Show database entries after pressing submit button - php

I have a page where I search for the books that an author wrote (really basic search based on an assignment I had 2 months ago). I choose the author from a dropdown box and after I press the "Submit" button the results should appear.
Here is the page's code:
<?php
include ("includes/connections.php");
if($_POST)
{
if (!isset($_POST["authors"])){
header("Location: searchAuthor.php");
exit;
}
foreach ($_POST["authors"] as $author)
{
?????????
}
}
?>
<?php include ("includes/connections.php");
function dropdown($intIdField, $strfNameField, $strlNameField, $strTableName, $strOrderField, $strNameOrdinal, $strMethod="asc") {
echo "<select name=\"{$strNameOrdinal}[]\">\n";
echo "<option value=\"NULL\">Select Value</option>\n";
$strQuery = "SELECT $intIdField, $strfNameField, $strlNameField
FROM $strTableName
ORDER BY $strOrderField $strMethod";
$rsrcResult = mysql_query($strQuery) or die(mysql_error());
while($arrayRow = mysql_fetch_assoc($rsrcResult)) {
$strA = $arrayRow["$intIdField"];
$strB = $arrayRow["$strlNameField"] . " " . $arrayRow["$strfNameField"];
echo "<option value=\"$strA\">$strB</option>\n";
}
echo "</select>";
}
?>

As you can see I have everything inside a table (convenient for small stuff like this). I want when I press the submit button, the author that was chosen to be inputed in a method which will display the results from the query. The query will be executed in the foreach where the ?????? are. Then I want the result of the query to be used to display inside my table (by adding more rows and inserting one result in each row through a php function) the results.
Is there a way to do that just with php? I don't know how to use Javascript just php and html. Even if I have to insert the result of the query in another page and display everything there I'm ok with that.
I haven't written the query just yet.
Actually the foreach is there to put in a single variable each book the author has written.

Here's an example. Queries/fields are bogus.
<?php
if (isset($_POST['Submit'])) {
$strQuery = "SELECT 'field1', 'field2', 'field3'
FROM $strTableName
ORDER BY $strOrderField $strMethod";
$rsrcResult = mysql_query($strQuery) or die(mysql_error());
?>
<table>
<td> HEADER 1 </td> <td> HEADER 2 </td> <td> HEADER 3 </td>
<?php
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($rsrcResult) {
echo "<tr><td>".$row['field1']."</td><td>".$row['field2']."</td><td>".$row['field3']."</td>";
}
?>
</table>

Can't seem to add simple user input to my DB via a form

This is very quick.
I have a form that when submitted should add user input into my DB. I have had a similar form working well but for some reason this one is not working.
Please excuse my sloppy code but here is the whole page. For some reason 'observation' will not take the user input and display it on the next page (showOne.php). The next page simply shows a blank space for observation and I checked the DB and there was nothing in the observation field of course.
Is it something simple that I can't see? I've been at this for days since it is identical to another form I have that works well on another page.
Thank you for any insight.
<?php
//including the database connection file
include("config.php");
$activePage = "start.php";

I think that you're saying the once the course is selected it shouldn't be displayed on the next page where the student can have a look on the other courses?
If is so then you can use following sql query on the next page where you don't want to display the student's completed course.
SELECT * FROM course WHERE id != $course_id
Let me know if I'm wrong. I didn't comment out as my reputations were low and stackoverflow didn't allow me to.
[EDITED]
This is your complete code.
Your select php file:
//assuming that you are logging in the students with their username or email id, if so then store their username in a session where logging in.
<?php
$user = $_SESSION['username'];
include("includes/connect.php");
if (isset($_POST['submit'])){
$course_id= $_POST['course_id'];
$course_title= $_POST['course_title'];
$course_credits= $_POST['course_credits'];
$course_status= $_POST['course_status'];
$query="SELECT course.id,course.title,course.credits,course.status FROM course WHERE course.username = $user";
$run=mysqli_query($conn,$query);
while($row=mysqli_fetch_array($run)){
$course_id= $_SESSION['course_id'] = $row['course_id'];
$course_title=$row['course_title'];
$course_credits=$row['course_credits'];
$course_status=$row['course_status'];
}
?>
Now in your next php file :
$already_selected_course = $_SESSION['course_id'];
Now the query should look like.
$query = "SELECT course.id,course.title,course.credits,course.status FROM course WHERE course.id != $already_selected_course";
This is it. Note: This solution might contain some errors of brackets etc but the logic is clear.

trying to print database in a web page but can't get a counter for table

I am trying to create a page that displays rpg ranks from a mysql database on a webpage
i went into the database and organized the data by level, so the person with the highest level is shown first and so on, however the database does not contain a table for ranks
I am trying to do that manually in dreamweaver but I don't know how, can I create a counter and have it display in the table?
I managed to get the following:
http://slayersgaming.com/rpgranks2.php
<?php
$dbh=mysql_connect("********", "**********", "*********") or die('Cannot connect to the database because: '. mysql_error());
mysql_select_db("C368969_thcrpgCSGO");
$rpgranks_sql = "SELECT * FROM `thc_rpg` ORDER BY `thc_rpg`.`level` DESC LIMIT 0, 30 ";
$rpgranks_query = mysql_query($rpgranks_sql) or die(mysql_error());
$rsrpgranks = mysql_fetch_assoc($rpgranks_query);
?>

This is actually really easy to do. You just need a counter in your do-while loop like this:
<?php
$counter = 1;
do{
?>
<table width="501" height="58" border="0">
<tr>
<td><?php echo $counter; ?></td>
<td width="240"><?php echo $rsrpgranks['name'];?></td>
<td width="70"><?php echo $rsrpgranks['level'];?></td>
<td width="70"><?php echo $rsrpgranks['xp'];?></td>
<td width="70"><?php echo $rsrpgranks['credits'];?></td>
<td width="70"> </td>
</tr>
</table>
<?php
$counter++;
} while ($rsrpgranks = mysql_fetch_assoc($rpgranks_query))
?>

<td valign="top"><p><?php echo $dynamicList;?><br />
</p>
<p> </p>
<p> </p> <h2> </h2></td>
</tr>
</table>
<p> </p>
<?php include_once("template_footer.php");?>
</div>
</body>
</html>
EDIT: $dynamicList is nested in a condition statement. Just write
$dynamicList = '';
before your query
What is the current output on the page? Are the # of rows returned in the query = 0?
You should also sanitize your $category input using mysql_real_escape_string()
WHERE category ='".mysql_real_escape_string($category)."' ...
You must sanitize first the strings using this function:
public static function real_escape($string)
{
if (null != $string) {
$string = (get_magic_quotes_gpc()) ? $string : addslashes($string);
return mysql_real_escape_string($string);
}
return $string;
}
Or better use third party script like phpDataMapper
$sql = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM products WHERE category='$category' LIMIT 6");
should be
$sql = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM products WHERE category='".$category."' LIMIT 6");
This is the only error I can discover for now
