I am making a page on which i have to show thumb images, which later on will show in Light Box control.
For this i have to open the images folder, to get images. I use the following code for opening directory:
$handle = opendir('images')
But this code gives lot of errors, unable to open directory.
Instead when i use this code, given below, The whole page works fine, images are shown as thumbs and also in lightbox.
$handle = opendir('.')
Please any body, tell me how can i open a folder "images" placed in the same directory as my page.
You need to do this with opendir in this way:
<?php
$dir = "/etc/php5/";
// Open a known directory, and proceed to read its contents
if (is_dir($dir)) {
if ($dh = opendir($dir)) {
while (($file = readdir($dh)) !== false) {
echo "filename: $file : filetype: " . filetype($dir . $file) . "\n";
}
closedir($dh);
}
}
?>
As told at : http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.opendir.php
Or you will may be interested in using scandir. That is much more simpler:
<?php
$dir = '/tmp';
$files1 = scandir($dir);
$files2 = scandir($dir, 1);
print_r($files1);
print_r($files2);
?>
As told here: http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.scandir.php
Try out the glob method, it automatically opens the directory handler for you.
http://php.net/manual/en/function.glob.php
$handle = glob("images/*");
I also recommend you do a check for the right file type to prevent loading unnecessary items (if any).

So. I'm trying to make a simple PHP program that will read the contents of a directory. I've been working off W3Schools. And it's been working well, except for one small problem.
When this script runs, it posts two additional filen that don't exist - even if the directory is completely empty .
<?php
$dir = "./userphotos/";
// Open a directory, and read its contents
if (is_dir($dir)){
if ($dh = opendir($dir)){
while (($file = readdir($dh)) !== false){
print <<< HERE
<p>Filename: $file</p>
HERE;
}
closedir($dh);
}
}
?>
Any thoughts?
On Unix machines, each directory contains 2 hidden files.
. and .. these are references to the current and parent directories.
You should look into DirectoryInterator class
$dir = "./userphotos/";
foreach (new DirectoryIterator($dir) as $fileInfo) {
if($fileInfo->isDot() === false) {
echo $fileInfo->getFilename() . "<br>\n";
}
}
This example ignores the "dot" files
Also, you can look into RecursiveDirectoryIterator to do this recursively.
i have an application that is used to edit .txt files. the application is made up of 3 parts
Displays contents of a folder with the files to be edited(each file is a link when clicked it opens on edit mode).
writing in to a file.
saving to file.
part 2 and 3 I have completed using fopen and fwrite functions that wasn't too hard. the part that i need help is part one currently I open the file by inputing its location and file name like so in the php file where i have the display function and save function:
$relPath = 'file_to_edit.txt';
$fileHandle = fopen($relPath, 'r') or die("Failed to open file $relPath ! ");
but what i want is for the file to open in edit mode when clicked instead of typing in the files name every time.
$directory = 'folder_name';
if ($handle = opendir($directory. '/')){
echo 'Lookong inside \''.$directory.'\'<br><br>';
while ($file = readdir($handle)) {
if($file !='.' && $file!='..'){
echo '<a href="'.$directory.'/'.$file.'">'.$file.'<a><br>';
}
}
}
this is the code that ti use to display the list of files that are in a specified folder.
Can anyone give me some pointers how I can achieve this ? any help will be greatly appreciated.
To get content of file use file_get_contents();
To put content of file use file_put_contents(); with FILE_APPEND flag for editing.
To recieve list of files in directory you can use DirectoryIterator
Example:
foreach (new DirectoryIterator('PATH/') as $fileInfo) {
if($fileInfo->isDot()) continue;
echo $fileInfo->getFilename() . "<br>\n";
}
If you don't want to put filenames you can put read files once put in db assign ids to them and use links with id param. The other solution is to store files in session array and assign keys for them. When you want to get a file you just need to provide key instead of whole filename and path.
Example with $_SESSION
$file_arr = array();
foreach (new DirectoryIterator('PATH/') as $fileInfo) {
if($fileInfo->isDot()) continue;
$file_arr[] = array("path" => $fileInfo->getPathname(), 'name' => $fileInfo->getFilename());
}
$_SESSION['files'] = $file_arr;
then in view you can use
foreach($_SESSION['files'] as $k=>$file)
{
echo "<a href='edit.php?f=".$k."'>'.$file['name'].'</a>";
}
and edit.php
$file = (int)$_GET['f'];
if(array_key_exits($file, $_SESSION['files'])
{
$fileInfo = $_SESSION[$file'];
//in file info you have now $fileInfo['path'] $fileInfo['name']
}
(Well what I gone through a lot of posts here on stackoverflow and other sites. I need a simple task, )
I want to provide my user facility to click on upload file from his account, then select a directory and get the list of all the files names inside that directory.
According to the posts here what I got is I have to pre-define the directory name, which I want to avoid.
Is there a simple way to click a directory and get all the files names in an array in PHP? many thanks in advance!
