I have 100 txt files on my webserver. I have to insert a string e.g. abcdef on the beginning of all of them using php and save them back again. How is this possible ?
Well, google found this.
function prepend($string, $filename) {
$context = stream_context_create();
$tmpname = tempnam(".");
$fp = fopen($filename, "r", 1, $context);
file_put_contents($tmpname, $string);
file_put_contents($tmpname, $fp, FILE_APPEND);
fclose($fp);
unlink($filename);
rename($tmpname, $filename);
}
So you call prepend($string, $filename) for every file and you're done.
Look at opendir, glob, fopen, and fwrite. For example:
foreach (glob("*.txt") as $file) {
$fh = fopen($file, 'c'); //Open file for writing, place pointer at start of file.
fwrite($fh, 'abcdef');
fclose($fh);
}

Trying to download files via the URL, rename from the .ADM extension to .txt
then put contents of each file into a single txt file
However its saying the fputs param 2 is a resource
The $logfile['name'] is the filename thats stored in the array
Heres my code
foreach($items as $logfile)
{
$getfile = $logfile['Download'];
$newfile = file_put_contents(str_replace('ADM','txt',$logfile['name']),
file_get_contents($getfile));
$name = str_replace('ADM','txt',$logfile['name']);
$newfile = $name;
$file = fopen($newfile, 'rb');
$output = fopen('tmp/test.txt', 'wb');
fputs($output, $file);
fclose($output);
fclose($file);
}
Its downloading each and renaming however its not moving the content & giving me this error
Warning: fputs() expects parameter 2 to be string, resource given in
The second parameter of fputs is the content of a file. Not a file resource.
Instead of
$file = fopen($newfile, 'rb');
You‘ll need to get the contents of the file
$content = file_get_contents($newfile);
Or, if you like to use fopen, you can use fread:
$file = fopen($newfile, 'rb');
$content = fread($fp, filesize($newfile));
Then you can put this content into another file:
fputs($output, $content);
I am trying to write to a file and then read the data from the same file. But sometimes I am facing this issue that the file reading process is getting started even before the file writing gets finished. How can I solve this issue ? How can i make file writing process finish before moving ahead?
// writing to file
$string= <12 kb of specific data which i need>;
$filename.="/ttc/";
$filename.="datasave.html";
if($fp = fopen($filename, 'w'))
{
fwrite($fp, $string);
fclose($fp);
}
// writing to the file
$handle = fopen($filename, "r") ;
$datatnc = fread($handle, filesize($filename));
$datatnc = addslashes($datatnc);
fclose($handle);
The reason it does not work is because when you are done writing a string to the file the file pointer points to the end of the file so later when you try to read the same file with the same file pointer there is nothing more to read. All you have to do is rewind the pointer to the beginning of the file. Here is an example:
<?php
$fileName = 'test_file';
$savePath = "tmp/tests/" . $fileName;
//create file pointer handle
$fp = fopen($savePath, 'r+');
fwrite($fp, "Writing and Reading with same fopen handle!");
//Now rewind file pointer to start reading
rewind($fp);
//this will output "Writing and Reading with same fopen handle!"
echo fread($fp, filesize($savePath));
fclose($fp);
?>
Here is more info on the rewind() method http://php.net/manual/en/function.rewind.php
I have mentioned the URL through which i got the solution. I implemented the same. If you want me to copy the text from that link then here it is :
$file = fopen("test.txt","w+");
// exclusive lock
if (flock($file,LOCK_EX))
{
fwrite($file,"Write something");
// release lock
flock($file,LOCK_UN);
}
else
{
echo "Error locking file!";
}
fclose($file);
Use fclose after writing to close the file pointer and then fopen again to open it.
I try to read all *.txt files from a folder and write all content from each file into another txt file. But somehow it only writes one line into the txt file.
I tried with fwrite() and file_put_contents(), neither worked.
