how to run php function without reloading the page - php

I am a newbie to php
<?php
getDBData(){
//log the call
$fetchedData = myDbCode.fetchData();
return
}
?>
<script type="text/javascript">
dbData = <?php echo json_encode(getDBData()); ?>
</script>
As observed in the log that getDBData get called only once during the page loading and later on even with dbData = <?php echo json_encode(getDBData()); ?> this code the call to getDBData() doesn't happen.
Any idea why the call to getDBData() happening only on page load and not thenafter
How to call getDBData() from javascript

You don't actually understand, how it works.
Javascript is a client-side language, which means, that it executes in web browser.
PHP is server-side which mean it executes on server.
While handling request, first PHP is executed, that the response is returned to user, and then Javacript executes.
To communicate between client and server you can use ajax requests, which are basically simple http requests but without reloading whole page.

You should use Ajax for that. I.e. you have a php file which returns the output of the function:
// data.php
<?php
function getDBData(){
//log the call
$fetchedData = myDbCode.fetchData();
return $fetchedData;
}
echo getDBData();
?>
// html file
<script type="text/javascript">
var getDBData = function(callback) {
$.ajax({
url: "data.php"
}).done(callback);
}
var dbData = <?php echo json_encode(getDBData()); ?>
getDBData(function(data) {
dbData = data;
})
</script>
The code above uses jQuery.

you can used AJAX for get server side php vaue into javascript variable read this ajax example and implement it.
// Launch AJAX request.
$.ajax(
{
// The link we are accessing.
url: jLink.attr( "href" ),
// The type of request.
type: "get",
// The type of data that is getting returned.
dataType: "html",
error: function(){
ShowStatus( "AJAX - error()" );
// Load the content in to the page.
jContent.html( "<p>Page Not Found!!</p>" );
},
beforeSend: function(){
ShowStatus( "AJAX - beforeSend()" );
},
complete: function(){
ShowStatus( "AJAX - complete()" );
},
success: function( strData ){
ShowStatus( "AJAX - success()" );
// Load the content in to the page.
jContent.html( strData );
}
}
);
// Prevent default click.
return( false );
}
);

You can do it through ajax.
Here is a link here to do it with jquery : using jquery $.ajax to call a PHP function

use jquery
$.ajax({
url: 'yourpage.php',
type: 'POST',
data:'',
success: function(resp) {
// put your response where you want to
}
});

You can't directly call PHP functions from javascript.
You have to "outsource" the getDBDate to an own .php file where you output the json_encoded string and call this file with ajax and get the output of the page.
The easiest to do AJAX requests in javascript is to use the JQuery Library: http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.ajax/

Ajax call to PHP action/function with array as data (in wordpress)

