reduction of each row in the table of database - php

i have a table temporary as follow as:
student | Data | number
-----------|---------------|--------------
1 | book | 2
1 | book | 5
1 | book | 9
2 | book | 1
2 | book | 5
i will show reduction of column in like as output column as follow as:
student | Data | number |output (number column of next row-previous line )
-----------|---------------|----------------|--------------
1 | book | 2 | 0
1 | book | 5 | 3 (result of (5-2=3)
1 | book | 9 | 4 (result of (9-5=4)
2 | book | 1 | 0
2 | book | 5 | 4 (result of (5-1=4)
how are writing of php's script is correct? because i'm confused

You didn't mention your DBMS, so this is standard SQL:
select student,
data,
number,
number - lag(number,1,number) over (partition by student order by id) as output
from the_table
order by student, id
SQLFiddle example

The following script will subtract the number from previous number for the same student. Here's how you can do it in MySQL (which doesn't support window functions.)
SELECT
t1.student,
t1.Data,
t1.number,
IF (t2.number IS NULL, 0, t1.number - MAX(t2.number)) as output
FROM
tbl t1
LEFT JOIN
tbl t2
ON
t1.student = t2.student
AND t1.number > t2.number
GROUP BY
t1.student, t1.Data, t1.number

Get neighboring rows (2 above and 2 below) of a certain row in PHP while loop

I have a table like so (after doing a query on it to order it by score):
+---+-------+------+
|id | level |score |
+---+-------+------+
| 4 | 1 | 30 |
| 3 | 1 | 35 |
| 1 | 1 | 40 |
| 5 | 1 | 45 |
| 7 | 1 | 50 |
| 8 | 1 | 55 |
+---+-------+------+
I will output that to php in a while loop. So each row in the while loop will be the same as in the table above.
Essentially what I want to do is show 5 of these rows in a table (in html), with a certain row (e.g. where id=5) in the middle and have the two rows above and below it (in the correct order). This will be like a score board but only showing the user's score with the two above and two below.
E.g. say the user is id=5, I want to show
+---+-------+------+
|id | level |score |
+---+-------+------+
| 3 | 1 | 35 |
| 1 | 1 | 40 |
| 5 | 1 | 45 |
| 7 | 1 | 50 |
| 8 | 1 | 55 |
I am wondering does anyone know a way of doing this in php?
Basically
//select query output is in while loop
//get a certain row of the loop
//get the two rows above it and two rows below it
One method uses a lot of variables:
select t.*
from (select t.*,
lag(id, 1) over (order by score) as prev_id,
lag(id, 2) over (order by score) as prev_id2,
lead(id, 1) over (order by score) as next_id,
lead(id, 2) over (order by score) as next_id2
from t
) t
where 5 in (prev_id, prev_id2, next_id, next_id2, id)
order by score;
An alternative method is something like this:
(select t.*
from t
where t.score <= (select t2.score from t t2 where t2.id = 5)
order by score desc
limit 3
) union all
(select t.*
from t
where t.score > (select t2.score from t t2 where t2.id = 5)
order by score
limit 2
)
order by score;
This exactly syntax may not work in all databases, but the idea can easily be translated in whatever dialect of SQL. This also assumes that the scores are unique.

Mysql select UNIQUE row on column

I have a table as following:(Ex)
id | vid | time
------------------------
1 | 4 | 1333635317
2 | 4 | 1333635323
3 | 2 | 1333635336
4 | 4 | 1333635343
5 | 5 | 1333635349
I want to be just a row (the last row [ID: 4]) of the same rows[id:1,2,4], how it will output the query?
I mean, as a result of these:
id | vid | time
------------------------
3 | 2 | 1333635336
4 | 4 | 1333635343
5 | 5 | 1333635349
What do i do?
i trying it as:
SELECT * from tbale as t1 where vid = 4 GROUP BY vid ORDER BY id DESC
but doesn't work ORDER BY in my query.
Get the max time per vid and use in to get those rows from the table.
select * from tablename
where (vid,time) in (select vid,max(time)
from tablename
group by vid)
order by id

