Is it possible to be running a 64-bit version of PHP on a 32-bit version of WAMPserver?
Here's why I ask...when I go to my index.php page, it states that I am running WAMPServer version 2.4.
When I click on phpinfo it states that the Architecture is x64.
However task manager shows the process name is wampmanager.exe *32.
How can wampmanager.exe be 32-bit if php is x64?
WAMPServer is an installer of software, it allows you to download Apache/MySQL/PHP in a pre-configured state so that it runs out of the box without you needing to know anything about what you are doing with Apache/MySQL or PHP. Appropriate really in the circumstances.
wampmanager.exe is part of the tool. It is in fact aestan.exe a general purpose exe that accepts commands to dynamically create a tray icon with menus, and perform actions based on clicking those menu items.
wampmanager.exe is a 32bit executable, regardless of wether you installed WAMPServer 32bit or 64bit.
WAMPServer comes in both 32bit and 64bit versions.
This in fact denotes the compiler used to compile Apache/MySQL and PHP. So if you have the 32bit WAMPServer, you have Apache/MySQL and PHP ALL COMPILED with a 32BIT compiler. If you have WAMPServer 64bit, you have Apache/MySQL and PHP ALL COMPILED with a 64BIT compiler.
Now you could mix and match as long as Apache and PHP were either BOTH 32bit or 64bit.
MySQL can be either as there is not direct interface between them. BUT I DONT ADVISE YOU TRY THAT. (KISS being best applied here)
To be honest there is no point in the 64bit WAMPServer (unless your are a real nerd ) if you are using it as it was intended i.e. a local testing environment, or even if you have foolishly used it for a live website environment, as, PHP(64bit) is not a complete port yet and as denoted on the php.net website, is still considered EXPERIMENTAL
WampManager is only a 32-bit form interface for manage other service (Apache, MySQL, etc.). WampManager "start" and "stop" a 64-bit Apache service (httpd.exe) with 64-bit PHP DLL.
I did figure out what the issue was. (I got so far off track in this post I didn't even mention a main problem was the Aestan tray errors and WAMP would not start properly.) In the end, these two posts - Unable to enable PHP LDAP even though I have edited php.ini and php_ldap.dll is in the right place? and http://php.net/manual/en/ldap.installation.php ended up solving it. After completely uninstalling and resinstalling WAMP (downgraded to 32-bit on RiggsFolly advice as well, just to be safe) I found that the services refused to restart after trying to enable the ldap extension via the php.ini file. I executed the steps in the stack overflow post (first link above), when that didn't work, I found the libsasl.dll file was missing from the C:\wamp\bin\apache\Apache2.4.4\bin directory. I copied it there and bam everything started and my LDAP is working.

I have an application where i need to connect my web (PHP based) application with desktop application database so that both desktop and web can communicate with each other.
On ubuntu OS connectivity is working fine but when i comes to windows 7 codeigniter sql server connectivity is not working.
i tried visual c++ redistributional packages as well as other instructions provided on many platforms but fails.
i also added extensions in php\ext and dll files as well as include that extensions like sql_serv55_nts like that but nothing is working.
last error that i am receiving is
application not be run as php5.dll is missing .
can some one help to figure this out as soon as possible and can send me proper tested procedure for this.
As you say you have installed the sql_serv55_nts version of the SQLServer libraries, this is your problem.
Instead install the TS (Thread Safe) version of the SQLServer libraries. XAMPP on windows runs Thread Safe.
The php5.dll is the Non Thread Safe version of php5ts.dll which is supplied with the XAMPP install of PHP.
Once you install the TS version of SQLServer libraries delete the php5.dll it is not required, also you got it from a source that you cannot be sure is safe. A simple rule of thumb If it was required it would have come with the XAMPP install.
NOTE: You should never need to copy anything related to Apache/PHP/MYSQL into the Windows system folders. If you do, when you come to install another version of XAMPP it will still be there and will cause you hours of debugging to find out why you are having odd issues.
ALSO: It is also dangerous adding anything XAMPP or WAMPServer related to the Windows PATH as this will also cause you issues when you come to update XAMPP/WAMPServer as you are bound to forget that this was done.
Try adding your php directory and your php extensions directory to your PATH environment variables.
I resolved issue in following way.
Install xampp with php 5.5
install microsoft re distributional package
download php5.ddl file from php5.dll
if window is 32 bit than just copy downloaded php5.dll into windows/system32
if you have 64bit window than you need to copy it into windows/SysWOW64 too.
best is to restart your PC
All done......
This is my issue and it has given me sleepless night.
I have been working on the wamp 2.1 server environment for the past 3 years and now i want to upgrade. I finally installed wamp 2.5 and would be willing to keep my previous wamp 2.1 version. everything looks good, because after installation, i did the following after:
Copied ?:\wamp_old\bin\apache to ?:\wamp\bin
Copied ?:\wamp_old\bin\mysql to ?:\wamp\bin
Copied ?:\wamp_old\bin\php to ?:\wamp\bin
Now, the issue is this:
Whenever i start the wamp server with the latest version, it works and the icon turns green. but whenever i try changing/switching back to the old version, all the services starts except the Apache. the icon stays orange and never turns green. whenever i click test port, it tells me your port 80 is not actually used. when i click on install service, i get this message: your port 80 is available, install will proceed. when i select remove service, it removes immediately. when i click start/resume service, nothing happens and it never starts.
