How to use paypal IPN for membership website ( PHP ) - php

Using a PayPal button for recurring payments for my website's subscription service. I have created a log in system using emails and passwords. Once logged in the user can pay for the subscription ( A PayPal button appears ) Once they have paid for the subscription they get redirected to my ipn page, here I somehow want to update the users membership_status = 1 in my database, and if the user cancelled their payment I want it so the IPN will message the server and set the membership_status = 0 for example. I'm unsure as to the safest way to do this.
This is the php code given by paypal for the IPN page
<?php

// issues with array data in POST. Reading raw POST data from input stream instead.

Once they have paid for the subscription they get redirected to my ipn page
Really bad choice, redirecting users to IPN page, use Auto Return URL to bring back customer from Paypal to your website. More Information
here I somehow want to update the users membership_status = 1 in my database
Instant Payment Notification (IPN) is a message service that automatically notifies merchants of events related to PayPal transactions. Merchants can use it to automate back-office and administrative functions, like automatically fulfilling orders and providing customers with order status.
More Info
You can update the users membership_status in database according to payment status you receive in IPN from paypal, payment status e.g Completed, Pending, etc
if the user cancelled their payment I want it so the IPN will message the server and set the membership_status = 0
If user cancel payment, bring back the customer to website use Cancel URL more information but as there is no payment activity on Paypal if user cancelled so you will not receive any response through IPN
But as you are using recurring payments you can receive payment notification through IPN only in the case if your subscribed member cancelled existing membership.

How to get the Paypal IPN to capture Cancelled purchase to Mysql

What I am trying to do is get the payment_status in my database, to update to the word "Cancelled" when the visitor clicks on the cancel button to return to my website.
What I have, is a perfectly working IPN script with pages that work flawlessly when a purchase is completed. The database is filled out and my PHP page will display the details of the purchase (for my viewing only). I am seeking some help to alter this to say when it is cancelled as well.
Note: I got this online from somewhere (I don't remember where) and all I had to do was change my mysql connection information. Any help is appreciated.

IPN is for payment-impacting events, such as a new transaction, a refund, or a dispute.
A user choosing not to pay and "cancelling" their checkout, is not an IPN event. No IPN message will be sent to the IPN listener.
If a cancel_return variable was specified when redirecting the payer from your site to PayPal, that is where they'll return to. You can have that URL do something. It won't have anything to do with your IPN url, but you can reuse some of the same mysql code if you need to do a similar operation.
I solved this myself by using a session to wrap around the functionality.
I hope this helps anyone that comes across this question
The IPN sample you using is outdated. There is a need to confirm the receipt of the IPN to PayPal (otherwise it keeps resending it for a few days, you can check at the PayPal account IPN messages tab).
I just started to play around with IPN for a project, never used it before, maybe I am wrong, but my logic is:
Paypal sends the IPN.
Receive and verify. (Personally, I do not respond if the verification fails, as I believe if the message is from PayPal it should be valid).
Confirm IPN receipt.
I use the response if everything is okay, I mean verified.
So the code I use looks like this, and two lines should be added to yours:
if (strcmp ($res, "VERIFIED") == 0) {
// Reply with an empty 200 response to indicate to paypal the IPN was received correctly
header("HTTP/1.1 200 OK");

PayPal IPN not doing ANYTHING

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I've been trying to figure out for the past two days. I've read and re-read the PayPal documentation and it doesn't provide any help or insights whatsoever.
This is the IPN listener I'm using, this is the example script PayPal provides:
<?php
// CONFIG: Enable debug mode. This means we'll log requests into 'ipn.log' in the same directory.

What am I missing? All I want to do is verify that the payment is complete and then include PHP from another file. The IPN History in the sandbox account is showing that the IPN requests are being sent and are receiving HTTP 200 response.
payment_status is also definitely being sent as it's also shown in the IPN history.
Any help or pointers to some IPN tutorials that actually make sense, would be massively appreciated!
Thanks everyone!
Fixed!
PayPal required the connection to be SSL/Signed using the cacert.pem file. You can turn this off by changing
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, 1);
To
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, 0);
Thanks for your help guys!

