I have several home renovation / improvement projects coming and I need to work with my wife to share ideas online since it is easier to keep track of photos and links to website for ideas. I am planning to use Wordpress for tracking. We tried Basecamp and it is very complicated for her. I am thinking about using some kind of theme of plugin of Wordpress so that we can upload photos, add task (as a post or similar). Then at the front index page, it would show all list of tasks and small photos. Very simple one page.
Any good project management or task management out there working with Wordpress? I searched online and most are out of date.

I've made a Client Area Wordpress theme because I needed something like this myself. Its compatible with BuddyPress as well which the latest version of CollabPress can use now.
you might want to give CollabPress a shot, it was last updated on 9-23-11.

You can use this plugin
WP Splash Page is a useful plugin if you wish a splash page in your WordPress site. In a easy way you can set up the plugin by choosing the text color or the background image among other things. It also provides you with some important features like age validation. Bots can't see the splash page. Instead, they go directly to the original page. By this way you won't lose ranking and visibility in search engines.

Please can one of you Wordpress or PHP gurus tell me what plugin this site is using for the photo albums - I desperately need one just like this - with password protection. I actually want it for a Joomla site, but figured if I can find out what this one is, I might be able to mod it to work with Joomla.

The two plugins I have detected on this website are 'Ultimate Social Media and Share Icons (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest etc.)' and 'MailChimp for WP'.
That would lead me to believe that it is most likely built into the theme, whatever that page is using. The theme is ePhoto, found here but it also looks like eGallery found here.

I am planning to create myself a photo storing solution - like dropbox, just in my own server and only with photos.
I was thinking of only one public page - login form. So when you enter www.example.com > you end up with a login form > after login you see your albums and you can easily create new ones/upload photos, bulk download and etc.
The system has to be super easy to use (senior citizen will be using it), should be compatible with mobile phones and all photos should be absolutely private!
I have searched online, but most of the systems are overcrowded with unnecessary tools that make the system complicated and orientated more to public galleries.
Any ideas of similar systems already created that I could use?
You have a few options here, personally I would just build this as that way you are getting exactly what you want.
However, not everyone has the time or patience I have. So as an alternative :
OwnCloud is the best option here in my opinion as I have installed and used this before. It is very user friendly and simple to install.

Drupal is a CMS which uses modules...
Modules can be content (wiki, blog, website, facebook-like), presentation (styles, ready-made components), administration, file management, etc.
Of course, Drupal isn't the only CMS, and I think many can be used with multi functionnality.

I'm familiar with wordpress and cakePHP; however, I'm building a small community website (hobby) that allows users to post music sheet (pdf/image) or guitar tabs ( text files). These music sheets should be organized by artists and songs. I've already built my own cms, but I'm not looking forward to maintain it as i'm scared I won't have the time.
An example of this would be ultimate-guitar.com . Not the whole site, just the way they display tabs and stuff
I posted a 1 month old build for you guys to see what i've done here. the site for the most part works, but as i said, I'm scared that i won't be able to maintain it. This is not the latest build, i haven't gotten around to uploading it. It fixes most of the issues
Are there any music publishing plugins for drupal and wordpress (I haven't seen any personally)?
I'm open to other suggestions and comments as well so please feel free to mention them
It doesn’t sound like you have any music specific needs, you just need to be able to attach text, pdf or images to an item (node in Drupal) and assign tags to it.
You can use taxonomy in Drupal to assign artists to the nodes. I should think what you want is pretty simple to do. I would suggest that you try installing it and seeing what it can do.
You might want to take a look at the Guitar module, which will allow you to easily add chord fingerings to your tabs.
