I've started using FatFreeFramework for my current project and I've stumbled upon something I cannot seem to overcome.
In my application the user opens up a dialog through which he can insert a new category in to the system. He must also choose the two parent categories (second on should be dependent on the choice in the first one) and insert a title.(on the image below)
The problems are the populating of select fields and the submitting. How can I populate the select fields? How can I get the category to be added to the database without refreshing the page in any way? I know I should use ajax for this task, but I was unable to get anything to work due to (in my opinion) scarce documentation on this specific task.
How can I execute the ajax calls? I know the routes can have an [ajax] attribute but how does it work? How can it be incorporated?

i am learning php along with mysql and so developing a e-comm site it is very exiting when i get hindered by some error but this time it just a html thing that has stopped my constuction.
so, i have to populate 2 <select> tags in a addProduct form for Category and sub-category but i need to work on onChnage event for category select list, as to populate the sub-category select list on basis of the user selection in category select list. i have searched a lot and some how i can do it but i want to know what are the possible ways and what is the safest way? also can i build a php function to do this if yes how to get the element value without submitting the form since it will submit all the form data that will empty all other fields.

onChange events are handled by javascript, PHP is finished processing before the user sees the loaded webpage.
To do what you are asking, you will want to utilize javascript/AJAX to update the page "on the fly"
I have a tournament with multiple divisions and multiple forms for which I use gravity forms.
There are times when someone requests to be changed to a different division. However, I am unable to move the competitor from one division to another in gravity forms, as the divisions are each using a different form ID (and they have still not developed a method for helping with this).
How would I go about moving a SINGLE ENTRY from one gravity form to another forms entry list please.
We have many teams at the tournament, so mass export and import is not what i am looking to achieve. Its about being able to move a single entry from one list of entries in one form to another forms list of entries?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Even a simple "use this method" in general terms will help me greatly. Would I use some form of JQuery fiddle, a php script, an sql script or what please as Import Entries is not available currently in GF

You can not do that, but instead maybe you shold design your form to include all types of submissions logic. I mean you can put a drop-down field at the beginning of your form. Then you can use https://gravityview.co/ to edit your single entry field.
I have a workaround for this which i am using in one of my current projects for http://projects.dzign-r.com.au and that is,
1) export both of the the forms (i.e the one from which you need the field to move and the other to which you need this field to be moved to) and it exports these as json files
2) search for the field ID that you need to be moved to another form, cut its json code from the json file and paste it in the other form's json file where you need it to be moved to
3) then import the form back. and test it to make sure it works as you want it, (as a caution you may change the field ID after you paste it in new form to be something which is not used in this form already).
4) once u see everything is fine u may just delete the old form?
I have an application in which I display a form so a user can search for client records based on last name. After entering search parameters, the record or records (there could be multiple clients with the same last name) are displayed. I then want the user to be able to select a client record, possibly with a radio button, and hit one of two buttons: Display details, or Create Reservation. The Display Details button should cause a new display with details of the selected record. The Create Reservation button should cause a new form, with its own handling, to be displayed.
Now, I know I can set things up according to this login

The problem is, I end up with really ugly, hard to read code because the php code to generate and display the reservation form is lengthy, and needs its own validation, database interaction, and form handling. The code, to my Java-oriented eye, looks ugly and non-modular. Plus, the code for handling the reservation form is icky, with lots of flag setting to determine if we are in form entry mode or form handling mode. I would like a much cleaner way to do this. So my question is, what is the best practice for handling the situation where there are multiple buttons and the action associated with each button is complex?
I could call a function, obviously, but I still end up with the ugly flags determining which state the script is in (are we displaying the reservation form or handling it?). I could create another php file and include it, but the ugliness persists. Or, I could use header, and pass the client record id in a session variable to the new php script. But that would mean a second, unnecessary retrieve from the database to get the client information again.
All the code examples I see on the web show very simple processing after a form button is pressed. What is the best way to do complex processing and displaying a second form based on a button press?
Have you considered using a framework like Laravel for your site. It would seem to me that you must be doing this "manually". With the complexities you described, having a system with routes and "build-in" functionality (like Eloquent ORM) might serve to simplify things for you.
I would go for using ajax and a rich jQuery plugin (or some other framework) to do what you want.
Basically you will handle lists and the functionality that you mentioned with the php reading data and jQuery scripts to dysplay it. And the information that you have to show would be through ajax. Or when you want to edit.

