I am having a problem with move_uploaded_file().
I am trying to upload a image path to a database, which is working perfectly and everything is being uploaded and stored into the database correctly.
However, for some reason the move_uploaded_file is not working at all, it does not produce the file in the directory where I want it to, in fact it doesn't produce any file at all.
The file uploaded in the form has a name of leftfileToUpload and this is the current code I am using.
$filetemp = $_FILES['leftfileToUpload']['tmp_name'];
$filename = $_FILES['leftfileToUpload']['name'];
$filetype = $_FILES['leftfileToUpload']['type'];
$filepath = "business-ads/".$filename;
This is the code for moving the uploaded file.

Try using the real path to the directory you wish to upload to.
For instance "/var/www/html/website/business-ads/".$filename
Also make sure the web server has write access to the folder.
You need to check following details :
1) Check your directory "business-ads" exist or not.
2) Check your directory "business-ads" has permission to write files.
You need to give permission to write in that folder.
make sure that your given path is correct in respect to your current file path.
you may use.

I am using move_uploaded_file function to save my file into two folders, the folders name are uploads_meeting_document and uploads_filing_file. It just can let me upload my file to this folder name uploads_meeting_document, it can't save to uploads_filing_filefolder. Anyone can guide me which part I have problem in below the coding:

In your example, the second move_uploaded_file does not work, because the file was already moved to /upload_meeting_document
You will need to copy your file from there:
...
$uploads_dir2 = 'uploads_filing_file';
copy($uploads_dir.'/'.$pname, $uploads_dir2.'/'.$pname);
In case this does not work, you may have insufficient permissions for the /uploads_filing_file directory. Chech its owner and permissions.

I have created a Social Networking project in which there is a module which allows user to upload photos..
I have hosted this project in my college server
I access that server using bitvise client with my server credentials.
My problem is i don't know how to setup upload mechanism for remote server ... In my localhost i simply use
move_uploaded_file($_FILES['file']['tmp_name'],$target_file);
function but i don't know how to do this for remote server ...
I tried FTP by looking at some tutorials but that didn't worked for me.
In my project structure there is a directory
users/user_id (diff for all users)/photos
here i want to place the uploaded files....
A proper description with example and proper functioning might be very helpful for me.... Thank you

Small tutorial how to upload file.
For sure, you need correct encryption and file's type in your form (ommited other fields, to clear example):

In $_FILES you have all data of uploaded file. In given example, we have field named test.
Advice, to always first check error $_FILES['test']['error'] - the values you can find in here.
If this is correct, then prepare upload path. Some advices:
remember that if you use original filename ($_FILES['test']['name']), then is User upload second file, with same name, you will need overwrite file or ignore upload. Other way, is to save data to database and generate temporary name form him.
destination path(target_file) - regardless if upload folder is in the same catalog, you should always use global path, as good practice. You can use DIR for that.
don't use in path data, like email - is you have project, and want give opportunity to change email in configuration, what you will do with files? Better save user to Database and use his ID as key.
If you have path, then you simply need only use of move_uploaded_file, but remember to check result, as it not always will return true. You can have error, when you don't have permissions to destination folder (you'll need debug this).
I see that you, first upload file, then rename (then you should check, if rename was success). Don't extends this process, if it not necessary. Upload file for final path and name.

Use a relative path to the uploads folder. For example, if your uploads folder is placed outside your current folder. Then

The above code will work both in local and remote server.

Another important note is to make uploads folder writable otherwise file upload wont work.
In my project I have a folder secure in root. The project package looks like:

Inside secure folder I am uploading some images on form submit using

and it is working properly. Now while on editing the details, using another form, if I am uploading a new image instead of the current image file, I want to unlink the current one and then upload new file.
For this I am using the code:

I also tried with
unlink('/secure/'.$data['row']->videothumbnail);
where $data['row']->videothumbnail) is the current image file from database. New file is successfully uploaded. But old file is not getting unlinked. I have set the permission of secure folder to 777. But the images are uploaded with read only permission. Is it because of this, it is not getting unlinked?
Can anyone help me to solve this?

Try this:
Set the permission dynamically using:
#chmod('./secure/'.$data['row']->videothumbnail, 0777);
then try unlink:
#unlink('./secure/'.$data['row']->videothumbnail);
Try echoing the path that you are providing to unlink function.
It should be something like this:
base_url()."secure/".$data['row']->videothumbnail;
I also had this issue even after setting the right permission on the folder. But the following code worked for me.

Try to use $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] instead of base_url

I think you are just making a stupid mistake.
Firstly, the first param of unlink should be a relative path or absolute path, but base_url function will return you a path contains domain name, HOW CAN YOU DELETE A FILE ON REMOTE SERVER ?
Secondly, '/secure/'.$data['row']->videothumbnail here is not a relative path but a absolute path
YOU MUST change it into /the/absolute/path/to/secure/ or ./the/relative/path/to/secure/ (DO NOT MISS THE DOT)
use this to unlink

**FCPATH** - path to front controller, usually index.php
**APPPATH** - path to application folder
**BASEPATH** - path to system folder.
I'm trying to push a file to a Amazon s3 filebucket.
I'm posting the file through an html form.
I try to generate a path to the file like this($file is a part of a foreach, because i need to support multiple files in a form-submit.)
$file['tmp_name'].'/'.$file['name'];
this outputs a filepath like this
/Applications/MAMP/tmp/php/phpZDcVQv/pdf.pdf
/Applications/MAMP/tmp/php/ exists, but nothing is inside it. I have set access read and write for everyone to that folder.
I use a library to post the images to Amazon: https://github.com/tpyo/amazon-s3-php-class It also complains that the filepath i have provided doesn't exist. It's running a check like:
if (!file_exists($file) || !is_file($file) || !is_readable($file))
How come the files aren't added?
Am I referencing the wrong folder? The file with the code is in /web/projectname/
Someone on the internet said something unclear about php removing the temp-file directly. Is this after the response has been run? Do I need to address this in some way?
The most simple code that generates the problem:

This echo:es false even if files have been uploaded.
$filepath contains the path i described above.
as the manual states:
$_FILES['userfile']['tmp_name']
The temporary filename of the file in which the uploaded file was stored on the server.
and
$_FILES['userfile']['name']
The original name of the file on the client machine.
this means that file_exists($file['tmp_name']) should be true.
The path $file['tmp_name'].'/'.$file['name'] is bogus, since $file['name'] is there only for informing you of the original name, but this name is not used while saving the uploaded file on the server.
So in your example /Applications/MAMP/tmp/php/phpZDcVQv is actually the uploaded file.
I have searched far and wide on this one, but haven't really found a solution.
Got a client that wants music on their site (yea yea, I know..). The flash player grabs the single file called song.mp3 and plays it.
Well, I am trying to get functionality as to be able to have the client upload their own new song if they ever want to change it.
So basically, the script needs to allow them to upload the file, THEN overwrite the old file with the new one. Basically, making sure the filename of song.mp3 stays intact.
I am thinking I will need to use PHP to
1) upload the file
2) delete the original song.mp3
3) rename the new file upload to song.mp3
Does that seem right? Or is there a simpler way of doing this? Thanks in advance!

a standard form will suffice for the upload just remember to include the mime in the form. then you can use $_FILES[''] to reference the file.
then you can check for the filename provided and see if it exists in the file system using file_exists() check for the file name OR if you don't need to keep the old file, you can use perform the file move and overwrite the old one with the new from the temporary directory
