Cakephp different classes for requests - php

I have an application in Cakephp. In my front-end, it only responses for one request and I have used usual CakeRequest() class, and in my back-end, as far as using extjs, I have defined another Request and Response Class for multi-requests and multi-responses. but I have problem in distinguishing between them. I mean where and when one of them is executed. the default cakephp index.php file for front-end is
$Dispatcher->dispatch(new CakeRequest(), new CakeResponse(array('charset' => Configure::read('App.encoding'))));
and for back-end is
$Dispatcher->dispatch(new TestRequestCollection(...
but I don't know the if clause between them.

To what if clause are you referring to?
CakePHP is not designed to use different request classes in the index.php. Not sure what you are doing here. You might want to go the same route I went with Bancha and create a second frontend controller which does different a dispatching.

What is the right way to pass parameters to a Kohana 3.3 controller called through HMVC?

I am trying to use Kohana 3.3 HMVC approach. I have created a view and a controller for generating a segment of a page (meant to be integrated into the actual web page by another controller and to be never accessed through HTTP from outside a controller) filled with data records retrieved through ORM. What I need is to pass some data (records selection criteria) from the top controller through the middle controller to the ORM model. Altering GET/POST data as suggested here seems wacky (as it is going to alter the whole application state rather than of the target controller as far as I understand) (but perhaps it is considered okay in the PHP world, I don't know (I am coming from the strict C++/C#/Java/Scala world), let me know if so). Is there a better way?
The HMVC approach works just like a normal request except that it has its own instance of the request class. From the HMVC sub request you can access the parent request object by loading the initial request.
$parent_request_query = $this->request->initial()->query();
You can also access the current request.
$current_request_query = $this->request->current()->query();
You could also just pass parameters.
$params = array(
'passing' => 'data'
);
echo Request::factory('controller/action')->query($params)->execute()->body()

How to decide on controllers for web application?

I use php and usually structure my application into model-view-controller so its always accessed via index.php with class and method attributes. Class attribute passed as part of URL specifies controller class and method simply method to be called. This seems to be pretty common, but then I'm always having trouble in figuring out what controllers shall I create. What is the best, easiest and most applicable way to decide on what controllers should be created? I understand it depends on web application itself but must be some general way of thinking to get this process started.
I've found that building controllers based on your application's objects works well, and can take care of most actions you'll want for your app.
Take a look at SO -- there's URLs starting with /questions, /tags, /users, etc. I'd suggest a design which starts by creating a different controller for each object. /questions (or /questions/list) returns a list of all the questions. /questions/[0-9]+ returns the details of a particular question with that id number. /questions/ask returns the Ask Question interface.
As you continue building your app, you might find that the controller-based-on-objects method doesn't meet all your needs. For example, on my site (http://www.wysiap.com), I eventually made a /list controller to simplify my Grails URL mapping. But in most cases I did use this method and it's easy to figure out which controller should be doing different actions.
I recommend to think about the pages you'll need in your applications to accomplish all the requested tasks. You'll group similar tasks on the same page and create as many pages as you need. A page can be sliced in different views for specific actions.
With this in mind you could have one controller per page. Each view of the page can have its own method (action) in the controller. And inside the method of each view you can have a switch() that will enable you to have several tasks for the view. Example:
index.php (Dashboard controller)
/question-list (QuestionList controller, action index, display the whole page)
/question-list/add (QuestionList controller, action add, manage the "add" view with tasks like show-form, validate-form, insert-question)
/profile (Profile controller, action index)
/profile/edit (Profile controller, action edit, manage all the tasks requested for your profile)
...

Way to bypass the controller in CodeIgniter?

I've been using the CodeIgniter framework for PHP and am enjoying it, but I notice that it seems to require a controller for every view. I'm wondering if there is a way to call a specific model from the view itself, rather than route through a controller. I understand that use of a controller is best practice in most cases, especially where the data from the model needs to be modified in some way, but I have cases where I just need to do a strict data pull to the view (which is loaded via ajax), and setting up a controller for that seems superfluous.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
You're fundamentally misunderstanding MVC, at least as implemented in CI.
All URLs on your site (at least those that utilize the CI framework) are mapped to functions (methods) within controllers.

It doesn't matter whether the URL is accessed via regular HTTP or via AJAX. This is always a one to one mapping. Because of this, you should think of the controller/method combination as the "web page". Do not think of the view as the web page.
Models and views are subordinate to controllers. The controller delegates specific responsibilities to them - database interaction for models, and page output to views.
Because models and views only serve to perform delegated responsibilities, their use is not required in any given controller/method. Help pages, for example, generally have no need to interact with a database, so there is no model utilized by the controller/method combination that serves a given help page. Likewise, form handlers frequently redirect to another page upon completion of processing. As such, there is no view corresponding to the form handler (but there is (likely) a view called from the controller/method in the redirected to page).
Furthermore, models and views do not necessarily correspond on a one to one basis with individual controllers/methods. Any given model can be loaded and used from within several controllers. Similarly, a controller could have a single monolithic view that is used by all methods, or each method could be assigned its own view. (Or, as I just said, a given controller/method could utilize no view at all.)
Finally, CI does not enforce strict MVC separation. You can interact with the database and echo HTML all from within the controller and CI will not complain. Nevertheless, this separation and delegation of responsibility is followed because logically separating the responsibilities makes the code easier to read and helps you follow the DRY principle in your coding.
The fundamental Understanding is that the "web page" corresponds to the controller/method. The view and model, when used, handle delegated responsibilities for the controller/method.

