Publicly available webservice I can use - php

I am learning to write PHP client programs which call webservices with POST & GET. Is there any publicly available webservice I can use for trying out client programs? Basically, I don't want to get into writing a webservice first before I start trying out client programs - are there any such easy to use webservices I can use?

You can browse through ProgrammableWeb's API directory (REST protocol). What kind of webservice are you looking for in particular?

How to integrate python/django project with a webservice that provides api only for php?

I work on a django website. Currently, I need to integrate it with a third-party API that provides only PHP endpoints and some shitty documentation that instructs how to build PHP requests. The API provider introduces a PHP client containing a class that handles requests to PHP API webservice via SOAP.
First, is it possible to build python client that will interact with PHP endpoints without knowing server-side trickery of the API provider? Should I dive deeper into PHP client source code and try to rewrite it in python?
Second, should I create intermediary PHP webservice that will integrate third-party PHP API and provide a precise API to interact with python client.
Is there any better option?
P.S. Please, note that I'm new to PHP and SOAP.
Just like any other API. You just have to use the PHP client as a guide to build the API client in python. If you feel it's no help at all, throw it away and look what the endpoints are and what they spit out.
In the end, the endpoints on the remote server can be programmed in Smalltalk for you care. The API client only cares about what parameters to send to the server and what the response looks like.
So pick your basics:
requests for network protocol
soap client
authentication if oauth
and start coding ;) Good luck!

Build webservice for both website and app

I've developed an android app that interact with my database by using some php scripts (one for each function of my app) that returns a json object with response data.
Now i need to build up a website too that do the same tasks of my app, but i would fix up my server code.
Should i have to maintain my app php scripts separate from website scripts (i'm planning to use some php framework to develop it), or there's a different way to do it?
No! Same script will work for all platforms.
If you follow proper protocols you will be good :)
Use Rest Console or similar tools to test your webservice on browser.
If you are able to get JSON response, then its good for all platform.
If you want to separate out the platforms and devices on server that can be handled by using user agent check at server end.

Php in phone gap application

We have to develop an application with more plattform. We would use the framework PhoneGap. For our application we need services of backend, the question is: Does PhoneGap support PHP?
If it doesn't support PHP. In which way we can solve the problem?
The most important thing is: make call server
(Get and Post), parsing a json and other functions
that PHP gives.
Phonegap does not have a server. You need to call via Ajax to remote servers.
The backend can be in any language which supports HTTP calls, as PhoneGap is an independent client.
You can use PHP to write an API for use within your Javascript PhoneGap application.
I can recommend the Laravel framework to accomplish this.
Yes...you can use PHP or any PHP framework to give backend for mobile app made using phonegap/cordova....point is phonegap/cordova app will be on client mobile which won't understand PHP embedded in phonegap html files....so write an API amd place it on a server and then make AJAX calls to server to do database and other backed operations
Try to return JSON data from the PHP API.....it's a famous data structure and supported by many applications

Which protocol to use for this application?

I want to code an Android client and a Windows.exe server application (possibly PHP., I am still trying to decide).
I have no problem with developing the server app, but have not yet done any Android coding. Mostly, though, I am unsure about how to communicate between client and server.
A client aapp will login to the server then at regular intervals send its location (GPS coords) to the server which will store the data in a MySql database,
A second Android app will display a historical trail of where the first user has been using Google maps, plus a little more functionality.
Since I am not serving HTML, I am wondering whether to use HTTP GET / POST or a proprietary protocol over TCP/IP. I would like to encrypt it, so SSL seems in order,
Is there any compelling reason to use one or the other of use HTTP GET / POST or a proprietary protocol over TCP/IP?
Would coding my Android app be easier if I used JSON as my data format (or something else?), irrespective of the protocl used to transfer the data?
Hmmm, since much of the data returned as a response to GET by one of the apps will be data used to draw a Google map with a series of points showing travel, could I do the heavy duty processing on the server & return the HTML (or JS) necessary to display it an dhave the app embedd a browser in its UI to display the map? (the UI will also disply more, but maybe I shoudl just make it browser based HTML & JS, rather thn an actual Jav Android app? As you can see, I am confused)
[Update] I want to code both the clients and the server and to host the MySql database. I would prefer no 3rd party frameworks unless they are excedding simply to use and play very well together with Delphi or PHP.
I may recommend you to use Wcf with poco entity that provide you security as you want and create client in android to consume it.here is simple example of using wcf in android-http://fszlin.dymetis.com/post/2010/05/10/Comsuming-WCF-Services-With-Android.aspx
I would strongly recommend the use of the newest Google Play Services with the Google Cloud Messaging... It takes out of you all that work.
Check out, see if you like ;D

There is also a great video of this year's Google I/O about the maps improvement on Google Play Services:

Are you trying to create App that can be delivered from Google Play Store or a Andriod enable Web application? You Question is confusing in your need. If you are looking to create Andriod Apps then definitely PHP is not going to serve it up. Look for Andriod SDK and create your interface using that, then for Windows Server EXE you can do PHP based API or as suggested by other answers. But for User interface PHP is no. You need to read and understand the different between APP and Web App. or your question is not very clear on topic.

How do you invoke a web service from another web service using php?

So, I'm new to web programming, and for my homework I have to write some web services using PHP. Some of the web services have to use other web services, though, and we didn't learn how to do that. My professor said we should look up how to do that online.
I think to call a web service using a GET parameter I just need to do file_get_contents(url), but I have no idea how to make a web service call using POST. So, how do I make a web service call from a web service using POST?
POST and GET are used for data transmission and not for fetching data. To fetch data from a webpage use Curl or file_get_contents.
