.htaccess being ignored when under SSL / port 443 - php

I have rather basic htaccess document that forwards the request to be handled by a php file.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /controller.php [L]
This works fine when browsing normally. However, if I switch to using https it no longer will listen to anything in the htaccess document.
I am just wondering is this a server configuration issue and what can be done about it?

You should ensure that content is loaded from the same directory as for non-ssl version. In some configuration for example default for http is public_html directory and for https private_html directory. .htaccess should work without any problem if content is loaded from the same directory in both cases

Found the issue!
It was a httpd.conf issue with the AllowOverride being set to None instead of All. With this set to None it wouldn't allow htaccess to work over SSL port
Found from: https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=31351
"Open the Apache configuration file located at /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
Change AllowOverride None to AllowOverride All inside the DocumentRoot Directory Directive, normally "

.htaccess file not rewriting URL's correctly when project is in subdirectory

I currently have a problem with rewriting my URL's using the .htaccess file when a Laravel project is in a subdirectory.
usually when not in subdirectory having /vacancies -> /index.php/vacancies using this below .htcaccess file works.
<IfModule mod_negotiation.c>
Options -MultiViews
</IfModule>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteLog "/var/log/httpd/rewrite.log"
RewriteLogLevel 3
# Redirect Trailing Slashes If Not A Folder...
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ /$1 [L,R=301]
# Handle Front Controller...
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^index.php [L]
# Handle Authorization Header
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} .
RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]
Though now the project exists within a subdirectory I require the URL to be re written as so /vacancies -> /abc/index.php/vacancies.
The home page works correctly though any links just return a not found error.
What changes would I need to have the .htaccess file do this for me.
so on investigating further upon entering 'index.php' into the url itself the page loads correctly if this helps anymore with answering the question.
Thanks!
I wouldn't modify the default .htaccess provided in a Laravel app. You need to use Apache's directory alias in the virtual host config file for your site. You need to have the following format:
#Change the paths accordingly
Alias /vacancies /path/to/app/public
<Directory /path/to/app/public>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
Require all granted #If using Apache 2.4 add this.
</Directory>
I managed to fix this thank you for your suggestions, This turned out to be a problem with the virtual host file and where the project was created as I have soft links let up to direct apache.
As such Apache was looking in the actual project location set in the virtual hosts file rather than the soft link one intended causing the not found issues.
Check of .ht* permissions in the apache httpd config file if you are using apache. I had the same problem and I had permissions denied problem for .htaccess file. If you are on shared host, try to contact hosting support.
Tried putting it on top of the htaccess file ? Helps for me in some kind of cases, seems weird but it does.
I notice fro your answer you've managed to "fix" this. However, you have some fundamental errors in the .htaccess file you posted, so I'm not sure how this is working exactly?
RewriteLog "/var/log/httpd/rewrite.log"
RewriteLogLevel 3
These two directives are not valid in .htaccess files and consequently will result in a 500 Internal Server Error. These can only be used directly in the server config or virtual host context. These are also Apache 2.2 directives, so won't work on Apache 2.4.
RewriteRule ^index.php [L]
(Part of the "front-controller"). You are missing a space between the first and second arguments, so this will fail to rewrite any requests to index.php - your "front-controller". (Maybe this is just a typo, but it's difficult to see a typo like this could creep in?) For example, this should be more like:
RewriteRule ^ index.php [L]
# Handle Authorization Header
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} .
RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]
These directives should be before the front-controller, not at the end of the file. Otherwise, they are not going to execute for any request that is routed through your framework.
when not in subdirectory having /vacancies -> /index.php/vacancies using this below .htcaccess file works
That's not actually what the above .htaccess code does. It should simply be rewriting the request to /index.php. (The frawework/Laravel then looks at the full URL that was requested.) If it rewrote the URL to /index.php/vacancies (that some frameworks do) then you would need to read the URL using pathname information (PATH_INFO).
Though now the project exists within a subdirectory I require the URL to be re written as so /vacancies -> /abc/index.php/vacancies.
See above regarding the PATH_INFO. But if the .htaccess file is located in the document root of the site and the /abc subdirectory should be entirely hidden then you still have some work to do. You'll need to set the appropriate RewriteBase and modify the condition that removes the trailing slash off non-directories.
Otherwise, if the /abc directory is part of the URL then the .htaccess file can be moved to the /abc subdirectory, but you'll still need to modify the directives that remove the trailing slash.

