I am fairly new to JavaScript and PHP, and it's the first time to encounter and use JSON. I think my AJAX request is fine, but even so, the $_POST array is empty.
Here is the AJAX call:
$( "#submit" ).click( function() {
var submit_basic = $.post( 'index.php/submit_data/pass_basic_data',
get_experience_data()
);
submit_basic.done( function(data) {
alert(data); // for debugging purposes
});
});
And this is the function that takes the data from a table:
function get_experience_data() {
var temp, data_exp = [];
$( "#exptable tbody tr" ).each( function() {
temp = {
company: $(this).find('td').eq(0).html(),
position: $(this).find('td').eq(1).html(),
datestart: $(this).find('td').eq(2).html(),
dateend: $(this).find('td').eq(3).html(),
description: $(this).find('td').eq(4).html()
};
data_exp = data_exp.concat(temp);
});
return data_exp;
}
And for reference, the destination controller function that only prints the $_POST array (by the way I am using CodeIgniter):
public function pass_basic_data() {
var_dump($_POST);
}
Can you please pinpoint the error I've made, since I can't find it. Thanks a lot!
UPDATE: I am getting this message in particular:
array(1) {
["undefined"] =>
string(0) ""
}
UPDATE:
Thanks for all the help guys! I already solved it. It made me dance all around the room.
I wrapped the return value in a {name : value} pair.
$( "#submit" ).click( function() {
var post_vars = get_experience_data();
var submit_basic = $.post( 'index.php/submit_data/pass_basic_data',
{object: post_vars}
);
submit_basic.done( function(data) {
alert(data); // for debugging purposes
});
});
I would suggest doing the following for a start :
var submit_basic = $.post('index.php/submit_data/pass_basic_data', get_experience_data());
Try this:
var submit_basic = $.post('index.php/submit_data/pass_basic_data', get_experience_data());
// you need to add parentheses here --------------------------------------------------^
When you pass a function to $.post() it assumes it is a callback that is to be called after the response is received. What you want to do is call the function and pass it's return value in to $.post().
By the way, this line:
data_exp = data_exp.concat(temp);
could be replaced with:
data_exp.push(temp);
No need to be creating a new array every time if you're just adding a value to the end.
You need to execute the method get_experience_data, otherwise you are passing the function not executing it
try troubleshooting the actual jquery, not the php part.
but heres a suggestion:
var post_vars = get_experience_data();
var submit_basic = $.post( 'index.php/submit_data/pass_basic_data', post_vars );
here is a conclusion to my previous answer plus the comments, but im still not sure if you could stingify arrays in arrays..
var submit_basic = $.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: 'index.php/submit_data/pass_basic_data',
dataType: 'json',
async: false,
data: JSON.stringify(get_experience_data()),
success: function (response) {
alert(response);
}
});
UPDATE:
modify your get_experience_data function according to this jsfiddle script
like this:
temp = '{ ';
temp+= '"company":"' +$(this).find('td').eq(0).html()+ '", ';
temp+= '"position":"' +$(this).find('td').eq(1).html()+ '", ';
temp+= '"datestart":"' +$(this).find('td').eq(2).html()+ '", ';
temp+= '"dateend":"' +$(this).find('td').eq(3).html()+ '", ';
temp+= '"description":"' +$(this).find('td').eq(4).html()+ '"';
temp+= ' }';

I'm trying to push an array from jquery to a php function and I'm out of options to make it work. I've tried multiple options; $_request, $_post, with JSON.stringify, without JSON.stringify, ...
But I keep getting 'null'; can't figure out the right combination. Someone who's willing to explain me why it's not working and how to fix?
