in __construct() in my controller I sent some data to my view by:
public function __construct(){
// code
View::share('messages',$messages);
// more code
}
In other method I want to change this value (action from user change it). I don't want to copy this part of code to every method in controller because code is not clear in my opinion.
Can I use something like:
View()->get('param');
If you have any ideas so please answer :)
You can retrieve a previously shared variable with shared():
view()->shared('param');

I'm currently creating an app with Codeigniter and i came up with this issue (and it's not the first time to be honest).
What i want is to set a value in a global variable in function "foo()" and the access it through function "bar" (which is called through ajax call from client side).
In short, i want this variable to be full when the user has visited the page (sth like a session).
Here's an example code of my controller and what i'm trying to achieve:
class Groups extends CI_Controller{
private $page_id;
public function foo($slug = FALSE){
$this->load->model('some_model');
$info = $this->some_model->get_info($slug);
$this->page_id = $info['page_id'];
}
public function bar(){
$this->load->model('some_model');
$info = $this->some_model->get_some_other_info($this->page_id);
//Some code in here
}
}
Any suggestions or best practices on achieve that?
I've tried searching the internet on that but i couldn't find something to start with. So if you have any suggestions on where to look at, feel free to do it!
Thanks
If i understand it right you will have 2 calls. One will be at page load where you want to store something and after that there will be an ajax call that will retrieve what you have stored. Because the 2 script loads are different you can only do it by storing the data to one of them: database/session/cookie/html session or localstorage.
Can't say anything about best practice because i dont know what you want to store and for how long so need a bit more info about your code (im guessing you want to store the "page_id"?).
I'm posting this after my hair has been ripped out, ran out of rum, and tried everything I can find on google. I've been developing a site using codeigniter which makes use of templates. I've built the backend first and all is working properly there. So now i've started on getting the front end working which is where I'm hitting the issue.
I've created a controller called pages.php which is going to parse the uri string of the current page, use my library to get the page data from the database, then display it. My pages are all created through an editor on the back end and stored in the database.
So here's the pages controller
class Pages extends CI_Controller {
public function __construct()
{
parent::__construct();
$this->load->library("pages");
}
public function display_page()
{
$page_slug = $this->uri->segment(1);
$data["joes"] = "Here's joes first variable";
$this->pages->get_page($page_slug);
}
}
and here's the error message i get when i hit my url like this demo.mydomain.com/joes-test
and here is how my routes are set up. $route['(:any)'] = 'pages/display_page';
My Pages.php library works perfect on the back end but it's a large file. I've only posted the get_page function below. If you need to see everything let me know. But i dont believe the issue has anything to do with the library itself.
public function get_page($slug){
$objPages = new pages();
$objPages->get_object('slug="'.$slug.'"');
return $objPages;
}
[EDIT] If i place the following inside my homepage controller it works. But the calling function needs to be inside the library.
$this->load->library('pages');
$the_page = $this->pages->get_page("joes-test");
I want to call $this->get_object("joes-test") but this doesn't work. get_object() is an inherited function inside the library.
Now oddly enough. The code i put above will NOT work if i do the exact same thing inside the pages controller
any help leading to a solution would be awesome. I'm under a time crunch and pay to get some assistance. Thanks in advance.
No you can't use the same name with controller and library. please choose another name. for example Mypages for you controller name.
change your routes
$route['(:any)'] = 'mypages/display_page';
then call your controller.
http://demo.mydomain.com/joes-test
I think there nothing wrong with library uri, because as codeigniter official website say: This class is initialized automatically by the system so there is no need to do it manually.
I don't know about lib pages, but how about use
$this->load->view(<file-html>);
and if you want to passing data in variable, you can add variable like this
$this->load->view(<file-html>, $data);
Hope this help, Cheers
In my controller i used this way. i want to pass a variable data to my index function of the controller through redirect
$in=1;
redirect(base_url()."home/index/".$in);
and my index function is
function index($in)
{
if($in==1)
{
}
}
But I'm getting some errors like undefined variables.
How can i solve this?
Use session to pass data while redirecting. There are a special method in CodeIgniter to do it called "set_flashdata"
$this->session->set_flashdata('in',1);
redirect("home/index");
Now you may get in at index controller like
function index()
{
$in = $this->session->flashdata('in');
if($in==1)
{
}
}
Remember this data will available only for redirect and lost on next page request. If you need stable data then you can use URL with parameter & GET $this->input->get('param1')
So in the controller you can have in one function :
$in=1;
redirect(base_url()."home/index/".$in);
And in the target function you can access the $in value like this :
$in = $this->uri->segment(3);
if(!is_numeric($in))
{
redirect();
}else{
if($in == 1){
}
}
I put segment(3) because on your example $in is after 2 dashes. But if you have for example this link structure : www.mydomain.com/subdomain/home/index/$in you'll have to use segment(4).