Paypal IPN notification not being sent

At this moment in time I have no ssl cert. I have just ordered it and I need to set up a new web server as currently while I build this app I'm using my existing server with an addon domain. When I have finished it i will get my new dedicated server and SSL cert installed.
I am using the following button:
<form target="paypal" action="https://www.sandbox.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post">
<input type="hidden" name="cmd" value="_xclick">
<input type="hidden" name="amount" value="25">
<input type="hidden" name="item_number" value="1111">
<input type="hidden" name="currency_code" value="GBP">
<input type="hidden" name="custom" value="123456">
<input type="hidden" name="business" value="[my-business-paypal-email]">
<input type="hidden" name="notify_url" value="http://www.[mywebsiteURL].com/gdpripnh-exec.php">
<input type="hidden" name="return" value="http://www.[mywebsiteURL].com/upgrade.php">
<input type="submit" border="0" name="submit" value="Buy Now!" />
</form>
I have setup my Paypal IPN url in my Paypal developer control panel, as it didn't work I added the notify_url to the button.
I tried the ipn testing simulator andd got this error response:
IPN was not sent, and the handshake was not verified. Please review your information.

So I press the paypal button and get redirected to the paypal sandbox page where I login with a test account and make the payment. The payment is successful and I get returned to the page which I have specified. No IPN activity whatsoever.
Where I have put //good stuff happens here I am collecting information and entering it into my SQL database. I am also updating a log file which i use for testing. But nothing is happening.
I am baffled because i did get a log in giggdipn.log just one time. it stated:
[2016-02-26 17:27 America/Chicago] Can't connect to PayPal to validate IPN message: SSL connect error
I deleted it and tried again, just to see and now I do not get it at all.
So I googled and tried adding this:
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, 0);
still I get nothing.
Make sure the Url provides for the IPN response is accessible to the outside world.

error setting certificate verify locations - PayPal IPN Listener

Hi I am quite new to coding and trying my best to get out of my noob status
I got myself started with apache 2.4, mysql, php 5.6 on Windows 7
(I guess people call this WAMP, but it was only yesterday that I learned the existence of WAMP)
Anyways,
I am currently working on my own website that will eventually lead to payment by a user. Using, paypal, upon payment (the checkoutpage.php is set and has no problems), I need to update my mysql database. So, for past 10 days, I have been working on the ipn_listener.php file and now I understand the basic flow of this(I think).
However I keep getting this error as below.
error setting certificate verify locations:
CAfile: C:absolute\path\to\cacert.pem
CApath: none
and this is driving me CRAZY
And I HAVE googled for more than a week now but still have not been able to solve this problem.
I know I am missing something but Ive tried so many things like..
installing ngrok (still doing this)
installing openssl 1.0.1l
installing curl (php supports this. checked from phpinfo())
Here is the listener script that I've come up with so far
<?php
require_once('appvars.php');
require_once('connectvars.php');
$dbc = mysqli_connect(DB_HOST, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, DB_NAME);
// CONFIG: Enable debug mode. This means we'll log requests into 'ipn.log' in the same directory.
// Especially useful if you encounter network errors or other intermittent problems with IPN (validation).
// Set this to 0 once you go live or don't require logging.
define("DEBUG", 1);
// Set to 0 once you're ready to go live
define("USE_SANDBOX", 1);
define("LOG_FILE", "./ipn.log");

$myPost = array();

if (count($keyval) == 2)
$myPost[$keyval[0]] = urldecode($keyval[1]);
}
// read the post from PayPal system and add 'cmd'

if(function_exists('get_magic_quotes_gpc')) {

It seems the verification of certificate failed. You can bypass the verification by changing CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER to false: curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, 0).

Paypal IPN Message Page

I have a website, where in order to purchase items, you need to purchase story currency, which are some keys.
The problem is that after purchasing the keys with paypal button, I want to get IPN message with payment status, customer email, payment data and things like that but I don't know how to do this.
I saw a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaNCInXOTIQ min 3.42 where it's basically use $_REQUEST['payment_status'] and other $_REQUEST variables to do this, but when I read the paypal api docs, it says that I need to somehow validate the IPN to see if it's really paypal and things like that. Can someone help me with this IPN page?
I need help with the validation part and how to get data from paypal.
On the PayPal website, set your ipn url to the url of paypal_ipn.php.
You can get what you need after if (strcmp ($res, "VERIFIED") == 0).
As instructed below, you'll need to check if the payment_status is Completed, before delivering your product.
