I would like to find a RewriteRule that does this :
mysite.net/jqMAS/ or mysite.net/jqMAS => mysite.net/index.php?id=jqMAS
I used such a .htaccess file :
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php?id=$1
But unfortunately, it doesn't work (maybe mysite.net/index.php is itself redirected to mysite.net/index.php?index.php, etc. ?) : calling mysite.net/jqMAS produces a 500 Internal Server Error.
What RewriteRule should we use to do such URL shortening ?
Here is what the index.php page (I didn't mention the headers) looks like :
<body>
Bonjour <?php echo $_GET['id']; ?>
</body>
Try the following your .htaccess file, as it is the setup successfully used on my own website.
# Enable the rewriting engine.
RewriteEngine On
# Change requests for a shorter URL
# Requires one or more characters to follow the domain name to be redirected
RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z0-9-]+)/?$ index.php?id=$1 [L]
There are 2 htaccess files:
Keep your htaccess file within application folder as:
Deny from all.
and paste following code to your htaccess file outside the application folder:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?/$1 [L]
It is working perfect for me.
You need RewriteCond to stop rewriting for real files and directories:
RewriteEngine On
# if request is not for a directory
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
# if request is not for a file
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ index.php?id=$1 [L,QSA]

Give the following URL:
http://www.example.com/file_to_load/slug1/slug2/slug_n
I would like my .htaccess to load file_to_load.php (or whichever filename takes at position in the URL)
In addition, file_to_load.php is located one directory down from .htaccess
.htaccess
|_subdirectory
|_file_to_load.php
My current .htaccess is as follows (redirecting all requests to index.php):
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?params=$1 [NC]
How can I rewrite my .htaccess to perform the above?
You can to like this in subdirectory :
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ file_to_load.php?slug=$1 [L]
Hope this helps !
This is my first question:
I have created a URL Shortner Service in PHP.It works completely without any problem but there was a problem:
Someone who wants to access his url should type : MyDomain.com/go.php?u=key
Here i tried to remove .php extention by configuring apache and worked.Now it is like that:
MyDomain.com/go?u=key
but some services such TinyUrl.com works like that: TinyURL.com/key !!!!
How can i get this in php?
thanks a lot.
You basicly use mod_rewrite.
With mod_rewrite you can say that all requests which are like
www.example.com/[A-Za-z1-9]
are redirected to:
www.example.com/shorturl.php?key=$1
While $1 is the extracted variable from the requested URL.
There is no proper way to do it with pure PHP.
The rewrite rule could look like this:
RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z1-9]*)$ shorturl.php?key=$1 [L]
I would exclude files which really exists from the rewriting, use for this
RewriteCond.
This could be done like here:
# If the request is not for a valid directory
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
# If the request is not for a valid file
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
# If the request is not for a valid link
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l
RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z1-9]*)$ shorturl.php?key=$1 [L]
(Source: anubhava at RewriteCond to skip rule if file or directory exists)
create .htaccess file to redirect any request to your domain to one file lets say go.php
so in .htacess do like this:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ go.php?key=$1 [PT,L]
</IfModule>
This redirection any request like mydomain.com/userkey to mydomain.com/go.php?key=userkey
now in your index.php you can do your redirection login.
<?php
$key = $_GET['key'];
// your logic here.
?>
This ref will solve your problem.
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9]+)/?$ redirect.php?c=$1 [L]
</IfModule>
I have done this lots of time. But than also I am stuck here again (in a different server) and can not figure out what is the issue.
Completed htaccess editing
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /glt.me/CI/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /glt.me/CI/index.php/$1 [L]
</IfModule>
<IfModule !mod_rewrite.c>
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php
</IfModule>
rewrite module is enabled (as per customer care perons says)
Error :
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, cgiadmin#yourhostingaccount.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Test this case :
http://glt.me/CI/test
http://glt.me/CI/index.php/test
This is the simple way and it works fine for removing index.php from your url
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|uploads|css|js|lib|img|bootstrap|robots\.txt)
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /manage/index.php/$1 [L]
instead of manage put your own application folder name.
Use following htaccess code to remove index.php from your codeigniter url
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|images|robots\.txt|css)
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ ./index.php/$1 [L]
Though your client confirmed the rewrite module is working, what don't you confirm it yourself, make a php file on the root of the project with the code below and try to browse the file.
