Cannot access elements within an array - php

I am trying to access elements within an associative array. However, I do not seem to be able to get to the elements. If I use print_r() it says that is IS an array and shows me what is contained within it. However, is_array() returns false. Furthermore, when I echo the first element in the array it returns a value of 'a' rather than the actual array value. This is probably just some stupid mistake, but it is baffling me. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is here?
Thanks in advance for the help.
$sc2 = new ServiceCall($uri,null,false,false);
$sc2->makeCall();
$response = json_decode($sc2->getResponse(),true);
$tmp4 = var_export($response, true);
print_r($tmp4);
if(is_array($tmp4))
echo "Tmp4 is an array";
else
echo "Tmp4 is NOT an array";

var_export() is meant for persisting variables e.g. to files, thus it returns a string.
You can just use $response as your array, not $tmp4.

PHP: Getting associative array returns null, despite existing in var_dump

I have an array of 'servers' that I'm storing in a JSON file.
The JSON file looks like this:
{"1":{"available":1,"players":0,"maxplayers":4}}
I retrieve this value with this:
$servers = (array) json_decode(file_get_contents("activeservers.json"));
However, when I try to access the array with $server = $servers[$id], $server is null. I noticed that the key is in quotes, so I also tried casting $id to a string, and surrounding it with quotes (") which didn't work.
Something to note, is that this code is returning "NULL":
foreach(array_keys($servers) as $key){
var_dump($servers[$key]);
}
Your code is wrong. Also you don't need to type cast when doing a json_decode, you can instead set the second parameter to true more info here.
Also you don't need to use the array_keys function in your foreach loop,
try this.
$json = '{"1":{"available":1,"players":0,"maxplayers":4}}';
$servers = json_decode($json, true);
foreach($servers as $key => $value) {
print $value["available"];
}
Do a print_r($value) to get all the array keys available to use. Also you could take advantage of the $key variable to print out the array key of the parent array.
Thanks, #Rizier123 (who solved the question).
Apparently passing TRUE as the second parameter to my json_decode function fixes the issue.
After checking the PHP documentation for json_decode() (PHP: json_decode), it seems that passing this parameter means that the resulting decoded array is automatically converted into an associative array (and this is recurring, meaning that this automatically happens for sub-arrays).
Edit: #Rizier123 also says that "you might want to read: stackoverflow.com/a/10333200 to understand a bit better why it is so "weird" and your method didn't work properly."

Return Array Element without Creating Variable

I feel stupid for asking this cause it seems so basic but it's really bugging me.
I have a method that returns an array with a single element. I just want it to return the element not wrapped in an array. I tried this.
return $f->getValue()[0];
and it gives an error but if I save it to a variable, it works fine.
$v = $f->getValue();
return $v[0];
I can't figure it out....
It's available only since PHP 5.4: http://codepad.viper-7.com/VHOW0o
What you are trying to do, is called array dereferencing, and is only possible in PHP as of version 5.4 (if you scroll up a few lines in the documentation article I linked to, you'll see it mentioned).
Use reset().
<?php return reset( $f->getValue() ); ?>
Edit: reset() is probably superior to current() as it also makes sure that the internal pointer is reset, despite it not making much difference if the array only contains one element.
As far as I know since you are returning an array you only can get an array. You can instead save the array to a variable in the class (accessible by $f->myArray) and then return just the string portion. Or the other option is to do what your second example is and return the array and retrieve the string from it.
have you tried this
<?php
return array_shift(array_values($array));
?>

