I am pretty experienced with wordpress but having a hard time modifying some areas of Joomla templates,
the template is,
http://demo.joomla-monster.com/177-jm-web-development
I have already installed it and can access it administration area but I couldn't be able to find the area where I can modify the footer links , or slide show images under "our latest releases..." heading or the news in the left widget.
I have looked under Extensions -> Template Manager to modify the widget or footer but there is no such option.
Can anyone guide me ?
Your template has a position, see what position is the element that you want to edit.
http://demo.joomla-monster.com/177-jm-web-development
Look for the module in this position and edit it (for the banner). Menu footer likely to be edited in the "MENU", module in this position only displays menu items.
basic joomla https://docs.joomla.org/Portal:Administrators
You can also find the module position by adding ?tp=1 to the end of your URL. For example, if you are looking to edit a module and not sure what position it is just go to http://www.yoursite.com/?tp=1 and it will outline the name of your module positions.
To edit the footer links directly, if you go to menus, there should be a menu called "Footer Links" or something like that. You can modify/create links there.

I want to include one new module position inside the item.php of K2. Is it possible?
I want to add advertisement in that module (diff in different categories) .
This module should align left in the article and item image should align right in the article.
Please help me achieving this.
Thanks in Advance.
To load a module inside an article, simply give the module a custom position then add this code inside the article editor:
{loadposition xxx}
xxx = the custom position you gace the module.
If you are wondering how to give the module a custom position, then don't worry.
Instead of click Joomla 1.5's dropdown or Joomla 2.5's button, click inside the input box and type your own position.
You can then align the module as you wish, like you would normal text.
Hope this helps.
I am trying to make a simple drop down menu system for my Joomla site. But Joomla menu is completely confusing me. How does a joomla menu work?
For eg: In the image below the whole blue bar is a menu? or each item like 'Projects' is a menu?
Now I can make two pages for Project 1 & Project 2 but where will the 'Projects' link point to? If it does point somewhere then incase of no JavaScript I'd like to point it to a page that shows a list of the menu items.
How do I place my menu at this place in my template?
Why is there a default MainMenu and why do I need to use a menu to show the main content on my site. Shouldn't menus be used for making menus. And I only needed a menu item to show my content not that whole Main Menu. The main confusion is the Main Menu.
I don't wanna use a module coz I couldn't find a good one for 1.7 that uses jQuery (All JavaScript on my site is done with jQuery) and I read somewhere it can be made within the template.
All I want is to somehow place menu items lists inside the respective anchors up top so I can just show/hide them as dropdowns with jQuery.
I hope I haven't made the question confusing pointing to what I need to make. It's just that I'm super confused myself.
Please help.
I appreciate the help.
Thanks Alot.
Joomla menus are generated thru modules. In most cases mod_mainmenu. Theese modules you place in module positions. If your menue should be horizontal on top, then you put your mod_mainmenu module in the position "top". Be aware that every template uses different position names.
I'am new to Drupal, i just want to create a website which contains pages like about us, contact us and other static information that may be changed after a long time.
Now i can create the pages and sub pages to main pages. The links are displaying on the top of the logo and the sub pages were showing on the side of the main page.
i installed the dhtml_menu module but not working.
are there any changes required to dhtml_menu module to make work for pages?
or
i need to use any other module?
please help me to solve this issue
Thanks.
Your question is pretty confusing. If you just want to display the pages in a tree just like the administration menu (which seems to be what you're asking), then you don't need any extra modules.
Just create your pages and put them all in the primary menu. Then, once your pages are created add the Primary links block (in Administer, Blocks) anywhere you want. That block will display the navigation tree of your pages, just like the administrator menu does.
edit
Oh, so you want the drop down menus? Then you don't want dhtml_menu (which will only prevent unneccessary page loading when you open pages), but need something like simplemenu. Create your primary links, goto Administer, Site Configuration, SimpleMenu and set the "Menu" setting to "< Primary links >". That will display a drop down menu bar to navigate through your site...
First i need to say thanks to wimvds. "Thankyou wimvds for your edit it take me to find more modules and themes".
found the solution in a theme "admire_grunge" the drop down menu needs to be defined in the themes it self.
found some more themes that work like this.
Thanks.
I am currently teaching myself WordPress and working on my own CMS site.
My site will consist of approximately five pages where the header/sidebar menu/footer will be seen on all these five pages.
Beginner here and questions are as follows:
All these five pages will consist of different content, for example, every page will have a image banner representing the menu option just clicked, for example, "About Us" on page 5, "Promotions" on page 4 etc and then some text beneath that and then possibly some images inside a carousel set up.
Within WordPress, how would I tackle this, i.e. do I just create a page in WordPress, position the banner image at the top of the page, then have a few breaks and then insert the carousel of images - is this correct?
If not, do I need to create a separate php file called aboutUs.php that has this markup and then somehow link it to a WordPress page?