I'm trying to push an array from jquery to a php function and I'm out of options to make it work. I've tried multiple options; $_request, $_post, with JSON.stringify, without JSON.stringify, ...
But I keep getting 'null'; can't figure out the right combination. Someone who's willing to explain me why it's not working and how to fix?
JQuery code:
var userIDs = [];
$( "tr.user-row" ).each(function() {
var userID = $(this).attr("data-userid");
userIDs.push(userID);
});
var jsonIDs = JSON.stringify(userIDs);
$.ajax({
url: ajaxurl, // Since WP 2.8 ajaxurl is always defined and points to admin-ajax.php
data: {
'action':'built_ranking', // This is our PHP function below
'data' : {data:jsonIDs},
},
dataType:"json",
success:function(data){
// This outputs the result of the ajax request (The Callback)
//$("tr[data-userid='"+userID+"'] td.punten").html(data.punten);
//$("tr[data-userid='"+userID+"'] td.afstand").html(data.afstand);
console.log(data);
},
error: function(errorThrown){
window.alert(errorThrown);
}
});
PHP code:
function built_ranking(){
if ( isset($_REQUEST) ) {
$data = json_decode(stripslashes($_REQUEST['data']));
foreach($data as $d){
echo $d;
}
print json_encode($data);
//$testResult = array("points"=>"test", "afstand"=>"test");
//print json_encode($testResult);
}
// Always die in functions echoing AJAX content
die();
}
add_action( 'wp_ajax_built_ranking', 'built_ranking' );
If I print the $testResult it returns the array and I can use the data back in jquery, so the function is called.
I've based the code on Send array with Ajax to PHP script
I've multiple ajax calls with $_request instead of $_post and they are working fine. But maybe they can't handle arrays? I've no idea... ^^
What I learned from this question and the help I got: don't guess, debug. try to find ways to see what is posted, what is received, ...
You can read how to 'debug' in the comments of the original question. Useful for starters as me ;)
Working code:
JQuery
var jsonIDs = JSON.stringify(userIDs);
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: ajaxurl, // Since WP 2.8 ajaxurl is always defined and points to admin-ajax.php
data: {
'action':'built_ranking', // This is our PHP function below
'data' : jsonIDs,
},
dataType:"json",
success:function(data){
// This outputs the result of the ajax request (The Callback)
//$("tr[data-userid='"+userID+"'] td.punten").html(data.punten);
//$("tr[data-userid='"+userID+"'] td.afstand").html(data.afstand);
console.log(data);
},
error: function(errorThrown){
window.alert(errorThrown);
}
});
PHP
function built_ranking(){
if ( isset($_POST) ) {
$data = json_decode(stripslashes($_POST['data']));
print json_encode($data);
//$testResult = array("points"=>"test", "afstand"=>"test");
//print json_encode($testResult);
}
// Always die in functions echoing AJAX content
die();
}
add_action( 'wp_ajax_built_ranking', 'built_ranking' );

Running a PHP Script without redirecting or refreshing the page

I am very new to PHP and Javascript.
Now I am running a PHP Script by using but it redirect to another page.
the code is
<a name='update_status' target='_top'
href='updateRCstatus.php?rxdtime=".$time."&txid=".$txid."&balance=".$balance."&ref=".$ref."'>Update</a>
How do I execute this code without redirecting to another page and get a popup of success and fail alert message.
My script code is -
<?PHP
$rxdtime=$_GET["rxdtime"];
$txid=$_GET["txid"];
$balance=$_GET["balance"];
$ref=$_GET["ref"];
-------- SQL Query --------
?>
Thanks in advance.
You will need to use AJAX to do this. Here is a simple example:
HTML
Just a simple link, like you have in the question. However I'm going to modify the structure a bit to keep it a bit cleaner:
<a id='update_status' href='updateRCstatus.php' data-rxdtime='$time' data-txid='$txid' data-balance='$balance' data-ref='$ref'>Update</a>
I'm assuming here that this code is a double-quoted string with interpolated variables.
JavaScript
Since you tagged jQuery... I'll use jQuery :)
The browser will listen for a click event on the link and perform an AJAX request to the appropriate URL. When the server sends back data, the success function will be triggered. Read more about .ajax() in the jQuery documentation.
As you can see, I'm using .data() to get the GET parameters.
$(document).ready(function() {
$('#update_status').click(function(e) {
e.preventDefault(); // prevents the default behaviour of following the link
$.ajax({
type: 'GET',
url: $(this).attr('href'),
data: {
rxdtime: $(this).data('rxdtime'),
txid: $(this).data('txid'),
balance: $(this).data('balance'),
ref: $(this).data('ref')
},
dataType: 'text',
success: function(data) {
// do whatever here
if(data === 'success') {
alert('Updated succeeded');
} else {
alert(data); // perhaps an error message?
}
}
});
});
});
PHP
Looks like you know what you're doing here. The important thing is to output the appropriate data type.
<?php
$rxdtime=$_GET["rxdtime"];
$txid=$_GET["txid"];
$balance=$_GET["balance"];
$ref=$_GET["ref"];
header('Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8');
// -------- SQL Query -------
// your logic here will vary
try {
// ...
echo 'success';
} catch(PDOException $e) {
echo $e->getMessage();
}
Instead of <a href>, use ajax to pass the values to your php and get the result back-
$.post('updateRCstatus/test.html', { 'rxdtime': <?php ecdho $time ?>, OTHER_PARAMS },
function(data) {
alert(data);
});

