I am trying to create a PHP trigger for when a user views certain pages on my website it will update the user table in the points section.
I understand the process would work something like this
on page view > update user > where user id is (**get username from session**) > add 5 to points row
Anyone have any idea how to set up something simple like this for giving users simple points for viewing pages?
My site is using PHP and mySQL for the database.
Use cookies or session variables to keep track of the user details like the username or ID. So making a pageview trigger would be as easy as adding a mysql query at the top of every page which would update the database table for views. Kinda the same way that forums operate.
E.g
<?php
session_start();
$db_connection = mysqli_connect('host','username','password','db');
$user_id = $_SESSION['userid']; //That is asssuming that you had gotten the user id on login
mysqli_query($db_connection, 'UPDATE page_views SET views_column=views_column+1 WHERE userid=$user_id');
?>
Yes, you could do something like (if you own the page the user has to visit):
<?php
$pointsForThisSite = 5;
include "points_adder.php";
?>
While Points_adder looks whether $pointsForThisSite is defined and > 0, then adds the Points to the database as you descripbed.
Is that what you are looking for?
Create a php function and call it everytime the user enter the page.
You don't need a mysql trigger because, the action is at the webpage.
function add_points($user, $page){
//If users visits too many maybe you don't want to gave him some points.
//add points
}
and invoke the function in that pages you want to score
The most unobtrusive way to do this is with an AJAX call after the page has loaded. The call should be to an include file that performs the database update operation and returns a 204 response so that the visitor's browser doesn't wait for response content.
For an Apache server;
header('HTTP/1.0 204 No Content');
header('Content-Length: 0', true);
header('Content-Type: text/html', true);
flush();
// do the table update here

I have a index.html file consist of certain data with refresh button.
On pressing refresh button it will call refresh.php.
Refresh.php connects database and gets new updated data from database (Say- today's event data) And shows updated data in that refresh.php page
this is what I do.. But I want dynamic home page and want to remove refresh button. In short- whenever user loads homepage..that division should display updated data from database. So should I use .index.php and use php code in index.php itself will work?
I dont want to use asp/ajax/cookie/session. Please give me idea apart from these. Thanks :)
You could check the file's age, e.g.
<?php
$ca_file = '/path/to/foo.blah';
if (is_file($ca_file)) {
// check if file is not older then 1 hour
if (time() - filemtime($ca_file) <1 * 3600) {
$ca_news = 'y';
}
}
That would check if the file is not older then 1 hour. You'll probably want something smaller. Now all you need to do is to check the value of $ca_news and do your magic.
I need my visitors on homepage to see how many active user we have. I need to include this with php. (need the code)
in mysql database user is marked with 0 (inactive) and 1 (active).
How can I count/read out the outcome, means all active users, of the database(database_name) - table(user_registration) - colums(each_one) - count(status)?
How to publish this on my website?
Would prefer to this in php cause i'm not so used to js and query.
A simple methode/explanation would be very nice.
Thank you.
(need the code) first this is not a script writing service. Come up with some try and we will try giving a solution.
Basic necessity for your required active user count is to have a status (or name it something) column in your user table.
Then, while a user logs in change the status from 0 to 1 while logs out change it from 1 to 0
by doing so you could easily query it to display the active user.
select column,column from table where status = 1
//(i.e)
select id,userName from users where status = 1
Try using ajax if you want to display it like on-line users displayed in fb
In our implementation, I created a separate DB table active_users, wrote a php function to write user_id and timestamp to this table. This function is called via ajax from your page, bind it to whatever user action you see fit (in our case it is a search).
Write another php function that queries the said tables and retrieves users with time difference between the timestamp and now less than specific value (in our case 5 min). call this function from your page via ajax either in specific time intervals (heartbeat) or user action again - mouse move etc. Display results of this call somewhere (in our case "Active Users" div)
this is what i have.
it works good, but it just shows the amount of lines within.
How can i count all numbers in 'status' within those lines?
<?php
$con = mysql_connect($dbHost, $dbUser, $dbPass );
mysql_select_db($dbName, $con);
$res = mysql_query('SELECT Count(*) FROM ' . 'user_registration', $con);
if ($row = mysql_fetch_array($res, MYSQL_NUM))
{
$users = trim($row[0]);
}
else
{
$users = 'Error';
}
?>
to Show result on website:
<?= $users ?>
Since I asked my question (Previous question) in a way no doubt most users think "dude this is tl;dr" let me put it more simple. I want to use post-redirect-get pattern to avoid user refreshing the site and resubmiting the data etc... I understand that in order to do so I have to redirect the user from html form, through php processing script and back to a new site (or original html form site) that displays the processed data.