JQuery code:
var userIDs = [];
$( "tr.user-row" ).each(function() {
var userID = $(this).attr("data-userid");
userIDs.push(userID);
});
var jsonIDs = JSON.stringify(userIDs);
$.ajax({
url: ajaxurl, // Since WP 2.8 ajaxurl is always defined and points to admin-ajax.php
data: {
'action':'built_ranking', // This is our PHP function below
'data' : {data:jsonIDs},
},
dataType:"json",
success:function(data){
// This outputs the result of the ajax request (The Callback)
//$("tr[data-userid='"+userID+"'] td.punten").html(data.punten);
//$("tr[data-userid='"+userID+"'] td.afstand").html(data.afstand);
console.log(data);
},
error: function(errorThrown){
window.alert(errorThrown);
}
});
PHP code:
function built_ranking(){
if ( isset($_REQUEST) ) {
$data = json_decode(stripslashes($_REQUEST['data']));
foreach($data as $d){
echo $d;
}
print json_encode($data);
//$testResult = array("points"=>"test", "afstand"=>"test");
//print json_encode($testResult);
}
// Always die in functions echoing AJAX content
die();
}
add_action( 'wp_ajax_built_ranking', 'built_ranking' );
If I print the $testResult it returns the array and I can use the data back in jquery, so the function is called.
I've based the code on Send array with Ajax to PHP script
I've multiple ajax calls with $_request instead of $_post and they are working fine. But maybe they can't handle arrays? I've no idea... ^^
What I learned from this question and the help I got: don't guess, debug. try to find ways to see what is posted, what is received, ...
You can read how to 'debug' in the comments of the original question. Useful for starters as me ;)
Working code:
JQuery
var jsonIDs = JSON.stringify(userIDs);
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: ajaxurl, // Since WP 2.8 ajaxurl is always defined and points to admin-ajax.php
data: {
'action':'built_ranking', // This is our PHP function below
'data' : jsonIDs,
},
dataType:"json",
success:function(data){
// This outputs the result of the ajax request (The Callback)
//$("tr[data-userid='"+userID+"'] td.punten").html(data.punten);
//$("tr[data-userid='"+userID+"'] td.afstand").html(data.afstand);
console.log(data);
},
error: function(errorThrown){
window.alert(errorThrown);
}
});
PHP
function built_ranking(){
if ( isset($_POST) ) {
$data = json_decode(stripslashes($_POST['data']));
print json_encode($data);
//$testResult = array("points"=>"test", "afstand"=>"test");
//print json_encode($testResult);
}
// Always die in functions echoing AJAX content
die();
}
add_action( 'wp_ajax_built_ranking', 'built_ranking' );
I have used ajax as below:
$('.province').on('click', function (e)
{
var optionSelected = $("option:selected", this);
var valueSelected = this.value;
var valueSelected = valueSelected.replace(/ /gi,"%20");
var valueSelected = encodeURIComponent(valueSelected);
//alert(valueSelected);
$.ajax({
type: 'post',
encoding:"UTF-8",
url: "<?php echo base_url();?>Search/cities_of_province/"+valueSelected,
data: '',
contentType: "charset=utf-8",
success: function (result) {
//alert(result);
$('.city').html(result);
return false;
}
});
return false;
});
valueSelected in above url is a persion statement with space in it. for example it is استان آذربایجان شرقی.
when it is post to the url, just first part(استان) is recieved.
I aslo removed valueSelected.replace(/ /gi,"%20") and encodeURIComponent(valueSelected) but nothing happend.
what is the solution?
I faced no issue like that.. I used no encodeURIComponent no encoding:"UTF-8" no contentType: "charset=utf-8"
Nothing needed. And it works simply perfect. I tested it with following code
I have Html
<input id='yourInputId' value='استان آذربایجان شرقی' />
JavaScript
<script>
var valueSelected = $('#yourInputId').val();
//before ajax request
alert(valueSelected ); // it gives me here =>استان آذربایجان شرقی
//before making ajax reuest plz confirm you get above value correctly here
alert(<?php echo base_url();?>); //it must be valid as well
$.ajax
({
type: "POST",
url: "<?php echo base_url();?>Search/cities_of_province", //should be valid
data: { province : valueSelected },
success: function (result) {
alert(result); //it gives => استان آذربایجان شرقی
},
error:function(a)
{
alert(a.responseText);
}
});
</script>
PHP
<?php
if(isset($_POST['province']))
$v = $_POST['province'];
else
$v = 'Province value not provided from client side';
echo $v;
?>
So it looks like you are using a select input here. If that is the case, you should use alphanumeric/ASCII value key in your options and not the human readable labels. That might look like:
<option value="some_ascii_key">استان آذربایجان شرقی</option>
You can then have a reliable key to use in your AJAX request.
