Best way to upload images to another server in php - php

I need to upload an image to another server once it's been submitted by a user. I have 3 ways to accomplish it.
Upload the image to the primary server and then upload it to another server via ftp.
Upload the image to the primary server and store it somewhere in the temp folder. Then, run a cron script to upload images from the temp folder to another server.
Have a php script which would accept images uploaded directly to another server.
Please note, I need to store image references and some metadata in the primary server database. So, by keeping that in mind makes me automatically drop the 3rd choice from the list. Since, it's hard to get the uploaded image file name from another server once it's there.
The first one, is a good one since I can generate the file name before I upload it to another server and once it's there I can easily save the required data into the database. The obvious drawback here is that this requires extra patience for the user while the image is being uploaded first to the primary server, then to another server.
The second method seems the best one for me, since the image will be uploaded to another server unnoticeable for users. The only thing bothers me is that the url for the uploaded image will be changed once the cron uploads the image to another server. Not sure what side effects might come up later because of this.
Has anybody done something similar before? If yes, please share your experience with me.
Thanks a lot!

Where to store user uploaded pictures on a single server

I have seen many questions concerning the storage of user uploaded image files onto a web application, but most of these are dealing with the following:
Indexing of the images, so as to retrieve them later
How to store them (on the server itself as a file or in the database)
I have a question in regards to this subject, but the question is:
In what directory do I put the uploaded image file? (or other file type, for that matter)
I have a small group I am running php apps for. There is very little files that get uploaded, but nontheless, they get uploaded.
I currently have them in my public html document root under /var/www/images/* , however I am told that it is not smart to store your user uploaded content straight to the /var/www/* directory and that it should be stored elsewhere.
However I cannot find a straightforward statement of where "elsewhere" is.
Keep in mind I do not have a server farm where I can establish certain servers for specific purposes (such as uploaded user files).
Therefore, on a single webserver that hosts usual scripting files, etc. what is the best storage practice for such content?
Thank you.
I don't think there's necessarily a 'best practice' per se; anywhere on your server will be fine, so long as you're able to retrieve the images later on. Typically they'd go inside a folder under /var/www/images/.
Personally I'd recommend creating an individual folder to store these user-uploaded images in (as something like /var/www/images/user_uploads), so that they don't get confused with other images you might have uploaded directly to /var/www/images/ (such as backgrounds or core imagery).

PHP Uploading Files Until Server Full

I have one problem. People can upload files as attachment on my website to contact us/mail us (list displayed once uploaded etc). There is upload limit for one session, but if another one is created (it's more like random id) you can start over uploading to the server. So basically you can upload thousand files until the server is full.
Is there a possible way to prevent this? You can limit it for one IP or cookie, but I can have another one and this is still a problem.
Thank you

Upload Large file from My computer to S3 Server without editing php.ini

I want to upload a large file from My computer to S3 Server without editing php.ini. Firstly,I choose file from browse button and submit upload button and then upload to s3 server. But I can't post form file data when I upload a large file. But I don't want to edit php.ini.Is there any way to upload a large local file to s3 server?
I've done this by implementing Fine Uploader's php implementation for S3. As of recently it is through an MIT license. It's an easy way to upload huge files to S3 without changing your php.ini at all.
It's not the worst thing in the world to set up. You'll need to set some environment variables for the public/secret keys, set up CORS settings on the bucket, and write a php page based on one of the examples which will call a php endpoint that'll handle the signing.
One thing that was not made obvious to me was that, when setting the environment variables, they expect you to make two separate AWS users with different privileges for security reasons.
ini_set("upload_max_filesize","300M");
try this

Processing file in the users directory

I am writing a scripts that processes the .csv file. The script currently have to upload the csv file to the server in order to process it, and the user have to download the processed file which is a lot of work from a user.
My question is, is there a way to process files from the user's directory path without the user having to upload the file first? So the user will just browse to the file to be processed and the file will be save and processed in that path.
Thanks,
Sbo
Then the only option you have is to do it client-side. To do it client-side you thus have to use a client-side technology like Flash or JavaScript. The latter is probably the better choice. The following URL explains how you can do a client-side file upload: http://igstan.ro/posts/2009-01-11-ajax-file-upload-with-pure-javascript.html
You want to get access to user's computer? Forget it.
Only way to achieve it is to use Java Applets with special permissions in php you need to upload it, it can be uploaded to temp directory but you need to still upload it.
Java Applets need to be signed and has certificate to be accepted by user. There is no other way I know to get access to user's files.

Video Uploading: recommended process?

Hey just a quick question for anyone who has done this. I want to create a video tube site. I have done file uploads before but was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions on what I am planning to do.
The way I am planning is to have a folder in my web directory and to upload videos into the folder after virus scanning and checking mime. The video will then be converted and compressed using FFMPEG into flv.
I will change the name and store the video reference id in mysql so the file name can be fetched and served.
I will serve the files using HTTP_Download to a flash player
$dl = new HTTP_Download();
$dl->setFile("$path");
$dl->setContentDisposition(HTTP_DOWNLOAD_ATTACHMENT, "$path");
$dl->setContentType('video/flv');
$dl->send();
Anyone have any suggestions? Is it a good idea to put all videos in one directory?
You may want to consider a Java based uploader as PHP can run into timeout problems on large uploads.
Also do you FFMPEG processing as a CRON job not at upload as it takes a long time.
Look in something like Wowza Streaming Server to serve the videos. Allows streaming and everything is above the root. I name each video with a UID and send a parameter to the Flash video player to decide which one to play.
Where and how you store them will largely depend on how secure they need to be (i.e. should people be able to access the files in the directory directly? or should it be stored more securely than that?)
If direct access is fine, then putting them all in one folder is okay. If not, then you may want to obscure folder names, store them in a secure Database, or in a folder that is not accessible outside of the server.
Also, I'm hoping you're aware of the massive amounts of storage space and bandwidth such a service will consume? I hope you have a scaled solution ready to deploy if you're really serious about this..
