I just created a web application that uses sockets in my local server. Everything works.
The problems start when I hosted my resources on a 1and1 shared server. I get the following fatal error
Fatal error: Call to undefined function socket_create ()
it is clear that the extension php_socket is not enabled.
There's there a way to enable this extension by code?
In most cases, you cannot install or activate additional PHP modules on shared hosting.
Shared hosting has a very limited perimeter and strict security requirements. Most functions for program execution and networking will be disabled on most shared hosting offers. Shared hosting offers that let you do anything are very rare and priced accordingly.
Besides, installing or activating extensions at execution time is impossible since PHP version 5.3. See http://php.net/manual/en/function.dl.php
If you want to build advanced applications, shared hosting is not the right product choice. Look for virtual servers (which you can set up as you like) or even get a full dedicated server.
If you really want to press the matter, I recommend contacting your 1&1 customer service and ask for directions there. They may or may not be able to help you on to achieve your goal.

I recently registered to iPage web hosting, they are providing PHP Version 5.3.13 but Laravel 4.2 required PHP Version >= 5.4
Please guide me, how can I upgrade iPage php version or how can I configure laravel 4.2 to run?
You can't. Shared hosts like iPage (shared meaning they're based on traditional unix multiuser systems) do not allow end users to upgrade the version of PHP running on a server -- doing so would be chaos, as all users share the same PHP binaries.
Some shared hosts install multiple versions of PHP on their servers and provide a mechanism that allows users to switch between versions. It looks like iPage might offer this feature, although it's unclear if PHP 5.4 will be an option.

New servers of HostGator India are supporting PHP 5.4.36 only. I need to upgrade to PHP 5.5 manually by me. How can I do that?
You can't. HostGator, and most other shared hosting providers, do not allow you to install software on their servers. You would need to upgrade to a virtual private server (VPS) or a dedicated server where you can control the software installed.
Some providers run multiple versions of PHP allowing you to choose which one your site uses. You should ask if they offer this.
If HostGator India doesn't allow the switching of PHP versions, there is no way to update it "manually". If you need that version, consider switching hosting providers. You might want to contact HostGator support and check with them first - they may make an exception, but it's unlikely.

I've developed a site in PHP using xampp's Apache and MySQL servers. I didn't keep the prospect of hosting it in AWS in my mind and so I was wondering how much should I change my site to host it on AWS. And I wish to change it as little as possible.
Can someone point me to a definitive guide to AWS site hosting of a php site that's developed for Apache?
Thanks.
So long as your PHP code is well written, it should be pretty portable. There is no definitive guide that I know about for XAMPP->AWS deployments, but you should find it pretty easy to spin up an EC2 instance and test your app before public launch. Is there some aspect in particular that you are worried about in terms of the migration, or is it just a general concern? If it's just a general concern i.e. you just haven't done it before, keep in mind that you can easily destroy and re deploy your AWS server, so I would recommend that you just give it a go and then come back here and post any errors that you run into... also the guys over at https://serverfault.com/ (don't worry, it's affiliated with Stack Overflow) might be better placed to help you out.
It has less to do with XAMPP => AWS, and more to do with:
Which OS are you moving from/to?
Which generation of PHP are you moving from/to?
AWS services like Elastic Beanstalk and OpsWorks use Amazon Linux as their base OS (related to CentOS and RHEL), but with raw EC2, there are tons of different supported OS's (e.g., Ubuntu, Slackware, Fedora, Debian, CentOS, Amazon Linux). In both cases, you have full root access to the machines.
Also, make sure you're using the same generation of PHP (e.g., 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, HHVM) between your current server and the AWS server. This will prevent things like language/syntax differences between the two environments.
Like Nicholas Byfleet said, "So long as your PHP code is well written, it should be pretty portable."

I am new to using node.js and socket io and I am currently hosting my php website on a server, now that I am going to be adding node js and socket io to my website I will need hosting that will allow me to have those, are there any out there or will I need to have my own? I am hoping to have a cheap hosting service as this is just to have my site hosted while in development, once I am finished with it I plan to have my own server set up.
I recommend DMEHosting as a VPS to use for development. Their cheapest Linux VPS is more than affordable and serves your purposes. It will also get you into the basics of setting up a web server on Linux via SSH, which is essential. I recommend reading up on an article on setting on a VPS on Cent OS. Just Google that. You don't really need to learn how to use Linux for now. Just know how to navigate directories and follow tutorials on setting up your own web server.
Edit: Keeping this post as is for historical purposes, but I now recommend an EC2 instance or DigitalOcean.
Here is a list of Node hosting solutions. However, if you want to be able to have Node.js + PHP and Apache, you will need to use your own server, like a VPS. Popular options are Linode, Slicehost, Amazon EC2 and Fanatical. Note that the VPS option will require good knowledge of Linux.

I need to find a hosting company that provides a LAMP stack, the P being PHP.
Finding that is pretty easy, but I have a further requirement of unixODBC and FreeTDS or some equilant.
The project will require a remote connection to a Microsoft SQL 2005 database.
Most of the project will use a local MySQL database but it also requires data from a remote MS SQL 2005 database.
In my reading it looks like I'll need unixODBC and FreeTDS installed on the server to make that connection. So far I've been unable to find a shared host that provides these.
Can anyone suggest or use a host that might work? The project has budget limits so we we're hoping to find a shared host.
I would say near 0 chance. The requirements are pretty unusual, so mass hosting will not fullfill them. Try going for a well priced virtual server... that gives you the option to install yourself. or go windows hosting (WAMP) - shoult not make a difference and the price may be better than the virtual hosting (plus overhead of self administration) and obviously you have Odbc there if you insist on it (better use oledb).
I was able to find a host that has unixODBC and freetds configured and installed with PHP in a shared host. The company is Modwest hosting.
