Can you start a filename with a $? - php

I've never even considered this before, but one of my clients is trying to name a file starting with a $; $template.php.
Is this allowed?
I'd like to be able to give him a reason if it's no allowed?

That depends entirely on what filesystem you're using. You can start a filename with $ on all of the major filesystems I know of — FAT, FAT32, NTFS, ext2, ext3, ext4, ... (Huh. My experience of file systems is actually quite limited. Interesting.)
Remember that if you're doing this from PHP, you need to be sure you're not using a string literal in double quotes, because within a string literal in double quotes, $ introduces a variable. If you're using a literal $, either use single quotes or escape it with a backslash.

Special characters in batch files are a pain, but I haven't found the right workaround for properly escaping the first two characters of this particular string I'm trying to pass the application.

Things I have tried:

Still when passing the last one it doesn't accept the login, I don't know what the final output is. That got me thinking maybe it was trying to do another expansion when passing the parameter to the application, so I quoted that as well.
SET "pass=^&AntiBatchfileString"
A_Program.exe "/pass=^^%pass%"
It's still not working, I'm not sure what I'm missing at this point.
Supposing you want the string ^&AntiBatchfileString literally, this is the best set syntax, as most special characters (^ & ( ) < > | and also the standard delimiters , ; = SPACE TAB) lose their particular meaning as soon as ther are placed in between "", and the "" themselves do not become part of the variable value:
set "pass=^&AntiBatchfileString"
This works only as long as the command extensions are on, which is the Windows default anyway (type cmd /? and see the /E option).
When expanding (reading) a variable like "%pass%" (with enclosing ""), special characters are still treated literally.
However, as soon as you expand it like %pass% (no ""), they get back their special meaning. So you have the following options:
Use set "pass=^^^&AntiBatchfileString", where ^^ escapes the literal ^ and ^& the literal & when reading like %pass%.
Enable delayed expansion (see set /? about how it works and setlocal /? or cmd /? about how to enable it), where the variable value is expanded (read) at a point of time where parsing of special characters has already been completed.
I prefer the latter approach, because no special escaping is necessary, and it can also deal with " appearing in the string value (even if unsymmetrically present).
By the way, " can also be escaped by ^", as long as this does not appear within unescaped "".
Nevertheless, % signs cannot be escaped like ^% in a batch file, because percent expansion happens before escaping, but you need to double them like %% to get one literal one each, independent whether or not the string is in between "".
Note that on the console, %% does not work.
Finally, literal ! are consumed by the delayed expansion feature when enabled, therefore you need to pay particular attention to those in case, by escaping them like ^!, or also by intelligently toggling delayed expansion (hence to enable it only when it is actually needed and to disable it otherwise, when a literal string is provided, like in a set command line, for instance, when expanding a standard variable like %pass% and when reading a for variable like %%I (batch file) or %I (console), for example). Of course this is also not the ultimate solution, because you need setlocal and endlocal to enable/disable delayed expansion, which are intended to localise environment changes, so any variable changes since the most recent setlocal command are lost as soon as endlocal is executed (there are some tricks for passing a variable value over the endlocal barrier though).
If you want to use % as a string without escaping in a batch file:
Like %20, you can use %%%20.

What does it mean to escape a string?

I was reading Does $_SESSION['username'] need to be escaped before getting into an SQL query? and it said "You need to escape every string you pass to the sql query, regardless of its origin". Now I know something like this is really basic. A Google search turned up over 20, 000 results. Stackoverflow alone had 20 pages of results but no one actually explains what escaping a string is or how to do it. It is just assumed. Can you help me? I want to learn because as always I am making a web app in PHP.

Escaping a string means to reduce ambiguity in quotes (and other characters) used in that string. For instance, when you're defining a string, you typically surround it in either double quotes or single quotes:
"Hello World."
But what if my string had double quotes within it?
"Hello "World.""
Now I have ambiguity - the interpreter doesn't know where my string ends. If I want to keep my double quotes, I have a couple options. I could use single quotes around my string:
'Hello "World."'
Or I can escape my quotes:
"Hello \"World.\""
Any quote that is preceded by a slash is escaped, and understood to be part of the value of the string.
When it comes to queries, MySQL has certain keywords it watches for that we cannot use in our queries without causing some confusion. Suppose we had a table of values where a column was named "Select", and we wanted to select that:
SELECT select FROM myTable
We've now introduced some ambiguity into our query. Within our query, we can reduce that ambiguity by using back-ticks:
SELECT `select` FROM myTable
This removes the confusion we've introduced by using poor judgment in selecting field names.
A lot of this can be handled for you by simply passing your values through mysql_real_escape_string(). In the example below you can see that we're passing user-submitted data through this function to ensure it won't cause any problems for our query:

mysql_real_escape_string($password));
Other methods exist for escaping strings, such as add_slashes, addcslashes, quotemeta, and more, though you'll find that when the goal is to run a safe query, by and large developers prefer mysql_real_escape_string or pg_escape_string (in the context of PostgreSQL.
Some characters have special meaning to the SQL database you are using. When these characters are being used in a query they can cause unexpected and/or unintended behavior including allowing an attacker to compromise your database. To prevent these characters from affecting a query in this way they need to be escaped, or to say it a different way, the database needs to be told to not treat them as special characters in this query.
In the case of mysql_real_escape_string() it escapes \x00, \n, \r,\, ', " and \x1a as these, when not escaped, can cause the previously mentioned problems which includes SQL injections with a MySQL database.
For simplicity, you could basically imagine the backslash "\" to be a command to the interpreter during runtime.
For e.g. while interpreting this statement:
$txt = "Hello world!";
during the lexical analysis phase ( or when splitting up the statement into individual tokens) these would be the tokens identified
$, txt, =, ", Hello world!, ", and ;
However the backslash within the string will cause an extra set of tokens and is interpreted as a command to do something with the character that immediately follows it :
for e.g.
$txt = "this \" is escaped";
results in the following tokens:
$, txt, =, ", this, \, ", is escaped, ", and ;
the interpreter already knows (or has preset routes it can take) what to do based on the character that succeeds the \ token. So in the case of " it proceeds to treat it as a character and not as the end-of-string command.

In PHP, how do I express a string literal on multiple lines without the new lines appearing in the rendered text?

Sometimes in PHP when I need to assign a large string literal to a variable, I break the quoted string into multiple lines so it can be read without scrolling 300 characters to the right. My problem is that PHP includes the new-line in the actual string when it is rendered in the application. Is there any way to escape the new line or is there a better way of expressing a string literal on multiple lines? I'm aware that I could use concatenation, but I was hoping for a more elegant solution.
Running on Debian if it matters.

Accessing a defined constant returns messed up characters

This is strange I have a constant defined as such:
define("RJ_FILES_PATH", RJ_SITE_DIRECTORY."\assets\files\\");
However when I try to access the constant in code I get this weird result on my localhost..
C:\wamp\www\my.app\assetsiles\2688
The \f is replaced by a square indicating it as an unrecognised character. Whats happening because of this I am unable to save files to the folder the constant is supposed to point to.
You need to escape the backslashes before the a and the f:
define("RJ_FILES_PATH", RJ_SITE_DIRECTORY."\\assets\\files\\");
Otherwise they're interpreted as escape codes, since they're within a string. (Just like \n is a newline, et cetera.)
You could—and probably should—just use forward slashes (/) in your file/directory paths. PHP will automatically convert them to the value of the built-in system-dependent constant DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR when using the string as a file path. This is by far the most cross-platform method of doing it.
Alternatively, you could use single quotes. They interpolate backslashes (\) differently in that most escapes are ignored and just interpreted literally (the exceptions being \\ and \').

You should escape the backlash by double it: \
In my opinion, you always should use '/', because it work fine in windows and linux. In php, there's a constant DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR but it's uneccesary because '/' work fine.

How to use $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']

Is there any difference between typing:
<?php echo $_SERVER[REQUEST_URI] ?>
or
<?php echo $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] ?>
or
<?php echo $_SERVER["REQUEST_URI"] ?>
?
They all work... I use the first one.
Maybe one is faster than the other?
Without quotes PHP interprets the REQUEST_URI as a constant but corrects your typo error if there is no such constant and interprets it as string.
When error_reporting includes E_NOTICE, you would probably get an error such as:
Notice: Use of undefined constant REQUEST_URI - assumed 'REQUEST_URI' in <file path> on line <line number>
But if there is a constant with this name, PHP will use the constant’s value instead. (See also Array do's and don'ts)
So always use quotes when you mean a string. Otherwise it can have unwanted side effects.

The first one is wrong - you're actually looking for a constant REQUEST_URI that doesn't exist. This will generate a notice-level warning.
There's no difference between the other two.
There is a difference between single and double quotes in PHP string handling. A string enclosed in double quotes will be evaluated for embedded variables and escape characters (e.g. \n); a string enclosed in single quotes won't (or not as much).
So, for example,
$hello = "world";
echo "Hello $hello!\n";
echo 'Hello $hello!\n';
echo 'Done';
will output
Hello world!Hello $hello!\nDone
In situations where you have no escape characters or embedded variables, it is slightly more efficient to use single quotes as it requires less processing of the string by the runtime. However, many people (me included) prefer to use double quotes for all strings to save confusion.
As a caveat to Gumbo's answer the third representation - double quotes - actually makes PHP look for variables inside that string. Thus that method might be a little slower (although in a string of 11 characters it'll be negligible - it's better practice not to make PHP do that however).
When PHP comes across plain strings being used as array keys it checks if there is a constant with that name and if there isn't it defaults it back to an array key. Therefore, not using quote marks causes a slight performance hit and there is a possibility that the result will not be what you expect.
$_SERVER[REQUEST_URI]
is syntatically incorrect and AFAIK will not run on a default installation of PHP5. The array index is a string so it needs to be passed on strings. I know PHP4 converted undefined constants to strings inside the square brackets but it's still not good practice.
EDIT: Well unless you define a constant called REQUEST_URI, which you haven't in your example script.
$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']
is the standard method and what you should be using.
$_SERVER["REQUEST_URI"]
also works and while not wrong is slightly more work for the PHP interpreter so unless you need to parse it for variables should not be used. (and if you need to do so, you need to rethink that part of your program.
