PHP: name parameters when passing them to a method? - php

Some languages allow us to name parameters when passing them to methods, e.g.:
private static function hello(a, long, list = 0, of = 0, parameters = 0)
{
...
}
self::hello(a=1, long=2, list=3, of=4);
It certainly simplifies reading code in some cases. Is there a similar functionality in php?
The most simple construction that I could imagine is:
self::hello(/*a*/ 1, /*long*/ 2, /*list*/ 3, /*of*/ 4);

PHP does not provide such functionality but it can be faked to a large degree of realism. I just wrote this thing. Not 100% tested but if used correctly, it will work.
Example of how you use it:

It uses \ in front of classes as it's namespaced code intended for use with PHP 5.3 or later. Remove the \ to try to use it in 5.2, but no guarantees.

You could do

Other way, would be to use setters to set the values in object before You call hello.
Though in Your example it's a private method...

PHP - iterate through different value types

I have object of class $values like:

All array keys are returning boolean type value expect one, which returns string value.
My result with the code:

I am assuming that using in_array() PHP function would be the best approach here but I can't find a way to use it within my current method.

You should probably operate on the feature code FEATURE_FLAGS, rather than assuming that the last feature in the array always contains the flags. Using your existing code, that could be as simple as:

How to return an element of array, which finded by recursion?

So, i have a little trouble:
I have a class, let's name it "Menu", also, i have an array, which provides an elements for "Menu", it looks like that

Also, in "Menu" i have a function, which by recursion try to find an element of the $this->_data with specified value, function looks like that:

Since you only try to find one element, it should be enough to pass the return value up the recursion stack. E.g. like this:

The reason for the NULLs you get, must be, because PHP functions return NULL implicitly when the code does not reach a return statement.

Check type of optional parameter in PHP

I am checking the type of optional parameters in PHP like this:

This works but there are 2 main issues with this:
1/ If I need to check the type of 4/5 optional parameters for the same int type, the code become unnecessarily long. Any ideas how to make this piece of code more maintainable? (Maybe use only one if statement to check the same type of both $limit and $offset)
2/ getPlayers($team, 2, null) throws an exception. Is this ok knowing that the function can actually handle a null value here?
You could do a for loop with an array of args. Something like:
$args = func_get_args();
for ($i = 1; $i < 4; $i++) {

Of course, adjust the for conditions based on your number of arguments that need to be checked.
Or...
$args = func_get_args();

For 1) I would check each variable individually and throw an exception for each:
if (!is_int($limit)){

This still requires an if statement for each variable but is a bit less verbose.
For 2) if null values are allowed you can change the check to be something like:
if ($offset && !is_int($offset))){
//Throw
}
Finally I wouldn't recommend checking func_num_args(). In your example code calling your function with too many arguments would bypass the validation.
PHP doesn't have type hints for scalars yet.
Redesign
When you start to take a lot of optional arguments in your function you develop code smells. Something is wrong, there is an object waiting to emerge.
Build all of your optional parameters as an Object and have a validate method on it.
I think you want a GameParameters object and have a validate method on it.
getPlayers($gameParameters) {
}
Move your validation of the parameters to that object where you can build it into each setter or have a comprehensive validate() function.
Combinatorial problem
As far as the explosion of checks goes I would build an array of errors and throw that if there are errors. This can be done with or without redesign.

Personally I prefer to have only one argument per function (unless the function is very simple), For example the function can take $request, and returns a tree of data $response. It makes it a bit easier to loop over and extend later:

Then for validation, you can write a set of rules at the top of the function like

This might need optimization, but the general approach helps contain bloat as you increase the complexity of the functions.

Passing parameter to a function by parameter name? [duplicate]

Is it possible in PHP to specify a named optional parameter when calling a function/method, skipping the ones you don't want to specify (like in python)?
Something like:
function foo($a, $b = '', $c = '') {

foo("hello", $c="bar"); // we want $b as the default, but specify $c
No, it is not possible (before PHP 8.0): if you want to pass the third parameter, you have to pass the second one. And named parameters are not possible either.
A "solution" would be to use only one parameter, an array, and always pass it... But don't always define everything in it.
For instance :

And calling it this way : (Key / value array)

So I'd go with this only in very specific cases -- for functions with lots of optional parameters, for instance...
PHP 8 was released on November 26, 2020 with a new feature called named arguments.
In this major version release, "named parameters" (aka "named arguments") afford developers some really cool new techniques when calling native and custom functions.
The custom function in this question can now be called with the first parameter (because there is no default for it) and then only the third parameter passed by using named parameters like this: (Demo)

Notice that the second parameter did not need to be declared in the function call because it has a default value defined -- the default value is automatically used within the function body.
Part of the beauty of this new feature is that you don't need to be careful about the order of your named parameters -- the order of their declaration is irrelevant. foo(c: "bar", a: "hello"); works just the same. Having the ability to "skip" declarations and write declarative parameters will improve the readability of your scripts. The only downside of this new feature is that there will be a little bit more bloat in the function calls, but I (and many others) think the benefits outweigh this "cost".
Here is an example of a native function omitting the limit parameter, writing the parameters out of their normal order, and declaring a reference variable. (Demo)

If you have a function that takes a lot of arguments and all of them have default values you can consider making the function accept an array of arguments instead:

The only way you can somewhat do that is by using arrays with named keys and what not.
As of PHP 5.4 you have shorthand array syntax (not nessecary to specify arrays with cumbersome "array" and instead use "[]").
You can mimic named parameters in many ways, one good and simple way might be:
bar('one', ['a1' => 'two', 'bar' => 'three', 'foo' => 'four']);

You can keep the phpdoc and the ability to set defaults by passing an object instead of an array, e.g.

