I use a super simple image resize php script, which I have integrated on one of my sites based on wordpress. I allow people to resize their image one-by-one, and basically after the resize is done I display it to them in the browser so they could download/save. Here goes the html part.
<form action="http://awesomeness.com/wp-content/themes/awesome/resize/processupload.php" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data" id="UploadForm">
<input name="ImageFile" type="file" />
<input type="submit" id="SubmitButton" value="Upload" />
</form>
<div id="output"></div>
There is also a little jquery script that I think is pointless to show here. Its only function is put the resized image into the output-div below the form. Below goes the contents of the mentioned processupload.php.
if(isset($_POST)) {
$BigImageMaxSize = 800;
$DestinationDirectory = 'uploads/';
$Quality = 90;
if(!isset($_FILES['ImageFile']) || !is_uploaded_file($_FILES['ImageFile']['tmp_name'])) {
die('Something went wrong with Upload!');
}
$RandomNumber = uniqid();
$ImageName = str_replace(' ','-',strtolower($_FILES['ImageFile']['name']));
$ImageSize = $_FILES['ImageFile']['size'];
$TempSrc = $_FILES['ImageFile']['tmp_name'];
$ImageType = $_FILES['ImageFile']['type'];
switch(strtolower($ImageType))
{
case 'image/png':
$CreatedImage = imagecreatefrompng($_FILES['ImageFile']['tmp_name']);
break;
case 'image/gif':
$CreatedImage = imagecreatefromgif($_FILES['ImageFile']['tmp_name']);
break;
case 'image/jpeg':
case 'image/pjpeg':
$CreatedImage = imagecreatefromjpeg($_FILES['ImageFile']['tmp_name']);
break;
default:
die('Unsupported File!'); //output error and exit
}
list($CurWidth,$CurHeight)=getimagesize($TempSrc);
$ImageExt = substr($ImageName, strrpos($ImageName, '.'));
$ImageExt = str_replace('.','',$ImageExt);
$ImageName = preg_replace("/\\.[^.\\s]{3,4}$/", "", $ImageName);
$NewImageName = $ImageName.'-'.$RandomNumber.'.'.$ImageExt;
$DestRandImageName = $DestinationDirectory.$NewImageName;
if(resize_Image($CurWidth,$CurHeight,$BigImageMaxSize,$DestRandImageName,$CreatedImage,$Quality,$ImageType)) {
echo '<div id="output">';
echo '<img src="http://awesomewebsite.com/uploads/'.$NewImageName.'" alt="Resized">';
echo '</div>';
} else {
die('Resize Error'); //output error
}
}
function resize_Image($CurWidth,$CurHeight,$MaxSize,$DestFolder,$SrcImage,$Quality,$ImageType) {
if($CurWidth <= 0 || $CurHeight <= 0) {
return false;
}
$ImageScale = min($MaxSize/$CurWidth, $MaxSize/$CurHeight);
$NewWidth = ceil($ImageScale*$CurWidth);
$NewHeight = ceil($ImageScale*$CurHeight);
$NewCanves = imagecreatetruecolor($NewWidth, $NewHeight);
if(imagecopyresampled($NewCanves, $SrcImage,0, 0, 0, 0, $NewWidth, $NewHeight, $CurWidth, $CurHeight))
{
switch(strtolower($ImageType))
{
case 'image/png':
imagepng($NewCanves,$DestFolder);
break;
case 'image/gif':
imagegif($NewCanves,$DestFolder);
break;
case 'image/jpeg':
case 'image/pjpeg':
imagejpeg($NewCanves,$DestFolder,$Quality);
break;
default:
return false;
}
//delete original image and free some memory
if(is_resource($NewCanves)) {imagedestroy($NewCanves);}
return true;
}
}
You can see that the original image is deleted automatically by the script once the resize takes place. But I need the resized image deleted from my /uploads folder too. Basically I just want the script to resize the image and display the resized image on the browser itself only, not to save it on server anywhere. Is it possible. If it is could you please suggest me the edits or edit the code in question itself.Credit for original script.