Now my question. How do I GET my processed data back from my php? I don't understand the GET part... Currently I don't know how to show php generated data in a nice html display (view) page without include 'site.html';. This example isn't what I am looking for either: Simple Post-Redirect-Get code example. Code in the below example just redirects me to a current page.
It depends on context, but for example:
Given: invoice-form.html, invoice-processing.php and current-invoices.php:
User fills in data on invoice-form
User submits form which has action="invoice-processing.php"
Browser POSTs data to invoice-processing
invoice-processing takes the data from the form and puts it in a database
invoice-processing outputs 302 status and a Location header
Browser goes to current-invoices
current-invoices fetches a list of invoices (including the most recently submitted one) from the database and sends them to the browser as an HTML document
I hope this will help because it has taken me quite a while to get it as well. I tested my understanding like this. I have two php pages, the first page (prg1.php) sends the form to the database, action set to the second one (prg2.php). prg2.php checks the POST data, updates the database and issues a redirect to prg1.php with anything I need to pass back as GET variables. prg2.php looks like this
<?php
if (isset($_POST['gameid'])){
// process the data, update the database
$gameid = htmlspecialchars($_POST['gameid']);
$playerid = htmlspecialchars($_POST['playerid']);
$message = htmlspecialchars($_POST['message']);
//redirect, after updating the database
$getinfo = '?gameid=' . $gameid . '&playerid=' . $playerid;
header("Location: prg1.php" . $getinfo );
exit();
}
?>
You could try something like this:
/****************************************/
/* Fetch my data. */
/****************************************/
$mydata = $_GET["data"];
/****************************************/
/* Has to be sent before anything else! */
/****************************************/
header( 'Location: http://www.yoursite.com/index.php?data='.$mydata );
I have a database with just over 800 data.
product table
pid name p_page
1 money money.php
2 gold gold.php
3 .
. .
. .
800 .
I have 2 pages...
product_item.php
<div class="button">
View
</div>`
when you click view the product info is pass to product.php
in here i have
if (isset($_GET['pid'])) {
depending on what product the user clicked on the URL might look like something below but the 44 will change to whatever id
http://www.example.x10.mx/money.php?pid=44
the problem with this, is that money.php have a different layout to the other pages and if I change 44 to 68, the product info will show on the page but the layout will not look good.
My question
what is the best way for me to stop users from being able to change the url.
I want to encrypt all my pid in the url so it will look something like
http://www.example.x10.mx//money.php?sel=the product name here or 4 letters or anything
I just want to take away pid from the url.
Please help me. If you dont understand my question please ask in the comment and try and say what you think you understand.
Edited to show my fetch function
$php = "php/";
$apages = "account/";
$bpages = "booking/";
$gpages = "general/";
$ppages = "product/";
// Global functions
function fetchdir($dir)
{
$protocol = $GLOBALS['protocol'];
$host = $GLOBALS['host'];
($dir == $GLOBALS['apages'] || $dir == $GLOBALS['bpages'] || $dir == $GLOBALS['ppages'] || $dir == $GLOBALS['gpages'] ? $branch = $GLOBALS['pagebranch'] : $branch = $GLOBALS['branch']);
echo $protocol.$host.$branch.$dir;
}
Thanks
p.s. I dont know if this can be done in .htaccess but i think it can be done in php
Some clarification:
I have a url which looks like this
www.example.com/account/product.php?pid=1
the problem with this is that someone can change 1 or any number and if they is a pid in the database with that number it will get the items information and display on the page. Which I don't want to happen because not all product are meant to be display in some pages.
In the papge which i show all my available product. I simple uses a SELECT statement and then echo what I need in some div.
In that page I have a view button.
