I'm relatively new to using Vagrant and Chef. I'm currently running Ubuntu Lucid 64 and using the Opscode PHP cookbook which installs PHP 5.3.2, as a package, by default. I'd like to install PHP 5.3.8 or 9 (either from source or as a package) but I can't seem to figure out how to configure it correctly. I have copied over the dependent cookbooks (build-essential, xml, mysql). This is what I have so far:
# vagrant_main/recipes/default.rb
require_recipe "apt"
node.override["php"]["version"] = "5.3.9"
require_recipe "php::source"
But I am getting an error. Here are the relevant lines of the stack trace:
NameError: wrong constant name DebianBeforeSqueeze?

Update: If I tell the PHP recipe not to worry about MySQL, it seems to install fine...
node.override["php"]["version"] = "5.3.9"
node.override["php"]["configure_options"]["mysql"] = false
require_recipe "php::source"
...however, Apache doesn't seem to know which version of PHP it's running. php_info() is reporting that it's using PHP 5.3.2, but command line (php -v) is correctly reporting 5.3.9.
What am I doing wrong?
In /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.load you can detemine which version of php will Apache use (it has to be installed).

I use MAMP 5.5 (383) on my macOS Catalina (10.15.6) for general PHP related development. Some of my projects require LDAP connectivity for various reasons.
My process works well using MAMP, but recently I noticed that if I switch from whoever PHP version I have available in either app from PHP 7.2 to PHP 7.3 or above, all LDAP support stops; I get errors like this:
[30-Jul-2020 23:59:14 America/New_York] PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function ldap_connect() in /Users/Jake/htdocs/ldap_test.php:3
Stack trace:
#0 {main}
And the only command in that file is simply a test ldap_connect() command.
In MAMP when I do a phpinfo() call, when it is running PHP 7.3.8 I see no LDAP references even in the configure command. But when I switch to PHP 7.2.21 I see --with-ldap in the configure command as well as this:
LDAP Support: enabled
RCS Version: $Id: 3839f871a91c293a52322c63329c68db23a0290a $
Total Links: 0/unlimited
API Version: 3001
Vendor Name: OpenLDAP
Vendor Version: 20428
Why is this?
I have tried to upgrade to MAMP 5.7 that has PHP 7.3 as well as PHP 7.4 but I get the same results; no LDAP support.
Has something happened in the way that OpenLDAP is supported in packages like this? I found this Homebrew related discussion which states the following and refers to this reported issue in an official PHP bug report:
“I can patch PHP 7.2 and older to use system LDAP again, but PHP 7.3 will require new symbols that only openldap exposes.”
Does this effectively mean that LDAP support in macOS is dead for PHP 7.3 and above unless there is a patch to PHP code or on the other side in the macOS implementation of OpenLDAP?
I use Ubuntu and CentOS as well and I can easily enable LDAP support via package installers there. But that’s little help when using MAMP for desktop development.
Looking for a solution that centers on the MAMP application and would like to avoid Homebrew or other setups where I am effectively building an M(acOS)AMP server from scratch on macOS.
Looks like this issue has been solved as of MAMP 6.3
LDAP support is back in the versions of PHP that come with MAMP 6.3 and higher.
Deciding to check a newer version of MAMP — since PHP 8 is looming and sticking with PHP 7.2 is no longer a real option — I downloaded MAMP 6.3 and it comes with PHP 7.4.12 and PHP 8.0.0 installed.
And without saying anything else… Both versions of PHP here have LDAP support baked in right out of the box! Confirmed by using a basic ldap_connect command as well as taking a few small apps I have developed around the block in these new versions of PHP and all works great!
So it seems like the PHP 7.3 cycles for MAMP had a weird “no-LDAP” blip. I recommend anyone wanting to move forward in their code, just download MAMP 6.3 and use PHP 7.4 at least and you should be solid.
The vendor version of LDAP contained in MAMP 6.3 is 20448 for anyone who needs to know that.
I installed Visual Code Studio w/ESLint. It won't operate because it is reporting "Language server needs at least PHP 7 installed. Version found: 5.5.38". After researching, I discovered that it seems to be looking at the pre-installed MAC OSX php version. I downloaded and ran PHP 7.1 onto the Mac, changed the PATH variables in ~/.profile, as recommended. I made sure that the LoadModule php5_module ... line in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf was commented out, and restarted (reboot of machine). When I do: > php -v it yields the new version (7.1), but the error report from VSC is the same. What am I missing?