How to pass Array from Javascript to PHP

I have a function which saves an array each time the button is clicked to localStorage.The button will be clicked multiple times and I need to put this Array list into PHP somehow which is on another page from this file.
Thanks
a.js
(this function listens onLoad of the page)
function doFirst(){
var button = document.getElementById("button");
button.addEventListener("click", save, false);
var buttons = document.getElementById("clear");
buttons.addEventListener("click", clear, false);
var buttonss = document.getElementById("submittodb");
buttonss.addEventListener("click", toPHP, false);
$.ajax({
method: 'post',
dataType: 'json',
url: 'edit.php',
data: { items: oldItems }, //NOTE THIS LINE, it's QUITE important
success: function() {//some code to handle successful upload, if needed
}
});
}
function save(){
var oldItems = JSON.parse(localStorage.getItem('itemsArray')) || [];
var newItem = {
'num': document.getElementById("num").value,
'methv': document.getElementById("methv").value,
'q1': document.getElementById("q1").value,
'q2':document.getElementById("q2").value,
'q3':document.getElementById("q3").value,
'q4':document.getElementById("q4").value,
'comm':document.getElementById("comm").value,
};
oldItems.push(newItem);
localStorage.setItem('itemsArray', JSON.stringify(oldItems));}
edit.php
$parsed_array = json_decode($_POST['items']);
and i get the error: Notice: Undefined index: items in /home/project/edit.php on line 9
In order to pass this array to PHP you need to:
JSon-encode it
Make an AJAX or POST request to PHP
Parse the passed array into PHP array
If you're using jQuery (if you're not you should start - it is really handy tool) steps (1) and (2) is as simple as
$.ajax({
method: 'post',
dataType: 'json',
url: 'the URL of PHP page that will handle the request',
data: { items: oldItems }, //NOTE THIS LINE, it's QUITE important
success: function() {//some code to handle successful upload, if needed
}
});
In PHP you can parse the passed array with just
$parsed_array = json_decode($_POST['items']);
There is a direct connection between { items: oldItems } and $_POST['items']. The name of variable you give to the parameter in javascript call will be the name of key in $_POST array where it ends up. So if you just use data: oldItems in javascript you'll have all your entities scattered around the $_POST array.
More on $.ajax, and json_decode for reference.
You can create an AJAX function (use jQuery) and send the JSON data to the server and then manage it using a PHP function/method.
Basically, you need to send the data from the client (browser) back to the server where the database hosted.
Call JSON.stringify(oldItems); to create the json string
Do a Do a POST request using AJAX.
Probably the simplest way is using jQuery:
$.post('http://server.com/url.php', { items: JSON.stringify(oldItems) }, function(response) {
// it worked.
});