<?php
if( !function_exists('apache_get_modules')){
echo 'Rewrite module not available';
}else{
if(in_array('mod_rewrite',apache_get_modules()))
echo 'Rewrite module enabled';
}
First check whether your apache is supporting mod_rewrite. If yes then add a .htaccess file. My codeigniter .htaccess file is:
DirectoryIndex index.php
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|images|css|js|robots\.txt|favicon\.ico)
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ ./index.php/$1 [L,QSA]
Finally in your config file, change your base_url, remove index.php from that if you have added.
DirectoryIndex index.php
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ ./index.php/$1 [L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^pages/.*$ http://localhost/test/? [R=301,L]
I wanted to contribute here as I was having trouble myself. I'm using IIS5.1 for development only (Highly not recommended!)
1- Make sure that you config.php file has:
$config['index_page'] = '';
2- My app is not on the root folder, it's at localhost/CodeIgniter/. I updated config.php to:
$config['base_url'] = 'http://localhost/CodeIgniter/';
3- You need Mod-Rewrite capabilities. This is embedded with most servers, but IIS5.1 needs a separate tool. I used: IIS Mod-Rewrite by micronovae. It's free as long as you use it on localhost
I put the following code (Instead of CodeIgniter, put the name of the folder):
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $0 !^/CodeIgniter/(css|js|swf|images|system|tools|themes|index\.php) [NC]
RewriteRule ^/CodeIgniter/(.*)$ /CodeIgniter/index.php/$1 [L]
If your application is at the root, the code you should use would be simply:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond $0 !^(css|js|swf|images|system|tools|themes|index\.php) [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L]
Hope it helps.
Only three steps are require to remove index.php from url in Codeigniter in WAMP environment.
1) Create .htacess file in parallel to application holder and just copy past the following code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /CodeIgniter/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^system.*
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php/$1 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L]
2) Change $config['index_page'] to blank in config.php in application folder as below:
$config['index_page'] = '';
3) Enable “rewrite_module” of apache.
Restart your apache and its done.

I made a PHP framework that has a built in TPL system. It fetches the ending of the url, and finds the file that has that string. So if the url is http://website.com/tagHere the Tpl system would look for the file called tagHere.php. Everything works fine with it, but I'm now trying to expand the framework to have a built-in backend panel. I've tried multiple ways, but it just refuses to work.
I decided to take a look at Wordpress' htaccess, since they do exactly what I'm trying to accomplish. Here is how their htaccess works.
They check if the requested file name is a file. If it isn't a file, then they check if it is a folder. If it isn't a folder, they redirect to index.php. I want it to check if it's a file/folder, and if it isn't to remove the .php tag from the URL, so the TPL system can get the specified file and return it.
Here was my original .htaccess file.
RewriteRule ^(|/)$ index.php?url=$1
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9_-]+)(|/)$ index.php?url=$1`
Here is Wordpress' original .htaccess file.
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</ifmodule>
Here was my attempt:
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
RewriteRule ^(|/)$ index.php?url=$1
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9_-]+)(|/)$ index.php?url=$1
</ifmodule>
When I try the above htaccess, it returns a 404 error.
The Rule
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
Will always match every URL because it says something like "if there is a character in the URL, then redirect".
What you're looking for is something like this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^admin/(.*?)$ admin.php?location=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^(|/)$ index.php?url=$1
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9_-]+)(|/)$ index.php?url=$1
Currently I have the following .htaccess file
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ public/index.php/$1 [L]
</IfModule>
Which works allmost perfect.
It rewerites urls like http://domain.com/something/ to the public/index.php file, like a charm, except when it is a file, just like it should.
However http://domain.com (without any path appended) (there is no index.php in the root, so it gives a 404 at the moment) is not being rewrited, how can I change this .htaccess so it rewrites this url too?
The index file is in public/index.php I want it to load that file through the use of .htaccess
Thanks
I believe to rewrite the root, you can simply do something along the lines of:
RewriteRule ^$ location/of/root/file [L]
You could try:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ public/index.php
RewriteBase should prepend the rule pattern with a leading slash, forcing it to match the root path.
Untested!
What you have there is inspired by WordPress?? It's a bad idea as it tell Apache to always check if the path is a file or a directory before redirecting.
I have something like this
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^.*/(css|images|javascript)(.*) [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !\.(swf|ico|php|xml)$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !robots.txt
RewriteRule (.*) index.php?page=$1&%{QUERY_STRING} [PT]
The first condition restricts this redirect from working in specific folders.
The seconds does it for specific extensions.
You can guess what the third does :)
