First page request on website very slow - php

The first page I load from my site after not visiting it for 20+ mins is very slow. Subsequent page loads are 10-20x faster. What are the common causes of this symptom? Could my server be sleeping or something when it's not receiving http requests?

I will answer this question generally because I'm sure it's something that confuses a lot of newcomers.
The really short answer is: caching.
Just about every program in your computer uses some form of caching to remember data that has already been loaded/processed recently, so it doesn't have to do the work again.
The size of the cache is invariably limited, so stuff has to be thrown out. And 99% of the time the main criteria for expiring cache entries is, how long ago was this last used?
Your operating system caches file data that is read from disk
PHP caches pages and keeps them compiled in memory
The CPU caches memory in its own special faster memory (although this may be less obvious to most users)
And some things that are not actually a cache, work in the same way as cache:
virtual memory aka swap. When there not enough memory available for certain programs, the operating system has to make room for them by moving chunks of memory onto disk. On more recent operating systems the OS will do this just so it can make the disk cache bigger.
Some web servers like to run multiple copies of themselves, and share the workload of requests between them. The copies individually cache stuff too, depending on the setup. When the workload is low enough the server can terminate some of these processes to free up memory and be nice to the rest of the computer. Later on if the workload increases, new processes have to be started, and their memory loaded with various data.

It's probably not sleeping. It's just not visited for a while and releases it's resources. It takes time to get it started again.
If the site is visited frequently by many users it should response quickly every time.

It sounds like it could be caching. Is the server running on the same machine as your browser? If not, what's the network configuration (same LAN, etc...)?

Apache server slow when high HTTP API call

I am running HTTP API which should be called more than 30,000 time per minute simultaneously.
Currently I can call it 1,200 time per minute. If I call 1200 time per minute, all the request are completed and get response immediately.
But if I called 12,000 time per minute simultaneously it take 10 minute to complete all the request. And during that 10 minute, I cannot browse any webpage on the server. It is very slow

Sounds like a congestion problem.
It doesn't matter how quick your script/page handling is, if the next request gets done within the execution time of the previous:
It is going to use resources (cpu, ram, disk, network traffic and connections).
And make everything parallel to it slower.
There are multiple things you could do, but you need to figure out what exactly the problem is for your setup and decide if the measure produces the desired result.
If the core problem is that resources get hogged by parallel processes, you could lower connection limits so more connections go in to wait mode, which keeps more resources available for actually handing out a page instead of congesting everything even more.

If the server accepts connections quicker then it can handle them, you are going to have a problem which ever you change. It should start dropping connections at some point. If you cram down French baguettes down its throat quicker then it can open its mouth, it is going to suffocate either way.
If the system gets overwhelmed at the network side of things (transfer speed limit, maximum possible of concurent connections for the OS etc etc) then you should consider using a load balancer. Only after the loadbalancer confirms the server has the capacity to actually take care of the page request it will send the user further.
This usually works well when you do any kind of processing which slows down page loading (server side code execution, large volumes of data etc).
Optimise performance
There are many ways to execute PHP code on a webserver and I assume you use appache. I am no expert, but there are modes like CGI and FastCGI for example. Which can greatly enhance execution speed. And tweaking settings connected to these can also show you what is happening. It could for example be that you use to little number of PHP threats to handle that number of concurrent connections.

There is no 'best fit for all' solution here. To fix it, you need to figure out what the bottle neck for the server is. And act accordingly.
12000 Calls per minute == 200 calls a second.
You could limit your test case to a multitude of those 200 and increase/decrease it while changing settings. Your goal is to dish that number of requestst out in a shortest amount of time as possible, thus ensuring the congestion never occurs.
That said: consequences.
When you are going to implement changes to optimise the maximum number of page loads you want to achieve you are inadvertently going to introduce other conditions. For example if maximum ram usage by Apache would be the problem, the upping that limit will ensure better performance, but heightens the chance the OS runs out of memory when other processes also want to claim more memory.
Adding a load balancer adds another possible layer of failure and possible slow downs. Yes you prevent congestion, but is it worth the slow down caused by the rerouting?
Upping performance will increase the load on the system, making it possible to accept more concurrent connections. So somewhere along the line a different bottle neck will pop up. High traffic on different processes could always end in said process crashing. Apache is a very well build web server, so it should in theories protect you against said problem, however tweaking settings wrongly could still cause crashes.
So experiment with care and test before you use it live.

