I'm trying to set up a form so that it submits (without refreshing the page) when a selection is made from a dropdown menu. I currently have it set to submit when the dropdown is select, but it refreshes the page.
My code for the form is,
<form action="" method="get">
<select name="day" onchange="this.form.submit();">
<option>Please select a date</option>
<option value="Mon"><?php echo $monday; ?></option>
<option value="Tue"><?php echo $tuesday; ?></option>
<option value="Wed"><?php echo $wednesday; ?></option>
<option value="Thu"><?php echo $thursday; ?></option>
<option value="Fri"><?php echo $friday; ?></option>
</select>
</form>
I've tried several jquery tutorials on submitting forms without a refresh, but they all involve a submit button. I need one that binds the submitting of the form to when a choice is selected in the dropdown.
Any help would be much appreciated.
EDIT: Solved
Using some of the ideas from the answers here, some tutorials, and a lot of trial/error. I finally got it figure out. Here is the code that works
$('#day').change(function()
{
$.ajax({
type: 'post',
url: "tutoringlistsession.php",
data: $("form.day").serialize(),
success: function() {
$('#list').load('tutoringlist.php', function(){
});
$('#list').show("fast");
}
});
return false;
});
You need to bind to the form's submit event:
$("form").on('submit', function (e) {
//prevent form submission / page refresh
e.preventDefault();
//submit form with ajax
$.get(window.location, $(this).serialize());
});
I would also bind to the select with jQuery as well for cleanliness/consistency:
$("form select").on('change', function () {
$("form").trigger('submit');
});
I would also use more specific selectors, which requires updating your markup.
Submit form via ajax onChange of the select element:
$("select").on('change', function () {
var thisForm = $(this).closest('form');
$.get($thisForm.attr('action'), $thisForm.serialize());
});
I used the ideas posted in here and several tutorials to figure out the answer. The working code is below:
$('#day').change(function()
{
$.ajax({
type: 'post',
url: "tutoringlistsession.php",
data: $("form.day").serialize(),
success: function() {
$('#list').load('tutoringlist.php', function(){
});
$('#list').show("fast");
}
});
return false;
});

I have the following 3 checkboxes which are populated from a php database. I need assistance with JQUERY that once any select box is changed the value is posted to a php file and able to return a response through JQUERY.
Each select box should be standalone to only send that checkbox value & name to the PHP file.
I have the below JQUERY to start with to send the first checkbox but am getting no response back.
What amendments need to be made to the JQUERY to receive the input of the other checkboxes and then send the data correctly?
The php file will simply have echo "WHAT EVER THE RESPONSE IS" using if statements.
Any help grately appreciated with thanks.
$(document).ready(function() {
$('select.person-1').change(function() {
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: 'lib/positionMarshalProcess.php',
data: {
selectFieldValue: $('select.person-1').val(),
changeCol1: $('input[name$="changeCol1"]').val()
},
dataType: "html",
},
success: function(data) {
var a = data.split('|***|');
if (a[1] == "update") {
$('#msg').html(a[0]);
}
}
});
return false;
});
});
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<select name='person-1' class='marshal-select'>
<option value='1'>John Smith</option>
</select>
<input type='hidden' name='changeCol1' value='person-1'>
<select name='qty' class='marshal-select'>
<option value='1'>1</option>
</select>
<input type='hidden' name='changeCol2' value='qty'>
<select name='person-2' class='marshal-select'>
<option value='1'>John Smith</option>
</select>
<input type='hidden' name='changeCol3' value='person-2'>
The selectors you've used are incorrect for the HTML displayed. .person-1 is a class selector, yet the select elements have that value in their name.
In addition your success property is outside the options object of the $.ajax call - it needs to be inside.
You can fix this issue and DRY up the code to make it more extensible by removing the hidden fields, hooking the change event handler to the common marshal-select class on all the select elements, and by using the name attribute of the select elements to fill the changeCol property of the data you send in the AJAX request. Try this:
$(document).ready(function() {
$('select.marshal-select').change(function() {
let $select = $(this);
// in your AJAX request...
let data = {
selectFieldValue: $select.val(),
changeCol: $select.prop('name')
};
console.log(data);
});
});
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<select name="person-1" class="marshal-select">
<option value="1">John Smith</option>
<option value="2">Jane Doe</option>
</select>
<select name="qty" class="marshal-select">
<option value="1">1</option>
<option value="2">2</option>
</select>
<select name="person-2" class="marshal-select">
<option value="1">John Smith</option>
<option value="2">Jane Doe</option>
</select>
As an aside, the logic in the success handler implies that you're returning plain text and then hacking the string around using split(). Do not do this. Return a serialised data structure, such as JSON instead. This is more extensible and makes the code far more robust.