print_r Return Value Incorrect

I am having a little trouble with the print_r function. Undoubtedly something I am misunderstanding in its operation... Basically, I have an array of objects in a class like so:
public $fields = array();
Assigned like so:
$oField = new Field();
/* property assignments to $oField omitted for brevity */
$this->fields[$i] = $oField;
Now in the primary class, I am attempting to capture debug information:
$this->debuginfo = print_r($this->fields, true);
When outputting the value of $this->debuginfo, it simply says "Array" - basically not exploding the array. If I do a regular print_r($this->fields);, it gives the expected results.
This is my first time attempting to use print_r with it returning results versus outputting to the screen so I am sure I am just missing something, but in reading the php documentation, this is how it would seem to be implemented. What am I missing?
Thanks for any assistance!
Update:
print_r($var, true) does indeed return the "exploded" variable properly as I had it written. Thanks to dev-null for their comment which gave me some food for thought that lead me to my problem.
Try var_export() instead. var_export() gets structured information about the given variable.
example:
$this->debuginfo = var_export($this->fields, true);

Variable in $_POST returns as string instead of array

In my form i have fields with name photoid[] so that when sent they will automatically be in an array when php accesses them.
The script has been working fine for quite some time until a couple days ago. And as far as i can remember i havent changed any php settings in the ini file and havent changed the script at all.
when i try to retrieve the array using $_POST['photoid'] it returns a string with the contents 'ARRAY', but if i access it using $_REQUEST['photoid'] it returns it correctly as an array. Is there some php setting that would make this occur? As i said i dont remember changing any php settings lately to cause this but i might be mistaken, or is there something else i am missing.
I had the same problem. When I should recieve array via $_POST, but var_dump sad: 'string(5) "Array"'. I found this happens, when you try use trim() on that array!
Double check your code, be sure you're not doing anything else with $_POST!
Raise your error_reporting level to find any potential source. It's most likely that you are just using it wrong in your code. But it's also possible that your $_POST array was mangled, but $_REQUEST left untouched.
// for example an escaping feature like this might bork it
$_POST = array_map("htmlentities", $_POST);
// your case looks like "strtoupper" even
To determine if your $_POST array really just contains a string where you expected an array, execute following at the beginning of your script:
var_dump($_POST);
And following for a comparison:
var_dump(array_diff($_REQUEST, $_POST));
Then verifiy that you are really using foreach on both arrays:
foreach ($_POST["photoid"] as $id) { print $id; }
If you use an array in a string context then you'll get "Array". Use it in an array context instead.
$arr = Array('foo', 42);
echo $arr."\n";
echo $arr[0]."\n";

Array
foo
$_POST['photoid'] is still an array. Just assign it to a variable, and then treat it like an array. ie: $array = $_POST['photoid'];
echo $array[0];

php array or not array?

I don't understand... I'm doing something and when I do print_r($var); it tells me that I have an array, so naturally I think I have an array yet when I do
if(is_array($xml->searchResult->item))
it returns false
I use this array with foreach(); in documentation it says that foreach() won't work with anything else but array, so assuming that this is an array that I'm working...
plus, if I try to access it via
echo $xml->searchResult->item[3];
i will get 4th element of my array
print_r will also print objects as though they are arrays.
well, is_array() returns true if your variable is an array, otherwise, it returns false. In your case, $xml->searchResult->item seems not to be an array. What is the output for
var_dump($xml->searchResult->item)
? Another hint: You can determine the type of a variable via gettype().
is_array() returns true only for real php arrays. It is possible to create a "fake" array by using the ArrayAccess class. That is, you can use normal array semantics (such as item[3]) but it is not a real array. I suspect your $item is an object. So use
if($x instanceof ArrayAccess || is_array($x))
Instead.
plus, if I try to access it via echo $xml->searchResult->item[3]; i will get 4th element of my array
That's right, the first element is always 0 unless you specifically change it.
The manual does mention that foreach works on objects as well, and it will iterate over properties.
In your case, the situation is slightly different because I guess you're using SimpleXML, which is yet another special case. SimpleXMLElement has its own iterator, which I assume is hardcoded as it doesn't seem to implement any of SPL's Iterator interfaces.
Long story short, some objects can be used as an array, but they are not one.
Just be careful to check what has been returned by your array. You might have an object with class or stdClass which is empty and you cannot get element from it.