Codeigniter routing is not working with following procedure

I want to do routing in code-igniter and i have done the below steps also
but it is not working.I have done all the required settings also but then also
its not working.Please let me know is i am missing any thing or not.
Step 1
Add This in .htaccess file
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
#RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^ index.php [QSA,L]
</IfModule>
Step 2:
Remove index.php in codeigniter config
$config['index_page'] = '';
Step 3
Add this in route.php
$route['Viewsignup'] = 'Login/index/Viewsignup';
My url is like that:
http://localhost/machinetest/index.php/Login/Viewsignup
I want this url:
http://localhost/machinetest/index.php/Viewsignup
Please help me,
Thanks in Advance
.htaccess should not be issue here. Try this
$route['Viewsignup'] = 'Login/Viewsignup';
This will take you into Login controller's Viewsignup method when your URL looks like http://localhost/machinetest/index.php/Viewsignup
And for removing index.php from URL just update your .htaccess with following
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L]
Now http://localhost/machinetest/Viewsignup URL will work too
On some servers, Apache is configured to ignore some or all directives in .htaccess files. This is for security reasons. The AllowOverride directive controls which features will be allowed in .htaccess files. For example AllowOverride None can turn off htaccess files for a folder and its subfolders.
Check your Apache configuration file for which AllowOverride directive is applied to the directory containing your problem htaccess file.
If you’re not sure which configuration file to look in, start with the main Apache configuration file httpd.conf or apache2.conf. If your website is configured in a file included by httpd.conf (e.g. a virtual hosts configuration file), you will need to look in that file. See Location of httpd.conf on CentOS, Ubuntu, Mac and others to locate your httpd.conf.
To enable using a .htaccess file, change AllowOverride None to AllowOverride All.
For example, for a CentOS 5.3 server, I needed to change the AllowOverride setting in the file /etc/httpd/conf.d/virtualhosts.conf.
httpd.conf before:
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
httpd.conf after:
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Be aware that enabling htaccess files has security implications, as htaccess files override your Apache configuration. For example, if your site provides uploads, a hacker could potentially upload a .htaccess file to your server and use it to gain access to your server. There are options to AllowOverride that restrict the directives that will be used from a .htaccess file. See the documentation for AllowOverride.

htaccess not redirecting in codeigniter

i am new in php & codeigniter.i am working on a project which was running in a server abcd.comand i am using htaccess code like this
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|resources|robots\.txt)
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L,QSA]
now my project has been moved to another server 192.000.000.000.i can access the login page, when the user is logged in session is getting set and it is redirecting to 192.000.000.000/myproject/user and here i am getting 404 error
i have been set base_url in config.php is like this
$config['base_url'] = ((isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && $_SERVER['HTTPS'] == "on") ? "https" : "http");
$config['base_url'] .= "://".$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'];
$config['base_url'] .= str_replace(basename($_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME']),"",$_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME']);
$config['index_page'] = '';
my WINSCP Project structure
old one : /home/my_org/public_html/prjFolder
new one : /var/www/html/prjFolder

system/
application/
user_guide/
index.php
.htaccess
if anyone find solution please help me..
You mention that your project was moved to another server. Did you check if the AllowOverride directive (assuming you're using Apache as your web server) is set in your virtual host? If this is disabled, Apache will simply ignore your .htaccess file. A quick test is putting some nonsense in your .htaccess file that would certainly generate an error. If you don't get a server error, your .htaccess file is being ignored.
Link:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html#allowoverride
Another cause could be that the mod_rewrite module is not enabled (again, assuming you're using Apache). You don't say if your pasted .htaccess code is your complete .htaccess file, so I don't know if it's checking if that module exists. A simple test to check if this is the cause, is trying the resulting url of the rewrite: 192.000.000.000/index.php/myproject/user
Link:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mod_rewrite.html
I am assuming you don't have any errors in your .htaccess file, since you seem to say that it worked fine before the move.
I think your problem in the destination pointed by your rewrite rule
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L,QSA]
If you are accessing your project through the URL
192.000.000.000/myproject/user
The rewrite rule will change this to
192.000.000.000/index.php/myproject/user
You need to modify your rewrite rule to exclude myproject/user from the url to be pass to index.php or you can just remove the .htaccess if this is only a dev machine, the reason my we hide the index.php is so that the url will look pretty. Having it on the dev environment wouldn't hurt at all.
I find the solution , It is the problem of apache rewrite_module. I changed my httpd.conf file and now its working perfect.
Change AllowOverride None to AllowOverride All
<Directory "/var/www/html">
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
and Restart the Apache daemon using putty # service httpd restart

