I am a beginner at both Actionscript3 and PHP, and I'm trying to get Henry Jone's movie clip to jpeg code to work for me, as seen here:
http://henryjones.us/articles/using-the-as3-jpeg-encoder
I downloaded the source and then uploaded the .swf and the .php in the same directory. However, when I click "download your sketch," it downloads the .php file instead of a jpeg.
The .swf I uploaded can be seen here:
http://www.snut.org/storage/scrntest/sketch.swf
I didn't change any of the code from the source I downloaded, so I can't figure our what the problem is. Can anyone help?
Rule of thumb - any time your web server downloads .php files instead of rendering the output of the file it is a good sign that your server isn't set up to handle PHP. You need to tell Apache to use PHP, google around for "install PHP on Apache web server" and that should get you started.
Basically .php files are just text files, so unless you have something telling your web server to treat .php files different from normal text files then it'll just assume the user wants to download the file that's being linked.

so, I have a setup with apache2, php5, Mysql, etc... everything seems to work alright and I'm using default directory /var/www/html.
I can upload pdfs into directory /var/www/html/uploads, and also display the pdfs uploaded into directory in list of links by using scandir(php method).
I've also checked permissions on the directory, pdf files, and /etc/mime.types.
And ofc, the files are there too. I have also tried naming my pdf files with lower case without any special characters.
The error code is 404 Not found:The requested URL /var/www/html/uploads/cv.pdf was not found on this server. When I try to download the file, by right-clicking link and downloading, i just get a broken pdf that isnt readable. However, the pdf files seem perfectly fine, since when I scp them back to my local computer and read them they're not broken at all.
Any suggestions on why I may be experiencing this error?
All suggestions and help appreciated.
Im working on an upload script, and i want a user to be able to upload any file.
I had it al working on localhost, i added
php_flag engine off
AddType text/plain php html shtml php5 php4 php3 cgi asp aspx xml
to my htaccess in the upload folder, and it showed the source of PHP, html and all other files. Exactly as i wanted to.
Now i tried to upload it to a real webserver, and unfortunately my host does not allow such .htaccess files.
I tried openinging the files with file_get_content() and fopen() and giving them a text/plain header.. but nothing works. It first executes the scripts and shows the output in my textarea.
Do you guys have any suggestions on how i can fix this without .htaccess ?
Thanks!
Don't upload files into the webroot and let people access them directly. As you say, .php scripts (and probably a lot more) get executed that way. A classic way for arbitrary code execution attacks.
Store uploaded files outside the webroot where they're not publicly accessible and create a script that allows users to download the files, for example using readfile or Apache mod_xsendfile, after having done the necessary permission checks.

I am having an issue when using mime types in PHP.
As a security feature, I am placing any content uploaded to my server by users in a directory outside of public_html. When a user wants to access their uploaded files in the browser, I use php script to pull the file from the secure folder using readfile and header('content-type'), the issue I am having so far only pertains to mp3s.
When I try and use this for a mp3 file, the file doesn't actually play in the browser, but M4As work fine. And it isn't every mp3 file too, it just seems that when I get the mime-type of some mp3 files php can't tell that they are mp3s. The mp3s also playback fine if I download them, so it isn't an issue with the file per say (unless the file has the wrong mime-type somehow).
How do I get it to tell that they ARE mp3s?
My getFile code is here: codepad.org
Any help would be appreciated greatly, I'll even give you some of my tracking cookies!
For mp3s, did you try:
header("Content-Type: audio/mpeg");
I went to edit this PHP file - it's supposed to generate those captcha security images on contact forms - the images werent working, so I was going to see if there was a broken path or something i could fix simply.
But when I opened the file it looked like this:
http://mydomainsample.com/explosion/screenshots/Screen%20Shot%202012-05-17%20at%209.34.14%20AM.png
complete gibberish.
Is it possible this happened somehow while downloading the file from the server? I did not have ftp access to the site originally - we got control of the domain and transferred it from one host to another.
I used site sucker to backup the site before transferring, but it downloads php files as html files. you end up with filename.php.html.
in the past this has never turned the php into incomprehensible gibberish, so i dont understand why it did now.
The problem is, you cannot use programs like "site sucker" to get PHP files. This is because when you get a PHP file from a URL, the file is executed, and you're getting the output of the script. That's why you get .php.html.
It doesn't "turn the php into incomprehensible gibberish", the server runs the script and you're getting the output. Most of the time the output is HTML, which you can open as text. In this case, the script's output is a PNG file, thus why you see "gibberish". Rename the file to .png, then you'll see the image.
You need to get FTP access in order to get the PHP source.
That's a PNG image, not PHP source code.
The file actually looks like a PNG image, maybe you just downloaded output the PHP script has generated?
I am trying to download some files. I have written a php script that can gather all of the address of the pdf files I need to download into a array but the file names on that server are odd. How does one go about downloading pdf files with php?
you can try (if I understand your question correctly)
file_put_contents('/your/file/name.pdf',
file_get_contents('http://www.example.com/oddFile.pdf'))
Check out the file or file_get_contents functions. It can take URLs as well as local filenames.
