Data like:

and what's this datatype?
The datatype is a non-standard protocol which exists only within the php-src scripting language.
To properly create a PHP value from a stored representation you would use the unserialize()` function provided by the SPL.
unserialize('a:2:{s:9:"usergroup";s:0:"";s:6:"verify";s:0:"";}');
unserialize() takes a single serialized variable and converts it back into a PHP value.
Couldn't have been that hard if you tried
print_r(unserialize('a:2:{s:9:"usergroup";s:0:"";s:6:"verify";s:0:"";}'));
Output:
Array
(
[usergroup] =>
[verify] =>
)

I got the following string:

I can't use
var_dump(json_decode($json))
because it doesn't return anything. I found 2 websites that where a bit usefull:
http://jsonlint.com/ for checking if the object is valid (what it ain't) and http://www.unserialize.com/ wich can 'unserialize' the json string back to an array.
Now I wonder what unserialize does to the json string. So I can use it in my script as well.
Looks like this is in serialized form. You need to use unserialize() function here.

I receive a really long json array like following:

I need to extract the name of the png which in this array is: 56f26f5862fb85.90873638.png. The value is the following context:
i:204;s:27:"56f26f5862fb85.90873638.png";
It would be really convenient if I could look the name after the 204 which is always fixec.
Any guidance or suggestion as for how to solve it is much appreciated.
That is a serialized PHP value, created using the serialize() function.
You can unserialize it using the unserialize() function:
$data = unserialize('a:2:{s:18:"_gravity [...] tal";s:5:"Total";}}');

This is a serialized string. You can unserialize it with this function: unserialize(), like this:

Unserialization can result in code being loaded and executed due to object instantiation and autoloading, and a malicious user may be able to exploit this. Use a safe, standard data interchange format such as JSON (via json_decode() and json_encode()) if you need to pass serialized data to the user.

I need to pass a php variable to a jquery function. the php variable is an array of unknown size. is there a way to pass each member of the array to be processed individually by the function?
I Guess you should use JSON to pass the php variable to jquery. its the easiest way to do that.
You can use JSON to print the array and parse that to receive a JS object.
I assume you use AJAX (directly printing into the javascript source is possible but ill-advised).
Your php script needs to print output directly:
print_r(json_encode($data_array));
And on the receiving end use $.parseJSON:
var data_array = $.parseJSON(ajax_result);
