PHP submit problem - php

I'm trying to check if the username is available and display it for the user to see when they check there account settings, which I have done.
BUT when the user tries to fill out another field I get the Your username is unavailable! which should not pop up because its the users username already. I want to know how can I fix this problem using PHP so that the users name is displayed every time the user views their account settings and it wont cause problems when a user submits additional info?
Here is the PHP code.
if (isset($_POST['submitted'])) {
require_once '../htmlpurifier/library/HTMLPurifier.auto.php';
$config = HTMLPurifier_Config::createDefault();
$config->set('Core.Encoding', 'UTF-8');
$config->set('HTML.Doctype', 'XHTML 1.0 Strict');
$config->set('HTML.TidyLevel', 'heavy');
$config->set('HTML.SafeObject', true);
$config->set('HTML.SafeEmbed', true);
$purifier = new HTMLPurifier($config);
$mysqli = mysqli_connect("localhost", "root", "", "sitename");
$dbc = mysqli_query($mysqli,"SELECT users.*
FROM users
WHERE user_id=3");
$first_name = mysqli_real_escape_string($mysqli, $purifier->purify(htmlentities(strip_tags($_POST['first_name']))));
$username = mysqli_real_escape_string($mysqli, $purifier->purify(htmlentities(strip_tags($_POST['username']))));
if($_POST['username']) {
$u = "SELECT user_id
FROM users
WHERE username = '$username'";
$r = mysqli_query ($mysqli, $u) or trigger_error("Query: $q\n<br />MySQL Error: " . mysqli_error($mysqli));
if (mysqli_num_rows($r) == TRUE) {
$username = NULL;
echo '<p class="error">Your username is unavailable!</p>';
} else if(mysqli_num_rows($r) == 0) {
$username = mysqli_real_escape_string($mysqli, $purifier->purify(htmlentities(strip_tags($_POST['username']))));
if ($_POST['password1'] == $_POST['password2']) {
$sha512 = hash('sha512', $_POST['password1']);
$password = mysqli_real_escape_string($mysqli, $purifier->purify(strip_tags($sha512)));
} else {
$password = NULL;
}
if($password == NULL) {
echo '<p class="error">Your password did not match the confirmed password!</p>';
} else {
if (mysqli_num_rows($dbc) == 0) {
$mysqli = mysqli_connect("localhost", "root", "", "sitename");
$dbc = mysqli_query($mysqli,"INSERT INTO users (user_id, first_name, username, password)
VALUES ('$user_id', '$first_name', '$username', '$password')");
}
if ($dbc == TRUE) {
$dbc = mysqli_query($mysqli,"UPDATE users
SET first_name = '$first_name', username = '$username', password = '$password'
WHERE user_id = '$user_id'");
echo '<p class="changes-saved">Your changes have been saved!</p>';
}
if (!$dbc) {
print mysqli_error($mysqli);
return;
}
}
}
}
}
Here is the html form.
<form method="post" action="index.php">
<fieldset>
<ul>
<li><label for="first_name">First Name: </label><input type="text" name="first_name" id="first_name" size="25" class="input-size" value="<?php if (isset($_POST['first_name'])) { echo stripslashes(htmlentities(strip_tags($_POST['first_name']))); } else if(!empty($first_name)) { echo stripslashes(htmlentities(strip_tags($first_name))); } ?>" /></li>
<li><label for="username">UserName: </label><input type="text" name="username" id="username" size="25" class="input-size" value="<?php if (isset($_POST['username'])) { echo stripslashes(htmlentities(strip_tags($_POST['username']))); } else if(!empty($username)) { echo stripslashes(htmlentities(strip_tags($username))); } ?>" /><br /><span>(ex: CSSKing, butterball)</span></li>
<li><label for="password1">Password: </label><input type="password" name="password1" id="password1" size="25" class="input-size" value="<?php if (isset($_POST['password1'])) { echo stripslashes(htmlentities(strip_tags($_POST['password1']))); } ?>" /></li>
<li><label for="password2">Confirm Password: </label><input type="password" name="password2" id="password2" size="25" class="input-size" value="<?php if (isset($_POST['password2'])) { echo stripslashes(htmlentities(strip_tags($_POST['password2']))); } ?>" /></li>
<li><input type="submit" name="submit" value="Save Changes" class="save-button" />
<input type="hidden" name="submitted" value="true" />
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Preview Changes" class="preview-changes-button" /></li>
</ul>
</fieldset>
</form>