On my landing page of my site ONLY (page 1), just above the footer, I want to display a div section that displays all the sponsors of the website along with a URL to click to their websites - how would I go about doing this in WordPress?
Furthermore, with my menu, how do I link my menus to point to the WordPress pages relating to that menu option?
If you use the 'default' template that comes with WordPress you could do something like this to generate different content on different pages without creating separate php files (this would go in page.php):
<?php if(is_page('About Us')) { ?>
<?php $about_query = new WP_Query('category_name=aboutus-&showposts=1');
while ($about_query->have_posts()) : $about_query->the_post(); ?>
<?php the_content();?>
<?php endwhile;?>
Essentially, in this you could just create a post and an 'aboutus' category to reference it. The page of 'About Us' (referenced through is_page()) would contain the content you wanted to display.
First, some background. Wordpress has a number of ways to display stuff, such as images, text, and query results; here's a list:
THEMES
You can modify your theme files directly to do whatever you like. This will probably involve learning a lot about PHP and the Wordpress internals, but there are plenty of books, and the Wordpress Codex to help you. You can get themes from the Wordpress theme directory.
PLUGINS
There are huge numbers of Wordpress plugins, any one of which might fit your need. Plugins will require configuration, but generally won't involve learning PHP -- just how to install and configure them. Most of the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) plugins will allow you to place custom HTML in the templates (nominally for ad placement, but you can do anything you want with it). You can get plugins from the Wordpress plugin directory.
WIDGETS
The base Wordpress software and many plugins provide Widgets. A widget is a display element that can be docked in one or more widget areas. Typically a widget will be a chunk of HTML (often an unordered list) that has the theme's style sheet applied. Widgets are often used for ad placement, navigation elements (menus, dropdowns, breadcrumbs) or to provide tag clouds, category lists, calendars, etc.
SHORTCODE
A shortcode is a macro that can be placed in a page or post, that will return a chunk of HTML. Shortcodes can take parameters that will affect what the shortcode returns. The base Wordpress software provides some shortcodes, but many plugins will provide shortcodes as a way to get more functionality without the need for widgets or theme modifications.
With all of that in mind, here's my answer(s) to your question(s):
Modify your theme to include a page template, and add your image selection code to the template. Then create your individual pages, and then select your template while editing the page.
The 'landing page' can be any page (instead of the default blog index page); create a 'home' page and a 'home' page template that includes your advertisements. Alternately, use a SEO plugin to add the ads above the footer.
I don't know what theme or plugins you use, but generally you can configure a navigation menu to work from a list of pages, specifying either which pages to include or which pages to exclude. If your theme doesn't include this functionality, I'd recommend choosing a different theme.
Look into Wordpress "page templates". The Wordpress codex can help you understand this.
If you edit a post in WP you will notice the option to use a template. That is your goal. Learn how to work with them.
Wordpress themes are composed of multiple files. One of them is the header.php file which contains the header content. The footer.php file contains the footer and the sidebar.php contains the sidebar. These are the usual conventions. They're not strict. There will be a couple of main files which include these (e.g., index.php - Used for articles, page.php - Used to display pages etc.)
If I were making a setup like yours, I'd make five "pages" (using the backend) and then customise my page.php file to present it properly. I'd still keep the header, footer and sidebar separate from the page.php file since they'd be there for pages like 404s etc. as well.
Just put something in the content of the landing page to display this.
IF you're doing theme development, the right place to look at is http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development
Title says most of it.
I have inherited a Joomla site and the client wants part of the main template (a feature-type box) to be editable via the Joomla backend.
I guess really it is a content item that never gets displayed as its own page, but as a part of all pages.
Is that possible?
Thanks.
EDIT: By editable, I mean as a piece of content, not as editing the template HTML. I hardly expect non-tech users to get things right in a WYSIWYG text editor, much less change HTML code that could screw up the whole site.
The Custom HTML Module allows you to create, edit, and display your own free-form HTML on a Joomla site using a WYSIWYG editor.
In your administration control panel you can find the "Module Manager" under "Extensions" in the drop down navigation menu. There you can create this module, choose a position in your template to display it, and then select what sections of your site the module should be displayed on.
You want the content items module.
Content Items Module
This way a user can add content as normal using the standard content pages, but you as the developer can set the module up to show that content as a module only. You have a LOT of choices with the above module too, you can set individual, category, intro, main all that kind of thing. Dont link to the page or category and it wont be shown on the main site, just in the module :)
The joomla extension directory is full of great things.
Good luck
You can use a special component for Joomla to edit templates, any part of template, any Tag. See dewem template editor component
Joomla templates are always editable via the backend. Just got to Extensions->Template Manager->Select the template you're using to edit it->and then up in the toolbar there will options for editing the html or the css as well as many design (look) options over on the right. That is in Joomla 1.5.
