EDIT: My function was broken, with the /n in it. Thanks woofmeow for leading me to question my function!
I am new to programming. I have been trying my best and I have learned a lot the past few months (a bunch here!) but I am stumped.
I have a PHP script that calls from another PHP script and I cannot get the code to actually run. It used to run, then I changed some things and didn't save the changes, I'm not sure what I did. I know, I know, rookie mistake(I learned from it!). The Javascript shows up fine on view page source but doesn't run anymore.
Here is the page source, maybe it is that simple:
<script type="text/javascript">
function delete_user(user_id)
{if (confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this user?" + "\nThere's really no going back!")) {window.location = "delete_user.php?user_id=" + user_id;}}</script>
Here is the PHP:
The show_users script sends this into the viewer:
$delete_user_script = <<<EOD
function delete_user(user_id)
{
if (confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this user?"
+ "\nThere's really no going back!"))
{
window.location = "delete_user.php?user_id=" + user_id;
}
}
EOD;
The PHP in the HTML was NOT changed from when it was working:
<?php
while ($user = mysql_fetch_array($result))
{
$user_row = sprintf("<li><a href='show_user.php?user_id=%d'>%s %s</a>(<a href='mailto:%s'>%s</a>)<a href='javascript:delete_user(%d);'><img class='delete_user' src='../images/delete.png' width='15' /></a></li>",
$user['user_id'],
$user['first_name'],
$user['last_name'],
$user['email'],
$user['email'],
$user['user_id']);
echo $user_row;
}
?>
And finally, the viewing script that gives us our page source (Note: $embedded_javascript is $delete_user_script):
if (!is_null($embedded_javascript))
{
echo '<script type="text/javascript">' . $embedded_javascript . '</script>';
}
When I mouse over the image to delete the user, it still shows the correct script link ("Javascript:delete_user(%d)", where %d is the user_id) but it's like the function isn't defined anymore, nothing happens. Any ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Basically your if statement is wrong (even in the $delete_user_script variable). Since it is starting on a new line the interpreter will assume a ; at the end of it and thus your if statement breaks.
Your function has this
if (confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this user?"
+ "\nThere's really no going back!"))
It should be this way
if (confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this user?" + "\nThere's really no going back!"))
Sometimes its just a teeny weeny mistake. Hope that helps :)
EDIT 1: this was an error in the origianally posted question in the javascript and php code. Now its been edited to reflect that the if is not broken.
EDIT 2: I have been told this helped to solve the problem so I'll keep this question here. Hope it helps others too.
PS: If someone wants this removed let me know.
Try this instead of what you have now in your script:
$delete_user_script = "".
"function delete_user(user_id)
{
if (confirm(\"Are you sure you want to delete this user?\" + \"\\nThere's really no going back!\"))
{
window.location = \"delete_user.php?user_id=\" + user_id;
}
}";

So... I've been trying to use a JQuery post requests to insert data in my database for 2 days and can't make it work, and don't have any idea why... I bet someone already faced this issue too, so I'm here looking for this person :)
Here's the issue:
Into the html file, the part with JQuery (it's on a click event):
var eventData;
eventData = {
title: title,
start: start,
end: end
};
$.post("add.php", eventData);
The add.php file:
$con = mysqli_connect("localhost", "root", "", "jqcalendar" );
$title = $_POST['title'];
$start = $_POST['start'];
$end = $_POST['end'];
mysqli_query($con, "INSERT INTO jqcalendar(title,start,end) VALUES({$title},{$start},{$end})");
mysqli_close($con);
Can't make this thing work, already tried putting echoes but it seems the php file isn't even being executed by the $.post command... If someone could help I'd really really appreciate it...
EDIT:
the title, start and end are strings previously defined with the "" !
I used the console inspection and got this error at the same line as the
$.post:
$.fullCalendar.select # index.html:35
You have to use quotes when you are specifying the value in a javascript object (otherthan for numbers).
eventData = {
title: "title",
start: "start",
end: "end"
};
Tips
Also, you can see whether there's an error with your javascript part by inspecting element. Right click and click inspect/inspect element. Then go to the console. You will see errors there if there's any once you execute the javascript part.