What I want to achieve is this:
Some old joomla site were developed on the former wamp 2.1 and each time i tried accessing them via the new wamp 2.5, i see some deprecated functions and it display some chunks of codes. meanwhile, i have two projects that refuse to run on the old wamp 2.1, so i decided to run the 2.5. Presently, the system has wamp 2.5 running.
For 5 days now, i have been cracking my head and i have been stucked.. someone out there should please help me with a solution to run wamp 2.1 and wamp 2.5 together so i can switch version easily. or a probably solution will be appreciated.
Kind Regards !
You were on the right track copying the old Apache MySQL and PHP folders into the new 2.5 version.
Unfortunately switching to very old versions from the new ones is now a bit more hassle than it used to be because of the changes made in the version of compiler used to compile Apache and PHP.
Your old versions of Apache and PHP were compiled with MSVC6 and the new versions with MSVC11 and the 2 are not compatible i.e. an Apache compiled with VC11 wont run with a PHP compiled with VC6 etc.
So try this :-
Switch from Apache 2.4.9 to your old version, it wont start because the PHP version will still be 5.5.12.
Ignore the problem.
Now switch to an old version of PHP, thats compatible with the old Apache.
With luck it will now work.
Check you have the correct version by looking at phpinfo
If it does not come up re-do the switch to the old apache and then again to the old PHP by just re-clicking the version numbers on the relevant switch menu.
To be honest I don't know if it would be possible to restore everything to work fine. I had once similar problems - I had Wampserver and installed new PHP version for WAMP and switched to new PHP version and eveything stopped to work. I tried to change PHP version to the previous one but I had info it's not compatible with Apache and I couldn't change PHP version because of chosen PHP version.
Now I moved to easyPHP and it's much more easier, you can have many PHP versions, there's no problem with changing them.
Probably in your case the problem was not WAMP itself but PHP versions. That's why when you launched your older code you have many warnings. You should simple select older PHP version to do that or you simple have to turn off warning (maybe for other PHP version you had turned off displaying warnings by default?).
If I were you, I would move to easyPHP, dump your databases (if any) and move everything to easyPHP. Probably you won't make your installation of WAMPserver work so the other option is backup everything, dump your databases and reinstall WAMPserver but you can be almost sure similar problem occurs sooner or later when you will be switching between PHP versions.
After alot of brainstorming, I finally resolved the issue all by myself.
Though it may not look wise, but i believe it could go a long way to help others who are stucked in situations like this.
First, I started the wamp 2.5, changed all the versions to the latest ones, which is Apache, Mysql and Php... when the icon turned green, I decided to stop all services, uninstalled the services one after the other. (Apache and mysql) and exit the application by right clicking.
Secondly, I renamed the wamp which encapsulates the 2.5 version to wamp_2.5old and renamed the 2.1 folder back to wamp. i launched the wamp and installed the services back again..this time, it was a lower version. both php and apache had just one version while my sql had two. I made sure the right version of sql was selected and i installed it. I restarted all the services, the icon turned green and all my old website worked.
I tried the method vice-versa and all my latest projects worked. it might look challenging but thats my own way of discovering running multiple version of wamp.
Lastly, thanks to Özgür Eroğlu and Marcin Nabiałek.. they have been of helped.
Pleas help me flag this as useful for research..
vielen gluck.. good luck guys !
I now have a scenario where I need PHP to be 32bit (I need to connect to a 32bit COM object, no 64bit version is available for this particular one (Sage SDO)).
I want to keep MySQL as it is, 64bit, but how would I go about changing just PHP to 32bit without wrecking everything?
I have tried to simply drop in 32bit PHP in place of the 64bit, copying the php.ini file so the config is the same, but this doesn't work and the server won't start.
I am using WAMP 2.4 with PHP 5.4.12.
Am I better off ditching WAMP completely and doing my own custom build so that everything is the latest version?
I am afraid you would have to change Apache to 32bit as well as PHP. This is because Apache basically runs PHP as a subroutine in the WAMP setup so they both have to be compiled using the same compiler version and bit count.
MySQL you could keep as a 64bit version as PHP talks to MySQL through a TCP port and not directly.
However there is no great advantage to keeping MYSQL as 64bit as the 32 and 64 bit databases are interchangable as far as I know.
I would suggest you save your databases and site code and then uninstall the 64bit WAMP and the install the 32bit WAMP.
It is still the case that there are more extension available in the 32bit arena than there are in the 64bit, so this will also make your environement more flexible for the next time you need a less mainstream extension in your websites.
I started trying to create a website which uses PHP on an old computer (previously used by another programmer).
I wanted to test my PHP code without uploading it each time, so I downloaded Apache and installed it. I was starting to set Apache up when I discovered this computer already had Apache on it.