Bottomline of the question would be : How can this script display the
resized image on the visitor's browser without saving any file (
original or resized ) anywhere on server.
THINGS TRIED : I am still trying to decipher this somewhat similar thread but still am clueless. I am going to keep updating this space until this thing is over. I am trying unlink() method now but I am unable to find the variable to unlink, is it $DestRandImageName ? coz unlink($DestRandImageName) that does not seem to work.
FINAL UPDATE : After countless minor efforts I finally got it done. I dont think I should add it as answer so, here. I got all my solutions in this tutorial. Discovered that if I only need to reproduce the image to the browser without saving it, I will need to take a different approach employing php functions like imagecopyresampled() and imagejpeg(). Learned it the hard way, but glad.

I am trying to compress & resize my images using the php GD library. Nearly every answer on SO and everywhere else is the same, but for my solution, the PNG's are not being correctly transformed, and some jpg's are giving bizarre results.
This is the code I am using:
public function resizeImages() {
ini_set('max_execution_time', 0);
//Initial settings, Just specify Source and Destination Image folder.
$ImagesDirectory = FCPATH . 'design/img/test/'; //Source Image Directory End with Slash
$DestImagesDirectory = FCPATH . 'design/img/test/thumb/'; //Destination Image Directory End with Slash
$NewImageWidth = 150; //New Width of Image
$NewImageHeight = 150; // New Height of Image
$Quality = 90; //Image Quality
//Open Source Image directory, loop through each Image and resize it.
if($dir = opendir($ImagesDirectory)){
while(($file = readdir($dir))!== false){
$imagePath = $ImagesDirectory.$file;
$destPath = $DestImagesDirectory.$file;
$checkValidImage = #getimagesize($imagePath);
if(file_exists($imagePath) && $checkValidImage) //Continue only if 2 given parameters are true
{
//Image looks valid, resize.
if (resize_image($imagePath,$destPath,$NewImageWidth,$NewImageHeight,$Quality))
{
echo $file.' resize Success!<br />';
/*
Now Image is resized, may be save information in database?
*/
} else {
echo $file.' resize Failed!<br />';
}
}
}
closedir($dir);
}
}
and the resize_image function looks like this:
function resize_image($SrcImage,$DestImage, $MaxWidth,$MaxHeight,$Quality)
{
list($iWidth,$iHeight,$type) = getimagesize($SrcImage);
$ImageScale = min($MaxWidth/$iWidth, $MaxHeight/$iHeight);
$NewWidth = ceil($ImageScale*$iWidth);
$NewHeight = ceil($ImageScale*$iHeight);
$NewCanves = imagecreatetruecolor($NewWidth, $NewHeight);
$imagetype = strtolower(image_type_to_mime_type($type));
switch($imagetype)
{
case 'image/jpeg':
$NewImage = imagecreatefromjpeg($SrcImage);
break;
case 'image/png':
$NewImage = imagecreatefrompng($SrcImage);
break;
default:
return false;
}
//allow transparency for pngs
imagealphablending($NewCanves, false);
imagesavealpha($NewCanves, true);
// Resize Image
if(imagecopyresampled($NewCanves, $NewImage,0, 0, 0, 0, $NewWidth, $NewHeight, $iWidth, $iHeight))
{
switch ($imagetype) {
case 'image/jpeg':
if(imagejpeg($NewCanves,$DestImage,$Quality))
{
imagedestroy($NewCanves);
}
break;
case 'image/png':
if(imagepng($NewCanves,$DestImage,$Quality))
{
imagedestroy($NewCanves);
}
break;
default:
return false;
}
return true;
}
}
Every single png is not working, it just returns a file with 0 bytes and "file type is not supported", even though the type is recognized as .PNG in Windows...