Also when debugging javascript part, you can use console.log() to see the values of the variables
Figured it out, the problem is within the variables "start" and "end", they're composite date type ISO8601, what was causing trouble when received for inserting into database... thank you all for your time, but now the problem is converting this date object to a custom String...
While working on something non-development related, I noticed something interested while on answers.com. I copied and pasted some text from an answer, and noticed that along with my answer I got some text that I didn't copy. After looking into it some more, it seems that if you copy 8 or more words from anywhere on the site, it adds some text when you paste it. For instance, if I go to a page on the site and copy 8 words or more, and then paste that somewhere, you will get something like:
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting
different results.

My questions is, does anyone know how that is done?! I've looked into the code a bit, but haven't found anything giving me any clues :) Thanks!
P.S. Yes, that page was the one I was viewing when I noticed this :)
function addText() {
var body_element = document.body;
var selection = window.getSelection();
var extraText = "<br /><br />some extra info here";
var copytext = selection + extraText;
var newdiv = document.createElement('div');
newdiv.setAttribute('style','position:absolute;left:-99999px;')
newdiv.innerHTML = copytext;
body_element.appendChild(newdiv);
selection.selectAllChildren(newdiv);
window.setTimeout(function() {
body_element.removeChild(newdiv);
},0);
}
document.oncopy = addText;

I've got a page with an iframe. The iframe is using jquery.scrollTo to detect the audio playback time and keep the contents, lyrics for example, linked to the right point in the audio.
Each line of text is being pulled from a mysql table. What I'm trying to do is to allow the user to click on a line in the <iframe> and have the audio in the parent page play at that point. Here's the code that grabs the times, which exists after the jquery that handles the other audio functions:
<?php
include 'mysqlt.php';
$entries=mysql_query("SELECT * FROM `database`.`table`") or die(mysql_error());
while ($ent = mysql_fetch_object($entries)) {
$segment = $ent->index;
$starttime = $ent->time;
$nextline = $ent->time2;
$length = ($nextline - $starttime); ?>
That same information is also duplicated in the iframe source page along with the individual lines of lyrics. The jquery that uses this info follows:
$("#iframe_id").contents().find("#button_in_iframe<?php echo $segment;?>").bind("click", function(){
audioplayer.currentTime = <?php echo $time;?>;
audioplayer.play();
}
<?php } ?>
This second part loops, echoed once for each each potential line in the iframe that can be clicked. #button_in_iframe<?php echo $segment;?> ends up as something like #button_in_iframe23 for the 23rd line.
I've got jquery loaded up in both the parent and the iframe. As far as I can tell, the syntax is what it should be. If I remove this bit of code, everything works normally. if it's in there, the basic audio functions on the normal controls I have set stop working. So this is not only not working, but it's causing everything else associated with the audio tag's controls to stop working as well. I know that any small error in the audio controls' jquery is enough to make it stop working, but in this case I'm not sure where the problem is.
Thanks in advance for any insights anyone might be able to offer.
update:
I've got it so it no longer crashes the audio tag. Now it's more an issue of the iframe's item not triggering an event. Here's the code now:
$('#iframe_id').contents().find("button.loop2").bind("click", function() {
alert ("test");
});
I'm not getting any console errors except for a Google Maps imbedded in the page in another location. When i click the <button> with class loop2 in the iframe, all of which exist, nothing's happening. That seems to be the root of the problem as it was earlier.
I figured out how to do it. I've set the loop on the parent to read as follows:
play<?php echo $segment; ?> = function(){
sfx.currentTime = sounds.getCueById(id).startTime;
sfx.play();
};
Then in the iframe's page, I've told each button to call parent.play<?php echo $segment;?>();
I'm not sure why finding the tags in the iframe didn't work, but no matter. This get's the job done.
Thanks, shanabus, for all the suggestions.
Would it work to use media cues?
