preg_replace limit issue, handling array values - php

I've been working with the Sphider search engine for an internal website, we need to be able to quickly search for contact details in exported .htm(l) files.
$fulltxt = ereg_replace("[_A-Za-z0-9-]+(\.[_A-Za-z0-9-]+)*#[A-Za-z0-9-]+(\.[A-Za-z0-9-]+)*(\.[A-Za-z]{2,3})", "\\0", $fulltxt);
I am replacing e-mail addresses with a convenient mailto: link so users can open Outlook straight from the search results.
However,
while (preg_match("/[^\>](".$change.")[^\<]/i", " ".$fulltxt." ", $regs)) {
$fulltxt = preg_replace("/".$regs[1]."/i", "<b>".$regs[1]."</b>", $fulltxt);
}
It replaces all matches in the search results with bold tags, which resuts into the tags been included in Outlook's 'To...' field. It looks something like this in HTML (thanks Yuriy):
<b>name</b>.surname#domain
I have tried adding a value to the 'limit' parameter:
while (preg_match("/[^\>](".$change.")[^\<]/i", " ".$fulltxt." ", $regs)) {
$fulltxt = preg_replace("/".$regs[1]."/i", "<b>".$regs[1]."</b>", $fulltxt, 1);
}
Supposingly this should be the solution to my problem by simply replacing only the first occurrence (being the name as the pattern is name-phone num-email and we always search by name), instead it only makes it incredibly slow to the point i get a timeout message from the server. I've been trying various solutions but have been out of luck.
Any ideas? Am i doing something wrong?
Thanks.
(*Original heavily edited).

Did I understand you right that something like this happens?
<b>email#domain</b>
Why don't you put tags into search results first, and only then apply "mailto:" anchors to emails? Added 's would be easy to filter out in the patter on that second step.

Convert Plain Text Address to clickable link to google maps via PHP

Pulling in data from a Filemaker Pro database field and trying to convert the plain text data from the field into a clickable link to google maps via PHP.
My first attempt doesnt display anything when called:
$Venue = ;
$Venue is then echoed into a UL via
<?php echo $Venue; ?>
I'm relatively new to PHP so I'm sure there is a much more semantic way of marking this up? Possibly a regex and replace, returning a preg_replace? Which is what I've been using for plain text URLs and email addresses.
Anything helps, thanks so much.
Casey - not sure there's enough context here to help you? For instance, forget the link wrapping, does
<?php echo $record->getField( 'Auctions::AIS_Venue'); ?>
actually echo the field contents to a page?
Also, not sure you really want to use nl2br anyway, as you probably don't want a break in your url ;-)
OK, in which case there are a couple of things to try. First - can you get it to run in a webviewer inside FileMaker? I suspect not, and it may be down to an encoding/filtering issue.
There are two approaches you could use.
Create a new calc field in FileMaker that filters out punctuation and converts spaces to '+'s, something like:
Filter( Substitute( Lower( Auctions::AIS_Venue ) ; [ ¶ ; "+"] ; [" " ; "+"]; ["++" ; "+"] ); "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1234567890+" )
and then use that field as in your PHP code, or;
Do the same calculation on the fly in PHP, something like:
$Venue = ;
That should do the trick ? ;-)

PHP preg_replace markdown issue - detecting duplicates

In a project I am building I would like to use markdown as follows
*text* = <em>text</em>
**text** = <strong>text</strong>
***text*** = <strong><em>text</em><strong>
As those are the only three markdown formats I require, I would like to remain lightweight and avoid importing the entire PHP markdown library as that would introduce features I do not require and create issues.
So I have been trying to build some simple regex replaces. Using preg_replace I run:
'/(\*\*\*)(.*?)\1/' to '<strong><em>\2</em></strong>'
'/(\*\*)(.*?)\1/' to '<strong>\2</strong>'
'/(\*)(.*?)\1/' to '<em>\2</em>',
And this works great! em, bold, and the combo all work fine...
But if the user makes a mistake or enters to many stars, everything breaks.
i.e.
****hello**** = <strong><em><em>hello</em></strong></em>
*****hello***** = <strong><em><strong>hello</em></strong></strong>
******hello****** = <strong><em></em></strong>hello<strong><em></em></strong>
etc
When ideally it would create
****hello**** = *<strong><em>hello</em></strong>*
*****hello***** = **<strong><em>hello</em></strong>**
******hello****** = ***<strong><em>hello</em></strong>***
etc
Ignoring the un-required stars (so it would become clear to the user they made a mistake, and more importantly, the rendered HTML remains valid).
I presume there must be some way to modify my regex to do this but I cannot for the life of my work it out, even after a whole day trying!
I would also be happy with the result of
******hello****** = <strong><em>hello</em></strong>
So please, can anybody help me?
Also please consider uneven stars. In this case the below scenario would be ideal.
***hello* = **<em>hello</em>
And the time when a star should be part of the body and not detected, such as if a user inputs:
'terms and conditions may apply*'
or
'I give the film 5* out of 10'
Many many thanks
Try different capturing pattern (match anything except * one or more times),
'/(\*\*\*)([^*]+)\1/'

