adding data into json with PHP - php

i used json_decode to create a json object. After going through some elements i would like to add child elements to it. How do i do this?

Depending on which options you passed to json_decode(), you got either an object or array back from it, and you can add elements to these as you would any other object or array.
To add $key => $element to an array:
$myArray[$key] = $element;
Slightly less obvious, but you can add a new public member to an object in PHP as follows:
$myObj->$key = $element;
This will add a member variable from the contents of $key (assuming $key is a string).
If you then pass your array/object into json_encode(), you'll end up with the following json:
{ 'value_of_key' : 'value_of_element' }

I would use json_decode($json,true) with the true flag so that it would come back as an associative array. Then you can add items using the array syntax.

Those data in $data variable. When I'm using dd($data); I got this:
CurlHandle {#1918 ▼
+url: "https://example.com"
+content_type: "application/json; charset=UTF-8"
+http_code: 200
+header_size: 887
+namelookup_time_us: 139522
+pretransfer_time_us: 326662
+redirect_time_us: 0
+starttransfer_time_us: 668686
+total_time_us: 668752
}
I want to convert this data to an array.
I'm using this: $arr = json_decode($data,true);
But, this is not working. Now, how can I convert this?
You can use below solution
$yourArray = json_decode(json_encode($yourObject), true);
and this convert object to an array for more info
Objects are, in PHP, maybe iterable. Notice, you may iterate through an object's public fields only via the foreach loop. So the following works:
$array = [];
foreach ($object as $property) {
$array[] = $property; // Stores public field only
}
var_dump($array);
Simply to get an array of object properties, you may use the get_object_vars() function.
var_dump(get_object_vars($object));
You may cast an object to be an array as #MoussabKbeisy said. And this would be the easiest way:
$array = (array) $object;
Here is another way is using ArrayIterator:
$iterator = new ArrayIterator($object);
var_dump(iterator_to_array($iterator));
while this is a PHP Object so you can deal with it by 2 ways:
1- if you want to get on of it's parameters, you can simply use
$yourObject->parameter;
2- if you need to use convert and use it as array, then there is different ways to convert an object to an array in PHP
//1
$array = (array) $yourObject;
//2
$array = json_decode(json_encode($yourObject), true);

Why does my JSON array turn into an object?

I am trying to unset a value from test_bots.json and save it back, but somehow the data format is being changed in the process.
test_bots.json contains this JSON array:
["John","Vladimir","Toni","Joshua","Jessica"]
My code looks like this:
$good = 'Toni';
$good_arr = file_get_contents('test_bots.json');
$good_arr = json_decode($good_arr);
if(in_array($good, $good_arr)){
$key = array_search($good, $good_arr);
unset($good_arr[$key]);
$good_arr2 = json_encode($good_arr);
file_put_contents('test_bots.json',$good_arr2);
}
The output that's saved is:
{"0":"John","1":"Vladimir","3":"Joshua","4":"Jessica"}
but I want the output to look like:
["John","Vladimir","Joshua","Jessica"]
I tried to unserialize the array before saving it, but it's not working.
Why is this happening?
In order for json_encode to convert a PHP array with numeric keys to a JSON array rather than a JSON object, the keys must be sequential. (See example #4 in the PHP manual for json_encode.)
You can accomplish this in your code by using array_values, which will reindex the array after you have removed one of the items.
$good_arr2 = json_encode(array_values($good_arr));

In PHP, filter an Array of Associative Arrays

In PHP, are there any inbuilt functions to turn
[{"id":1, "name":"John"}, {"id":2, "name":"Tim"}]
into
[{"id":1}, {"id":2}]
?
I've used JSON to describe the objects above, but that's just a conceptual representation of my array of associative arrays. I don't want to have to loop manually - something short and elegant I can fit on one line would be nice.
One line, using array_map:
$arr = json_decode('[{"id":1, "name":"John"}, {"id":2, "name":"Tim"}]');
$new_arr = array_map(function($el){$ret=array("id"=>$el->id);return $ret;},$arr);
var_dump(json_encode($new_arr));
array_map(function($arr){return $arr[0];}, $array);
This should do it.
Edit As noted by Jonathon Hibbard, you could pass array element by reference, this way you do not to assign result of the function and just use changed old array. The code should then be modified appropriately.
First decode json by json_decode. You will get an array. Then follow this link to remove an index from an associative array. Then again decode it. It should work.
do something like:
$array = json_decode($some_json_string, true);
array_walk($array, function($value, $key) use(&$array) {
if($key == "name") {
unset($array[$key]);
}
});
Edit:
Cthulhu's answer won't get ya there without re-assigning it. Could use it as a reference though (equal to the walk. though if you want to use the map, its a bit better not to reallocate with a brand new array copy and just pass it by reference, then remove the key with an unset within it and move on.)
array_map(function(&$array) { unset($array['name']; }, $array);

Can't get value from array

I'm trying to output the value of the email value of an array, but have problems doing so.
The array is based on json_decode()
This is the error I receive
Fatal error: Cannot use object of type stdClass as array in /home/.... line 57
JSON (value of: $this->bck_content)
{"email":"test#email.com","membership_id":"0","fname":"Kenneth","lname":"Poulsen","userlevel":"1","created":"2012-04-23 10:57:45","lastlogin":"2012-04-23 10:58:52","active":"y"}
My code
# Display requested user details
$details_array = json_decode($this->bck_content);
$value = $details_array['email'];
print $value;
You need to use the second argument to json_decode to force array structures on JS objects.
json_decode($this->bck_content, true);
This will make sure all JS objects in the json are decoded as associative arrays instead of PHP StdObjects.
Of course that is assuming you want to use array notation to access them. If you're fine with using object notation then you can just use:
$value = $details_array->email;
try this one
$value = $details_array->email;
or
json_decode($json, true);
or
$details_array = (array)json_decode($json);
what have you done wrong is writen in error description

Associative array decoding in JSON

I am trying to change the class of a list of elements based on information in a DB. I figure the easy way was via an array. I build the array on the php side as follows.
$setClassResult = array();
while($row = mysql_fetch_array( $result ))
{
$setClassResult= array_push_assoc($setClassResult, $row['item_id'], $row['parent']);
}
echo json_encode(array($setClassResult));
break;
which give me....
[{"830":"0","734":"830","733":"830","732":"830","735":"830","737":"830","736":"830","738":"830","739":"830","740":"830","741":"830","742":"830","872":"0","869":"872","868":"872","880":"872","964":"872"}]
to decode and change the elements I use.....
$.each(data, function(key, val) {
$("#recordsArray_"+key).toggleClass(val);
alert(key+" "+val);
});
The alert happens once with 0[object,Object] Is this because of the way I created the array? The first thing I notice wrong is the [ and ] around the JSON.
No need to add extra array, try with :
echo json_encode($setClassResult);
Your result is in array of object format:
[{"830":"0","734":"830","733":"830","732":"830","735":"830","737":"830","736":"830","738":"830","739":"830","740":"830","741":"830","742":"830","872":"0","869":"872","868":"872","880":"872","964":"872"}]
So when you iterate, it iterates through array first & says key is 0 & value is an object.so, if you later iterate through value which is an object, you will get it
or as soju if u dont require to store it in array of objects but a single object & iterate once.