Php/mysql ranking system - Placement inside a result set ordered by column

In a blog-like website, all the users can "star" a news (= bookmark it, mark it as "favourite").
I have a mysql table for stats.
table_news_stats
id_news
total_stars (int) //Total number of users who starred this news
placement (int)
The placement field is intuitive: if you order all the news by the total_stars field you get each news placement. So, the news with most stars will be number 1, and so on.
So, suppose I have 700 records in my table_news_stats, and for each one I have the id and the total_stars count, how can I update the placement field automatically for each record? Which query is faster/better?
Example of the table_news_stats content:
First record (A):
1-3654-?
Second record (B):
2-2456-?
Third record (C):
3-8654-?
If you order the record by stars count:
the sequence of records is C - A - B
So... the result will be:
First record (A):
1-3654-2
Second record (B):
2-2456-3
Third record (C):
3-8654-1
Clarification:
why would I ever need the placement field at all?
It's pretty simple... the placement field will be populated by a cronjob the first day of every month. Basically it will provide a 'snapshot' of the rank of each news in terms of popularity (as it was at the beginning of the current month). As a consequence, thanks to the placement field, I will have the following information:
"The 1st day of this month the 'top starred' news list was like this:
1- News C
2- NewsA
3- News B "
Then, with a query "SELECT * FROM table_news_stats ORDER BY total_stars DESC" I can obtain the new ranking (in real-time).
As a consequence, I will have the following information:
"At the time the page is loaded, the 'top starred' news list is like this:
1- News A
2- News C
3- News B "
Finally, by comparing the two rankings, I obtain the last piece of information:
"News A has gained a position" +1
"News C has lost a position" -1
"News B has no change in position" +0
If there is a better way of doing this, let me know.
I guess you don't need to update the table just:
SELECT *
FROM table_news_stats
ORDER BY total_stars DESC
But if you want to know the place of each one you can:
SELECT *, IF(#idx IS NULL,#idx:= 1,#idx:= #idx+1)
FROM table_news_stats
ORDER BY total_stars DESC
And if you still need to update something like:
UPDATE table_news_stats
SET placement = FIND_IN_SET(id_news,(SELECT GROUP_CONCAT(t.id_news) FROM (SELECT id_news
FROM table_news_stats
ORDER BY total_stars DESC) t ))
SQLFiddle
Consider the following
mysql> select * from test ;
+------+-------------+-----------+
| id | total_stars | placement |
+------+-------------+-----------+
| 1 | 3 | 0 |
| 2 | 6 | 0 |
| 3 | 7 | 0 |
| 4 | 2 | 0 |
| 5 | 9 | 0 |
| 6 | 2 | 0 |
| 7 | 1 | 0 |
+------+-------------+-----------+
Now using the following you can update the placement as
update test t1 join
(
select *,
#rn:= if(#prev = total_stars,#rn,#rn+1) as rank ,
#prev:= total_stars
from test,(select #rn:=0,#prev:=0)r
order by total_stars desc
)t2
on t2.id = t1.id
set t1.placement = t2.rank ;
mysql> select * from test order by placement ;
+------+-------------+-----------+
| id | total_stars | placement |
+------+-------------+-----------+
| 5 | 9 | 1 |
| 3 | 7 | 2 |
| 2 | 6 | 3 |
| 1 | 3 | 4 |
| 4 | 2 | 5 |
| 6 | 2 | 5 |
| 7 | 1 | 6 |
+------+-------------+-----------+
Note that in case of tie will have the same placement.