Example:
var sfx = new Audio('sfx.wav');
var sounds = a.addTextTrack('metadata');
// add sounds we care about
sounds.addCue(new TextTrackCue('dog bark', 12.783, 13.612, '', '', '', true));
sounds.addCue(new TextTrackCue('kitten mew', 13.612, 15.091, '', '', '', true));
function playSound(id) {
sfx.currentTime = sounds.getCueById(id).startTime;
sfx.play();
}
You can find a better definition of the spec half way down the page here - http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec/Overview.html
So in your case, maybe something like:
$("#iframe_id").contents().find("#button_in_iframe<?php echo $segment;?>").bind("click", function(){
sounds.addCue(new TextTrackCue('<?php echo $segment; ?>', <?php echo $starttime; ?>, <?php echo ($starttime + $length); ?>, '', '', '', true));
var id = '<?php echo $segment; ?>';
sfx.currentTime = sounds.getCueById(id).startTime;
sfx.play();
}
Or maybe separate your logic into two loops. One for building the cues, then one for building/binding the click events.
Hope this helps!
I'm still new to php and working my way around it but i'm stuck at the following piece:
code for deleting a row in my table
i have a link directing towards this piece of my script. i run through the first half just fine but when i press on submit and try to execute my delete query it won't go to my second if statement let alone get to the delete query.
$pgd is the page id
my hunch is there is problem with the action in the form i'm building after my while statement
forgive me for the wierd formatting of my msg but its 2am and very tired, i promise to format my questions in the future better! any help is appreciated
edit: ok other then the obvious mistake of missing method=post #.#;
edit:
hey everyone,
first of all, i'd like to thank everyone for their response.
i just started coding in php last weekend so forgive my messy codes. the code is still running locally and my main goal was to finish the functions and then work on securing my code.
now back to the issue, i'm sorry if i was vague about my problem. i'll try to reiterate it.
my issue isn´t selecting an item i want to delete, the issue is that it won´t get to the 2nd if statement.
Re-edit:
this time with my current code:
if($_GET['delete'] == "y")
{
//content hier verwijderen
$sqlcont1="SELECT * FROM content where id ='".$_GET['id']."'";
echo $sqlcont1;
$resultcont1 = mysql_query($sqlcont1) or die (include 'oops.php');
while($rowcont1= mysql_fetch_array($resultcont1)){
echo '<form class="niceforms" action="?pg='.$pgd.'&delete=y&remove=y&id='.$_GET['id'].'" method="post">';
echo '<h1>'.$rowcont1['Titel'].'</h1>';
echo '<p>'.$rowcont1['Content'].'</p>';
echo '<input type="submit" value="Delete article">';
echo '</form>';
}
if($_GET['remove']=="y"){
echo 'rararara';
$id=$_GET['id'];
$sqlrem="DELETE FROM content WHERE id="$id;
echo $sqlrem;
mysql_query($sqlrem);
}
}
echoing $sqlrem gives me the following now:
DELETE FROM content WHERE id=8
that being my current code, i get in to the second IF statement but now to get it to delete!
#everyone:
ok maybe thinking out loud or following my steps worked but the code works, i know its very messy and it needs fine tuning. i'd like to thank everyone for their help and feedback. i'm liking this and you'll probably see me alot more often with nubby questions and messy codes with no escapes :(
First of all, you have SQL injection vulnerability in your script. Anyone can add some string that will be attached to your query, possibly altering it in a way that can make almost anything with the data from your database.
Escape your values with one of anti-SQL-injection methods. Read more for example on php.net/manual/en/function.mysql-query.php
To the point...
Your deletion code will be executed only if you invoke URL with two params (remove and delete set to y. That means your URL should look similar to something.php?delete=y&remove=y. Maybe you just did not spot it.
Please give details about any errors that occured and tell me whether the above mentioned solution helped.
mysql_fetch_array() returns an array
your while statement acts as an if, and does not iterate thru the array returned as you think it does
you need something like
$all_rows = mysql_fetch_array($result);
foreach ($all_rows as $row) {
$sql = "delete from table where id = " . $row['id'];
}
It looks to me like you're mixing two forms together here: you're wanting to see if you went to the delete row form (the first few lines), and you're trying to present the delete row form (the while loop.) I would break these two things apart. Have a page that simply displays your forms for row deletes, and another page that processes those requests. And another page that brings you to the delete rows page.
For now, just echo all the values you're expecting to receive in $_GET[] and see if they are what you expect them to be.