$stmt = $conn->prepare("SELECT * FROM Product WHERE Type = 'shoes'");
$stmt->execute();
$i = 0;
$rows = $stmt->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
foreach ($rows as $row) {
$id = ($row['pid']);
$product_page ($row['dir_page']);
<div class="button" >
<a href = "<?php fetchdir($apages) ?><?echo $product_page?ProdID=<?php echo $id>" > View</a >
</div >
}
Depending on the page that information is getting sent to when you click on view I use Get method
<?php
if (isset($_GET['pid'])) {
// Connect to the MySQL database
dbconnect();
$id = preg_replace('#[^0-9]#i', '', $_GET['pid']);
}
If you notice in my select statement used type to show only the product which type is shoes. I have other types as well, which as their other pages. Now the problem is if i change the pid to any page that doesn't have a type of shoes or if an in the other pages and enter a pid which type is shoes or anything, the information from that page will still render. Which I don't want to happen.
My question
how can i stop users from changing that pid and even if they change it. they will still be on the same page?
The problem isn't having the PID in the URL, it is having the template name in the URL.
Store the template name in the database (you are doing this already), and use that to determine what HTML to wrap the data in instead of putting it (money.php) in the URL.
Move your templates out of the web root (they shouldn't be hit by users directly), have a single index.php and then include() the template based on the data in the database.
You cannot prevent someone from changing the URL or from requesting arbitrary URLs. Your server (i.e. your app) has to decide how to respond to an invalid request. If you don't want to display certain things publicly, flag them as such in your database, test for that flag and simply refuse to output anything if that flag is hit.
Make the server respond negatively if something doesn't fit your conditions; don't expect the user to behave correctly.
Assuming that PID is a autoincrement value, you can still obfuscate it. Add another column in the table that contains a randomly-generated key (using uniqid or some derivative). Then use that key in your URL. You'll get something like: www.example.com/account/product.php?pid=II8GypI6H93Ij. This doesn't guarantee that someone won't find it, but it's good enough in most instances.
Check for allowance in the Database
Depending on your level of programming skills, in the database you could add a field or a relational table that relates the ID of the pages to allowed page templates (I'm guessing you're talking about templates.)
Then in the code you can make it so the page checks this database to see if the page contents are allowed to show. Something like:
$query1 = "SELECT * FROM Product WHERE Type = 'shoes' and allowedTemplate='1'";
This way you won't have to hardcode everything into the code itself. On the backend (if there is a CMS) then you could have checkboxes indicating the relationships to the templates and prefill them by default.
You'll need to make the site so something with that stuff though.
Your other option
You could use clean urls (which used to be better for SEO) to show real words instead of the IDs. Then you can use .htaccess tricks to convert the URIs to their ID counterparts with a dynamic RewriteMap.
I have a PHP page that uses jQuery to let a user update a particular item without needing to refresh the page. It is an availability update where they can change their availability for an event to Yes, No, or Maybe. Each time they click on the link the appropriate jQuery function is called to send data to a separate PHP file (update_avail.php) and the appropriate data is returned.
Yes
Then when clicked the params are sent to a PHP file which returns back:
No
Then, if clicked again the PHP will return:
Maybe
It all works fine and I'm loving it.
BUT--
I also have a total count at the bottom of the page that is PHP code to count the total number of users that have selected Yes as their availability by simply using:
<?php count($event1_accepted); ?>
How can I make it so that if a user changes their availability it will also update the count without needing to refresh the page?
My thoughts so far are:
$var = 1;
while ($var > 0) {
count($day1_accepted);
$var = 0;
exit;
}
Then add a line to my 'update_avail.php' (which gets sent data from the jQuery function) to make $var = 1
Any help would be great. I would like to stress that my main strength is PHP, not jQuery, so a PHP solution would be preferred, but if necessary I can tackle some simple jQuery.
Thanks!
In the response from update_avail.php return a JSON object with both your replacement html and your new counter value.
Or to keep it simple, if they click "yes" incriment the counter, if they click No or maybe and their previous action wasn't No or Maybe decrease the counter.
Assuming your users are logged into the system I'd recommend having a status field in the user table, perhaps as an enum with "offline", "available", "busy", "unavailable" or something similar and use the query the number of available users whilst updating the users status.
If you were to do this you'd need to include in extend your methods containing session)start() and session_destroy() to change the availability of the user to available / offline respectively
The best way is the one suggested by Scuzzy with some improvements.
In your php, get the count from the database and return a JSON object like:
{ count: 123, html: 'Yes' }
In your page, in the ajax response you get the values and update the elements:
...
success: function(data) {
$("#linkPlaceholder").html(data.html);
$("#countPlaceholder").html(data.count);
}
...