Update:
With your code you have added could you just add an edit where how you would receive a response ideally I want a positive response to show the msg div and where you would call the php file?
Sure, here you go:
$(document).ready(function() {
$('select.marshal-select').change(function() {
let $select = $(this);
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: 'lib/positionMarshalProcess.php',
data: {
selectFieldValue: $select.val(),
changeCol: $select.prop('name')
},
dataType: "html",
success: function(data) {
// assuming a JSON response:
if (data[1] === 'update') {
$('#msg').html(data[0]).show();
}
}
});
});
});
Note that I've not included the PHP which would generate the JSON response as I'm not a PHP dev. I'm sure there are lots of topics covering that if you search.
I have a dropdown in my form which I used to filter data. I am using ajax onchange function to filter the data based on the selected list.
My dropdown looked something like this :
<select id="opt_level" name="opt_level">
<option value="level1">Level 1</option>
<option value="level2">Level 2</option>
<option value="level3">Level 3</option>
</select>
And here is the div that I wanted to display the onchange data :
<div id="opt_lesson_list">
<!-- Some statement here -->
</div>
When there is onchange on dropdown, it will go through this ajax function :
jQuery(document).ready(function($) {
$("#opt_level").on('change', function() {
var level = $(this).val();
if(level){
$.ajax ({
type: 'POST',
url: 'example-domain.com',
data: { hps_level: '' + level + '' },
success : function(htmlresponse) {
$('#opt_lesson_list').html(htmlresponse);
console.log(htmlresponse);
}
});
}
});
});
And going to the url example-domain.com to check if there is post made from ajax :
if(isset($_POST['hps_level'])){
// Statement to select from database
}
So after filtering done, data inside the <div id="opt_lesson_list"></div> should display the filtered data. But what happened is, the ajax response to the whole page which means that my whole form is multiplying and displayed in the div that I used to display onchange data.
EDIT
My PHP is just filtering data from database based on the value selected :
if(isset($_POST['hps_level'])){
$sql = "SELECT DISTINCT(hps_lessons) FROM holiday_program_setup WHERE hps_level = '".$_POST['hps_level']."'";
$result = $conn->query($sql);
if ($result->num_rows > 0) {
while($row = $result->fetch_assoc()) {
echo '<ul class="list-unstyled subjects">';
echo '<li class="bordered" style="width: 30%;">';
echo $row['hps_lessons'];
echo '</li>';
echo '</ul>';
}
}
$sql = NULL;
}
If I echo $_POST['hps_level']; I can get the value of the dropdown selected.
my whole form is multiplying and displayed in the div that I used to
display onchange data.
It seems like you are pointing your ajax url example-domain.com to the page where all your html page is and the ajax returning the whole html page to your div response <div id="opt_lesson_list"></div>.
Try to create another blank php page and put your php isset code in the new php file.
if(isset($_POST['hps_level'])){
// Statement to select from database
}
Replace your ajax url with the new php file url. By doing that, your ajax will grab all the data from the new file and display in your response div.
your provide valid url,becz data filter to hps_level
jQuery(document).ready(function($) {
$("#opt_level").on('change', function() {
var level = $(this).val();
alert(level);
if(level){
$.ajax ({
type: 'POST',
url: 'example-domain.com',
data: { hps_level: '' + level + '' },
success : function(htmlresponse) {
$('#opt_lesson_list').append(htmlresponse);
alert(htmlresponse);
},error:function(e){
alert("error");}
});
}
});
});

<option value="level2">Level 2</option>
<option value="level3">Level 3</option>

I am trying to make a set of webpages that will display a unique graph based on a simple form that only has a selector box and a submit button. Basically what I want to happen is when the user changes the month in the selector and presses submit, a new chart set will render on the same page.
Here is the HTML initial page:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<SCRIPT src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.10.1.min.js"></SCRIPT>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<CENTER>
<FORM ID="form1" METHOD="post" ACTION="">
<SELECT NAME="monthSelector">
<OPTION VALUE="0">Select Month...</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="1">January</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="2">February</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="3">March</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="4">April</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="5">May</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="6">June</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="7">July</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="8">August</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="9">September</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="10">October</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="11">November</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="12">December</OPTION>
</SELECT>
<INPUT TYPE="submit" VALUE="Show Charts">
</FORM>
<DIV ID="response"></div>
<SCRIPT>
function submit()
{
$(function()
{
var month = 3;
var formdata = "month=" + month;
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: 'showCharts.php',
data: formdata,
success: function(data) {
$("#response").html(data);
}
});
});
}
</SCRIPT>
</CENTER>
</BODY>
</HTML>
and here is showCharts.php:
<?php
include("../FusionCharts/FusionCharts.php");
include("../DBConnect.php");
$month = $_POST['month'];
echo $month;
//insert complex queries and fusioncharts code that already works!
?>
Someone please help me, I've been staring at this for hours and can't make any progress.
You can also use the .load method of jQuery:
function submit()
{
var month = 3;
var formdata = month;
$('#response').load('showCharts.php?month='+formdata);
}
Also, you will need to set:
$month = $_REQUEST['month'];
Another way to do it would be:
$('select').change(function() {
var formdata = { month: document.getElementsByName('monthSelector')[0].value };
$('#response').load( 'showCharts.php', formdata);
});
Try replacing
<FORM ID="form1" METHOD="post" ACTION="">
for
<FORM ID="form1" METHOD="post" ONSUBMIT="submit(); return false;">
It should work.
In the part of jQuery, put this:
function submit()
{
var month = $('select[name="monthSelector"]').val();
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: 'showCharts.php',
data:{'month':month},
success: function(data)
{
$("#response").html(data);
}
});
}
One more thing: try to improve the HTML code, it will give a better image to your webpage.
Are you sure the submit function is even called? Do you bind the form's submit event at all?
I would do something like $("#form1").submit(submit);
Also, you should return false at the end of submit() to block the default form action (which is refresh the current page I believe)
Try to update the variable formdata to make it a json object rather than a string.
<SCRIPT>
function submit()
{
$(function()
{
var month = 3;
var formdata = {'month': month}; //change made here
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: 'showCharts.php',
data: formdata,
success: function(data) {
$("#response").html(data);
}
});
});
}
</SCRIPT>
Your jQuery code should be as follows:
$(function() {
var month = 3;
var formdata = { month: month };
$('#response').load( 'showCharts.php', formdata );
$('#form1').submit(function( e ) {
e.preventDefault();
var formData = { month: this.monthSelector.value };
$('#response').load( 'showCharts.php', formData);
});
});
When using the ajax .load() method, here is what you should be aware of:
Request Method
The POST method is used if data is provided as an object; otherwise,
GET is assumed.
Therefore, with the above jQuery code, your PHP script need not be changed.
I have a table with multiple rows that lists records from my database.
These records are projects' information and in each row, I have drop down list to modify the status of the project.
To do so, I used Ajax because I hate to refresh the whole page after update.
This is the function I created to do the update:
function call(){
var projid=$('#projid').val();
var projstatus=$('#projstatus').val();
var dataall={'projid':projid, 'projstatus':projstatus};
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: "stsproj.php",
data: dataall,
success: function (data) {
}
});
}
And below is my drop down list:
<?php do { ?>
<td>
<form action="<?php echo $editFormAction; ?>" method="post" name="form2" id="form2">
<input type="hidden" name="MM_update" value="form2" />
<input type="hidden" name="projid" id="projid" value="<?php echo $row_projlist['projid']; ?>" />
<select name="projstatus" id="projstatus" class="select1" onchange="call()">
<option value="<?php echo $row_status['projstatus'];?>"><?php echo $row_status['sts'];?></option>
<option value="1">Awaiting</option>
<option value="2">Ongoing</option>
<option value="3">Finishing</option>
</select>
</form>
</td>
<?php }while($row_projlist = $projlist->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)); ?>
My problem is the following:
When I update the status of the first project, it works but when I try to do it with other projects, it doesn't work.
To be more specific, the parameters of the first project are sent always (this is what firebug says).
Please help!
Your problem is due to duplicate ids. You don't need to use ids(actually do not use id for automatic list generation. Id names must be unique). Remove call function from your select box and use below javascript;
You can use such js to handle that;
$(function() {
$("select[name='projstatus']").change(function() {
var projid = $(this).parent("form").find("input[name='projid']").val();
var projstatus = $(this).val();
var dataall = {'projid':projid, 'projstatus':projstatus};
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: "stsproj.php",
data: dataall,
success: function (data) {
}
});
});
});
You can see working example for form manipulating part here : http://jsfiddle.net/cubuzoa/SYf8s/
The previous answer will probably solve your problem, but I think it can be simplified.
for the form...
<form>
<select class="select1" onchange="call(<?=$row_projlist['projid']?>)">
<option value="<?=$row_status['projstatus']?>"><?=$row_status['sts']?></option>
<option value="1">Awaiting</option>
<option value="2">Ongoing</option>
<option value="3">Finishing</option>
</select>
</form>
and the javascript
function call(id)
{
$.post('stsproj.php',{'projid':id, 'projstatus':$('#projstatus').val()} )
.done(function(data){
//do something with data
});
}
I know this has been asked some time, but the solutions before did not help, and I do not understand if I am missing something
I have simple php/hmtl page with an index.php where I include the different content php pages with a simple GET check:
if (isset($_GET['section'], $section[$_GET['section']])) {
include $section[$_GET['section']];
} else {
include $section['home'];
}
Now one of these sections contains a form which I want to do some magical ajax/jquery action with.
In my javascript file which is loaded at the bottom of the index.php I have following jquery ajax stuff
//ajax load domain search script
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#lookup_domain').live("click", function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
searchVal = $('#domain').val();
topLevel = $('.custom_select').val();
domain = searchVal + '.' + topLevel;
$.ajax({
type: 'GET',
url: 'script_domain.php',
data: 'domain=' + domain,
dataType: 'html',
beforeSend: function() {
$('#result').html('<img style="margin-left: 80px;margin-top: 30px;" src="_assets/img/loader.gif" alt="loading..." />');
if (!searchVal[0]) {
$('#result').html('<p>Syötä domain nimi.</p>');
return false;
}
},
success: function(response) {
$('#result').html(response);
},
error: function(response) {
$('#result').html('<p>Haussa virheitä.</p>');
}
});
});
});
I thought it would be enough to use
$(document).ready(function(){
and the live method (i have jquery 1.7.1 so live should be working?)
$('#lookup_domain').live("click", function() {
but unfortunatedly this is not working, the form just sends it to itself and loads the page again.
Here is the form:
<?php
if(!defined('indexcalled')){die('Direct access not premitted');}
?>
<div id="domain_search">
<h5>hae verkkotunnusta</h5>
<form action="#" method="get" class="domain_form">
<input type="text" name="domain" class="domain_input" />
<div class="select_wrap">
<select class="custom_select">
<option value="fi">.FI</option>
<option value="com">.COM</option>
<option value="net">.NET</option>
<option value="me">.ME</option>
<option value="info">.INFO</option>
</select>
</div><!--/select wrap-->
<input type="submit" value="Syötä" class="domain_submit_btn" id="lookup_domain"/>
</form>
<div class="clear"></div>
</div><!--/domain search-->
What am I missing here? Is there any good documentation about how to use jquery with this kind of dynamical page setup?
EDIT
My original question was, how to handle these kind of elements properly with jquery, because they are included later on.
I found that I should be working with on() instead of live because its deprecated in 1.7 too. So I edited the code like this:
$(document.body).on("click", '#lookup_domain', function(e){
e.preventDefault();
$(document.body).on("click", '#domain', function(event){
alert($(this).text());
});
But the alert does not work, it does nothing. What am I missing here?
You're calling e.preventDefault(), which should keep the form from submitting, however you are not passing the event object into your click handler. Update it to this and it should work:
$('#lookup_domain').live("click", function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
...
});
Because you are using a submit button for your live click you need to disable the form submission.
There are two solutions:
1, Return false on the click event:
$('#lookup_domain').live("click", function() {
// all of your code
return false;
})
2, add an onsubmit attribute to your form:
<form action="#" method="get" class="domain_form" onsubmit="return false;">
</form>
Thanks for all guys who helped me in the chat, the correct method is to first have the document ready, then use .on() with click method with body to access the element created afterwards. Then just with normal .val() to get the values, like this:
$(document).ready(function(){
$(document.body).on("click", '#lookup_domain', function(e){
e.preventDefault();
searchVal = $('#domain').val();