You have a lot of problems in that script alone, so just to make things easier (considering you uploaded a pic), put an
echo $sqlrem;
in your second if statement, see if the query is displayed. If not, it means it doesn't even get to that part of code, if it gets displayed, copy it and run it in phpmyadmin. That should output a more coherent error message. Tell us what that is and we'll work it through.
I also noticed that your DELETE SQL query might have an issue. If your $pgd' id is a integer, you shouldn't include the ' single quote, that is for string only.
**Correction**
$sqlrem = "DELETE FROM content WHERE id = " . controw1['id'];
EDIT
Anyway, just to help out everyone, I typed out his code for easier viewing.
I think his error is $rowcont1['Tilel'] --> that might caused PHP to have an error because that column doesn't exist. I assumed, it should be `Title' causing an typo error.
if(_$GET['delete'] == "y") {
$sqlcont1 = "SELECT * FROM content where id ='" . $_GET['id'] . "'";
$resultcont1 = mysql_query($sqlcont1) or die (include 'oops.php');
while ($rowcont1 = mysql_fetch_array($resultcont1)) {
echo '<form class = "niceforms" action = "?pg=' .$pgd . '&delete=y&remove=y">';
echo '<h1>' . $rowcont1['Title'] . '<h1>'; // <-- error here
echo '<p>' . $rowcont1['Content'] . '</p>';
echo '<input type = "submit" value = "Delete article">';
echo '</form>';
}
if ($_GET['remove'] == "y"){
$sqlrem = "DELETE FROM content WHERE id = " . $rowcont1['id'];
mysql_query ($sqlrem);
}
}
I have a strange problem with my cake (cake_1.2.0.7296-rc2).
My start()-action runs twice, under certain circumstances, even though only one request is made.
The triggers seem to be :
- loading an object like: $this->Questionnaire->read(null, $questionnaire_id);
- accessing $this-data
If I disable the call to loadAvertisement() from the start()-action, this does not happen.
If I disable the two calls inside loadAdvertisement():
$questionnaire = $this->Questionnaire->read(null, $questionnaire_id);
$question = $this->Questionnaire->Question->read(null, $question_id);
... then it doesn't happen either.
Why?
See my code below, the Controller is "questionnaires_controller".
function checkValidQuestionnaire($id)
{
$this->layout = 'questionnaire_frontend_layout';
if (!$id)
{
$id = $this->Session->read('Questionnaire.id');
}
if ($id)
{
$this->data = $this->Questionnaire->read(null, $id);
//echo "from ".$questionnaire['Questionnaire']['validFrom']." ".date("y.m.d");
//echo " - to ".$questionnaire['Questionnaire']['validTo']." ".date("y.m.d");
if ($this->data['Questionnaire']['isPublished'] != 1
//|| $this->data['Questionnaire']['validTo'] < date("y.m.d")
//|| $this->data['Questionnaire']['validTo'] < date("y.m.d")
)
{
$id = 0;
$this->flash(__('Ungültiges Quiz. Weiter zum Archiv...', true), array('action'=>'archive'));
}
}
else
{
$this->flash(__('Invalid Questionnaire', true), array('action'=>'intro'));
}
return $id;
}
function start($id = null) {
$this->log("start");
$id = $this->checkValidQuestionnaire($id);
//$questionnaire = $this->Questionnaire->read(null, $id);
$this->set('questionnaire', $this->data);
// reset flow-controlling session vars
$this->Session->write('Questionnaire',array('id' => $id));
$this->Session->write('Questionnaire'.$id.'currQuestion', null);
$this->Session->write('Questionnaire'.$id.'lastAnsweredQuestion', null);
$this->Session->write('Questionnaire'.$id.'correctAnswersNum', null);
$this->loadAdvertisement($id, 0);
$this->Session->write('Questionnaire'.$id.'previewMode', $this->params['named']['preview_mode']);
if (!$this->Session->read('Questionnaire'.$id.'previewMode'))
{
$questionnaire['Questionnaire']['participiantStartCount']++;
$this->Questionnaire->save($questionnaire);
}
}
function loadAdvertisement($questionnaire_id, $question_id)
{
//$questionnaire = array();
$questionnaire = $this->Questionnaire->read(null, $questionnaire_id);
//$question = array();
$question = $this->Questionnaire->Question->read(null, $question_id);
if (isset($question['Question']['advertisement_id']) && $question['Question']['advertisement_id'] > 0)
{
$this->set('advertisement', $this->Questionnaire->Question->Advertisement->read(null, $question['Question']['advertisement_id']));
}
else if (isset($questionnaire['Questionnaire']['advertisement_id']) && $questionnaire['Questionnaire']['advertisement_id'] > 0)
{
$this->set('advertisement', $this->Questionnaire->Question->Advertisement->read(null, $questionnaire['Questionnaire']['advertisement_id']));
}
}
I really don't understand this... it don't think it's meant to be this way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
Regards,
Stu
Check your layout for non-existent links, for example a misconfigured link to favicon.ico will cause the controller action to be triggered for a second time. Make sure favicon.ico points towards the webroot rather than the local directory, or else requests will be generated for /controller/action/favicon.ico rather than /favicon.ico - and thus trigger your action.