When you're checking for the submitted form on these lines:
if($_POST['username']) {
$u = "SELECT user_id
FROM users
WHERE username = '$username'";
You should put the user's id to prevent getting locked into the same record:
$u = "SELECT user_id
FROM users
WHERE username = '$username'
AND user_id <> 3";
That's because the checking needs to be done on ALL other user's username field, EXCLUDING the current user :)
Hope this helps!

Check if username is being used

I'm wondering if and how I could check if a username is being used.
I heard you can do this with jQuery but i just want something simple since I'm a beginner.
I have tried it but i can't seam to get it right. I just have it connected to a mysql database but since when a username with the same password as another account tries to logon, theres an issue, so i need this to stop people adding multiple usernames.
Here is my simple code for the registration form and the php
<form action="" method="POST">
<p><label>name : </label>
<input id="password" type="text" name="name" placeholder="name" /></p>
<p><label>User Name : </label>
<input id="username" type="text" name="username" placeholder="username" /></p>
<p><label>E-Mail : </label>
<input id="password" type="email" name="email"/></p>
<p><label>Password : </label>
<input id="password" type="password" name="password" placeholder="password" /></p>
<a class="btn" href="login.php">Login</a>
<input class="btn register" type="submit" name="submit" value="Register" />
</form>
</div>
<?php
require('connect.php');
// If the values are posted, insert them into the database.
if (isset($_POST['username']) && isset($_POST['password'])){
$username = $_POST['username'];
$email = $_POST['email'];
$password = $_POST['password'];
$name = $_POST['name'];
$query = "INSERT INTO `user` (username, password, email, name) VALUES ('$username', '$password', '$email', '$name')";
$result = mysql_query($query);
if($result){
}
}
?>
For starters you don't want to just rely on something like unique field for doing this, of course you will want to add that attribute to your username column within your database but above that you want to have some sort of frontal protection above it and not rely on your database throwing an error upon INSERT INTO, you're also going to want to be using mysqli for all of this and not the old version, mysql. It's vulnerable to exploitation and no longer in common practice, here's what each of your files should look like:
connect.php
<?php
$conn = mysqli_connect("localhost","username","password","database");
// Check connection
if (mysqli_connect_errno())
{
echo "Failed to connect to MySQL: " . mysqli_connect_error();
}
?>
register.php
<form action="insertuser.php" method="POST">
Username:
<input type="text" name="username" placeholder="Username" />
<br />
Password:
<input type="password" name="password" placeholder="Password" />
<br />
Name:
<input type="text" name="name" placeholder="Name" />
<br />
Email address:
<input type="text" name="email" placeholder="Email address" />
<br /><br />
<input type="submit" value="Register" />
</form>
<?php
// If there's an error
if (isset($_GET['error'])) {
$error = $_GET['error'];
if ($error == "usernametaken") {
echo "<h4>That username is taken!</h4>";
} elseif ($error == "inserterror") {
echo "<h4>Some kind of error occured with the insert!</h4>";
} else {
echo "<h4>An error occured!</h4>";
}
echo "<br />";
}
?>
Already have an account? Login here
insertuser.php
<?php
// Stop header errors
ob_start();
// Check if form has been posted
if (isset($_POST['username'])){
// Requre database connection file
require('connect.php');
// Clean the variables preventing SQL Injection attack
$username = mysqli_real_escape_string($conn, $_POST['username']);
$email = mysqli_real_escape_string($conn, $_POST['email']);
$password = mysqli_real_escape_string($conn, $_POST['password']);
$name = mysqli_real_escape_string($conn, $_POST['name']);
// Check if the username exists
// Construct SELECT query to do this
$sql = "SELECT id FROM user WHERE username = '".$username."';";
$result = mysqli_query($conn, $sql);
$rowsreturned = mysqli_num_rows($result);
// If the username already exists
if ($rowsreturned != 0) {
echo "Username exists, redirecting to register.php with an error GET variable!";
// Redirect user
header('Location: register.php?error=usernametaken');
} else {
// Construct the INSERT INTO query
$sql = "INSERT INTO user (username, password, email, name) VALUES ('".$username."', '".$password."', '".$email."', '".$username."');";
$result = mysqli_query($conn, $sql);
if($result){
// User was inserted
echo "User inserted!";
/* DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO HERE */
} else {
// There was an error inserting
echo "Error inserting, redirecting to register.php with an error GET variable!";
// Redirect user
header('Location: register.php?error=inserterror');
}
}
}
?>
Good luck with whatever you're working on and I hope this helps!