Some JPG's return a weird result as well, see the following screenshot which indicates my issues regarding png's and some jpg's:
1) Do not use getimagesize to verify that the file is a valid image, to mention the manual:
Do not use getimagesize() to check that a given file is a valid image. Use a purpose-built solution such as the Fileinfo extension instead.
$checkValidImage = exif_imagetype($imagePath);
if(file_exists($imagePath) && ($checkValidImage == IMAGETYPE_JPEG || $checkValidImage == IMAGETYPE_PNG))
2) While imagejpeg() accepts quality from 0 to 100, imagepng() wants values between 0 and 9, you could do something like that:
if(imagepng($NewCanves,$DestImage,round(($Quality/100)*9)))
3) Using readdir () you should skip the current directory . and the parent..
while(($file = readdir($dir))!== false){
if ($file == "." || $file == "..")
continue;
edit
Point 2 is particularly important, imagepng () accepts values greater than 9 but then often fails with error in zlib or libpng generating corrupt png files.
I tried resizing some png and jpeg and I didn't encounter any problems with these changes.
I have been going round in circles with this image upload where when I submit with file selected it uploads and posts directory as expected to database,
but of course if I submit without image selected then I get an error.
So I then would would do a check so see if file input is empty however it then stops the upload even when a file is selected and if I remove it I get this error
Warning: getimagesize(): Filename cannot be empty in ....
On searching this issue and see different peoples solutions, they suggest to increase the Upload max file etc... on the wamp php.ini which I did so, and restarted and still the same issue. However there is no issue with the file size as 5.83kb and php.ini is 25mb nor is there an issue with the file type because it does upload if I remove my error check.
Either way I have been scratching my head as I can not get to confirm when empty and echo out the error that I have set and then when file is selected to post. It just gives me the above error when checking.
Below is a working version which posts as expected but displays the error if empty. I don't want it to display this error, I want to display my own error.
Any suggestions? It's driving me up the wall :(

This is the form input field:
<input type="file" name="image" id="image" placeholder="Choose an image to upload" maxlength="255"/>
The rest of the inputs store to the MySQL database table. No error is showing for the upload. The image isn't uploading to the designated directory which is defined in a configuration file which is required in this script
Unfortunately I can't post comments yet, so I'm writing this as an answer.
You check whether image was uploaded correctly and work with it, but the function does nothing otherwise. Then you check if file was uploaded properly with is_uploaded_file and if it wasn't... you continue your routine. It would be wiser to throw an exception, like you're doing in other places.
Do you have error reporting level set on reasonable level (so you would know what's going wrong)?
Can i change the name of the file, say an image for example which has name like '0124.jpg',
before sending it to the server?
<input id="f1" style="margin-bottom: 5px;" type="file" name="f1" onchange="javascript:readURL_f1(this);"/>
<input id="f2" style="margin-bottom: 5px;" type="file" name="f1" onchange="javascript:readURL_f2(this);"/>
If the file is uploaded from f1, then before sending to to server, the name should become pic1_[filename].jpg, instead of just sending the raw filename.
I don't want this to be done in server side because i think it might be complicated.
EDIT : Upload.php is my php file which uploads whatever in the file. So, its been a challenge for me. i can change the filename, but that gets changed in all the three uploads.
for example i add an '_' for the incoming filename. Then, it gets changed to all filenames.
Anyway from clientside?

When you are uploading the File you usually follow this workflow
User Chooses a File and Clicks Upload
Server Pics up the File from the temp folder - check MimeType, Resize and Rename the File and store it to which ever location you want on the file server.
While Renaming if you want to see if the same file name exsists and then append the _01, _02 then you will have to check if a file exists with that name and then append the unique number at the end.
Things like that are usually done in the server side. The purpose of preppending or appending a code or, say, changing the whole name of the file is to prevent uploaded file name conflicts. So imagine doing it to the client side? When upload button is pressed you need to ask the server if this file name is already existing, then you wait for the response of the server then do the renaming based on the response then send it to the server instead of just sending it to the server then do the checking then renaming then saving.