Here is my code:
<?php
$dh = opendir('/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/test/');
while($file = readdir($dh)) {
$contents = file_get_contents('/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/test/' . $file);
$dc = array($contents);
}
file_put_contents('content.txt', $dc);
?>
This should work for you:
(Here I get all *.txt files in a directory with glob(). After this I loop through every file with a foreach loop and get the content of each single file with file_get_contents() and I put the content into the target file with file_put_contents())
<?php
$files = glob("path/*.txt");
$output = "result.txt";
foreach($files as $file) {
$content = file_get_contents($file);
file_put_contents($output, $content, FILE_APPEND);
}
?>
try this
$contents = array();
$line = file(/*next file in dir*/);
foreach($lines as line){
array_push($line, $contents);
}
//File path of final result
$filepath = "mergedfiles.txt";
$out = fopen($filepath, "w");
//Then cycle through the files reading and writing.
foreach($filepathsArray as $file){
$in = fopen($file, "r");
while ($line = fgets($in)){
print $file;
fwrite($out, $line);
}
fclose($in);
}
//Then clean up
fclose($out);
return $filepath;
below is the code which i want to modify
$input = fopen("php://input", "r");
$temp = tmpfile();
$realSize = stream_copy_to_stream($input, $temp);
fclose($input);
if ($realSize != $this->getSize()){
return false;
}
$target = fopen($path, "w");
fseek($temp, 0, SEEK_SET);
stream_copy_to_stream($temp, $target);
fclose($target);
I want to save the contents into the memory and transfer it accross to other server without saving it on apache server.
when i try to output the contents i only see resource id# 5. Any suggestion, comments are highly apprecited . thanks
The code you have opens file handles, which in themselves are not the content. To get the content into a variable, just read it like any other file:
$put = file_get_contents('php://input');
To get the contents of the stream:
rewind($temp); // rewind the stream to the beginning
$contents = stream_get_contents($temp);
var_dump($contents);
Or, use file_get_contents as #deceze mentions.
UPDATE
I noticed you're also opening a temp file on disk. You might want to consider simplifying your code like so:
$put = stream_get_contents(STDIN); // STDIN is an open handle to php://input
if ($put) {
$target = fopen('/storage/put.txt', "w");
fwrite($target, $put);
fclose($target);
}
In PHP if you write to a file it will write end of that existing file.
How do we prepend a file to write in the beginning of that file?
I have tried rewind($handle) function but seems overwriting if current content is larger than existing.
Any Ideas?
$prepend = 'prepend me please';
$file = '/path/to/file';
$fileContents = file_get_contents($file);
file_put_contents($file, $prepend . $fileContents);
The file_get_contents solution is inefficient for large files. This solution may take longer, depending on the amount of data that needs to be prepended (more is actually better), but it won't eat up memory.
<?php
$cache_new = "Prepend this"; // this gets prepended
$file = "file.dat"; // the file to which $cache_new gets prepended
$handle = fopen($file, "r+");
$len = strlen($cache_new);
$final_len = filesize($file) + $len;
$cache_old = fread($handle, $len);
rewind($handle);
$i = 1;
while (ftell($handle) < $final_len) {
fwrite($handle, $cache_new);
$cache_new = $cache_old;
$cache_old = fread($handle, $len);
fseek($handle, $i * $len);
$i++;
}
?>
$filename = "log.txt";
$file_to_read = #fopen($filename, "r");
$old_text = #fread($file_to_read, 1024); // max 1024
#fclose(file_to_read);
$file_to_write = fopen($filename, "w");
fwrite($file_to_write, "new text".$old_text);
Another (rough) suggestion:
$tempFile = tempnam('/tmp/dir');
$fhandle = fopen($tempFile, 'w');
fwrite($fhandle, 'string to prepend');
$oldFhandle = fopen('/path/to/file', 'r');
while (($buffer = fread($oldFhandle, 10000)) !== false) {
fwrite($fhandle, $buffer);
}
fclose($fhandle);
fclose($oldFhandle);
rename($tempFile, '/path/to/file');
This has the drawback of using a temporary file, but is otherwise pretty efficient.
When using fopen() you can set the mode to set the pointer (ie. the begginng or end.
$afile = fopen("file.txt", "r+");
'r' Open for reading only; place
the file pointer at the beginning of
the file.
'r+' Open for reading and
writing; place the file pointer at the
beginning of the file.
$file = fopen('filepath.txt', 'r+') or die('Error');
$txt = "/n".$string;
fwrite($file, $txt);
fclose($file);
This will add a blank line in the text file, so next time you write to it you replace the blank line. with a blank line and your string.
This is the only and best trick.