I also think your request should be a GET and not a POST since you are just reading values from API rather than trying to create/update records via API.
Putting it all together, you might have something like this:
// note values for each property/ley may not be important here
// as they are not really needed to validate that the province key
// in option value has not been modified by client,
// which is really what you are using this for.
// If you need to have option label text available in
// javascript you can store that here as shown.
var provinceConfiguration = {
'key1': 'استان آذربایجان شرق';
'key2': 'some other Persian string';
// and so on...
}
$('.province').on('click', function (e)
{
var optionSelected = $("option:selected", this);
var valueSelected = this.value;
// perhaps validate that value provided is amongst expected keys
// this used the provinceConfiguration object proposed in this example
if(typeof provinceConfiguration[valueSelected] === 'undefined') {
console.log('Unexpected province key passed');
e.stopPropagation();
return false;
}
// probably can drop this line if defined keys do not need encoding
var valueSelected = encodeURIComponent(valueSelected);
// since you can use default GET setting you can use this shorthand
$.get(
'<?php echo base_url();>Search/cities_of_province/' +
valueSelected,
function(result) {
// console.log(result);
$('.city').html(result);
return false;
}
);
/*
Or more verbose option
$.ajax({
type: 'GET',
// not valid setting key -> encoding:"UTF-8",
url: '<?php echo base_url();>Search/cities_of_province/' + valueSelected,
// default is fine here so not needed -> contentType: "charset=utf-8",
success: function (result) {
// console.log(result);
$('.city').html(result);
return false;
}
});
*/
return false;
});
Note that you should be using console.log() to debug code rather than alert(), as alert actually blocks code execution and may make some debugging more problematic as your debugging mechanism changes how your code executes. This can problem can be exacerbated when debugging asynchronous code.
Your server-side code would obviously need to be updated to understand the province keys as well.
Please take a look at this javascript library. That can be of help to you.

Please help me with my problem in displaying JSON data into my view..
my script is:
$('#supplierId').change(function(){
$.get("{{ url('api/dropdown')}}",
{ option: $(this).val() },
function(data) {
var firstnameID = $('#firstnameID');
$.each(data, function(index, element) {
firstnameID.val(element.first_name);
});
});
});
and my JSON reply is:
{"id":7,"first_name":"John","last_name":"Doe"}
the thing is when i tried to:
alert(element.first_name);
it says UNDEFINED, but when I:
alert(element);
it gives me the value of the last name which is Doe.. my question is how can I then access the other values like the ID and the first name..
EDITED:
this is my route:
Route::get('api/dropdown', function(){
$input = Input::get('option');
$supllier = Supplier::find($input);
returnResponse::json($supllier->select(array('id','first_name','last_name'))
->find($input));
});
Please help me with this one, This is my first time using JSON so im a bit confuse on how this works.
Best Regards
-Melvn
Why are you using each? This should work:
$('#supplierId').change(function(){
$.get("{{ url('api/dropdown')}}",
{ option: $(this).val() },
function(data) {
var firstnameID = $('#firstnameID');
firstnameID.val(data.first_name);
});
});
Ok, give this a try..
Explicitly state that what you're expecting back from the server is JSON using the dataType option in get().