htaccess rewrite - not rewriting to index.php

I have three web servers on three separate computers. I am trying to install a php application that rewrites all url requests to index.php (front controller pattern). The following .htaccess works on two out of the three web servers:
RewriteEngine On
# Redirect everything to the Front Controller
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule !^(css|images|files)/ index.php [NC,L]
So, when I visit http://example.com/hithere, index.php is called and I can then parse the originally requested url (hithere) to figure out what controller to send it to.
However, for some unknown reason, the above .htaccess file doesn't work on the third webserver. Instead, when I access http://example.com/hithere, I get a 404 not found error in my browser that says this:
The requested URL /full/path/to/application/index.php was not found on this server.
So, based on the above error, I can tell that it's actually trying to redirect to index.php. But the file that the browser lists in the /full/path/... below is actually on my web server - so I have no idea why it can't find it. Could someone please help me and tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Edit: I don't know if something in the httpd.conf could be conflicting, but here are the settings I have in httpd.conf for the directory that this application is in
Alias /myapp /full/path/to/my/app
<Directory /full/path/to/my/app>
Order allow,deny
AllowOverride All
Allow from all
</Directory>
Edit 2: I noticed something peculiar in the Apache logs. It looks Apache is appending index.php, which I am trying to redirect traffic to, to the DocumentRoot:
File does not exist: /document/root/full/path/to/my/app/index.php
When it should be going to:
/full/path/to/my/app/index.php
So I basically need to tell htaccess to ignore the document root. I tried this by specifying this in my .htaccess file:
RewriteBase /full/path/to/my/app/
But it's still searching the document root for index.php :/ Is there a way to reset the DocumentRoot or tell htaccess to ignore it when rewriting to index.php? Even when I use the absolute path in the RewriteRule, it still appends it to the document root.
RewriteEngine On
# Redirect everything to the Front Controller
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule !^(css|images|files)/ /full/path/to/my/app/index.php [NC,L]
It doesn't make sense to me... Can someone please help?
Thanks

Assuming it's a *nix alike system, you might want to check file permissions and make sure that the webserver has read access to the file.
You also need to check the DocumentRoot parameter in httpd.conf
Look for something like this in the file and make sure it's correct. That is also where apache will be getting it from.
DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/path/to/whatever"
Also I would disable SELinux if it's on and you really don't need it because it causes weird problems too.
First enable rewrite module in apache by using $ sudo a2enmod rewrite then restart web server by $ sudo systemctl restart apache2
Put following code in your virtual host.
<Directory /var/www/html/your_app_folder>
Order allow,deny
AllowOverride All
Allow from all
</Directory>
then add following code in your .htaccess file
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L]
</IfModule>

How do you keep .htaccess from being used in a particular directory?

I have a website, lets say: http://www.example.com/
I'm using rewrite module, but I have a subfolder forum.example.com
I don't want the .htaccess to affect this directory, how do I do it?
If your forum.domain.com points to a subdirectory like you suggested (and your current .htaccess file is in the directory that contains that subdirectory, or some directory above it), then all you have to do is add a .htaccess file in the subdirectory with the following:
RewriteEngine Off
And it will disable mod_rewrite for any requests that point to that directory.
In httpd.conf:
<Directory /relevant/directory>
AllowOverride None
</Directory>
See the documentation.
It is probably easiest to precede the RewriteRule with a RewriteCond directive
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com$
This way, the RewriteRule is only applied to requests matching the RewriteCond, which required the HTTP host header to match www.domain.com.
(assuming Apache 2.2; I'm not sure whether this syntax is different for previous versions).
Set AllowOverride directive in the subdomain virtualhost to None
You could use a RewriteCond to only apply your rule when a particular domain name is used.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.comt$ [nocase]
RewriteRule foo bar [l]