Here is another example :) , succes.

mysqli_query($ConDB, $sql);
$okmsg = "Register with succes.";
mysqli_close($ConDB);//Close conexion.
echo '<script>window.location="#registrer"</script>';
}
}
?>
<a name="registrer"></a>
<form action="" method="POST">

SET SQL_MODE = "NO_AUTO_VALUE_ON_ZERO";
SET time_zone = "+00:00";
CREATE TABLE user (

You can try use jQuery AJAX for what you want.
First, add this to your registration.php file
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script>
// when user submit the form
$('form').on('submit', function(event){
$.ajax({
url: "check_username.php",
type: "POST",
dataType: "JSON",
data: {
username: $("#username").val() // get the value from username textbox
},
success: function(data){
if(data.status == "exists"){
alert('Username already existed');
}
else{
$('form').submit();
}
},
});
event.preventDefault();
});
</script>
So now your registration.php file will look like this
registration.php
<form action="" method="POST">
<p>
<label>name : </label>
<input id="password" type="text" name="name" placeholder="name" />
</p>
<p>
<label>User Name : </label>
<input id="username" type="text" name="username" placeholder="username" />
</p>
<p>
<label>E-Mail : </label>
<input id="password" type="email" name="email"/>
</p>
<p>
<label>Password : </label>
<input id="password" type="password" name="password" placeholder="password" />
</p>
<a class="btn" href="login.php">Login</a>
<input class="btn register" type="submit" name="submit" value="Register" />
</form>
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script>
// when user typing in 'username' textbox
$('form').on('submit', function(event){
$.ajax({
url: "check_username.php",
type: "POST",
dataType: "JSON",
data: {
username: $("#username").val() // get the value from username textbox
},
success: function(data){
if(data.status == "exists"){
alert('Username already existed');
}
else{
$('form').submit();
}
},
});
event.preventDefault();
});
</script>
Then create php file named check_username.php to check the username submitted by user if it is already existed in database or still available.
check_username.php
<?php
// Check if 'username' textbox is not empty
if(!empty($_POST['username'])){
$username = trim(mysqli_real_escape_string($_POST['username']));
// Check the database if the username exists
$query = "SELECT username FROM `user` WHERE username = '".$username."'";
$result = mysqli_query($query);
if(mysqli_num_rows($result) > 0){
// if username already exist
// insert into array, to be sent to registration.php later
$response['status'] = 'exists';
}
else{
// if username available
$response['status'] = 'available';
}
}
header('Content-type: application/json');
echo json_encode($response);
exit;
?>
Here is how it works:
1. When user click the register button, jQuery will call check_username.php.
2. Now in check_username.php it will check the database if the username submitted already exists or still available.
3. Whatever the result either exists or available, check_username.php will send the result back to registration.php as string contains 'exists' or 'available'.
4. registration.php now get the result and will check the result sent by check_username.php if it contain 'exists' or 'available'. If the string is 'exists' then alert will be triggered. If the string is 'available', the form will be submitted.