I'm not necessarily sure what you're missing, but I'd use Homebrew, then once installed type the following into terminal to install php 7.1
brew install homebrew/php/php71
You can use the following to switch between versions:
brew unlink php71
And then to link (and vice versa):
brew link php55
To get the version of the PHP that is currently in PATH, type
php --version
Trust me, I've been doing LAMP development for seven years and it's a pain to not use Homebrew if you're using a Mac. I've also used VS Code before I started using PHP Storm, and this method worked for me.
Recently I installed XAMPP for doing local development on my Windows 7 machine. I honestly didn't think PHP was installed at all before hand. I installed the latest version of XAMPP and configured for php 5.6.24. I created some virtual hosts and everything seemed to work.
I was having an issue and I needed to confirm which version of PHP I was using so I opened up my command line and typed php -v. For some reason it is reporting I'm using PHP 5.4.25. The exact line is PHP 5.4.25 (cli) (built: Feb 5 2014 21:19:58)
I don't recall using this version (I had Visual Studio Community installed recently, is that related?). I don't understand either why my CLI is reporting one version, when XAMPP supposedly installed another version. Am I missing something? I need to run some gpm commands for the latest version of Grav CMS but when I do it says it required at least 5.5.9.
It is possible to have multiple versions of php installed.
You will want to ensure that you are executing the php-cli that came with XAMPP.
It sounds like you have another version of php installed and is in your PATH so that when you run php that version is loaded.
You can use the where command to find out what file is being loaded.
From the terminal type: where php
I am not a windows guy but there is a which command on linux. Apparently this is the command for windows. Here is a SO post about it:
Is there an equivalent of 'which' on the Windows command line?
Anyways, you may want to remove that php file and possibly create a symbolic link in its place for the XAMPP version of php-cli
If you remove/rename the file and the new php-cli is not in your path, you will probably get an error as the system will not know what php is.
The solution to this is to uninstall all the xampp's that are installed and then fresh install xampp with php version > 7.
Everything should work fine then.
What happened to me was that I had installed xampp two times. One
xampp on my C:// (version 5.6) and one xampp on my D:// (version 7.2)
When I did the command on my D:// xampp
php --version
It took the xampp php version from the C:// instead of the D://.
I need the MongoDB PHP driver on my CentOS 5.4 machine. My PHP version is 5.1.6. I downloaded the RPM and installed it. That created several files in /usr/bin directory. I copied
/usr/bin/mongo
to
/usr/lib/php/modules
which was what extension_dir showed on doing phpinfo();.
I also added
extension=mongo.so
in /etc/php.ini.
However on executing my PHP script, i still get
Mongo class not found.
What's going wrong here ?
Also, my phpinfo() shows PHP version 5.1.6 whereas running PHP from command line shows 5.3.3. Could anything be wrong with that ?
Thanks in advance.
You're saying your webserver and command line PHP report different versions. These are going to be installed in different locations, and their extensions are API incompatible with each other.
When you installed the php_mongo extension, it may have used the command line php to determine the directory to install the extension to.
Make sure you have the correct php_mongo for the php version of your webserver, and it is in the correct extensions directory. (get the directory from the php.ini returned by phpinfo())
I hope you realise PHP 5.1 is also many years out of date. Unless you have a specific reason to use a version that old, you should also look at upgrading to a more recent version.
Edit:
Just read your comment "I must also mention that /usr/bin/mongo is a binary executable file but its not having a .so extension. Im copying it as is to /usr/lib/php/modules"
No no no! :)
This is the mongo command line client. This is not the PHP extension!
You can run a find /* -name "mongo.so" to see where the installer put the file, this will probably also give you an indication of which version of PHP it was installed for.
It looks as though you are confusing the RPM-packages for the MongoDB server with the requirements to install the MongoDB PHP driver. The PHP driver provides access to the server from your PHP applications, and does not install any command line tools.
restart httpd !
yum service httpd restart
I have just bought a VPS running Ubuntu and I need to install the LAMP stack with PHP 5.1.6. The VPS came with no PHP installed (checked this from the shell with php -v) and with Apache/2.2.12 installed. I installed PHP 5.1.6 from source and compiled it with Apache 2.2 (using libapache2-mod-php5), tried a phpinfo() test which worked fine, however, phpinfo() shows the PHP version as 5.2.1 (with JSON enabled), whereas running php-v in the shell shows as 5.1.6. Anyone any ideas what might be happening here? I need to ensure I am running PHP 5.1.6.
Thanks in advance for any help!
php -v gives you the version of the cli installation of php, while phpinfo will give you the version which got installed as apache module.
If you are not using cli php anywhere, you should be fine with running php scripts off apache.
But ideally you should fix this.
