How do I edit the code of a WordPress site? - php

I am helping out a family member with their WordPress blog and he/she wanted to have the comments show on the main front page. This way, users don't have to click through the title to add a comment. If that is impossible, he/she wanted to have instructions like "click here to add a comment" near the title.
I know how to write html/css etc., so I would just go in and type in some code but I don't have an FTP account. Is there a way to edit the html of a WordPress site through the WordPress Dashboard menu thing? I would ask for a FTP account, but I doubt he/she knows how to create one. Also, would doing this really screw things up for WordPress? Any and all help is appreciated. If needed I can give the URL, but I would rather not have people trying to post comments and mess around with the site. Thanks!

The easiest way is indeed to have an FTP access and edit the blog's theme directly (in /wp-content/themes/nameofyourtheme. Otherwise, you can also do it from the Admin panel. Go to Appearance, then click on "Editor". You'll then be able to edit all the theme's files.
Edit:
If you want to change the layout of the posts, the file you'll want to edit is single.php.

You can edit the site through the dashboard. When you are making a post you can change it to html and create your own things.

Unless there is a plugin for this. Which there might even be. But, since i have no idea and fast googling said nothing.
You will have to edit the theme files /wp-content/themes/Your-Theme/
You will have to take something like <?php comments_template(); ?> from single.php file and move it to index.php file somewhere after where you should find something like this <?php the_content(''); ?>
single.php Holds the article page.
index.php Holds the "home" page.
Is this hosted in wordpress.com?
In the control panel you can find Appearance > editor in there you can edit the files. Thought i think that it is very likely that you wont be able to save your edits due to file permissions.
Also if its a paid hosting they quite often send you these details on email.. I mean Ftp acc and pass.

Wordpress Admin - Cannot see all pages

For some reason, I've pushed a theme via Git to Wordpress and since then (I am not 100% sure if it's because of that) I cannot see all the pages anymore. I can access them on the front-end and get the page code from inspect element, otherwise I can't edit those pages directly from Wordpress.
It seems that another admin switched the language and I was only able to view the pages made in that particular language. Silly mistake from my side. Thank you for the answers. I will keep the post opened in case somebody goes through the same thing and oversees this aspect.

Finding and editing a WordPress site in cpanel w/o access to WordPress

I have a client who needs his website edited, he is no longer in contact with the original creator of the site, and it seems that the creator used WordPress to make the website. I've been able to access the page through cPanel but cannot locate the HTML files necessary to do things such as editing text. I have the ability to change images but the owner would like to remove some pages, etc.
There are also tons of PHP files for the WordPress extensions and such, but I know nothing about PHP.
Would I need access to the wp-admin account that designed the page in order to modify the text?
Wordpress stores page content in a database, which is subsequently loaded by a collection of php files. You cannot change the content or looks of a wordpress site by changing html files.
The easiest way to change content is to log in to the wordpress dashboard of the website. If you don't have the password, you can open up phpmyadmin via cpanel, browse to the wordpress database and find the *yourwebsiteinitials*_users table. In there you can choose one of the accounts that should be there and click edit, then edit the user_pass column, and simply type a new password in value and set function to md5. Then you can go to *yourwebaddress*/wp-login.php in your browser and login with the user you just edited and the new password.
Alternatively you can find posts in the _posts table and change content via phpmyadmin, but it's much easier to do this via the dashboard.
There could be a few things you need to be aware of: and I believe you have a good understanding of WordPress. If not you may want to watch some tutorials about it.
Themes: You need to find out if the previous developer develop with custom template and maybe he hard coded all the text inside themes file which located wp-content/themes/{name of the theme}/ {other file}, in this case, if you are not aware of WordPress theme development or how it structure, I suggest you watch some quick tutorial on it and there are tons.
Yes, wp-admin is the place where you can find all the pages listed or posts or whatever content. By editing page, you easily can change the text or delete the page which not require or add a new page.
Just find what is the way it's coded. then you will able to follow
You can log into the WordPress dashboard from the cPanel, following these steps:
Login to cPanel.
Scroll down to the Softaculous Apps Installer section and click on the WordPress icon:
You will be directed to the WordPress Install tab.
Scroll down to the Current Installations section.
Click on the admin icon to login to the WordPress dashboard without a password:
You will then reach the WordPress admin dashboard- voila!
if you want delete page in WORDPRESS you need to login wordpress and delete from pages and if you need delete custom php pages you need to go to cpanel and public html folder your page name or delete from wordpress go to /public_html/wp-content/themes/active theme name/ and find there page name there extenstion of pages is like pagename.php or pagename.html.