Using SHA1 in PHP for Login form

I'm trying to make a simple register and login form.
I want to use SHA1 to save the encrypted password in database.
But when I try to login with the password, it seems it does not work.
There are three files - index.php, register.php ,login.php
Please help me to solve this problem.
//index.php
<form action="register.php" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data">
<label for="email">Email:</label>
<input type="text" name="email">
<br />
<label for="password">Password:</label>
<input type="password" name="password">
<button>Register</button>
</form>
<form action="login.php" method="post">
<label for="email">Email:</label>
<input type="text" name="email">
<br />
<label for="password">Password:</label>
<input type="password" name="password">
<button>Login</button>
</form>
//register.php
<?php
$email = $_POST['email'];
$password = $_POST['password'];
$regist_day=date('d-m-Y (H:i)');
if (!empty($email) && !empty($password)) {
require_once('lib/db_connect.php');
$dbc = mysqli_connect(DB_HOST,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD,DB_NAME)
or die('Error connecting database');
$sql = "INSERT INTO member(email,password,regist_day)";
$sql .= "VALUES ('$email',SHA1('$password'),'$regist_day')";
mysqli_query($dbc,$sql);
echo("
<script>
location.href='try.php'
</script>
") ;
}
else{
echo "You need to enter Email and Password";
}
?>
//login.php
<?php
$user_email = $_POST['email'];
$user_password = SHA1($_POST['password']);
if (!empty($user_email) && !empty($user_password)) {
require_once('lib/db_connect.php');
$dbc = mysqli_connect(DB_HOST,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD,DB_NAME)
or die('Error connecting database');
$sql = "SELECT * FROM member WHERE email = '$user_email'";
$result = mysqli_query($dbc,$sql);
$num_match = mysqli_num_rows($result);
if (!$num_match) {

}
else{
$sql = "SELECT * FROM member WHERE password = '$user_password' ";
$result = mysqli_query($dbc,$sql);
$password_match = mysqli_num_rows($result);
if (!$password_match) {
echo "SHA1 does not work";
exit;
}
else{
echo"success";
}
}
}
else{

how to check whether old password entered is present or not in db

I m having a login page where user enters id and password.To reset the password i have to check whether the entered password is present or not whether it matches with the id i have entered.How to validate it.I m unable to validate it. If user enters any password it displays the record is updated. How to validate it. Here is the code
login.php
<label type="text" name="id" maxlength="50" size="20">ID</label><br />
<input type="text" name="id" placeholder="ID" class="input" size="20"/><br /></div>
<div class="formItem">
<label type="text" name="uid" maxlength="50" size="20">Password</label><br />
<input type="password" name="uid" placeholder="ID" class="input" size="20"/><br /></div>

echo "<script>window.open('resetp.php','_self')</script>";
}
else {
echo "<script>alert('Login details are incorrect!')</script>";
}
}
?>
resetp.php
<label type="text" name="uid" maxlength="50" size="20">Old Password</label><br />
<input type="text" name="uid" placeholder="id" class="input" size="20"/><br /></div>
<div class="formItem">
<label type="text" name="uid" maxlength="50" size="20">New Password</label><br />
<input type="password" name="pass" placeholder="pass" class="input" size="20"/><br /></div>
<div class="formItem">

<input type="password" name="cpas" placeholder="" class="input" size="20"/><br /></div>
<div class="formItem">
<input type="submit" name="login1" value="RESET" class="formButton"><br /><br /><br /><br /></div>