Hope that helps.
Use session to pass data while redirecting.There are two steps
Step 1 (Post Function):
$id = $_POST['id'];
$this->session->set_flashdata('data_name', $id);
redirect('login/form', 'refresh');
Step2 (Redirect Function):
$id_value = $this->session->flashdata('data_name');
If you want to complicate things, here's how:
On your routes.php file under application/config/routes.php, insert the code:
$route['home/index/(:any)'] = 'My_Controller/index/$1';
Then on your controller [My_Controller], do:
function index($in){
if($in==1)
{
...
}
}
Finally, pass any value with redirect:
$in=1;
redirect(base_url()."home/index/".$in);
Keep up the good work!
I appreciate that this is Codeigniter 3 question, but now in 2021 we have Codeigniter 4 and so I hope this will help anyone wondering the same.
CI4 has a new redirect function (which works differently to CI3 and so is not a like for like re-use) but actually comes with the withInput() function which does exactly what is needed.
So to redirect to any URL (non named-routed) you would use:
return redirect()->to($to)->withInput();
In your controller - I emphasise because it cannot be called from libraries or other places.
In the function where you are expecting old data you can helpfully use the new old() function. So if you had a key in your original post of FooBar then you could call old('FooBar'). old() is useful because it also escapes data by default.
If however, like me, you want to see the whole post then old() isn't helpful as the key is required. In that instance (and a bit of a cheat) you can do this instead:
print'<pre>';print_r($_SESSION['_ci_old_input']['post']);print'</pre>';
CI4 uses the same flash data methods behind the scenes that were given in the above answers and so we can just pull out the relevant session data.
To then escape the data simply wrap it in the new esc() function.
More info would be very helpful, as this should be working.
Things you can check:
Is your controller named home.php? Going to redirect(base_url()."home"); shows your home page?
Make your index function public.
public function index($in) {
....
}
I'm a newbie to codeigniter and I'm attempting to write a function that would basically save a name and url to session data whenever you visited a certain page, then report it back in a small widget on the screen.
It's supposed to work as a kind of history function for what pages have been accessed and in what order. So far when working with test data it works great! however I'm trying to figure out how I can call the "add" function on each page that is visited, so we can supply the name and url of that page that was visited. Is there any way to do this? Or is there any way to report back a set of variables such as a name and url for a page after you visit it?
For example: say I visit page1, page2, page3, and page6 and I want each of those to show up in my history function. On each of those pages I would load the history view, and I would want to call the history's controller function "add(name,url)" and fill it in something like this:
add('page1','page1.php')
But I know that you're not supposed to access the controller from the history because that's not the way it's supposed to be done, however I cannot think of any better way to do this. Any help would be appreciated.
I don't know why dont you call this on every controller.
but if you want to call a function of the current controller, you have to get the instance of the current controller this way:
<?php
$CI =& get_instance();
$CI->method($param);
?>
the easiest way to do this would be to put a method in the constructor of your class. that way it will always run first thing, no matter what you are doing. remember that anything you can do in the controller -- sessions, validation, etc -- you can do in a model.
function __construct() {
parent::__construct();
// load model that has page tracker methods
$this->load->model( 'pagetracker_m' );
// call the method to track the pages, and have it return the results
if ( ! $this->history = $this->pagetracker_m->_trackpage(); ) {
echo 'Error getting history ' ; }
} // end construct
function something() {
// pass history to $data, then use echo $history->firstpage, etc in view
$data['history'] = $this->history ;
// call your view etc
}
how do I make available some data for a layout/layout.phtml script without having to create a view script from a controller?
I've tried the following in indexAction function, but it does not work. When I do not create the view script I get an error. I could created empty one, but I don't like this solution much. Any better ideas?
$this->layout->content = "foo"
$this->_helper->viewRenderer->setNoRender(true);
Thanks in advance
You don't actually render some data you make the data available and then choose which script to render. Don't confuse the terminology.
What you have done there is stopped any script from being rendered by using the :
$this->_helper->viewRenderer->setNoRender(true);
When you do
$this->layout->content = "foo";
You are setting the property content, which you then neeed to make use in your layout script.
So then in your layout.phtml script (which I hope you have already configured to render by efault) you then just do this
echo $this->content
Notice that I don't actually use $this->layout because when you are inside the layout, $this equal $this->layout. The same goes for $this->view->foo is $this->foo inside your view.
I hope this helps.
Any questions just ask.
