As part of a query result, a column with names is returned. I want to apply a function so that the order of first and last name is flipped in my $db results. What is the most efficient way to accomplish this?
There answer probably lies in using either the foreach function, array_walk or array_map but I don't know the proper syntax.
This function does the name flip:

The $query is similar to this:

White and Black are columns for player names (need to be flipped) and correspond to the color of chess pieces. The columns in question are $ginfo->White and $ginfo->Black.
if you are speaking about the order they are put in the array , you can just select them reversed (for example SELECT first_name, last_name, .. FROM users...) but I suggest you use mysql_fetch_array, that way you will be able to access them as you wish (with $row['first_name'], $row['last_name'] in whatever order you want)
PHP has a plenty of string functions. You can use any you wish
You can attempt to replicate the functionality using the MySQL String Functions. The most likely candidate would probably a combination of LOCATE() to find the position of the ', ' and then a pair of SUBSTR() calls to get the portions before and after, then using CONCAT() to put them back together.

I have a question on how to go about the next phase of a project I am working on.
Phase I:
create a php script that scraped directory for all .txt file..
Open/parse each line, explode into array...
Loop through array picking out pieces of data that were needed and INSERTING everything into the database (120+ .txt files & 100k records inserted)..
this leads me to my next step,
Phase II:
I need to take a 'list' of several 10's of thousand of numbers..
loop through each one, using that piece of data (number) as the search term to QUERY the database.. if a match is found I need to grab a piece of data in a different column of the same record/row..
General thoughts/steps I plan to take
scrape directory to find 'source' text file.
open/parse 'source file'.... line by line...
explode each line by its delimiting character.. and grab the 'target search number'
dump each number into a 'master list' array...
loop through my 'master list' array.. using each number in my search (SELECT) statement..
if a match is found, grab a piece of data in another column in the matching/returned row (record)...
output this data.. either to screen or .txt file (havent decided on that step yet,..most likely text file through each returned number on a new line)
Specifics:
I am not sure how to go about doing a 'multiple' search/select statement like this?
How can I do multiple SELECT statements each with a unique search term? and also collect the returned column data?
is the DB fast enough to return the matching value/data in a loop like this? Do I need to wait/pause/delay somehow for the return data before iterating through the loop again?

this code seems to be working 'ok'.. but I dont understand on how to handle the retirned data correctly.. I seem to only be outputting (printing) the last variable/rows data..instead of the entire list..

I don't know if this answers your question but I think you're asking about sub-queries. They're pretty straightforward and just look something like this
SELECT * FROM tbl1 WHERE id = (SELECT num FROM tbl2 WHERE id = 1);
That will only work if there is one unique value to that second subquery. If it returns multiple rows it will return a parse error. If you have to select multiple rows research JOIN statements. This can get you started

With regards to a multiple select, (and I'll assume that you're using MySQL) you can perform that simply with the "IN" keyword:
for example:

just a point before we go on... you should try to avoid the mysql_ functions in PHP for new code, as they are about to be deprecated. Think about using the generic PHP DB handler PDO or the newer mysqli_ functions. More help on choosing the "right" API for you is here.

For handling more than one row of data (which you are), you should use a loop. Something like the following should do it (and my example will use the mysqli_ functions - which are probably a little more similar to the API you've been using):

