two' OR number='0')";
$result = mysqli_query($coco, $grabit);
// What I need it to do
if (mysqli_num_rows($result) > 0) {
while($row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result)) {
$titleit = $row["title"];
$placeit = $row["number"];
$incoming = 'Help';
if ($titleit[$_REQUEST[$incoming]]){
$message = strip_tags(substr($placeit,0,140));
}
echo $message;
}
} else {
echo "not found";
}
mysqli_close($coco);
Put the input that you want to match into the WHERE clause of the query, rather than selecting everything and then testing it in PHP.
$incoming = mysqli_real_escape_string($coco, $_POST['Help']));
$grabit = "SELECT number FROM the_one WHERE title = '$incoming' AND number IN ('two', '0')";
$result = mysqli_query($coco, $grabit);
if (mysqli_num_rows($result) > 0) {
while ($row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result)) {
echo $row['number'];
}
} else {
echo "not found";
}
I think you need to add a break; in that if or I would assume it would go through each row in the database and set message if it matches the conditional. Unless you want the last entry that matches...if not you should debug:
if ($titleit[$_REQUEST[$incoming]]){
// set message
}
and see when it's getting set. That may not be the issue, but it's at least a performance thing and could explain getting the last entry
Have you tried print_r($row) to see the row or adding echos to the if/else to see what path it's taking?

PHP Function within a function within a loop :S

Firstly, Thaks for taking a look at my question.
I have a function that works perfectly for me, and I want to call another function from within that function however I'm getting all kinds of issues.
Here are the functions then I'll explain what I'm needing and what I'm running into.
They are probably very messy, but I'm learning and thought I'd try get fancy then clean it up.
function GetStation($id){
$x_db_host1="localhost"; // Host name
$x_db_username1="xxxx"; // Mysql username
$x_db_password1="xxxx"; // Mysql password
$x_db_name1="xxxx"; // Database name
// Connect to server and select databse.
mysql_connect("$x_db_host1", "$x_db_username1", "$x_db_password1");
mysql_select_db("$x_db_name1");
// SQL Query Setup for Station Name
$sql="SELECT * FROM stations WHERE ID = $id LIMIT 1";
$result=mysql_query($sql);
while($rows=mysql_fetch_array($result)){
$retnm = $rows['CallSign'];
}
mysql_close();
echo $retnm;
} // Closes Function
// List Delegates Function!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
function ListDelegates(){
$x_db_host1="xxx"; // Host name
$x_db_username1="xxx"; // Mysql username
$x_db_password1="xxxx"; // Mysql password
$x_db_name1="xxxx"; // Database name
// Connect to server and select databse.
mysql_connect("$x_db_host1", "$x_db_username1", "$x_db_password1");
mysql_select_db("$x_db_name1");
$q = "SELECT * FROM delegates";
$result = mysql_query($q);
/* Error occurred, return given name by default */
$num_rows = mysql_numrows($result);
if(!$result || ($num_rows < 0)){
echo "Error displaying info";
return;
}
if($num_rows == 0){
echo "There are no delegates to display";
return;
}
/* Display table contents */
echo "<table id=\"one-column-emphasis\" summary=\"Delegates\"><thead>";
echo "<thead><tr><th>ID</th><th>Name</th><th>Station</th><th>Spec Req</th><th>BBQ</th><th>DIN</th><th>SAT</th><th>SUN</th></tr>";
echo "</thead><tbody>";
for($i=0; $i<$num_rows; $i++){
$d_id = mysql_result($result,$i,"DID");
$d_name1 = mysql_result($result,$i,"DFName");
$d_name2 = mysql_result($result,$i,"DLName");
$d_name = $d_name1 . " " . $d_name2;
$d_spec1 = mysql_result($result,$i,"DSpecRe");
$StatNm = mysql_result($result,$i,"DStation");
$d_st_name = GetStation($StatNm);
if ($d_spec1=="0"){ $d_spec = "-"; }
else {$d_spec = "YES"; }
$d_bbq1 = mysql_result($result,$i,"Dbbq"); // BBQ
if ($d_bbq1=="0"){ $d_bbq = "-"; }
else {$d_bbq = "NO"; }
$d_din1 = mysql_result($result,$i,"Dconfdinner"); // Dinner
if ($d_din1=="0"){ $d_din = "-"; }
else {$d_din = "NO"; }
$d_sat1 = mysql_result($result,$i,"DConfSat"); // Saturday
if ($d_sat1=="0"){ $d_sat = "-"; }
else {$d_sat = "NO"; }
$d_sun1 = mysql_result($result,$i,"DConfSat"); // Sunday
if ($d_sun1=="0"){ $d_sun = "-"; }
else {$d_sun = "NO"; }
echo "<tr><td>$d_id</td><td><strong>$d_name</strong></td><td>$d_st_name</td><td>$d_spec</td><td>$d_bbq</td><td>$d_din</td><td>$d_sat</td><td>$d_sun</td></tr>";
}
echo "</tbody></table></br>";
}
So I output ListDelegates() in a page and it displays a nice table etc.
Within ListDelegates() i use the GetStation() function.
This is because the table ListDelegates() uses contains the station ID number not name so I want GetStation($id) to output the station name
The problem I'm having is it seems GetStation() is outputting all names in the first call of the function so the first row in the table and is not breaking it down into each row and just one at a time :S
Here's what I think (I'm probably wrong) ListDelegates() is not calling GetStation() for each row it's doing it once even though it's in the loop. ??
I have no idea if this should even work at all... I'm just learning researching then trying things.
Please help me so that I can output station name
At the end of GetStation, you need to change
echo $retnm;

You are printing out the name from inside the function GetStation, when you are intending to store it in a variable. What ends up happening, is that the result of GetStation is effectively echo'ed on the screen outside of any table row. Content that is inside a table but not inside a table cell gets collected to the top of a table in a browser. If you want to see what I mean, just view source from your browser after loading the page.
You don't need to connect to the database in each and every function. Usually you do the database connection at the top of your code and use the handle (in PHP the handle is usually optional) throughout your code. I think your problem is because when you call the function each time it makes a new connection and loses the previous data in the query.
My dear first of all you should place your code of connection with local host and database globally. It should be defined only once. you are defining it in both function.
something like this, and as suggested, you should have connection to database established somewhere else
function ListDelegates(){
$x_db_host1="xxx"; // Host name
$x_db_username1="xxx"; // Mysql username
$x_db_password1="xxxx"; // Mysql password
$x_db_name1="xxxx"; // Database name
// Connect to server and select databse.
mysql_connect("$x_db_host1", "$x_db_username1", "$x_db_password1");
mysql_select_db("$x_db_name1");
$q = "SELECT * FROM delegates";
$result = mysql_query($q);
/* Error occurred, return given name by default */
$num_rows = mysql_numrows($result);
if(!$result || ($num_rows < 0)){
echo "Error displaying info";
return;
}
if($num_rows == 0){
echo "There are no delegates to display";
return;
}
/* Display table contents */
echo "<table id=\"one-column-emphasis\" summary=\"Delegates\"><thead>";
echo "<thead><tr><th>ID</th><th>Name</th><th>Station</th><th>Spec Req</th><th>BBQ</th><th>DIN</th><th>SAT</th><th>SUN</th></tr>";
echo "</thead><tbody>";