JQUERY - .html() can also view php

The following script sends data with ajax for login
I want to format the data returned by using, in essence, a session variable ($ _SESSION)
I can do it
$("#login").click(function(){
username=$("#user_name").val();
password=$("#password").val();
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "inc/login.inc.php",
data: "username="+username+"&password="+password,
success: function(msg){
if(msg!='false')
{
$("#login_form").fadeOut("normal");
$("#shadow").fadeOut();
$("#profile").html("<\?php print(\"$_SESSION['name'].\" <a href='inc\/logout.inc.php' id='logout'>Logout k2<\/a>\");\?>");
//valori menĂ¹
if(tipo=='1')
{$("#admin").css('display','none')}
}
else
{
$("#add_err").html("Username o password errata");
}
},
beforeSend:function()
{
$("#add_err").html("<img hspace='84' src='img/loading.gif' alt='Loading...' width='32' height='32'>" )
}
});
return false;
});
especially this is possible, in this way would print the name of the user just logged. otherwise I would not know how to do
$("#profile").html("<\?php print(\"$_SESSION['name'].\" <a href='inc\/logout.inc.php' id='logout'>Logout k2<\/a>\");\?>");
You can't insert PHP code after the script has already been processed.
Either pull it in via ajax, or include the actual PHP output into your javascript.
ie, in page.php
<script>
var sessionName = '<?php echo $_SESSION['name']; ?>';
</script>
then when you need it later
$("#profile").html(sessionName + " Logout k2");
JavaScript is client-side, it simply can't execute your php code.
You have to return something (eg. the username) in the php file you use in your ajax request and use that in your JS.
See the jQuery ajax docs for examples.
You'll need to serve the php code:
$("#profile").load("inc/login-header.inc.php");
login-header.inc.php
<?php
print($_SESSION['name'] . " <a href='inc/logout.inc.php' id='logout'>Logout k2</a>");
?>
The easiest way to send information back from the php script to the javascript, is by using the msg variable in
success: function(msg){
If you just want to send back one string, you just echo that one string in your php file and you will have its value in msg. If there are multiple variables you want to send back, you can package the result in a json object.
So assuming that everything you want to send back is contained in the php array named $output, you do a echo json_encode($output); at the end of your php script to get the whole thing in msg.
that won't work, as the PHP code is never processed.
In login.inc.php try something like this
<?php
if (!loginOK()){
echo "{login:false}";
} else {
echo "{login:true, name:'".$_SESSION['name']."'}";
}
and then on the client
success: function(msg){
if (msg.login){
// stuff
} else {
$("#profile").html(msg.name + $('<a>').attr('href', 'logout.php').html('logout'));
}
}

Some ajax help?

I have a php script that takes some user form input and packs some files into a zip based on that input. The problem is that sometimes the server errors, so all the form data is lost. I was told I could use ajax instead so that the user never even has to change the page. I've never used ajax, and looking at http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.ajax/ without any experience in ajax is quite difficult.
The page says that you can accept returns from an ajax call. How do you set up returns in the PHP file for an ajax call? If the server errors with the ajax call, how will I know?
edit: Also, is there a way to send an ajax request with javascript and jquery as if it were a submitted form?
How do you set up returns in the PHP file
just echo it in ajax page that will return as response
Simple Tutorial
client.php
$.post('server.php',({parm:"1"}) function(data) {
$('.result').html(data);
});
server.php
<?php
echo $_POST['parm'];
?>
result will be 1
edit on OP comments
Is there a way to use ajax as if you were submitting a form
Yes, there is
You can use plugins like jQuery form
Using submit
If you using jquery validation plugin, you can use submit handler option
using sumit
$('#form').submit(function() {
//your ajax call
return false;
});
every ajax function has a function param to deal with server returns.and most of them has the param msg,that is the message from server.
server pages for example php pages you can just use echo something to return the infomation to the ajax funciton . below is an example
$.ajax({
url:yoururl,
type:post,
data:yourdata,
success:function(msg){
//here is the function dealing with infomation form server.
}
});
The easiest way to get information from PHP to JavaScript via AJAX is to encode any PHP data as JSON using json_encode().
Here's a brief example, assuming your server errors are catchable
<?php
try {
// process $_POST data
// zip files, etc
echo json_encode(array('status' => true));
} catch (Exception $e) {
$data = array(
'status' => false,
'message' => $e->getMessage()
);
echo json_encode($data);
}
Then, your jQuery code might look something like this
$('form').submit(function() {
var data = $(this).serialize();
$.ajax(this.action, {
data: data,
type: 'POST',
dataType: 'json',
success: function(data, textStatus, jqXHR) {
if (!data.status) {
alert(data.message);
return;
}
// otherwise, everything worked ok
},
error: error(jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) {
// handle HTTP errors here
}
});
return false;
});
