I have a variable called $cat(which stands for 'category') in the URL.
Depending on whether it is "a" or "b" I swap the stylesheet using a link:

the URL actually works (content is incuded depending on $cat) and I do get the value of $cat but the stylesheet does not seem to have swapped, since the color doesn't change. But if I reload the page (with the URL given by the link before) the stylesheets swap and everything works perfectly.
I used the same method for the desktop version of the website I'm working on and everything works perfectly fine.
This issue seems to only appear if I use jquery mobile.
Does anyone see why this isn't working as it should?

If most of your styles are the same with the exception of the color I would suggest putting them in a single style sheet and writing in a class to the body.
For Example

Then variably write the class in on the body

It must depends on how data are cached on the browser you're using.
Several solutions are possible.
You could not swap CSS stylesheet, but add style properties using PhP or Javascript. That way you'll be 100% sure it will change. (As long as the user has javascript by the way, PhP would make it really 100% sure)
Or force the browser to reload CSS sheets everytime, but it's not a bandwidth friendly solution, I would not recommend that.

To show your content in your "content area" use include. You provide the file name you want to load as an argument. Use an array to specify all the valid files you want to use, then use a $_GET parameter to select the correct sub page to load.

I have a basic webpage made up of a few PHP pages and a few CSS stylesheets. One of these stylesheets is style_common.css which is used by all pages on the website to provide a constant theme. I am having a bit of trouble with this file. I currently have only 2 PHP pages which reference this common CSS file.
The home page (index.php) references the CSS file fine, and the stylesheet styles it as you would expect. I copied the entire contents of index.php and pasted it into a second PHP file, then changed a few minor details such as the heading caption. This new page however, doesn't link to the CSS stylesheet.

You are having the problem because you never linked
style_common.css
to the second page. Instead you have

I am a complete Yii newbie so please forgive a simple question. I've been reading up on various posts and can't find anything that works. All I'm trying to do is setup a Yii site (which I've done) and then link to a static page using my Main layout.
Below are the three files I think are relevant:
index.php: the view I show on my homepage as content with the main layout
terms_of_use.php: the view I'm unsuccessfully trying to get to appear in the main layout
main.php: my master layout
Within the footer of the main layout, the link to the static page is:

When I click on it, it generates what I think is the correct url in the brower address bar:

Found it. I had enabled the urlManager in config/main.php. If I change my original link to the following then I get what I want.
http://localhost/Company/index.php/site/page/view/terms_of_use
In regards to your specific question, I believe you may have forgotten the step of overriding the actions() method in the default site controller - though that raises the question: Which version of the Yii framework are you using? The override is already included in Yii 1.1.12.
Also, as per the comments on that yii wiki article:
If you happen to use accessRules, don't forget to add 'page' (or
whatever name you have in) to allowed action as well.

First, in the default SiteController (or other controller if you

Try not to hardcode urls, instead use functions like createUrl, (there are other variants of it).
When you hardcode urls the problem you faced could arise, createUrl takes into account your urlManager configuration, and generates a url accordingly, so when you make changes you don't have to go to every view and change the url again.

I've been attempting to use jquery and jqueryui to make tabs on my website. However, I can't seem to get them to work. The main page is in PHP, and I am using the Codeigniter framework. If the page fully renders, then the tabs won't work. If I change something that creates a fatal error in the php the tabs appear. While I was attempting to figure out what was going on I created a very basic page with only the jquery demo script, and it wouldn't work either. If it makes any difference, I am hosting on HostGator.

I did track down a java error after all, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

it looks like your calling tabs before it generated I would put that in doc ready

Figured it out.
It was the Google tracking script at the end. It was claiming the $. the reason why it was working when php crashed was because it wasn't getting down to the footer where the Google script was.
Errors on tabs are often due to a missing end of tag such as a </div> or </li> or whatever. Check the code generated by the PHP script to see if everything's fine. You might wanna use the Developper Tools Plugin on FireFox to detect any validation problems (including the missing tags).
I basically use php variables to store the value of the title and the body's ID.
This last one is a technique to have my button (pressed) in the navigation according to which section of the page the user is (in this case the user will know he is currently at "home").

Yes, what you're doing is fine. I do something similar with a PageTemplate class. In addition to setting the title and navigation, it allows navigation links to appear based on user authentication, allows javascript and css to be added to the head section, etc.
What you're doing is very common. There are a million ways to do it, but they'll all require setting some variables.

This works, but you should consider using a template engine such as Smarty instead.