That's not possible as of what I know, the main abstract class of the CI controller imposes restriction to use a controller otherwise you will get a fatal error.
And actually what you say will break the best practice of MVC design pattern. You got to go to model through a controller not view.
I'm a bit confused as to exactly what you're trying to achieve. The controller's value, aside from just being a clean way to handle incoming requests, is to manage the interaction between the models and the views and to determine which views to load. It's also entirely reasonable to load model data directly from your views, but how did you get to your view in the first place?
I guess I'm just having a hard time seeing the context here..
To run a query via Ajax you still need to provide a URL / path in the javascript call. You can not get around the fact that a controller function has to "catch" this call; you can not map a url directly to a model. All you need is 3-4 lines of code in your controller.
Via URI routing you can map a URL to a different controller, so you don't "require a controller for every view". I always create a controller called "ajax" to handle those requests.
A basic ajax call with jquery can be something like this
$('#prod_img').load( "http://domain.com/ajax/get_img", {'color': 'blue', 'url_title': 'bla' } )
You can echo stuff in your controller, so rather than trying to bypass the controller you should be looking into how to do away with the views. This will actually be easy, you can load the db class in the controller just as you can in a model.
But if you really don't want to use MVC perhaps Codeigniter is not the framework for you.
You should read more into the principles of MVC.
Views are strictly for presentation of data, the model shouldn't communicate with views directly.
But still if that's what you want then just pass $this->db from the controller to the view and use it in the view.
Then again, this is NOT a good practice.

ZF create a new controller

I made my first project with ZF, used the Zend_Tool component.
For the index controller a created some actions, and they work well.
But my question is, when do you create a new controller?

The controller receives input and initiates a response by making calls on model objects.
So when to create a new controller totally depends on your application. Often, there is one controller per database table in your model. The controller usually would allow for handling CRUD requests and delegating them to your model to process them.

When you want to have a different page. Are you using different logic or trying to fulfil a completely different task?
It should be quite clear to you when you want to create a new Controller, it is because you are doing something completely different.

Kohana - where do you put AJAX scripts?

I am using Kohana but this question applies to Rails, CI, or any other MVC web development framework. Where is the best place to stick one's server side AJAX scripts?
I was planning on creating an Ajax_Controller and using a method/action per individual script.
For example, a login form on the home page index.php/home would send an XMLHttpRequest to index.php/ajax/login, and the edit profile form index.php/profile/edit would send an XMLHttpRequest to index.php/ajax/editprofile. What's the best practice?
I tend to put my ajax actions in the same controller as the non-ajax actions for any given model.
When I can, I try to use the same actions and only change the output type. Most tasks should have a non-ajax version anyway, so this tends to work quite well. Very handy for reducing logic duplication.
AJAX crosses all of the MVC boundaries. That is, it doesn't go into just one of model, view or controller.
Your AJAX scripts will be calling scripts on your site - so this would involve a section of your controller layer which you've created for the purpose.
That controller in turn would access the database using the interface provided by your model layer, just as a non-AJAX request would.
The data for the response back to the client may be packaged as JSON or XML or something. Technically this is the task of your view layer, though if your application's definition of a view layer is nothing more than "an HTML templating system" rather than "processing and formatting anything that gets sent back to the client whether it's HTML or something else like XML" then your XML or JSON generation may need to go into a new little section of its own.
As for sending the scripts (Javascript files) themselves, this is probably going to be handled directly by the web server rather than from within your MVC framework.
Do you make different controllers for GET and POST requests? I don't. In my opinion, JS requests shouldn't be dealt with differently either.
I personally see JS requests just like GET, POST or any other type of request. So if I have user-related JS-based actions, I simply create them in the user controller.
If you mean the AJAX (Javascript) scripts themselves, these should go into your public/js folder. However, if you mean the actions invoked by these AJAX requests, they should be treated as any other actions of the respective controllers. To be completely RESTful, you should be using a different format (json, xml, etc.) as return values for those actions.
I am a noob, but based on my understanding, to achieve ajax with php mvc... thinking steps might be:
change the definition/function of the existing php view layer from 'HTML template' into 'results formatting (XML,JSON etc..' -> results from relevant module, which then called by controller to output into AJAX object, then it means you need to write view layers into each particular class with formatting methods
PHP module layer stays same
build a Ajax router class with JS which stay the same structure which you route in your PHP
build a ajax results handler class with JS to handle the results got back from PHP controllers (XML JSON etc..), then from here do whatever user interactions you want, this will be called by above Ajax router class
So,
ajax router (send XMLhttprequest)
-> PHP controllers C
-> PHP module -> PHP view results M
-> PHP controllers output results V
-> ajax results handle (into page)
I don't use Kohana but what I do in my framework is that AJAX scripts are controllers. I try to treat them as standalone controllers but in the end they are just controllers.
Using a separate controller is a good idea. I either organize my controllers by function and then actions by return type.
Additionally, when I'm using Pylons I can decorate an action with #jsonify and that will automatically take care of converting python objects to JSON. Very handy.
I like to keep all my ajax requests in one controller, typically dispatching their requests through a shared model (that the non ajax controller also uses)
The main difference being the view that results via the ajax controller (html fragments, json data, etc) or the non-ajax controller (full pages)
You could wrap it up as a general REST-api, and use RESTful conventions and URIs.
Example:
Instead of index.php/ajax/editprofile it could be a PUT request to index.php/api/profile/profilename.