$dir = isset($_POST['uploadFile']) ? _SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/'.$_POST['uploadFile'] : null;
if ($_POST['uploadFile'] == true)
{
foreach (glob($dir."/*.mp3") as $filename) {
echo $filename;
}
}
I will go ahead and post a sample of code I am currently using, with a few changes, although I would normally tell you to look it up on google and try it first.
if ($handle = opendir($dir)) {
while (false !== ($file = readdir($handle))) {
echo $file;
}
closedir($handle);
}
This will display the entire contents of a directory... including: ".", "..", any sub-directories, and any hidden files. I am sure you can figure out a way to hide those if it is not desirable.
<?php
$files=glob("somefolder/*.*");
print_r($files);
?>
Take a look at the Directory class (here) and readdir()
I'm confused what do you want, all files or only some files?
But if you want array of folders and files, do this
$folders = array();
$files = array();
$dir = opendir("path");
for($i=0;false !== ($file = readdir($dir));$i++){
if($file != "." and $file != ".."){
if(is_file($file)
$files[] = $file;
else
$folders[] = $file;
}
}
And if only some folders you want, later you can delete them from array
I always use this amazing code to get file lists:
$THE_PATTERN=$_SERVER["DOCUMENT_ROOT"]."/foldername/*.jpg";
$TheFilesList = #glob($THE_PATTERN);
$TheFilesTotal = #count($TheFilesList);
$TheFilesTotal = $TheFilesTotal - 1;
$TheFileTemp = "";
for ($TheFilex=0; $TheFilex<=$TheFilesTotal; $TheFilex++)
{
$TheFileTemp = $TheFilesList[$TheFilex];
echo $TheFileTemp . "<br>"; // here you can get full address of files (one by one)
}
I'm trying to create an Intranet page that looks up all pdf documents in a UNC path and the returns them in a list as hyperlinks that opens in a new window. I'm nearly there however the following code displays the FULL UNC path - My question how can I display only the Filename (preferably without the .pdf extension too). I've experimented with the basename function but can't seem to get the right result.
//path to Network Share
$uncpath = "//myserver/adirectory/personnel/";
//get all files with a .pdf extension.
$files = glob($uncpath . "*.pdf");
//print each file name
foreach ($files as $file)
{
echo "<a target=_blank href='File:///$file'>$file</a><br>";
}
The links work fine it just the display text shows //myserver/adirectory/personnel/document.pdf rather than just document. Note the above code was taken from another example I found whilst researching. If there's a whole new better way then I'm open to suggestions.
echo basename($file);
http://php.net/basename
Modify your code like this:
<?
$uncpath = "//myserver/adirectory/personnel/";
//get all files with a .pdf extension.
$files = glob($uncpath . "*.pdf");
//print each file name
foreach ($files as $file)
{
echo "<a target=_blank href='File:///$file'>".basename($file)."</a><br>";
}
?>
You may try this, if basename() does not work for some reason:
$file_a = explode('/',$file);
if (trim(end($file_a)) == '')
$filename = $file_a[count($file_a)-2];
else
$filename = end($file_a);
I want to move all files from one folder to other. my code is as following. in this I made a folder in which i want to copy all file from templats folder
$doit = str_replace(" ", "", $slt['user_compeny_name']);
mkdir("$doit");
$source = "templat/";
$target = $doit . "/";
$dir = opendir($source);
while (($file = readdir($dir)) !== false) {
copy($source . $file, $target . $file);
}
It working fine . copy all files but give warning that The first argument to copy() function cannot be a directory
can any one help me asap
Readdir will read all children in a directory, including other dirs, and 'virtual' dirs like . and .. (link to root and parent dir, resp.) You'll have to check for these and prevent the copy() function for these instances.
while (($file = readdir($dir)) !== false)
{
if(!is_dir($file))
{
copy($source.$file, $target.$file);
}
}
You are not accounting for the . and the .. files at the top of the directory. This means that the first thing it tries to copy is "\template." which would be the same as trying to copy the directory.
Just add something like:
if ($file !== "." && $file !== "..")
...
opendir() will include items . and .. as per the documentation.
You will need to exclude these by using the code in the other comments.
if ($file != "." && $file != "..") {
// copy
}
I know, this question is pretty old, but also are the answers. I feel the need to show some new methods, which can be used to execute the requested task.
In the mean time Objects were introduced with a lot more features and possibilities. Needless to say, the other answers will still work aswell.
But here we go, using the DirectoryIterator:
$szSrcFolder = 'source_folder';
$szTgtFolder = 'target_folder';
foreach (new DirectoryIterator($szSrcFolder) as $oInfo)
if ($oInfo->isFile())
copy($oInfo->getPathname(), $szTgtFolder . DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR . $oInfo->getBasename());
Remember, within this script, all paths are relative to the working directory of the script itself.
I think it is self explaining, but we will take a look. This few lines will iterate over the whole content of the source folder and check if it is a file and will copy it to the target folder, keeping the original file name.