$run = mysql_query($query);
if($query)
{
echo "<script>alert('Record updated')</script>";
}
else
{
echo "<script>alert('no')</script>";
}
}
?>
How can i validated it
Try this:
This line
<label type="text" name="uid" maxlength="50" size="20">New Password</label><br />
should be
<label type="text" name="pass" maxlength="50" size="20">New Password</label><br />
I guess couldn't understand your requirement.
Why don't you validate like you are doing in login.php
$query= "select * from resume where id='$id'
AND uid='$uid'";
$run= mysql_query($query);.................
the PHP script should be at the beginning, not at the end of the code. Begin with the <?php .... ?> and then follow the <HTML> ... </HTML> otherwise the result is returned even before the script is processed.
There are a lot of security issues with your code. You can try this.
<?php
require 'db.php';
$username = isset($_POST['username']) ? htmlspecialchars(trim($_POST['username']), ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8') : '';
$password = isset($_POST['password']) ? htmlspecialchars($_POST['password'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8') : '';
$error = array();
$error_found = 0;
if(isset($_POST['submit']) && ($_POST['submit'] == 'Reset'))
{
//check for errors.
//check if username field is empty.
if(empty($username))
{
$error[] = 'Please provide your user-name.';
}
//check if password field is empty.
if(empty($password))
{
$error[] = 'Please provide a password.';
}
//if errors exist, put errors found as true.
if(!empty($error))
{
$error_found = 1;
}
//else no errors are found.
else
{
//proceed to reset.
//connecting to database.
$db = mysql_connect(MYSQL_HOST, MYSQL_USER, MYSQL_PASSWORD) or die('Unable to connect, check your connection parameters. ');
mysql_select_db(MYSQL_DB, $db) or die('Could not select database, check availability. ' . mysql_error($db));
//querying the database. Checking if user-name password combination exists.
$query = 'SELECT username FROM resume WHERE username = "' . mysql_real_escape_string($username, $db) .
'" AND password = PASSWORD("' . mysql_real_escape_string($password, $db) . '")';
$result = mysql_query($query, $db) or die(mysql_error($db));
//checking if result is true.
if(mysql_num_rows($result) > 0)
{
//the result is true and so you can now reset your password.
}
else
{
$error[] = 'The username password combination you provided does not exist.';
$error_found = 1;
}
}
}
//HTML
?>
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html>
<head><title> ... </title></head>
<body>
<!--Your html code here -->
<?php
//if errors are found, then errors are shown here.
if($error_found == 1)
{
echo '<fieldset><center>';
echo '<ul>';
foreach($error as $e)
{
echo '<li>' . $e . '</li>';
}
echo '</ul>';
echo '</center></fieldset>';
}
?>
<form action="nameOfThisScript.php" method="POST">
Username:<input id="username" type="text" name="username" required />
Password:<input id="password" type="password" name="password" required />
<button id="Reset" type="submit" name="submit" value="Reset">Reset</button>
</form>
</body>
</html>
create a script named db.php in the same folder as this script and put the code
<?php
define('MYSQL_HOST', 'localhost');
define('MYSQL_USER', 'root');
define('MYSQL_PASSWORD', '');
define('MYSQL_DB', 'resume1');

php form submission to mysql database

I have a registration form. In the database, the username and email are unique index. When the form submits and username or email are already present in the database, the values are not inserted. I want to notify the user that the values were not inserted. How can i do this?
HTML
<form action="register.php" method="post" id="reg" onsubmit='return validate();'>
Company Name:
<input type="text" class="inputs" name="name" id="name" /><br />
Email:
<input type="text" class="inputs" name="email" id="txtEmail" /><br />
User name:
<input type="text" class="inputs" name="uname" id="uname"/><br />
Password:
<input type="password" class="inputs" name="pass" id="pass1"/><br />
Conferm Password:
<input type="password" class="inputs" name="cpass" id="pass2"/><br /><br />
<input type="submit" value="Register" class="button" />
</form>
register.php:
include ("db.php");
if (isset($_POST['register'])) {