I have two tables properties and buildings. I want to extract rows from the buildings table according to a criteria.
I have put these buildings ids in a variable, as below:
$buildings = "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10"
I am trying to access the properties according to the above list.
SELECT * FROM properties WHERE BUILDING_ID IN ('{$buildings}')
but I am not getting the desired result. How can I get the desired result? Is this the right approach?
Remove the single quotes (and optionally the braces).
$query = "SELECT * FROM properties WHERE BUILDING_ID IN ($buildings)"
Note that IN is not always the most efficient as it can't use indexes - if you can use BETWEEN instead, you may get better performance on a large dataset. But for smaller datasets, IN is fine.
You could do something like:
$buildings = "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10";
$buildingIDs = explode(",", $buildings);
$buildingQueries = array();
foreach ($buildingIDs as $buildingID) {
$buildingQueries[] = "BUILDING_ID = " . $buildingID;
}
$query = "SELECT * FROM properties WHERE " . implode(" OR ", $buildingQueries);
That will let you take advantage of indexes, and allow for variable IDs.
Warning: you should look into mysqli or PDO, and move away from the soon to be deprecated mysql library
Basically i want to add wildcards to the the col value when searching...
Usually I do this the other way around like this:
WHERE cakes.cake_name LIKE '%$cake_search%'
however now i want it to match the inverse:
the user searches for 'treacle
sponge', i want this to match a row
where the cake_name column =
'sponge'.
is this possible?
WHERE '$cake_search' LIKE concat('%',cakes.cake_name, '%')
should work. It will need a full table scan but so will the inverse query. Have you looked into full text search for MySQL? It will likely make this sort of query more efficient.
Why not using MATCH?
MATCH(`cake_name`) AGAINST ('treacle sponge')
You would have to split the user supplied input on the space character and dynamically construct your query to check the column for those values:
$input = "treacle sponge";
$input_words = explode(' ', $input);

In order to prevent SQL-Injection, I suggest using prepared statements.

Is there any way to check if a column is "anything"? The reason is that i have a searchfunction that get's an ID from the URL, and then it passes it through the sql algorithm and shows the result. But if that URL "function" (?) isn't filled in, it just searches for:
...AND column=''...
and that doesn't return any results at all. I've tried using a "%", but that doesn't do anything.
Any ideas?

The problem is "ikon=''"...
and ikon like '%' would check for the column containing "anything". Note that like can also be used for comparing to literal strings with no wildcards, so, if you change that portion of SQL to use like then you could pre-set the variable to '%' and be all set.
However, as someone else mentioned below, beware of SQL injection attacks. I always strongly suggest that people use mysqli and prepared queries instead of relying on mysql_real_escape_string().
You can dynamically create your query, e.g.:
$query = "SELECT * FROM table WHERE foo='bar'";
if(isset($_GET['id'])) {
$query .= " AND column='" . mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['id']) . "'";

Try using this:
AND ('$tab' = '' OR ikon = '$tab')
If the empty string is given then the condition will always succeed.
Alternatively, from PHP you could build two different queries depending on whether $id is empty or not.
Run your query if search string is provided by wrapping it in if-else condition:

There is noway to check if a column is "anything"
The way to include all values into query result is exclude this field from the query.
But you can always build a query dynamically.
Just a small example:

I take it that you are adding the values in from variables. The variable is coming and you need to do something with it - too late to hardcode a 'OR 1 = 1' section in there. You need to understand that LIKE isn't what it sounds like (partial matching only) - it does exact matches too. There is no need for 'field = anything' as:
{field LIKE '%'} will give you everything
{field LIKE 'specific_value'} will ONLY give you that value - it is not partial matching like it sounds like it would be.
Using 'specific_value%' or '%specific_value' will start doing partial matching. Therefore LIKE should do all you need for when you have a variable incoming that may be a '%' to get everything or a specific value that you want to match exactly. This is how search filtering behaviour would usually happen I expect.
I would like to convert an array if IDs, into a string of comma separated values, to use in a MySQL UPDATE query. How would I do this?
Remember to escape values:
'"' . implode('","', array_map('mysql_real_escape_string', $data)) . '"'
implode(',', $array);
Make sure you pass the results through mysql_real_escape_string() before executing your query. This should prevent sql injection if you use implode() as others suggest.
And as nickf mentions, always check to make sure the array isn't empty or null first, and handle those cases. Since you are only dealing with int's, it wouldn't hurt to put some type checking in your assignments, otherwise you'll get sql errors if a string slips in somehow.
Often this type of situation is people building an array from another table for use in a 2nd query.. If this is the case you can use a subquery to accomplish this.
Eg.
UPDATE Table SET Column = Value WHERE ID IN ( SELECT ID FROM Table2 WHERE CONDITIONS )
This is probably better if all ids should be numerical.