Laravel4 memory consumption concerns

Currently I am developing an application using Laravel 4. I installed profiler to see the stats about my app. This is the screenshot:

You can see that it consumes 12.25 MB memory for each request (very simple page) in my vagrant (Ubuntu 64 bit + Nginx + PHP 5.3.10+ MySQL). Do you think this is too much ? This means If I have 100 concurrent connections, the memory consumption will be about 1 GB. I think this is too much but what do you think ?
It loads 237 files for each request. Do you think this is too much ?
When I deploy this app to the my server (Centos 6.4 with Apache + PHP 5.5.3 with Zend OPcache + MySQL) the memory consumption decreases dramatically. This is the screenshot from the server:

No, you don't really need to worry about this.
12MB is not really a large amount for a PHP program. And 100 concurrent connections is a lot.
To put it into context, assume your PHP page takes half a second to run, that would mean you'd need to have 12000 page loads per minute to achieve a consistent 100 concurrent connections. That's a lot more traffic than any of my sites get, I can tell you that.
Of course, if your page takes longer than half a second to load, this number will come down quickly, and your 100 concurrent connections can become a possibility much more easily.
This is one reason why it's a really good idea to focus on performance‡ -- the quicker your program can finish running, the quicker it can free up its memory for the next visitor. In fact unless you have a really major memory usage problem (which you don't), performance is probably more important in this context than the amount of memory being used.
In any case, if you do have 100 concurrent connections, you're likely to get issues with your server software before you have them with PHP. Apache has a default limit to the max number of connections, and it is a lot lower than 100. (you can raise it, of course, but if you really are getting that kind of traffic, you'll likely be wanting more servers anyway)
As for the 12M memory usage, you're not really ever likely to get much less than that for a PHP program. PHP needs a chunk of memory just in order to run in the first place, and the framework will need a chunk too, so most of your 12M will be due to that. This means that although your small program may be using 12M, it does not follow that a larger program would use twice as much. So you probably don't need to worry too much about it.
If you do have high traffic, and performance issues as a result, there are various ways you can mitigate the problem. The main one is by using caching. PHP 5.5 comes with an OpCache module built-in, which will cache your programs for you so that it doesn't have to do all the bootstrap work such as loading all the files every time. For some systems, this can have a dramatic impact on performance.
There are also other layers of caching you can use, such as a server-level page cache like Varnish, which will cache your static pages so that PHP doesn't even need to be called if the page content hasn't changed.
(‡ of course there are other reasons for focussing on performance too, like keeping your visitors happy)

What can be causing an "exceeded process limit" error?

I launched a website about a week ago and I sent out an email blast to a mailing list telling everyone the website was live. Right after that the website went down and the general error log was flooded with "exceeded process limit" errors. Since then, I've tried to really clean up a lot of the code and minimize database connections. I will still see that error about once a day in the error log. What could be causing this error? I tried to call the web host and they said it had something to do with my code but couldn't point me in any direction as to what was wrong with the code or which page was causing the error. Can anyone give me any more information? Like for instance, what is a process and how many processes should I have?
Wow. Big question.
Obviously, your maxing out your apache child worker processes. To get a rough idea of how many you can create, use top to get the rough memory footprint of one http process. If you are using wordpress or another cms, it could easily be 50-100m each (if you're using the php module for apache). Then, assuming the machine is only used for web serving, take your total memory, subtract a chunk for OS use, then divide that by 100m (in this example). Thats the max worker processes you can have. Set it in your httpd.conf. Once you do this and restart apache, monitor top and make sure you don't start swapping memory. If you do, you have set too high a number of workers.
If there is any other stuff running like mysql servers, make space for that before you compute number of workers you can have. If this number is small, to roughly quote a great man 'you are gonna need a bigger boat'. Just kidding. You might see really high memory usage for a http process like over 100m. You can tweak your the max requests per child lower to shorten the life of a http process. This could help clean up bloated http workers.
Another area to look at is time response time for a request... how long does each request take? For a quick check, use firebug plugin for firefox and look at the 'net' tab to see how long it takes for your initial request to respond back (not images and such). If for some reason request are taking more than 1 or 2 seconds to respond, that's a big problem as you get sort of a log jam. The cause of this could be php code, or mysql queries taking too long to respond. To address this, make sure if you're using wordpress to use some good caching plugin to lower the stress on mysql.
Honestly, though, unless your just not utilizing memory by having too few workers, optimizing your apache isn't something easily addressed in a short post without detail on your server (memory, cpu count, etc..) and your httpd.conf settings.
Note: if you don't have server access you'll have a hard time figuring out memory usage.
The process limit is typically something enforced by shared webhost providers, and generally has to do with the number of processes executing under your account. This will typically equate to the number of connections made to your server at once (assuming one PHP process per each connection).
There are many factors that come into play. You should figure out what that limit is from your hosting provider, and then find a new one that can handle your load.

Improving network latency - online gaming site

I operate an online browser game that is very AJAX/database dependent, and the problem I am encountering is excessively high latency during peak hours.
I've created a simple AJAX ping that checks the server in a per-second loop, and the execution/response times of the 5 most recent pings are averaged into a "Connection Speed" that is displayed on the screen.
Most times, this latency records anywhere from 100-350ms, depending on internet speed, the client's other running webpages, and various other things. However, during peak hours on my server, namely 10PM-11PM EST, this latency becomes so bad that my AJAX functions stop working. The latency during these times can be around 2000ms, with some people seeing it as high as 6800ms.
My question is.. what would be the most likely cause of this? Is it a hardware issue on my server? Is it just unfeasible to create a browser game purely powered by AJAX? During these times, I often encounter issues on the server itself, with my control panel returning many "Cannot allocate memory for selected task" errors, yet when I run free through SSH, not even 10% of the RAM is being used.
You are experiencing contention somewhere in your web app or database. This can be in so many places and therefore has so many possible resolutions that it is impossible to list them. Some of the things you can think about:
No threads available to handle incoming requests because they are making synchronous calls to the database which will lock the thread until the database returns thus increasing latency
Contention at the databse level. Are you using partitioning for your data to support true concurrency?
Are you serving static content through your web app which could be retrieved as a directly addressable resource?
Are you load balancing your web app?
Are you using caching on the web app?
It's a bit like "how long is a piece of string?"