$('#supplierId').change(function()
{
$.get("{{ url('api/dropdown')}}",
{ option: $(this).val() },
function(data)
{
var firstnameID = $('#firstnameID');
$.each(data, function(index, element)
{
firstnameID.val(element.first_name);
});
},
'json' // <<< this is the dataType
);
});
Now you should be able to access the data using the dot syntax:
console.log("last_name: " + element.last_name);
console.log("first_name: " + element.first_name);
console.log("id: " + element.id);
I would add another few lines, just to check that you're getting back what you expect to see:
console.log("NEW ELEMENT"); // << indicator in the console for your reference
console.log(element); // << the whole "element"
Initial .ajax call in jquery:
$.ajax({
type: 'post',
url: 'items_data.php',
data: "id="+id,
dataType: 'json',
success: function(data){
if(data){
make_item_rows(data);
}else{
alert("oops nothing happened :(");
}
}
});
Sends a simple string to a php file which looks like:
header('Content-type: application/json');
require_once('db.php');
if( isset($_POST['id'])){
$id = $_POST['id'];
}else{
echo "Danger Will Robinson Danger!";
}
$items_data = $pdo_db->query ("SELECT blah blah blah with $id...");
$result_array = $items_data->fetchAll();
echo json_encode($result_array);
I am catching the $result_array just fine and passing it on to another function. I double checked that there is indeed proper values being returned as I can just echo result to my page and it displays something like the following:
[{"item_id":"230","0":"230","other_id":"700"},{"item_id":"231","0":"231","other_id":"701"},{"item_id":"232","0":"232","other_id":"702"}]
I am having trouble figuring out how to iterate through the results so I can inject values into a table I have in my HTML. Here is what I have for my function:
function make_item_rows(result_array){
var string_buffer = "";
$.each(jQuery.parseJSON(result_array), function(index, value){
string_buffer += value.item_id; //adding many more eventually
$(string_buffer).appendTo('#items_container');
string_buffer = ""; //reset buffer after writing
});
}
I also tried putting an alert in the $.each function to make sure it was firing 3 times, which it was. However no data comes out of my code. Have tried some other methods as well with no luck.
UPDATE: I changed my code to include the parseJSON, no dice. Got an unexpected token error in my jquery file (right when it attempts to use native json parser). Tried adding the json header to no avail, same error. jquery version 1.9.1. Code as it is now should be reflected above.
Set the dataType:"JSON" and callback in your ajax call.
For example:
$.ajax({
url: "yourphp.php?id="+yourid,
dataType: "JSON",
success: function(json){
//here inside json variable you've the json returned by your PHP
for(var i=0;i<json.length;i++){
$('#items_container').append(json[i].item_id)
}
}
})
Please also consider in your PHP set the JSON content-type. header('Content-type: application/json');
function make_item_rows(result_array){
var string_buffer = "";
var parsed_array=JSON.parse(result_array);
$.each(parsed_array, function(){
string_buffer += parsed_array.item_id;
$(string_buffer).appendTo('#items_container');
string_buffer = "";
});
}
You need to parse it with jQuery.parseJSON
function make_item_rows(result_array){
var string_buffer = "";
$.each(jQuery.parseJSON(result_array), function(index, value){
string_buffer = value.item_id;
$(string_buffer).appendTo('#items_container');
});
}
Try this.
function make_item_rows(result_array){
var string_buffer = "";
$.each(result_array, function(index, value){
value = jQuery.parseJSON(value);
string_buffer += value.item_id;
$(string_buffer).appendTo('#items_container');
string_buffer = "";
});
}
Assuming you already parsed the json response and you have the array. I think the problem is you need to pass a callback to $.each that takes and index and an element param
function make_item_rows(result_array){
$.each(result_array, function(index, element){
document.getElementById("a").innerHTML+=element.item_id;
});
}
(Slightly modified) DEMO
for starters within the $.each you need to access the properties of the instance of object contained within result_array, not result_array itself.