Now I had multiple versions of Apache, so I went into add/remove programs and got rid of Apache (which only showed up once in the list).
Unfortunately windows decided it would uninstall the old version and keep mine which was not functioning properly. Also for whatever reason it seemed to have kept a good few files from the old version, but not enough that I could actually use it in any way. I believe it just had some configurations files.
I thought I would copy my files from the new version into the old version and not replace anything so hopefully I would be able to run under the older configurations, but that didn't work.
At this point I just wanted to cut my losses, so I put all the versions of Apache in an archive so there was no way the computer could be using them. I also removed Apache from the windows startup and rebooted the computer after configuring one single version of the newer copy of Apache to supposedly run PHP.
The problem is upon startup I could immediately log in to localhost and apache was already running. Also when I opened Apache manually from the files I had left unzipped, it only gives me the option to start Apache (not an option to stop or restart implying it is not running) and when I click it, it says "The requested operation has failed!" which is less than helpful.
So anyway, I just want to be able to run PHP locally and now I don't feel like I can even successfully uninstall and start from scratch anymore. Does anyone know what I have to do to get this to work? Sorry for the long description, I wove such a tangled knot.
One way to solve is use a XAMP (Apache + MySQL + PHP) client like XAMPP http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html brings it all set up for you to use. The problem of conflict can be caused by any IDE (Netbeans for example) that already carries a version of Apache.
Try to configure config files of Apache case exist.
Assumption: Running Windows OS for development and linux for production environment.
My recommendation is to not mix the Windows and Linux worlds as while they can be made to behave after lots of work, it is usually more pain than good.
Instead, as a humble windows and linux user, download and install Virtualbox [https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads], a free open source virtualisation tool.
Then download a linux distribution of your choice and install that into a new virtual machine.
Configure the linux tools inside linux and leave your windows machine relatively untouched.
A useful linux service to install would be Samba - windows file sharing - you can use this to edit your code in windows using any IDE of your choice, while saving directly to linux and testing through linux. When happy, upload from the linux system (again like any other file uploader) and all will be well.
If you are deploying to a linux based environment in your production service then this will help you avoid common mistakes such as case-sensitivity trouble and many others.
Building and running this system is free and it will help teach you more about the linux environment you are deploying to also.
Equally, when you don't have the virtual machine booted, there's no services lying around exposing your computer to possible local network threats and consuming resources - as opposed to installing Apache on Windows where it will be using some resources all the time.
I have Windows 7 Enterprise and I want to run a web server on this computer and I wander what is the best web server would be in my case. I have several requirements to the web server.
It should be easy to install and set up the server. Just "click", "accept" and that's it.
It should support MySQL and PHP (with GET, POST, SESSION, and cookies).
I want to be able to install the server from CD or memory stick. In other words, I want to be able to download something on my CD and than use this CD to install the web server.
The server (software) should not occupy a lot of memory.
It should be possible to install the web server on Linux, Windows and MAC.
Install Z-WAMP. It has the latest versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP (with APC and phyMyAdmin). It's also portable so you can have it installed on a mem stick.
XAMPP is very simple to install and use.
Quoting:
Zend Server Community Edition is a fast and reliable PHP application stack. It is completely free, and you can use it in development, testing and production.
Further:
Eliminate wasted time spent on putting together your PHP stack piece by piece. Zend Server Community Edition includes everything you need, whether you’re using Windows, Linux or Mac OS X. The simple, native installers will set you up in minutes with:
Bytecode accelerator (Optimizer+)
Zend Data Cache
A certified PHP distribution
Zend Framework
Apache (or IIS integration)
MySQL (on Windows and Mac OS X)
Out-of-the-box connectivity to all common databases
Java code connectivity
Web-based PHP administrator console
Not quite sure if this is what you mean but take a look at AppServ it installs Apache, PHP and MySQL for you with one installation file.
If you combine requirement 1, 3 and 5 you make it extremely difficult.
There is not just one package that you can install on boot *nix and windows. Simply because they use a different Operating System with other drive mappings, libraries, etc.
But for Windows I recommend one of the XAMP/WAMP implementation (I'm not a Windows User). For Mac there is MAMP. On other *nix based systems I always used predefined packages or a manualy compiled amount of packages which does not meet your requirements.
Latest OSX has buildin PHP and Apache. You only have to enable Apache in your system pref panel. MySQL can be installed.
It's also possible to use XAMPP for osx. Can be installed from CD
As for Windows you can use WAMP or XAMPP. This package includes Apache, PHP and MySQL. Can be installed from CD.
Most Linux distro's have apache build in. And it's easy to configure PHP and MySQL for it. You can also use XAMPP for linux:
LAMP for linux
XAMPP for mac
and WAMP for win
Different gui almost the same thing easy to setup and configure.
The big advantages with WAMP are that you can easily switch PHP/Apache/MySQL version and toggle PHP settings + extensions, directly from the taskbar.
That's why I'm using it.
Note: Even though you can't download the latest PHP version from their site, it's very easy to install it yourself.