I am working on a pair of form fields the directly effect one another. Specifically the problem I am dealing with is that we have thousands of groups users can join on this website that I have been working on. We are creating some administrative analytics forms for the site. Part of those forms is filtering by group.
The problem is that most of the people don't know the name of a group off the top of their heads, only what it starts with. So instead of using auto-complete we came up with two dropdowns. The first contains the options A through Z, letters of the alphabet which the group names begin with. The second dropdown contains all of the groups beginning with the selected letter.
The concept is simple enough and we were able to implement the AJAX pretty easy with jQuery. But this causes validation errors. After some research I found that this has to do with Drupal form caching. The solution is to use the ahah functions.
The problem with that is that all the instructions I have found so far deal with ahah actions for the specified field updating itself, not another field. So I am trying to figure out how to get the list of letters to update the group list using ahah and registering the new values with the form cache.
One solution I found was to simply load all the values on the page in a hidden dropdown and then just load up those in the set in the visible one as needed. But that creates a bunch of problems because the client uses almost exclusively IE and we have seen IE choke when given huge lists like that. Especially with the lists stored in JavaScript. So we need a light-weight solution.
Any thoughts? Ideas?
In a nutshell AHAH works like this:
Form gets generated with an empty $form_state
When an element that has the #ahah property gets changed an ajax call is made to the url specified as path in the #ahah property.
The callback at that url does this:
Retrieves the form from the form cache
Processes the form
Rebuilds the form with a current $form_state so that it can add / change elements based on that
The form is put in the form cache to avoid validation errors
The form is rendered and returned as JSON
Drupal replaces the contents of the wrapper div with the new form.
In your case you'll need to make your form generation function aware of the values selected in $form_state. It would have to:
Generate the letters drop-down
Look into $form_state and see if there is a letter selected. If so, generate the second drop-down based on the selected value.
The callback function would implement the form caching and rebuilding.

In a PHP application I'm building, I'd like to have an 'editable' table. The idea is that each row will have an edit button, which, when clicked, will replace certain fields with text fields and select lists and change to a save button. When the user clicks save, the data data should be validated and changed if appropriate.
I'm mainly tackling this as a learning project (I'm aware there's a ton of stuff already out there) and to see if I can get anything 'cool' working. I've created a PHP table-generating class that can take an array of objects as a datasource, and can have columns created based on those class methods.
e.g.

$table->addColumn('Amount Due', array('getOrdersManager', 'getTotalAmountDue')); //First calls getOrdersManager() on each data item and then calls the getTotalAmountDue() on the result
I'd like to try my hand at extending this to be able to the table row and have those changes reflect on the corresponding object in the data source.
I don't really have very much experience with AJAX although it's clearly going to play a very important role in getting this to work correctly.
Any tips on how I should approach such a task?
Edit: I'm not really interesting in looking at Ajax libraries at this point (I do have some experience with jQuery). I'm more interested in learning the basics of Ajax at this point.

Some things to be aware of/think about:
Are you going to send every field change to the server, or only the whole row (the latter is more resource efficient, but not necessarily as accurate)
How are you going to ensure the data displayed stays accurate even if the update to the server fails for some reason (either a network failure or a DB/validation error)
How will you ensure the user has permission to update the record and that you don't open a security hole by allowing the AJAX responder just to update whatever record it is told to. My approach has been that if a record is shown in the interactive table then the user has the permission to update it, so a cache of record IDs is held in the session when the table is created
Are you going to load options dynamically? If you don't, then a long table can end up containing a lot of HTML because of repetition of the select controls, but again it is more resource efficient not to have a request every time a user clicks into a dropdown. One compromise might be to put the options into a hidden HTML field and load them dynamically into the correct place when a user clicks a dropdown
