I'm using PHP, and trying to write a regular expression that matches any alphabet in any language but not numbers.
I've tried /\p{L}+/ But it matches unicode alphabets and numbers too. I'm checking against Arabic and English languages. English numbers doesn't pass which is normal, but Arabic numbers pass which is not normal.
Is there another regular expression that matches only alphabets in any language ?
The regex engine need to know that the target string is an unicode string (to avoid interpretation errors). To do that you can use the u modifier, that has two functions:
it expands classical shorthand character classes like \w \d to unicode characters (and not only ascii characters)
it forces the string to be seen as an unicode string
So you can use: /\pL+/u
Note that in your particular case, the first behavior is not needed, but you can only switch on the second behavior with: /(*UTF8)\pL+/ ((*UTF8) must be placed at the very begining of the pattern)
I know this should remove any characters from string and keep only numbers and ENGLISH letters.
$txtafter = preg_replace("/[^a-zA-Z 0-9]+/","",$txtbefore);
but I wish to remove any special characters and keep any letter of any language like Arabic or Japanese.
Probably this will work for you:
$repl = preg_replace('/[^\w\s]+/u','' ,$txtbefore);
This will remove all non-word and non-space characters from your text. /u flag is there for unicode support.
You can use the \p{L} pattern to match any letter and \p{N} to much any numeric character. Also you should use u modifier like this: /\p{L}+/u
Your final regex may look like: /[^\p{L}\p{N}]/u

The regex syntax for any character except line breaks (\r or \n) is ., thus if you wanted to match one or more of any character, your regex would simply be .+ reference. However, some regex flavours do permit you to specify a flag which will allow the . to include line break characters.
As noted by Damien, what is the point of using preg_match?
In RegEx, the dot sign (.) will match any character, so
preg_match('/hel.o/', $str);
Will match hello, helpo, hel o, hel%o etc.
Dot (.) stands for any character.
[\w\W] or [\s\S] matches all characters, including line breaks.
But these expressions are much slower then ., so be careful when working with big strings.
you may need to append /u in the pattern to tell preg_match to use utf8 strings, check manual for /u option and just paste the simple in the php code.
just remember to save the .php in utf8 mode or do some decodes manually.
How can I remove control characters like STX from a PHP string? I played around with
preg_replace("/[^a-zA-Z0-9 .\-_;!:?äÄöÖüÜß<>='\"]/","",$pString)
but found that it removed way to much. Is there a way to remove only
control chars?
If you mean by control characters the first 32 ascii characters and \x7F (that includes the carriage return, etc!), then this will work:
preg_replace('/[\x00-\x1F\x7F]/', '', $input);
(Note the single quotes: with double quotes the use of \x00 causes a parse error, somehow.)
The line feed and carriage return (often written \r and \n) may be saved from removal like so:
preg_replace('/[\x00-\x09\x0B\x0C\x0E-\x1F\x7F]/', '', $input);
I must say that I think Bobby's answer is better, in the sense that [:cntrl:] better conveys what the code does than [\x00-\x1F\x7F].
WARNING: ereg_replace is deprecated in PHP >= 5.3.0 and removed in PHP >= 7.0.0!, please use preg_replace instead of ereg_replace:
preg_replace('/[[:cntrl:]]/', '', $input);
For Unicode input, this will remove all control characters, unassigned, private use, formatting and surrogate code points (that are not also space characters, such as tab, new line) from your input text. I use this to remove all non-printable characters from my input.

PHP does support POSIX-Classes so you can use [:cntrl:] instead of some fancy character-magic-stuff:

Take a look at the Unicode Character Properties available that can be used to test within a regex. You should be able to use these regexes in Microsoft .NET, JavaScript, Python, Java, PHP, Ruby, Perl, Golang, and even Adobe. Knowing Unicode character classes is very transferable knowledge, so I recommend using it!

Normally, \p indicates that it's something we want to match and we use \P (capitalized) to indicate something that does not match. But PHP doesn't have this functionality, so we need to use ^ in the regex to do a manual negation.
A simpler regex then would be ^\PC, but this might be too restrictive in deleting invisible formatting. You may want to look closely and see what's best, but one of the alternatives should fit your needs.

regex free method
If you are only zapping the control characters I'm familiar with (those under 32 and 127), try this out:

The loop gets rid of all but DEL, which we just add to the end.
I'm thinking this will be a lot less stressful on you and the script then dealing with regex and the regex library.

Just for kicks, I came up with another way to do it. This one does it using an array of control characters:
