How to run php script from CLI? - php

I have the method stored in Z:\work\project\apps\controllers\_cron\tools\method
How can I call "method" using the command line?

You run the PHP executable with the location of the file as an argument (Windows example: php.exe path/to/method.php). The location of php.exe depends on where you installed it.

Easy as
C:\path\to\php.exe -f "Z:\path\to\file.php"

Run PHP script with command line globally on win10

How to run a PHP script with command line globally, like:
update var1=abc var2 var3=def
"Update" located in fact: "C:\Localhost\Scripts\Update.php"
Many sources suggest this as:
php update.php var1=abc var2 var3=def
Shortly: How to run a PHP script as if it was a registered executable?
Disclaimer: I've written this answer for Linux/Ubuntu, I'm not sure if it'll work for Windows (the OP updated the question's requirements).
So, this is possible, the way I've described here basically just has a global bash script call a PHP file. Here's the steps:
Make a new bash script:
#!/usr/bin/env bash
php /path/to/yourphpfile.php
Change the file executable: chmod +x /path/to/yourbashscript
Copy the bash script into /usr/local/bin/: sudo cp /path/to/yourbashscript /usr/local/bin/
Open a new terminal, then run yourbashscript (or whatever you named it).
And voila! A globally available PHP script!
I finally solved it:
-Create a .bat file where your php file in, it contains:
#ECHO OFF
php %~dp0/update.php %*
-And save it as "update.bat"
-Add the directory name into "Path" in "Environment Variables"
Now you can write "update var1=abc var2 var3=def" freely in command prompt!

Run NodeJS commands from PHP

I have the following PHP code that is run when a user clicks a button on a local intranet page to run some Node JS commands. e.g.
exec('npm install', $output);
$output = implode(PHP_EOL, $output);
echo $output;
But the command doesn't seem to get run... It does if I type the command into the command prompt and run it...
I don't see any errors and NodeJS is set as a system variable in the Path so it should know what grunt is... Any ideas? Other commands, e.g. whoami run fine.
Any ideas?
I'm on Windows 7.
Update: Based on the comments below I can now get an error with:
exec('npm install 2>&1', $output, $returnCode);
$output = implode(PHP_EOL, $output);
echo $output . ' ' . $returnCode;
And this is the error:
TypeError: Cannot call method 'get' of undefined at C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs\node_modules\npm\lib\npm.js:310:23 at C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs\node_modules\npm\node_modules\npmconf\npmconf.js:80:7 at Array.forEach (native) at C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs\node_modules\npm\node_modules\npmconf\npmconf.js:79:13 at f (C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs\node_modules\npm\node_modules\once\once.js:16:25) at C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs\node_modules\npm\node_modules\npmconf\npmconf.js:108:14 at Conf. So it looks like the PHP knows where NodeJS and NPM is... but can't run it?
If I do whoami in the PHP I get: nt authority\iusr
But if I do it from the command prompt then I get: dom\cameron
I wonder if it's because PHP runs it as a different user to when I run it directly in the command prompt...
Okay I've managed to fix this!
Basically you need to run the website (where the PHP file lives) as the same user as where NodeJS is run from!
To achieve this I did the following in IIS:
1.) Find the website
2.) Choose basic settings
3.) Click the connect as... button
4.) Choose 'specific user'
5.) Enter `dom/cameron` and my password
6.) Restart IIS
If anyone has any ideas for how to get NodeJS running for the default nt authority\iusr then feel free to post an answer :)
You defined npm in WINDOWS path, but did PHP recognize it?
I suggest you should test it with writing the full NPM path in the exec. If it works, than you should call putenv() with correct parameters before executing npm install..
So first try:
exec('C:\npm-test\npm install', $output);
$output = implode(PHP_EOL, $output);
echo $output;
And if it works, use the putenv() command before calling exec(). Example:
putenv("npm='C:\npm-test\npm'");
//and then exec(...)
The error you're getting indicating that an object is not defined. It's quite possible that a module is simply not loading because you're not running the script from the correct location, and relative links to some include are not working. Running as the correct user might fix it. Or try changing to the correct directory before running the node script. Or change the location of the links inside the node script.

Running PhantomJS from PHP with exec()

I've got the following script:
#!/bin/sh
export DISPLAY=:0
phantomjs --version
It try to run it from the following PHP script:
<?php
$result = shell_exec('sh test.sh');
echo $result;
?>
This script return the following error:
[Thu Jun 19 10:31:31 2014] [error] [client] test.sh: line 3: phantomjs: command not found
I tried to run phantomjs -v by hand in a console, and it runs fine. I checked the PATH, and phantomjs is correctly defined and found.
The execution environment is a virtual Server with LiveConfig.
Can someone help me understand what I'm doing wrong ?
It could be an issue with shell_exec() and line breaks,
try adding "2>&1" to the string you are passing:
$result = shell_exec('sh test.sh 2>&1');
this worked for me, found it in the top comment here, naturally ;)
Your PATH probably lacks the location for the phantomjs executable. PhantomJS is probably installed in /usr/local/bin so you need to add this to your PATH variable:
#!/bin/sh
export DISPLAY=:0
PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin
phantomjs --version
To check what the current PATH is, you could begin the shell script with:
#!/bin/sh
echo $PATH
<?php
exec('/usr/local/bin/phantomjs path/somescript.js');
?>
Yes. Sometimes phantomjs don't need full path in some environment without generate any error. However, sometimes it does.
Always use the full path for all argument in the php command.
Did you use the fullpath for hello.js?
Do not use exec(). Never. It's a bad way.
Use the php-phantomjs and PhantomJS Runner instead.

Running php script (php function) in linux bash

How we run php script using Linux bash?
php file test.php
test.php contains:
<?php echo "hello\n" ?>
From the command line, enter this:
php -f filename.php
Make sure that filename.php both includes and executes the function you want to test. Anything you echo out will appear in the console, including errors.
Be wary that often the php.ini for Apache PHP is different from CLI PHP (command line interface).
Reference: https://secure.php.net/manual/en/features.commandline.usage.php
First of all check to see if your PHP installation supports CLI. Type: php -v. You can execute PHP from the command line in 2 ways:
php yourfile.php
php -r 'print("Hello world");'
There are two ways you can do this. One is the one already mentioned, i.e.:
php -f filename.php
The second option is making the script executable (chmod +x filename.php) and adding the following line to the top of your .php file:
#!/path/to/php
I'm not sure though if a webserver likes this, so if you also want to use the .php file in a website, that might not be the best idea. Still, if you're just writing some kind of script, it is easier to type ./path/to/phpfile.php than having to type php -f /path/to/phpfile.php every time.
Simply this should do:
php test.php
just run in linux terminal to get phpinfo .
php -r 'phpinfo();'
and to run file like index.php
php -f index.php
php -f test.php
See the manual for full details of running PHP from the command line
php test.php
should do it, or
php -f test.php
to be explicit.
I was in need to decode URL in a Bash script. So I decide to use PHP in this way:
$ cat url-decode.sh
#!/bin/bash
URL='url=https%3a%2f%2f1%2fecp%2f'
/usr/bin/php -r '$arg1 = $argv[1];echo rawurldecode($arg1);' "$URL"
Sample output:
$ ./url-decode.sh
url=https://1/ecp/

What is the difference between running a script from the command line and from exec() with PHP?

I'm trying to run a Python script using exec() from within PHP. My command works fine when I run it directly using a cmd window, but it produces an error when I run it from exec() in PHP.
My Python script uses NTLK to find proper nouns. Example command:
"C:\Python25\python.exe" "C:\wamp\projects\python\trunk\tests\find_proper_nouns.py" "I went to London this morning"
returns [London] when I run it from cmd, but throws an error in the Apache log when I run the same command from exec().The script is defintely getting run OK - if I change the python script to be print "Hello World" that is returned fine.
I know it's a big ask for anyone to know how to fix this NLTK error, but I could really do with any pointers as to why running it from exec is different to cmd. (The command is identical).
I'm running WAMP on Windows 7 with Apache 2.2.11.
Here's the error in the Apache log:

You have to run nltk.download() and choose 'maxent_treebank_pos_tagger'. You must make a python script and in it put:
#!/usr/bin/python
import nltk
nltk.download('maxent_treebank_pos_tagger');
then run it from command line. It will install the data files for the POS tagges, which you don't have installed yet.
After you do this it should work.
Your web server likely runs with other privileges than yourself. Possible problems include:
Path/file permission: can the web server user access the files it needs?
Different environment: are all necessary environment variables (PATH, Python-specific stuff, …) set?
Configuration: are there per-user configurations for Python or the module?
Tip: execute set in both the command prompt and from the PHP process and check the differences.
From the shell/terminal, you can use:
sudo python -m nltk.downloader maxent_treebank_pos_tagger
It will install maxent_treebank_pos_tagger (i.e. the standard treebank POS tagger in NLTK).