Standard HTML & CSS to wordpress page

I created a webpage in Standard HTML and CSS and everything looks / works exactly how I want it too.
Now I need it to appear as it is on a wordpress site (http://www.texasenergyessentials.com/). I already created a template page and can see it in the template select in the wordpress "add new page" window. I was hoping I could just select the template and leave the text editor blank but that doesn't seem to be the case. All I get is a completely un-formatted page that says welcome guest.
What is the easiest way to get https://gist.github.com/anonymous/8545681 to work on the aforementioned wordpress site? ?
Thanks!
P.S. Please don't link any codex files I just spent 2 hours digging around in them :(
Try to read and understand how http://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop works
Install this theme https://code.google.com/p/wordpress-naked/ and try to work your way to the desired theme by editing theme files. That will be much easier.
Maybe the problem can be understood by reading the template hierarchy:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy
(especially check the visual overview)
If you name your file page-[insert-page-id-here].php Wordpress will use it for the page you've created. Get your page id by editing the page and looking it up in the url.

Edit WP html code, but cannot find the page

I am new to Word Press and I have been assigned to change something at work in our homepage.
I am always worked with raw HTML/CSS/php files, so I am a bit out of place here.
The page in question is the following: GAN Integrity Solutions Products
Inspecting the html I found where the CSS is (in the theme folder).
If I go in word press under pages, and I choose Products (which is the page I want) there is not content in it even in the text or visual editor. (but the page does indeed have content)
I installed the plugin called "Always edit in HTML" but it only removes the Visual tab and does not really replace it with the HTML tab (like I have seen a friend of mine has).
Also I am currently using WP v. 3.7.1 and I have not update because I still had to learn what happens when one updates (does it screw up my site? I can't afford to screw it up).
Anyone have any idea of what I am doing wrong or how I can solve this?
Btw the different "products" are created individually under "Portfolio" but what I would like to edit is that first link page html. What I need to do is instead of having pictures in the "squares" and then text as ones mouse over them, the reverse.
I would appreciate it!
Can you try to login in Wordpress?
You should go to pages and search for the product page.
Then check the template part.
Go to your themes map again and search for that template.
Your code should be there.
This is my first comment. Hope it is helpfull.

How to create a thumbnails page in WordPress

I'm creating a WordPress photoblog theme and I want to create a thumbnails page that sits between index.php and single.php.
The idea is that when someone clicks on a blog post, they go to the thumbnails page to see all photos attached to that post and they then click on an individual image to be redirected to the blog entry. Does WP templating support this?
WordPress just loads the files inside of the theme's directory, so you aren't limited by WP much.
If you want, why not just make the index.php file have a section which runs only when it receives a $_GET variable denoting that the user has requested the thumbnails page?
This is sort of what I mean:
single.php:
<?php
if (isset($_GET['gallery']))
{
// Show the gallery.
} else {
// Show the main content instead
}
?>
And on index.php, you could add the gallery parameter to the URLs:
Title of Article
But that's just the way I'd do it.
I don't see what you mean by "the user clicks on a blog post", but in short, you could modify the main template to write a link like:
Show Photos
Then write some custom plugin to manage a set of photos per blog post.
Finally, create a page "showphotos" and assign it to a theme file and add the necessary PHP code to generate the thumbnails inside of it.
The problem with your question is that you're asking something similar to "how do I build a wooden tower"? There are different ways, and each depend on different use cases, none of which are specifically tackled by your question. Don't forget that we on SO are not here to create plugins for you, so don't ask for elaborate systems and instead focus on what's bugging you.
