I am using Codeigniter to backup mysql tables and write the sql file to the local webserver's htdocs/application/backups directory.
I want that directory to be mirrored on my remote webserver (dreamhost backups user account) but it's not working, I'm not seeing the sql files in the remote directory.
I'm using CI's FTP library and it's mirror() function to copy the contents of my local backups directory to my remote server.
In my database backup model I set variables to use in the scrip:
private $local_folder = 'my_directory/';
private $server_folder = 'my_server_directory/';
private $server_credentials = array(
'hostname'=>'my.hostname.com',
'username'=>'my_username',
'password'=>'my_password'
);
Also in the database backup model I have the mirror function:

I call the mirror() from my backup function. The sql files are created and stored locally by the backup function, but the local folder isn't mirrored to the webserver.
the remote backup directory permissions are '777' and test runs of $this->ftp->list_files and $this->ftp->mkdir() work just fine.
Any ideas why files won't be uploaded?
I'm posting an answer to my own question because the problem was my own ignorance.
private $server_folder = 'my_server_directory/';
should have been
private $server_folder = '/my_server_directory/';
I swear I tried that syntax while trouble shooting my problem, but I must have changed something else too that broke the mirroring at the same time, hiding the answer from me.

works fine, I'm sure that your permission settings are ok.
If
$this->ftp->list_files()
works fine, I'm sure that your connection settings are ok too.
I guess your SQL backup files are starting with dot

I hope you can help me with my problem.
I have a local site that reads data from DBF files on a terminal within the network. So what I did, I shared the DBF files on a PC running Windows XP, with full read/write permission.
When the PHP script is run on the Ubuntu server, it will first ping the PC on the network. After confirming that it is connected, it will mount the shared files within the server. Please note that the directory /mnt has 777 permissions and it is set to subdirectories as well. The owner is also www-data which is the user for PHP.
The script is able to read the data from the DBF files using this setup. I use the below script to read the data from the dbf file:

for($counter=1;$counter<=dbase_numrecords($db1);$counter++){

The script above works, but only for reading the data. When I change to:
dbase_open("/mnt/test.dbf", 2)
it should have read and write access, However it does not let me remove the rows that were already read. I use:

dbase_delete_record($db1, $count);
}
dbase_pack($db1);
but it doesnt work. I also tried to put dbase_pack inside the loop, but still the same. Here is a screenshot of the error:

I'm having a strange problem using ftp_get() on one of the two identical instances. One is on localhost and another on an actual server. I'm using the following to download a file via FTP. Both of the instances download from the same FTP servers with the same credentials and same paths.

On my localhost, I can download the same file over and over, and it doesn't matter what the file name on the FTP server is or where it's located.
On second instance, which is identical to the localhost's (i.e. pulled from the same git repo) in terms of code, I can download a file once, but the same file cannot be downloaded again, and ftp_get() returns false. If I change the name of the file on the FTP server, I can download it, but after that it won't work again. i.e. ftp_get() will return false.
I don't have access to the FTP server log. If it's available, I'm going to try to get it today from the host. But can anyone think of a reason this might be happening? ftp_get() just returns true or false without any explanation, so I'm pretty stuck with this.
I'm using PHP 5.4, and I have no idea what the spec is of the FTP (regular FTP) server.
As discussed, it sounded like ftp_get was successfully obtaining the file and writing it locally. I wonder whether due to a permissions problem, when it tries to write the file locally again, it fails. Thus, the FTP channel itself is fine, and the problem is just local.
I'm somewhat surprised at this though, as I would imagine PHP would have raised a warning. Is your error_reporting set to allow this whilst you are debugging?
I'm making a utility that provides a GUI to easy edit certain values in a csv file on a remote server. My boss wants the utility in php running on the private webserver. I'm new to php, but I was able to get the GUI file modifier working locally without issues. The final piece now is rather than the local test file I need to grab a copy of the requested file off of the remote server, edit it, and then replace the old file with the edited one. My issue is uploading and downloading the file.
When I searched for a solution I found the following:
(note in each of these I am just trying to move a test file)

This solution has the error Fatal error: Call to undefined function ssh2_connect() which I have learned is because the function is not a part of the default php installation.
In closing, is there any easy way to read/write files to the remote server through php either by changing permissions, having the php extension installed, or a different way entirely that will work. Basically I'm trying to find the solution that requires the least settings changes to the server because I am not the administrator and would have to go through a round about process of getting any changes done. If something does need to be changed instructions on doing so or a link to instructions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a php script that logs into my servers via the ftp function, and backs up the entire thing easily and quickly, but I can't seem to find a way to let the script determine the folder where the main index file is located.
For example, I have 6 servers with a slew of ftp accounts all set up differently. Some log into the FTP root that has httpdocs/httpsdocs/public_html/error_docs/sub_domains and folders like that, and some log in directly to the httpdocs where the index file is. I only want to backup the main working web files and not all the other stuff that may be in there
I've set up a way to define the working directory, but that means I have to have different scripts for each server or backup I want to do.
Is it possible to have the php script find or work out the main web directory?
One option would be to set up a database that has either the directory to use or nothing if the ftp logs in directly to that directory, but I'm going for automation here.
If it's not possible I'll go with the database option though.
You cannot figure out through FTP alone what the root directory configured in apache is - unless you fetch httpd.conf and parse it, which I'm fairly sure you don't want to do. Presumably you are looping to do this backup from multiple servers with the same script?
If so, just define everything in an array, and loop it with a foreach and all the relevant data will be available in each iteration.
So I would do something like this:

No, you can't do it reliably without knowledge of how Apache is setup for each of those domains. You'd be better off with the database/config file route. One-time setup cost for that plus a teensy bit of maintenance as sites are added/modded/removed.
You'll probably spend days getting a detector script going, and it'll fail the next time some unknown configuration comes up. Attemping to create an AI is hard... you have to get it to the Artificial Stupidity level first (e.g. the MS Paperclip).
I have Wamp (server called emerald) running and Mamp running on my Mac. People register on Mamp. Emerald is basically file hosting.
Emerald connects to Mamp's mysql database, to login users. However, I want to create a directories for new registrations on Emerald using PHP.
How can I do this? I have tried using this code:

But had no luck. It basically needs to connect the other server and create a directory, in the name of the user.

You can't create directories through http. You need a filesystem connection to the remote location (a local hard disk, or a network share for example).
The easiest way that doesn't require setting up FTP, SSH or a network share would be to put a PHP script on Emerald:

Create a script on another server that creates the dir and call it remotely.
Make sure you have security check (+a simple password at least)
There is no generic method to access remote server filesystems. You have to use a file transfer protocol and server software to do so. One option would be SSH, which however requires some setup.
$thisdir = "ssh2.sftp://user:pass#192.168.1.71/directory/";
On Windows you might get FTP working more easily, so using an ftp:// url as directory might work.
As last alternative you could enable WebDAV (the PUT method alone works for file transfers, not creating directories) on your WAMP webserver. (But then you probably can't use the raw PHP file functions, probably needs a wrapper class or curl to utilize it.)