If I have to pass 10 arguments, and 3 of them are the data I really need, is NOT EVEN SMART to pass into the function something like
return myfunction(false,false,10,false,false,"date",false,false,false,"desc");
With the approach I'm giving, you can setup any of the 10 arguments into an array:

With PHP, the order of arguments is what matters. You can't specify a particular argument out of place, but instead, you can skip arguments by passing a NULL, as long as you don't mind the value in your function having a NULL value.

And skip with null.

Here's what I've been using. A function definition takes one optional array argument which specifies the optional named arguments:

You can normally call without any named arguments:

To specify an optional named argument, pass it in the optional array:

No not really. There are a few alternatives to it you could use.

Or pass an array:

If you need to call, for example, the substr function, that has 3 params, and want to set the $length without set the $start, you'll be forced to do so.

a nice way to override this is to always use arrays for parameters
In very short, sometimes yes, by using reflection and typed variables. However I think this is probably not what you are after.
A better solution to your problem is probably to pass in the 3 arguments as functions handle the missing one inside your function yourself

You can't do it the python way. Anway, you could pass an associative array and than use the array entries by their name:

This doesn't reduce the typing, but at least it's more descriptive, having the arguments' names visible and readable in the call.

Just use the associative array pattern Drupal uses. For optional defaulted arguments, just accept an $options argument which is an associative array. Then use the array + operator to set any missing keys in the array.

Does PHP allow named parameters so that optional arguments can be omitted from function calls?

Is it possible in PHP to specify a named optional parameter when calling a function/method, skipping the ones you don't want to specify (like in python)?
Something like:
function foo($a, $b = '', $c = '') {

No, it is not possible (before PHP 8.0): if you want to pass the third parameter, you have to pass the second one. And named parameters are not possible either.
A "solution" would be to use only one parameter, an array, and always pass it... But don't always define everything in it.
For instance :

And calling it this way : (Key / value array)

So I'd go with this only in very specific cases -- for functions with lots of optional parameters, for instance...
PHP 8 was released on November 26, 2020 with a new feature called named arguments.
In this major version release, "named parameters" (aka "named arguments") afford developers some really cool new techniques when calling native and custom functions.
The custom function in this question can now be called with the first parameter (because there is no default for it) and then only the third parameter passed by using named parameters like this: (Demo)

echo $a . '&' . $b . '&' . $c;

foo("hello", c: "bar");
// output: hello&&bar
Notice that the second parameter did not need to be declared in the function call because it has a default value defined -- the default value is automatically used within the function body.
Part of the beauty of this new feature is that you don't need to be careful about the order of your named parameters -- the order of their declaration is irrelevant. foo(c: "bar", a: "hello"); works just the same. Having the ability to "skip" declarations and write declarative parameters will improve the readability of your scripts. The only downside of this new feature is that there will be a little bit more bloat in the function calls, but I (and many others) think the benefits outweigh this "cost".
Here is an example of a native function omitting the limit parameter, writing the parameters out of their normal order, and declaring a reference variable. (Demo)

If you have a function that takes a lot of arguments and all of them have default values you can consider making the function accept an array of arguments instead:

The only way you can somewhat do that is by using arrays with named keys and what not.
As of PHP 5.4 you have shorthand array syntax (not nessecary to specify arrays with cumbersome "array" and instead use "[]").
You can mimic named parameters in many ways, one good and simple way might be:
bar('one', ['a1' => 'two', 'bar' => 'three', 'foo' => 'four']);
// output: twothreefour
function bar ($a1, $kwargs = ['bar' => null, 'foo' => null]) {

You can keep the phpdoc and the ability to set defaults by passing an object instead of an array, e.g.

That also lets you do strict type checking in your function call, if you want to:

Of course, you might pay for that with extra verbosity setting up the FooOptions object. There's no totally-free ride, unfortunately.

Normally you can't but I think there a lot of ways to pass named arguments to a PHP function. Personally I relay on the definition using arrays and just call what I need to pass:

If I have to pass 10 arguments, and 3 of them are the data I really need, is NOT EVEN SMART to pass into the function something like
return myfunction(false,false,10,false,false,"date",false,false,false,"desc");
With the approach I'm giving, you can setup any of the 10 arguments into an array:
$arr['count']=10;
$arr['type']="date";
$arr['order']="desc";
return myfunction($arr);

With PHP, the order of arguments is what matters. You can't specify a particular argument out of place, but instead, you can skip arguments by passing a NULL, as long as you don't mind the value in your function having a NULL value.

If you really really want, try the reflection.
And skip with null.

Here's what I've been using. A function definition takes one optional array argument which specifies the optional named arguments:

To specify an optional named argument, pass it in the optional array:

No not really. There are a few alternatives to it you could use.

Or pass an array:

a nice way to override this is to always use arrays for parameters
In very short, sometimes yes, by using reflection and typed variables. However I think this is probably not what you are after.
A better solution to your problem is probably to pass in the 3 arguments as functions handle the missing one inside your function yourself

You can't do it the python way. Anway, you could pass an associative array and than use the array entries by their name:

This doesn't reduce the typing, but at least it's more descriptive, having the arguments' names visible and readable in the call.