I'm (a newbie in php) still working on a time off project and another problem came up, for which I can't find a solution. Therefore I hope u guys can help me! Worked great the last time I posted something on here! I really appreciate your help...thx ahead!
My problem:
I want users to be able to upload pictures when they are logged in. They got several little buttons on their profile with images on them...and they should be able to change them...
I want to have it like this -> When a user uploads an image, the script shall create a new folder on the server. This shall happen in the "user_images" folder (that exists already). So a user with e.g. "id=55" creates a folder "55" in "user_images" when he uploads images. I tried and tried and tried and tried...with different syntax in line -> "$upload_dir =" but without any success :-/ I just don't get it to work...
Here is the part of the script:
<?php
include 'dbconfig.php';
page_protect();
$rs_settings = mysql_query("select * from user where id='$_SESSION[user_id]'");
while ($row_settings = mysql_fetch_array($rs_settings));

session_start();
//only assign a new timestamp if the session variable is empty
if (!isset($_SESSION['user_id']) || strlen($_SESSION['user_id'])==0){
$_SESSION['user_id'] = mysql_query("select * from user where id='$_SESSION[user_id]'");
//assign the timestamp to the session variable
$_SESSION['user_file_ext']= "";
}

$upload_path = $upload_dir;
$large_image_prefix = "Large_";
$thumb_image_prefix = "button_";
$large_image_name = $large_image_prefix.$_SESSION['user_id'];

It would be really cool if someone could help me to fix these problems...you may know how hard it is, when you're just a rookie! If there's more weird syntax in there...let me know, I'm just a beginner (like we all have been at the beginning) and trying to get better :)
Thank you guys!
Keeping in mind that allowing any user to upload content to your server creates a security hole that requires special attention, this is a bit of code I've used in the past for an internal-use application:
$folderPath = "/uploads/" . $folderName;
$exist = is_dir($folderPath);
if(!$exist) {
mkdir("$folderPath");
chmod("$folderPath", 0755);
}
else { echo "Folder already exists"; }
You can also chmod right from mkdir but was having issues with doing that on this particular server config.
http://php.net/manual/en/function.mkdir.php
UPDATED with more complete example:
// Define path where file will be uploaded to
// User ID is set as directory name
$folderPath = "/uploads/$userID";
// Check to see if directory already exists
$exist = is_dir($folderPath);
// If directory doesn't exist, create directory
if(!$exist) {
mkdir("$folderPath");
chmod("$folderPath", 0755);
}
else { echo "Folder already exists"; }
// PROCESS FILE UPLOAD
// Set initial/temporary upload location
// temp_uploads must have proper read/write permissions (755 or 777)
$target_path = "/uploads/temp_uploads/";
// Append the name of the uploaded file to the temp directory
$target_path .= basename( $_FILES['uploadedfile']['name']);
if(move_uploaded_file($_FILES['uploadedfile']['tmp_name'], $target_path)) {
$filename = basename( $_FILES['uploadedfile']['name']);
// Location where temporary file is being stored
$temp_location = '/uploads/temp_uploads/' . basename( $_FILES['uploadedfile']['name']);
// Final destination where file will be located
$destination = "/uploads/$folderPath/$filename";
rename($temp_location, $destination);
}
You are assigning a mysql query resource to the $_SESSION["user_id"]
$_SESSION['user_id'] = mysql_query("select * from user where id='$_SESSION[user_id]'");
I think you want to get the user id out of that query
Also if your code produces any errors it would be great if you included them in your question
ps. don't use mysql_* functions, they are deprecated and create unwanted security holes if not used properly, learn dibi, pdo, or any other newer database layer
$file_name=basename($_FILES['uploadedfile']['name']);
mkdir("upload/".$username,0777);
$target_path = "upload/$username/". $file_name;
