Is there a way to change default URL formation on form submission?
Here is what I have:
<form action="<?php echo base_url('some_controller/some_method'); ?>" method="GET">
<select name="foo">
<option value="1">bar</option>
<option value="2">Wubba lubba dub dub</option>
</select>
<button type="submit">Send</button>
</form>
When I click the button, the url becomes: (not wanted)
localhost/some_controller/some_method?foo=2
Is there a way to make it like the following? (expected result)
localhost/some_controller/some_method/2
Is it achievable with PHP / Codeigniter only? Or maybe in HTML?
(Can it be done without javascript and without htaccess?)
I don't think using the form_open method makes any difference.
This happens because your method is GET. If you change your method to POST the info will disappear out of the URL. However, it will have different side-effects which are either good or bad depending on your viewpoint:
Post will put it in scope for CSRF protection, if that is turned on in codeigniter.
You will get a "Do you want to resubmit?"-type of message from your browser if navigating back to a page that was the result of a POST submit.
The only other alternative is to do an ajax request in the background via javascript.

loaded page from javascript. tested for GET & POST. Only GET set as expected;
window.location.href = "medications_edit_revised.html?recordId="+id ;
Retrieved and used the data from the GET[]
Reloaded page from SUBMIT as shown below.
<form method="post" action="">
<table id="detailsDivTable">
<?php
$editClass->selectTheRecord();
?>
</table>
<fieldset name="Group1">
<legend>Group box</legend>
<input name="saveButton" type="submit" value="Save" />
<input name="deleteButton" type="submit" value="Delete" />
<input name="cancelButton" type="submit" value="Cancel" />
</fieldset>
</form>`
Tested GET[] & SET[]
if (isset($_GET['recordId']) ) {
$recordId = $_GET['recordId'];
require_once "medications_edit_revised.class.php";
$editClass = new editRevisedClass($DBH, $recordId);
}
if(isset($_POST['saveButton'])) {
Both tested TRUE. Is this normal behavior. I expected the GET[] would have been cleared when the form was POSTed
If yes is there a way to clear the GET before sending the SUBMIT
Thanks
When you set the URL like this:
window.location.href = "medications_edit_revised.html?recordId="+id ;
You have set URL params. Then when you do this:
Reloaded page from SUBMIT as shown below.
<form method="post" action="">
Because the action is empty it'll retain the URL parameters, because that's what empty and (eg) $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] do - they send to the current URL, params and all.
You already know the URL so just set it as needed:
action="medications_edit_revised.html"
You seem to be confusing POST/GET requests and the PHP $_POST and $_GET superglobal variables.
PHP will populate $_GET with data in the query string of the URL the request was made to.
PHP will populate $_POST with data in the request body of a POST request if that data is encoded using a supported encoding.
It doesn't matter if the request was caused by JavaScript, a form submission, or something else.
Is this normal behavior.
Yes
If yes is there a way to clear the GET before sending the SUBMIT
Submit the form to a URL which does not have a query string.
The URL the form is submitted to will be specified by the action attribute.
If you don't have an action attribute, it will be submitted to the URL of the current page. If that URL has a query string, then so will be the URL that the form is submitted to (and thus $_GET will be populated).
If you want to avoid that, then specify the action explicitly.
Can you please past some of your code?
If you use GET to revice your variable, it gets it from the URL: example.com?name=jesper&lastname=kaae
The differences is:
GET requests a representation of the specified resource. Note that GET should not be used for operations that cause side-effects, such as using it for taking actions in web applications. One reason for this is that GET may be used arbitrarily by robots or crawlers, which should not need to consider the side effects that a request should cause.
And
POST submits data to be processed (e.g., from an HTML form) to the identified resource. The data is included in the body of the request. This may result in the creation of a new resource or the updates of existing resources or both.
You can read more about them here
Suppose my Form codes look like this
URL : localhost/my-url.php
<form action="hello.php">
...bla bla bla
</form>
I will process the data in hello.php and i want to redirect to user to same url after processing (according to above example)
localhost/my-url.php
I know we can use header but i don't know how to get that url from which form was submited :(
Googled but didn't found any use full.
Thanks.
Add a hidden value in your form:
<input type="hidden" name="lastUrl" value="<?php echo $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] ?>" />
You now have the URL in $_POST['lastUrl'] data. You need to do it that complicated because $_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"]; is send by the browser, and not all of them do this reliable.
You should put a hidden field in your form and set its value to current page url.
Then you submit the form and get the value of hidden field.
Then you can redirect user to hidden field (which is actually a URL of the page where you are submitting form) by using javascript or php.
You can use the
$_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"];
to get the original URL where the form was posted from.
Remember to escape it, if you use it however. ]
Alternatively, you can process the form using AJAX, send process things (redirection) client-side.
Note that form data can be changed and intercepted if you wish to send the URL of the page as form data.
I have a search form on my site,
and I want to pass the text in the form to the URL,
like: mysite.com/search.php?q=apples (if search word was apples).
I figure that way people can bookmark their searches.
One solution I thought would be to catch the searchword in search.php and then reload into a new made URL. But it's not very elegant to reload like that. So how can I do it - I mean, how is it normally done? Do I need to use jQuery?