echo $uname = ($_POST["uname"]);
echo $password = ($_POST["pass"]);
mysqli_query($con,"INSERT INTO company_profile(user_name, password, company_name, email, phone, country, activation_string) VALUES ('$uname','$password','$name','$email','','','')");
}
*Sweet And Short *
First check that username or email is exist or not using select query if resulting is 0 (it means not exists), Insert query will run ahead
<?php
if($_POST['register']){
$uname = $_POST['uname'];
$email = $_POST['email'];
$name= $_POST['name'];
$pass= $_POST['pass'];
$result = mysqli_query($con, 'SELECT * from TABLE_NAME where email_id = "'.$email.'" or username = "'.$uname.'" ');
if(mysqli_num_rows($result) > 0){
echo "Username or email already exists.";
}else{
$query = mysqli_query($con , 'INSERT INTO TABLE_NAME (`email_id`, `username`,`name`,`pass`) VALUES("'.$email.'", "'.$email.'", "'.$uname.'","'.$name.'", "'.$pass.'")');
if($query){
echo "data are inserted successfully.";
}else{
echo "failed to insert data.";
}
}
}
?>
The query method would return true or false, depending on if the row has been inserted or not.
Try the following Code
include ("db.php");
if (isset($_POST['register']))
{
echo $name = ($_POST["name"]);
echo $email = ($_POST["email"]);
echo $uname = ($_POST["uname"]);
echo $password = ($_POST["pass"]);
$var = mysqli_query('SELECT * from company_profile where email_id = "'.$email.'" or username = "'.$uname.'" ');
$num = mysqli_num_rows($var);
if($num==0)
{
$result = INSERT INTO company_profile(user_name, password, company_name, email, phone, country, activation_string) VALUES ('$uname','$password','$name','$email','','','');
$res = mysqli_query($result);
if($res)
{
echo "Records Inserted Successfully!!";
}
else
{
echo "Records Inserted Failed!!";
}
}
else
{
echo "User with the Details Already exists!!"
}
}

user_login and password_login correct, but are not working PDOPHP

I am trying to get my login script to work using PDO. The problem I am having is that when a user types in his/her username and passsword, it goes to the section of the code where it says it is incorrect, even if the password is correct. What can I do to fix this, and where can I implement the PDO error to show up to possibly help diagnose the problem.
The Login Script from index.php
<?
//Login Script
if (isset($_POST["user_login"]) && isset($_POST["password_login"])) {
$user_login = preg_replace('#[^A-Za-z0-9]#i', '', $_POST["user_login"]); // filter everything but numbers and letters
$password_login = preg_replace('#[^A-Za-z0-9]#i', '', $_POST["password_login"]); // filter everything but numbers and letters
$password_login=md5($password_login);
$db = new PDO('mysql:host=localhost;dbname=socialnetwork', 'root', 'abc123');
$db->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION);
$sql = "SELECT id FROM users WHERE username = ':user_login' AND password = ':password_login' LIMIT 1";

Not an answer but some advice for your code that couldn't fit in the comment. You can greatly reduce your code; actually you shouldn't repeat functionality too often... You can reduce:
$fn = ""; //First Name
$ln = ""; //Last Name
...
$fn = #$_POST['fname'];
$ln = #$_POST['lname'];
...
To half by writting it like this:
$fn = (!empty($_POST['fname'])) ? $_POST['fname'] : '';
$ln = (!empty($_POST['lname'])) ? $_POST['lname'] : '';
$un = (!empty($_POST['username'])) ? $_POST['username'] : '';
$em = (!empty($_POST['email'])) ? $_POST['email'] : '';
$em2 = (!empty($_POST['email2'])) ? $_POST['email2'] : '';
$pswd = (!empty($_POST['password'])) ? $_POST['password'] : '';
$pswd2 = (!empty($_POST['password2'])) ? $_POST['password2'] : '';
Furthermore, although this would require some other changes, you can reduce that to a couple of lines by writing it in an array like this:
// Retrieve user data
foreach (array('fname', 'lname', 'username', 'email', 'email2', 'password', 'password2') as $Value)
$User[$Value] = (!empty($_POST[$Value])) ? $_POST[$Value] : '';
I think your problem is here:
"SELECT id FROM users WHERE username = ':user_login' AND password = ':password_login' LIMIT 1";
When you use PDO prepare method like ? or : do not use single quotation mark (').
correct it like this:
"SELECT id FROM users WHERE username = :user_login AND password = :password_login LIMIT 1";
I hope now it will work!
RE your "Fatal error: call to undefined method PDO::execute() in ... line 110" issue:
"execute()" is a method in PDOStatement, not PDO, which is why your "$db->execute..." blew up.
(I know this should be a comment, but I'm not allowed yet. Sorry)
