I was following the guide written here Run Bash Command from PHP
and I have /var/www/test.php

chdir('/home/');
$output = shell_exec('./test.sh');
echo "<pre>$output</pre>";
chdir($old_path); ?>
and located by using sudo nano /home/test.sh
#/bin/bash
mystring="Hello World"
echo "$mystring"
yet running locally http://localhost/test.php I get a blank page.
I can run the file from the terminal, and I can run shell_exec('ls') successfully as php script, can anyone see what I am doing wrong please?
Ok problem was resolved after a few typos and permissions not being set, but main problem it would seem is the getcwd() does not run on my OS locally or on the server... both Ubuntu 12.04
So for anyone else stuck with problems be sure to:
Check the File can be executed via the terminal, if not run chmod +x /file/location/test.sh
next check what directory you are in and moving to using the echo shell_exec('pwd')
If you are not moving directory then try replacing the getcwd() with dirname(__FILE__);
This resolved the issues for me :) now to ty passing variables into that script from the php page!! Many thanks for all your help everyone.

I've been unable to run php scripts that I need to use to start and stop webcam services that run on the local machine with the scripts. I can find nothing in the logs to indicate why the script doesn't' work.
I confess to being severely handicapped regarding PHP, especially server-side scripting.
The environment is Debian Jesse running Nginx with all required SSH and PHP modules installed
I have added www-data to the sudoers file with:
www-data ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /var/www/html/start_webcam.sh
Enabled the $PATH environment for www-data at:
/etc/php5/fpm/pool.d/www.conf
The shell script resides in the .../html directory and runs from the terminal with no issues.
This is the code for both the php and shell scripts:
start_webcam.php:

echo exec('sudo bash /var/www/html/aspirebox/start_webcam.sh 2>&1, $output');
print_r($output);
?>
The $output and print_r stuff is there because it was the last thing I tried based on a post I found out here somewhere.

according to Passing Variables to shell_exec()? you should change your code like this:

$output = exec('/var/www/html/aspirebox/start_webcam.sh 2>&1 ');
print_r($output);
?>
and let your bash script execute as all (no need to sudo bash):
chmod a+x /var/www/html/aspirebox/start_webcam.sh

I worked through getting the path straight for the directory the shell script runs in, and the correct path to run "service".
All I have now is to figure out why I'm getting "Failed to start motion.service: Access denied"
I've given www-data permission to run the script without a password on sudoers, have to keep digging.

so I have read about 10 answers and everyone seems to suggest ideas which for some reason don't work.
i am trying to execute a simple command line which is "svn update" but it is not working and it returns NULL
so i have tried trial and error the way and for now this is what i can say;
i have tried several commands like
<?php
exec ("cmd /c ping 127.0.0.1 -n 1 > results.txt ");
?>
and
<?php
exec ("cmd /c chdir > results.txt ");
?>
and both work.. infact chdir says the exact position where the php file executing the line is stored on the pc..
so the problem now is, why do some commands like this:
<?php
exec ("cmd /c dir > results.txt ");
?>
don't work? this results and empty value even though inside the folder i have several files and directories.
and why if i use the command prompt to move into the folder where the php file is store and type svn update it works and doing
<?php
exec ("cmd /c svn update > results.txt ");
?>
return a NULL?
any help is really appreciated.
it feels like i have some restrictions dued to the configuration setup because when i try in local using apache i can get most of the commands to work (shell_exec, system, exec, even without the cmd /c)

this is what i did:
first check exactly what username is running for the specific website.. to do so do:

exec('cmd /c whoami 2>&1',$out,$exitcode);
echo "<br />EXEC: ( exitcode : $exitcode )";
echo "<hr /><pre>";
print_r($out);
echo "</pre>";
?>
this will return the computername followed by the username..
now on the computer running the webserver run
control userpasswords2
and give administrator powers to the username whoami said
this will allow you to finally run any command you want using exec or system_exec
on the other hand continuing with my SVN command i found out that I had another problem which is that when you run it, it will look for the config file which is under the administrator account and will give an error saying:
svn: E125001: Can't determine the user's config path
to solve this issue you simply have to specify in the command the config_dir by doing this:
exec('cmd /c svn update --config-dir C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Subversion C:\\inetpub\\vhosts\\websitename\\httpdocs\\folder 2>&1',$out,$exitcode);
hope this helps others which are having problems like the ones i had!

On my Windows7 with Xampp installed and it worked perfectly fine. However with IIS the "user" may not have permissions to the directory, off the top of my head I think it may be the system user IIS-IUSR or something like that.

Execute your command using the 'svn.exe' executable (replace the [[reposity location]]).
It is possible that your client has another svn.exe location, but you will have to figure that out yourself :)

There is also a second parameter in exec, maybe you should also take a look at that one.
The only thing that helped me was, complete routes:

I'm in trouble and that much confused about a php shell_exec command.
When the command is execute by PHP I have no error but the execution fails. If I use exactly the same command from a terminal it works.
Here's the command :
/usr/bin/wkhtmltopdf --lowquality --dpi 300 --encoding utf-8 "/tmp/knplabs_snappyxa9otq.html" "/tmp/knplabs_snappyv3pD7h.pdf"
When I lauch this from a terminal :

I've tried avec the PHP exec() function to get error informations, I just get an "1" error code in return_var and nothing in output.
For information this issue appear on my test server, my desktop computer but not on my notebook. All the 3 are with sames PHP, Apache, Mysql versions.
I don't understand anything ...

First to get information from the shell_exec command add " 2>&1" at the end of the command. In that way you will get information in return of the command :
$no_output = shell_exec($command);
echo $no_output; // nothing
$output = shell_exec($command . ' 2>&1');
echo $output; // in my case : "cannot connect to X server"
The solution :
Not use the wkhtmltopdf ubuntu package (0.9.9-4)
Use the official package from the Wkhtmltopdf download page
So no need to install xvfb ! (I've seen this advice many times)
Looks like a user's permissions issue.
When you run the command from the terminal, it is the user account, currently used, which does have the right permissions, to run a command in /usr/bin, and execute the specific file.
When you run it from the php script, it is the http server account on your system, which needs the permission to execute the file in /usr/bin. Usually this is the apache user.
How you should setup permissions depends on your system. Just remember that what is allowed for apache, is allowed for anyone accessing your http server.
I have had this problem for ages and adding . ' 2>&1' after the $command has somehow solved the problem.
this:
$output = shell_exec($command . ' 2>&1');
instead of:
$output = shell_exec($command);
No idea why but it works and I'm grateful.
Is it a shared hosting? It seems like shell_exec is a restricted function. Try running error_reporting(E_ALL); ini_set('display_errors', 1); before calling shell_exec.
I stumbled upon the same Problem, in my case an absolut Path in the exec Command like /var/www did not work, I had to use relative Paths from the point where I executed the php File.

I'm trying to run ffmpeg commands from php in my MAMP environment and it won't work. I've already added it to my path. I can run shell commands like whoami and ls -la with success but ffmpeg doesn't seem to work. I've also installed ffmpeg-php but it doesn't support the functions i need—Video > Image stack.
Example code:

You should try to open the file /Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/envvars and then comment the four lines of if and else. This will looks like this:
#if test "x$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH" != "x" ; then
# DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH="/Applications/MAMP/Library/lib:$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH"
#else
# DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH="/Applications/MAMP/Library/lib"
It works fine for me! In my case I also setted up all project permission like 777. If you need to do this you need execute the terminal command
chmod -R 777 projectDirectory
on file htdocs directory.