MySQL: Link answers to comments, grouped and limited

I got the following MySQL table:
+----+--------+------+
| id | answer | type |
+----+--------+------+
>| 1 | -1 | 1 |
| 2 | 1 | 2 |
| 3 | 1 | 1 |
>| 4 | -1 | 2 |
| 5 | 4 | 2 |
| 6 | 4 | 1 |
>| 7 | -1 | 1 |
| 8 | 7 | 2 |
>| 9 | -1 | 2 |
>| 10 | -1 | 1 |
>| 11 | -1 | 2 |
+----+--------+------+
> = original comment
The entries with answer = -1 are the original comments.
The entries with answer != -1 are answers to the comment with the respective id.
Furthermore there are types of comments (in this case 1 or 2).
Now I want to retrieve the original comments (for a specified type and a specified limit) and their answers (type and limit do not matter). Further it would be great to group the result by the two types (again, only the original comment's type matters for grouping).
A query result for type=1 and limit=2 should look like that (not grouped yet):
+----+--------+------+
| id | answer | type |
+----+--------+------+
>| 1 | -1 | 1 |
| 2 | 1 | 2 |
| 3 | 1 | 1 |
>| 7 | -1 | 1 |
| 8 | 7 | 2 |
+----+--------+------+
I have tried several kinds of queries for hours now, can I implement it without a procedure? What would the procedure look like?
I would appreciate your help a lot.
Use a subquery to get 2 original comments of type-1 first, then join the table again to get both original comments and responses.
select b.*
from (
select id
from answers
where type = 1 and answer = -1
limit 2) a
join answers b on a.id = b.id or a.id = b.answer;
fiddle
To select 2 original comments of each type, you'll need to use user-defined-variable to index each original comment. The following code indexes the first original comment as 1, the second one as 2, and so on, then resets to 1 when the type changes. Finally in the final where statement filter out indices greater than 2.
select b.*, a.idx
from (
select id, #idx:=if(#type=a.type,#idx+1,1) idx, #type:=a.type
from (select id, type from answers2 where answer is null order by type) a
join (select #type:=null, #idx:=null) b) a
join answers2 b on a.id = b.id or a.id = b.answer
where a.idx <= 2;
fiddle
Store it as a separate column or even a different table if you are worried about too much data duplication. You are overthinking it.

How do I compare 2 tables looking for missing items

I have two tables one that contains a huge list of items and another that trading for those items.
Here are examples tables:
The main table
| ID | TITLE | STATUS | TRADE |
-------------------------------
| 1 | test1 | 1 | 1 |
| 2 | test2 | 1 | 1 |
| 3 | test3 | 1 | 0 |
| 4 | test4 | 0 | 1 |
The trade table
| ID | TRADER | ITEM | URL |
------------------------------------------------------
| 1 | 2 | 1 | HTTP://www.test.com/itemOne |
| 2 | 5 | 3 | HTTP://www.test.com/itemThree |
| 3 | 5 | 4 | HTTP://www.test.com/itemFour |
Say I want to have a list of all the items that are not being traded by trader 5 and have a status of 1. So when trader 5 comes to the site they will be able to select the remaining items to trade.
Here is what I have tried:
$sql = "SELECT m.id, m.title
FROM main AS m, trade AS t
WHERE m.trade >= 1 && m.status = 1 &&
t.trader <>". mysql_real_escape_string($traderID);
This code just doesn't work. Any ideas on this?
It is not clear to me what column in Trades is an FK to Main. Below, I have assumed it is the Item column:
select m.id, m.title
from Main m
where not exists (
select *
from trade
where m.id = item
and trader = 5
)
and m.status = 1
Try this:
SELECT id, title FROM main
WHERE status = 1 AND id NOT IN
(SELECT item FROM trade WHERE trader = 5);
This will grab a list of every title in main with a status of 1, but limit the items based on a subquery which gets a list of ids already traded by trader 5 (i.e. items "not in" the list of items returned as having been traded by trader 5).
I'll leave it to you to update the query to be parameterized as needed.
Note that I'm assuming that item in trade is a foreign key to the id field in main, since you didn't specify it.