Clarification: I know how to get the vars from the URL in php. What I need is to control the URL that will be opened when the user presses SUBMIT, and the URL needs to contain the user's search word! Just like Google or DuckDuckGo, I put "apples" and the URL becomes ...?q=apples. But - how?! (Then I'll pick that up in the search.php, of course, but I know how to do that.) This is what I have now:
<div id="topnav">
<form action="search.php" method="post">
<input name="searchword" type="text">
<input type="submit">
</form>
Thank you so much.
Upon reading the clarification. What you need is a search form that submits to your search.php for example:
<form action="search.php" method="get">
<input type="text" value="search word" name="q" />
<input type="submit" value="submit" />
</form>
This will pass whatever value entered in the input named q to the search.php script.
If you post a HTML form which includes a text field with name 'q' and value 'apples' then the URL you want is automatically created by the browser. You definitely don't need JQuery for that.
how about using the POST-Redirect-GET pattern? [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post/Redirect/Get] also http://blog.andreloker.de/post/2008/06/Post-Redirect-Get.aspx
This would allow you to keep the url in the browser:
yoursite.com/search.php?q=apples
Alternatively, you can use javascript to set the location.hash of the url in the browser w/ the query information after the postback; I suspect this is actually what Google does.
eg,
yoursite.com/search.php#apples
So the form action would be search.php, the field would be called q and the method would be Get?
You should be able to handle all this from the html form if I'm understanding what it is you're trying to achieve.
if you have a form then must have declared form methoed POST/GET
in you search.php you can simply do this $_POST['name of the input field'] to get the word string,
and if you want to pass variable in url then you need to make a link through Link
I have the following form in a file called "foobar.html":
<!-- other stuff -->
<form method="post" action="foo.php?cat=1">
<input type="text" name="bar" />
<input type="submit" value="foobar" name="foobar" />
</form>
<!-- other stuff -->
And I open this file in a php script with fopen, how do I fill out and submit this form without any input from the user? Thanks
Parse out the action attribute with a HTML parser, and use curl to perform a POST to the appropriate target URL.
Read the entire fire into a variable. Rather than using fopen you might want to consider file_get_contents for that, it's a bit cleaner.
You'll then want to parse that string as HTML. You could use PHP's DOMDocument for that. Get the action and method of the form by traversing the DOM tree to the form tag and reading out those attributes. Next get the names of any inputs within the form tags. Use those names to generate a query string with your key=value pairs. If the method of the form is GET, then append that query string to the form action, otherwise save it in another variable.
Finally, use CURL to "submit" the form. That is, use the form action as the URL for a CURL request. If the form method was GET, you should have already appended the data to the URL, if the method was POST, you'll want to set the data for the CURL request to the data query string you generated from the form names.
If your question extend to how to know what data to fill into what form fields, that is pretty much impossible to solve. Certainly there are some input names you could look for and guess the required data but a universal solution is an impossible problem to solve.
Are you trying to have the user submit the form on their browser, without user interaction? If that's the case, you'll need to resort to javascript, something like:
<body onLoad="document.getElementById('autoSubmit').submit();">
<form id="autoSubmit">
(insert form here)
</form>
</body>
This will automatically submit the form. Some notes: not everyone has JavaScript enabled, so you might want to change the inputs to type="hidden", as well as add a nice big submit button that says Click Here.
I have a index.html where I would like to submit some coordinates that can be passed upon to separate PHP file; where it could perform a query. I am new to this.
HTML:
Xmax<input type="text" name="Xmax" size="15">
Ymax<input type="text" name="Ymax" size="15">
<input type=SUBMIT name="submit" VALUE="Submit">
PHP query:
$query = "SELECT * FROM state WHERE LONG_HI<$_POST["Ymax"] AND LAT_HI<$_POST["Xmax"];
$result = mysql_query($query);
So is there a way to perform remote action from this HTML file to the specified PHP file?
Well, Forms can do the job. Is'nt it?
Yes
Either make an HTML form to accept the Xmax and Ymax parameters, and set the form action to the PHP file;
Or use AJAX to pass the data in the background and receive a response.
If both of these concepts are foreign to you, and you don't know JavaScript, get comfortable with the first option first.
Would you please describe in detail what you are about to do?
do you have a html form?
What kind of request do you do, clicking a link, sending the form?
The query does not contain any of the variables...
could you please post excerpts of the code? single lines are useless in most cases.
Regards,
Mario
use action attribute in FORM element to specify where the request will be sent to.
<form action="another.php" method="POST">
Xmax<input type="text" name="Xmax" size="15">
Ymax<input type="text" name="Ymax" size="15">
<input type=SUBMIT name="submit" VALUE="Submit">
</form>
You just add few line with your code because to transfer any variable value from one form to another page we have to use 'form' method. So, we have to add form tag with your code. Transferring of data from one page to another page (any type of page like php, jsp, aspx etc) is done by two methods mainly - one of them is Post and another one is Get.
Difference between both the method is quite simple. In Post method, data from one page to another page travels in hidden form whereas Get is basically used to transfer value by displaying it at url. Post method example: user-name and password, and Get Method: any query fired at Search Engine.
<form name="form" action="filename.php" method="POST" >
//Your Code
</form>
