$qtnid is the name of a radio button, i used the post method to know which one among the radio buttons is selected. The radio button has the same name with different values.It return an undefined error when itried to use alert function inside the showNextQuest function in the javascript. plz help me out.

If the values are strings you should also put single quotes around your PHP if you want to pass the value as a string:

I have a markup like this

so when the add new customer will be clicked it should show some message. like this

This is because if you click a button within a form it doesnt actually submit the form.
Try using

Button elements aren't linked to anything in HTML. PHP won't detect if you click on a button.
You have to use a form or an AJAX query in order to populate the $_POST variable.

THE solution of this problem is to use the NAME attribute of the tag input/button.

I think you can also use the value attribute of button tag, this is definitively not possible with input tag.
If you need to use an ID or another variable, use name="submitDelete[888]"
Then, check it with PHP:

So many years later, I like button because it allows to display a text or an image independently of the value returned.

you can give a name and a value to each of your buttons. It will then show up under $_POST['submit']

You have to pass your value to the current file by declearing name and value for each.. then you can echo in your php script in order to know which one is clicked.
This form should calculate numbers and save
Now there are two buttons One is call Calculator and two call Save

I get the form action is going to file name save.php And I do not want it that way
How can I set it up that button do something else

You can have all the logic in a single PHP script (no need to direct to a different script depending on the button). If the logic is complicated, use include statements in order to separate the code.
Name the buttons differently:

Then in PHP:

If you really need different PHP script, then you'll have to go with Javascript (function will change the form action when a submit is clicked).
Since you are now using two submit buttons, both will submit the form and go to save.php.
Make your "calculator" button an input type=button instead of submit, and handle it via JavaScript.
Just FYI:
HTML5 allows to define a different form target URL by specifying the formaction attribut on a submit button – but browser support is lousy as of now.

Your button is type="button"; to get the form to submit, it needs to be type="submit". Try updating it with this and it should work (also pending you form has action="post", or no action specified; the default is post):

Also, you're using onclick="Save" in your button. This indicates you have a corresponding JavaScript function named Save() - though, per your code examples you do not show one. I'm assuming that this is in error and can safely be removed (the value="Save" can also be removed as you only need to check isset($_POST['Save']) and not it's actual value). All changes in-place should give you:

Currently, I have an HTML form where the user will enter a title and text for an article. When it is time to submit, they are presented with two buttons. One is to 'save' their article without publishing it, and the other is to 'publish' the article and make it public.
I'm using PHP, and I am trying to figure out how to tell which button was used, in order to store the appropriate corresponding value in the database.

Probably should have mentioned this earlier, but I cannot assign the buttons values because the button is an image, so the text would show up above it.
Give each input a name attribute. Only the clicked input's name attribute will be sent to the server.

Edit: Since this keeps getting upvotes I went ahead and changed the weird alt/value code to real submit inputs. I believe the original question asked for some sort of image buttons but there are so much better ways to achieve that nowadays instead of using input[type=image].

If you can't put value on buttons. I have just a rough solution. Put a hidden field. And when one of the buttons are clicked before submitting, populate the value of hidden field with like say 1 when first button clicked and 2 if second one is clicked. and in submit page check for the value of this hidden field to determine which one is clicked.
