HTML Editable P Which updates MySQL DB - php

I would like to implement an editable "p" element which will update a corresponding table of a database after the user presses enter or is done editing the information (Similar to how the newest version of phpmyadmin works.)
I would like to avoid using javascript and use strictly php/html.
Does anyone know how can be done or could point me in the direction of a tutorial or site discussing this topic?

It's not possible to do what you'd like to do without some Javascript, unless you're fine with using traditional HTML forms and requesting an entirely new page for every update.
"AJAX" is the technique being applied in phpMyAdmin (and anywhere you see "live" changes, without the page being refreshed.
Additionally, paragraph (<p/>) elements aren't editable input fields.

how about using AngularJS and extending the following to write back to the DB:

Auto-update Posts without refreshing

I'm currently only using PHP to take user submissions, put them in a database, and echo them out on a page using SQL to select from a table, such as comments. I need a system that will automatically update comments without refreshing the page like on YouTube. The less the user has to manually update, the better.
I want it to work pretty much exactly how YouTube and Twitter function, where it'll say "x NEW COMMENT(s)" and clicking that updates everything.
My teacher recommended a JQuery function, but I don't have any background in that language so I don't know where to begin looking.
I'm at a complete impasse. I will update this if you guys need additional information to aid in my search.
You are looking for AJAX
You will need a HTML page with jQuery/AJAX that calls another PHP page. In that PHP page you do the DB request and then ideally return the data as JSON so that your frontend part can display it to the user.
As every one says, AJAX is the way. You can find a simple blog I did on it here.

Need advice on updating a database from a form

I am not sure how to word the question because I don't really know what exactly I'm even asking for. Basically I have built a small sales portal that puts info in a database and then spits it back out in various ways. Occasionally the records need to be updated, but I need a way to update them from the web page where the records are displayed (without going to a completely different page) so that the sales people do not have to go into the database to change the records. I know how to use the UPDATE function with PHP, what I would like to do is have an "Edit" button at the end of each row and have the information become changeable when the button is clicked. What programming language would I need to do this in? How would that code be structured? I am really only familiar with PHP, HTML, and CSS.
Thanks for your help!
You're going to need javascript to handle the form fields the way you mentioned.
Each record row wil have the original value and a hidden input
Javascript will hide the original value and show the input
You could either have a save button at the end of each record row or a master "save all" button". Having multiple at the end of each record will be easier but from a users point of view maybe a bit cumbersome.
Use AJAX to send the updated data to the server - this should be handled in the "save record" javascript function.
Then you'll need PHP or some other server side language to actually update the record.

Editing information from a MYSQL database from website frontend.

I wonder is someone can help, I'm building a website, which is driven from a database. It will consist of user submitted information.
Currently all the information is pulled from a record in the database and is being output via a PHP echo, what i would like too do is add a feature that would allow me to edit the information if incorrect from the websites front end.
I have seen many websites have some form of edit icon next to information in there databases, when clicking this icon the echoed text changes from text to a text field and you are able to update the field being echoed from the database.
Im a designer so have limited knowledge of how functionality for this kinda feature might work.
please could anyone let me know how something like this might be achieved.
many thanks.
You would need to build some kind of javascript functionality to allow the in-place editing of those data bits. One possible solution is a jQuery plugin like jEditable.
Then you need to build a server-side script in something like PHP or ruby where it would take the submitted information and update the database.
well the process is the same for the front-end and back-end. it depends whether you want you build a password protected editable forms or just editable for everyone.
One way you can do this is
echo your information into text inputs
give them a css class that removes the border and makes it transparent
make it readonly(so someone couldnt tab into it and change it)
add a javascript onclick event that changes the class to a normal
text box that is not readonly
add a javascript onchange event that uses ajax to save the new
information into the database when they are done typing, or press enter
after the ajax is done turn the text box back to the first css class
EDIT also add a onblur event that changes it back as well
you could even change the cursor for the text input to a pointer instead of the default (text) cursor so that is looks like you can click on it.
.
now html5 has contenteditable attribute which you can set for elements
simple example:

Is there a way I can change where a PHP page selects from a MYSQL database by using a form?

I have a website and I want to make it easier for someone to change certain information being shown without them having to edit the HTML/PHP and using FTP.
At the moment I have this information in a php file which is included in the MYSQL query.
It would be a lot easier if this was done using a form, say a text field where a person can type the table name and it updates on the main page and starts displaying that table instead.
Sorry if I haven't explained this well. :(
I have a good news for you.
Every php/mysql-driven site in the world is made this exact way - to edit site contents using HTML form.
Even first PHP version name was PHP/FI, stands for Form Interpreter.
Even better, a site user doesn't have to deal with mysql - it's all being done in PHP. No need to type table names into form field - all table names already written in PHP code.
Usual PHP application being connected to just one mysql database - so, no need to choose.
As for the tables, it's being done this way: a user selects some human-readable matter, like "Latest news" and being redirected to the PHP script called, say, news.php. this script runs a query for the news table in the database and outputs some HTML formatted news highlights!
Even more, you don't even need to program! There are plenty of ready-made programs, such as Wordpress
store what you want to be editable in a mysql text field.
remove tags you dont want him to see
in the form echo the editable information in a textarea
have him edit
add tags
update the mysql
note depending on the users knowledge depends on how many tags you would like to remove/add. the less per a field the easier.
on more complicated things i like to have the person log in. if he has permission then all the editable fields have an edit button. if he clicks it it goes to a page with a form that he can use to edit that 1 field

Help changing content on the page using both php and javascript

So I am trying to have a dynamic tabs kind of thing using both php and javascript. To make it much easier to understand, remember the two choices on facebook (Recent news and most recent) or something like that, when you click on one of them it just changes the content that you see in the middle without updating the page. i know how to delete the content in a div for example, but after deleting the content in the div (innerHTML = "") I want to populate it with the option chosen from the database.
So let's say I have an option (all) and an option (only this)
The default is all so when I run the page, I will just get all. However, if I click on only this, it will clear the div "my header" and will replace the content with the latest content from the database (database) and display it.
For that I need both php and javascript, is there a sample or an easy way to do this before i start digging around.
((Sorry if is not clear but the facebook example should be clear enough))
Whatyou are looking for a is AJAX/PHP approach.
Clicking on the tab
The current content gets removed. This is possible because it has a unique "id" attribute in the HTML code
The server is asked for the new content. This is the AJAX request that will be triggered after/while/... the content is removed.
The server sends back the code. This can be HTML, JSON, XML or similar.
You script recieves the answer, may "do" something with it (like some parsing or similar)
The content will be placed on the page (again, this is possible due to an unique "id"
This is basically the way it is done.
Check out the different JavaScript frameworks. They all come with nice AJAX support:
jQuery
MooTools
dojo
Prototype
And of course, SO is also a nice place to look at: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/ajax+php
What you're talking about is ajax.
I would suggest a javascript library to help leverage this, like jquery.
It can be as cool as
$.post('serverScript.php',
function(data) {
$('#idOfDivToUpdate').html(data); //shove script data into div
},'html' );
tutorial.