var string_buffer = "";
$.each(result_array, function(index, object){
/* instance is "object"*/
alert( object.item_id);
});
Not entirely sure what you are expecting from this line: $(string_buffer).appendTo('#items_container');
$(string_buffer) does not create a valid jQuery selector since nothing within string_buffer has a prefix for class, tagname or ID, and values from json don't either
If just want the string value of the item_id appended :
$('#items_container').append( object.item_id+'<br/>');
If you are receiving this using jQuery AJAX methods you don't need to use $.parseJSON as other answers suggest, it will already be done for you internally provided you are setting correct dataType for AJAX
I am using Codeigniter and trying to use the jQuery autocomplete with it. I am also using #Phil Sturgeon client rest library for Codeigniter because I am getting the autocomplete data from netflix. I am return correct JSON and I can access the first element with
response(data.autocomplete.autocomplete_item[0].title.short);
but when I loop through the results
for (var i in data.autocomplete.autocomplete_item) {
response(data.autocomplete.autocomplete_item[i].title.short)
}
it acts like a string. Lets say the result is "Swingers", it will return:
Object.value = s
Object.value = w
Object.value = i
and so on.
the js:
$("#movies").autocomplete({
source: function(request, response) {
$.ajax({
url: "<?php echo site_url();?>/welcome/search",
dataType: "JSON",
type:"POST",
data: {
q: request.term
},
success: function(data) {
for (var i in data.autocomplete.autocomplete_item) {
response(data.autocomplete.autocomplete_item[i].title.short);
}
}
});
}
}).data("autocomplete")._renderItem = function(ul, item) {
//console.log(item);
$(ul).attr('id', 'search-autocomplete');
return $("<li class=\""+item.type+"\"></li>").data( "item.autocomplete", item ).append(""+item.title+"").appendTo(ul);
};
the controller:
public function search(){
$search = $this->input->post('q');
// Run some setup
$this->rest->initialize(array('server' => 'http://api.netflix.com/'));
// set var equal to results
$netflix_query = $this->rest->get('catalog/titles/autocomplete', array('oauth_consumer_key'=>$this->consumer_key,'term'=> $search,'output'=>'json'));
//$this->rest->debug();
//$json_data = $this->load->view('nice',$data,true);
//return $json_data;
echo json_encode($netflix_query);
}
the json return
{"autocomplete":
{"autocomplete_item":[
{"title":{"short":"The Strawberry Shortcake Movie: Sky's the Limit"}},
{"title":{"short":"Futurama the Movie: Bender's Big Score"}},
{"title":{"short":"Daffy Duck's Movie: Fantastic Island"}}
...
any ideas?
thanks.
there are some console logs with the return
the url
in, as you've noticed, doesn't do what you'd like with arrays. Use $.each
As far as I know, for (property in object) means that you want to access each of its properties rather than accessing them via the index. If you want to access them via the index, you probably want to use the standard for loop.
for (i = 0; i <= 10; i++) {
response(data.autocomplete.autocomplete_item[i].title.short);
}
or if you still want to use your code, try this:
for (i in data.autocomplete.autocomplete_item) {
response(i.title.short);
}
I haven't test them yet but I think you have the idea.
ok I figured out the correct format that I need to send to the autocomplete response method:
the view
$("#movies").autocomplete({
minLength: 2,
source: function(request, response) {
$.post("<?php echo base_url();?>welcome/search", {q: request.term},
function(data){
//console.log(data);
response(data);
}, 'json');
}
});
the controller:
$search = $this->input->post('q');
// Run some setup
$this->rest->initialize(array('server' => 'http://api.netflix.com/'));
// Pull in an array
$netflix_query = $this->rest->get('catalog/titles/autocomplete', array('oauth_consumer_key'=>$this->consumer_key,'term'=> $search,'output'=>'json'),'json');
$json = array();
foreach($netflix_query->autocomplete->autocomplete_item as $item){
$temp = array("label" => $item->title->short);
array_push($json,$temp);
}
echo json_encode($json);
what was needed was to send back to the view an array of objects. Thank you guys for all your answers and help!!