This can also happen with images, stylesheets and javascript includes.
To counter check the $id is an int, then check to ensure $id exists as a primary key in the database before progressing on to any functionality.
For me it was a JS issue.
Take care of wrap function with jQuery that re-execute JS in wrapped content!
You might want to try and find out where it comes from using the debug_print_backtrace() function. (http://nl.php.net/manual/en/function.debug-print-backtrace.php
Had the same problem, with a certain action randomly running 2-3 times. I tracked down two causes:
Firefox add-on Yslow was set to load automatically from it's Preferences, causing pages to reload when using F5 (not when loading the page from the browser's address bar and pressing Enter).
I had a faulty css style declaration within the options of a $html->link(); in some cases it would end up as background-image: url('');, which caused a rerun also. Setting the style for the link to background-image: none; when no image was available fixed things for me.
Hope this helps. I know this is quite an old post, but as it comes up pretty high in Google when searching for this problem, I thought it might help others by still posting.
Good luck

I had a problem like this last week.
Two possible reasons
Faulty routes (DO check your routes configuration)
Faulty AppController. I add loads of stuff into AppController, especially to beforeFilter() and beforeRender() so you might want to check those out also.
One more thing, are where are you setting the Questioneer.id in your Session? Perhaps that's the problem?
Yes, it occurs when there is a broken link in the web page. Each browser deals with it variously (Firefox calls it 2x). I tested it, there is no difference in CakePHP v1.3 and v2.2.1. To find out who the culprit is, add this line to the code, and then open the second generated file in you www folder:
file_put_contents("log-" . date("Hms") . ".txt", $this->params['pass'] ); // CakePHP v1.3
file_put_contents("log-" . date("Hms") . ".txt", $this->request['pass'] ); //CakePHP v2.2.1
PS: First I blame jQuery for it. But in the end it was forgotten image for AJAX loading in 3rd part script.
I had the same problem in chrome, I disabled my 'HTML Validator' add on. Which was loading the page twice
I was having a similar issue, the problem seemed to be isolated to case-insensitivity on the endpoint.
ie:
http://server/Questionnaires/loadAvertisement -vs-
http://server/questionnaires/loadavertisement
When calling the proper-cased endpoint, the method ran once -whereas the lower-cased ran twice. The problem was occurring sporadically -happening on one controller, but not on another (essentially the same logic, no additional components etc.). I couldn't confirm, but believe the fault to be of the browser -not the CakePHP itself.
My workaround was assuring that every endpoint link was proper-cased. To go even further, I added common case-variants to the Route's configuration:
app/config/routes.php
<?php
// other routes..
$instructions = ['controller'=>'Questionnaires','action'=>'loadAvertisement'];
Router::connect('/questionnaires/loadavertisement', $instructions);
Router::connect('/QUESTIONNARIES/LOADADVERTISEMENT', $instructions);
// ..etc
If you miss <something>, for example a View, Cake will trigger a missing <something> error and it will try to render its Error View. Therefore, AppController will be called twice. If you resolve the missing issue, AppController is called once.