Optimize PHP, MYSQL community website performance

I own a community website of about 12.000 users (write heavy), 100 concurrent users max on a single VPS with 1Gb ram. The load rarely goes above 3 and response is quite good.
Currently a simple file cache is used to store DB query results to ease the load on the DB, but the website still can slow down over 220 concurrent users (load test).
How can I find out what the bottleneck is?
I assume that DB is fine as cache is working fine, however Disk IO could cause problem. Each pageload has about 10 includes and 10-20 querys from DB or from the file cache, plus lots of php processing.
I tried using memcache instead of the file cache, but to my suprise the load test seemed to like file cache more.
I plan to use Alternative PHP Cache, but I still don't really understand how that cache is invalidated. I have a singe index.php that handles all requests. Will the cache store the result for each individual request? Will it clear the cache automatically if one of my includes (or query result from cache) change?
Any other suggestions for finding bottlenecks (tried xdebug)?

APC doesn't cache output. It caches your compiled bytecode.
Essentially, a normal PHP request looks like this:
PHP files are parsed and compiled to bytecode
The PHP interpreter executes the bytecode
APC caches the result of the first step, so you aren't reparsing/recompiling the same code over and over again. By default, it still stat()s your PHP files on every request, to see if the file has been modified since its cached copy was compiled -- so any changes to your code will automatically invalidate the cached copy.
You can also use APC much like you'd use memcached, for storing arbitrary user data. Keep in mind, however:
A memcached server can serve data to multiple servers; data cached in APC can only really be used locally. Better to serve a gig of data from one memcached box to four servers, than to have 4 copies of that gig of data in APC on each individual server.
Memcached, in my experience, is better at handling large numbers of concurrent writes to a single cache key.
APC doesn't seem to cope very well with its cache filling up. Fragmentation increases, and performance drops.
Also, beware: unless you've set up some sort of locking mechanism, your file-based cache is likely to become corrupt due to simultaneous writes. If you have implemented locking, that may become a bottleneck of its own. IMO, concurrency is tricky -- let memcached/APC/the database deal with it.
You mention you used XDebug - what weren't you able to do? Typically, to start tracking down a bottleneck you enable profiling of a request and then view the resulting "cachegrind" file in KCacheGrind or WinCacheGrind.
As for using a cache system, a dynamic script such as yours will generally do something like this
construct a cache "key" from the unique inputs to the script
ask the caching system if it has data for that key. If has, you're good to go!
otherwise, do all the hard work to generate the data, and ask the caching system to store it under the desired key for next time.
APC Cache can help to speed things up further by caching the parsed version of the PHP code.
MySQL has its own query cache.
You can enable it by setting query_cache_size to more than 0.
The query results are taken from the cache if the query is repeated verbatim and does not contain certain things like non-deterministic functions, session variables and some other things describe here:
The cache for a query is invalidated by issuing any DML operation against any of the underlying queries.
I turned on and configured APC on the test server and got a performance increase of about 400%
300 concurrent users with response time 1,4 secs max :) Good for a start.

Original:
No APC: 220 concurrent users, server load 20, response time 5000ms
No APC: 250 concurrent users, server load 20+, site is unavailable
New:
APC enabled: 250 concurrent users, server load 2, response time is 600ms
APC enabled: 350 concurrent users, server load 10, response time is 1500ms
APC enabled: 500 concurrent users, server load 20, response is 5000ms + site is fully operational, but a bit slow but can be used normally

Query cache is disabled as the site is write heavy thus cache would be invalidated constantly for whole tables.
I would say that it's likely that your database is IO bound, I don't know exactly what a "VPS" is, but if it's some kind of VM, then there is almost guaranteed to be very poorly performing IO.
Get it on to real hardware ASAP; and get a sensible amount of ram (1G is tiny; 16G sounds more reasonable).
Then you may be able to tune your db so it can behave properly. How big are your data in total? If you can get all of them (or most of them) to fit in your database cache (not the dodgy query cache, the proper innodb buffer pool one), then do so.
I'm assuming you're using the innodb engine; if so, then set up the buffer pool to be big enough for all your data - if you don't have enough ram, buy more until you do (No, really!).
Then your db queries should be fast even if they're fairly bad (yes).
The tricky bit is, if you have a single machine, how to carve up ram usage between mysql and PHP - the web server (I assume Apache), particularly if you use prefork and lots of MaxClients, can use up loads of ram and deprive your database of it.
Get some decent monitoring on the job (with trending), and make changes carefully and record exactly when you made them.