Searching for a link in a website and displaying it PHP

hello im a newbie in php i am trying make a search function using php but only inside the website without any database
basically if i want to search a string namely "Health" it would display the lines
The Joys of Health
Healthy Diets
This snippet is the only thing i could find if properly coded would output the "lines" i want
$myPage = array("directory.php","pages.php");
$lines = file($myPage[n]);
echo $lines[n];
i havent tried it yet if it would work but before i do i want to ask if there is any better way to do this?
if my files have too many lines wont it stress out the server?
The file() function will return an array. You should use file_get_contents() instead, as it returns a string.
Then, use regular expressions to find specific text within a link.
Your goal is fine but the method you're thinking about is not. the file() function read a file, line by line, and inserts it into an array. This assumes the HTML is well-structured in a human-readable fashion, which is not always the case. However, if you're the one providing the HTML and you make sure the structure is perfectly defined, ok... here you have the example you provided us with but complete (take into account it's the 'wrong' way of solving your problem, but if you want to follow that pattern, it's ok):
function pagesearch($pages, $string) {
if (!empty($pages) && !empty($string)) {
$tags = [];
foreach ($pages as $page) {
if ($lines = file($page)) {
foreach ($lines as $line) {
if (!empty($line)) {
if (mb_strpos($line, $string)) {
$tags[$page][] = $line;
}
}
}
}
}
return $tags;
}
}
This will return you an array with all the pages you referenced with all occurrences of the word you look for, separated by page. As I said, it's not the way you want to solve this, but it's a way.
Hope that helps
Because you do not want to use any database and because the term database is very broad and includes the file-system you want to do a search in some database without having a database.
That makes no sense. In your case one database at least is the file-system. If you can accept the fact that you want to search a database (here your html files) but you do not want to use a database to store anything related to the search (e.g. some index or cached results), then what you suggest is basically how it is working: A real-time, text-based, line-by-line file-search.
Sure it is very rudimentary but as your constraint is "no database", you have already found the only possible way. And yes it will stress your server when used because real-time search is expensive.
Otherwise normally Lucene/Solr is used for the job but that is a database and a server even.

How to get Wikipedia "clean" content?

I'm using Mediawiki api in order to get content from Wikipedia pages.
I've written a code which generates the next query (for example):
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&rvprop=content&rvsection=0&titles=hawaii
Which retrieves only the leading paragraph from the Wikipdia page about Hawaii.
The problem is that as you might notice there are a lot of irrelevant substrings such as:
"Molokaokinai, Lānaokinai, Kahookinaolawe, Maui and the [[Hawaii (island)|".
All those barckets [[]] are not relevant , and I wonder whether there is an alegant method to pull only 'clean' content from such pages?
Thanks in advance.
You can get a clean HTML text from Wikipedia with this query:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=extracts&titles=hawaii
If you want just a plain text, without HTML, try this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=extracts&titles=hawaii&explaintext
please try this:
$relevant = preg_replace('/.*?/', , $string);
EDIT: just found this - hope it is helpful

Extract keywords from referrer URL

It seems Google's URLs are structured differently these days. So it is harder to extract the referring keyword from them. Here is an example:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=jquery+post+output+46&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#pq=jquery+post+output+46&hl=en&cp=30&gs_id=1v&xhr=t&q=jquery+post+output+php+not+running&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&client=firefox-a&hs=8N5&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&source=hp&pbx=1&oq=jquery+post+output+php+not+run&aq=0w&aqi=q-w1&aql=&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=bdeb326aa44b07c5&biw=1280&bih=875
The search I performed was actually "jquery post output php not running", so the first 'q=' does not contain the full search. The second one does. I'd like to write a script that always extracts the last 'q=', but I'm not sure if Google's URL's always have the full search last. Anyone had any experience with this.
You can accomplish this using parse_url(), parse_str(), and urldecode(), where $str is the refer string:
$fragment = parse_url($str, PHP_URL_FRAGMENT);
parse_str($fragment, $arr);
$query = urldecode($arr['q']); // jquery post output php not running
