I am provided with a user name and password of Magento 2 template where I can access the admin panel online.
But my intention is to get access to source code in order to change the menu and some other sliders.
How to get to the source code of the template?
it seems you are bit new. Now to change the slider or menus you can do them using both admin panel or source code depending upon how the site has been coded. Since you only have back end access you cannot get the source code at the moment. You can request your site administrator for the code and once you have it , you can go to root/app/design/frondend/[your-package]/[your-template]/template/page/html/header.phtml and see if you can see the menu items. If not then search for and cms syntax you can see, if you find one , copy the name and go to backend and in CMS in static blocks and in the identifier copy your name and search. You will get your code, change it and you are good to go. It might sound easy but make sure you have someone who has bit experience or things might go wrong.
To get your current template and package go to System->Configuration->Design in that you can find the names. All the best :)

I am to develop a Joomla 3.1 Template. The template should consist of a static header and footer, as well as multiple pages, all of which need their own styling. Further, the client would like to be able to add 'events' to a specific listings page. Customers should be able to book said events via a simple form.
Thanks to some really basic guides, I have the header and footer down, as well as some simple template options. However, I am now running into some problems;
How would I approach the content section? Ideally, a page would consist of multiple, editable sections. The client would be able to edit said sections in the backend without having to deal with or accidentally changing the layout or styling of the page itself. Since there are multiple pages, I obviously need different views/containers for each of them. Is this possible and if so, how?
Another problem is the documentation, which I found to be very lacking. Even google only got me so far (basic structure, index.php, templateDetails.xml and so forth). Are there any other resources I may have missed or do I really need to refer to other templates (most of which, obviously, aren't free) and use var_dump all the time?
Writing this, I just realized that I could theoretically build a template for every single page but ... that surely can't be right, right?
If someone could provide a basic outline or at least tell me how you personally would tackle a project like this, it'd be very much appreciated.
All the best
Edit;
I just found some video tutorials but since my bandwidth is limited, I cannot watch them. Please take this into account when writing an answer. Thanks.
I have only one word for you :

Joomla revolves around menu items that point to components. For each menu item, you can assign modules to different positions within the template to create a unique page. You only need one template if you really understand how Joomla templating works.
Joomla has very good documentation here - http://docs.joomla.org/
Few things to remember -
Component - this is a type of content or app of sorts. A component will define what content is and how it is displayed. This can be anything from blog articles and categories to an event registration system to a message board or social network. Menu items generally will point to a view in a component.
Modules - these are used to display additional content around the component output. This can be a menu, or a login box, or a weather widget or anything else you can come up with. Modules can be assigned to or excluded from the various menu items on your site.
Plugin - plugins are used to change the final output on a site. They can be used to insert Youtube videos, or forms within content, or even to alter the meta tags on a page.
Understanding how extensions work is an important first step. Once you get how those work, learning how templates and template overrides work will give you most of what you need to know to build a basic Joomla site.
I just recently started working with a Magento site, and so far I'm really not liking it. I need to remove a couple links from the main navigation, but I can't seem to find the option for it. I've googled it numerous times, and all I see are examples for coding the navigation. My question is, can you edit the site navigation like you can with say wordpress? Seeing how it's a cms I'd imagine the user should be able to make changes to the navigation using some type of interface, and without having to pull the files from the server and edit them.
Also just out of curiosity, for anyone experienced with Magento would you say it's a good choice for a cms? I've heard of it before, but haven't seen many sites that use it.
No!, so you have three options here.
Learn how to extend the navigation with the 100's of tutorials out there, it is really not that hard, assuming you have a theme you just have to edit app/design/frontend/[theme]/default/template/page/html/topmenu.phtml
Get an extension to do it for you.
Hire a developer to do it for you, we create a static block with installer for the html which make it slightly more user friendly to update in the future.
Stackoverflow is a bad place to ask questions like this, it is aimed at programmers and doing such a procedure is rudimentary stuff, I really hope you are a client trying to be cheap rather than someone who claims they can run this site.
Edit: The cms features are ok but you need to be able to code to set them all up so the end user can make the changes with WYSIWYG.
If you don't want to code for navigation then you can do below things
1) Create category and then Display Settings=>Display Mode=>static block only and Display Settings=>CMS Block=>static block name. In static block u can include in page url or custom page
2)You need to hire developer
If you're using Magento and have an integrated WordPress blog, it's possible to design a completely custom menu in the WordPress Admin using the menu builder. You have complete control over what menu items you want and the hierarchy of each item.
To get this to work, you need to integrate your WordPress blog using WordPress Integration in full integration mode. Your Magento template also has to be using the default Topmenu block.
I know very little of WP aside form it being a CMS geared towards (or started from) blogging, but may people have found the product capable of functioning as their sites CMS.
I was recently asked to write a PHP app to signup, (with email confirm and email notification to admin), login to make and manage orders. - so a user can register and get an email confirmation... once they are approved, they can log in, and place an order. and manage their information. There is also an admin section to manage the users and requests... ALL very straight ahead.
So I write it - and test it and everything is fine... Until the client tells me that it's going to be part of a WP site.
Problem, the client ONLY knows HTML, NOT PHP... I don't know WP.
When I upload a directory to the root - and try to run the app, I get redirect to /$url .. and a page not found displaying in the WP theme.
I have a feeling it has to do with the AUTH module I'm using... but there is a huge BIG PICTURE issue I need to conquer - how to integrate an existing PHP app into a WP site...
Q: how do I reference and use the WP emailing system?
thx - I know it's a broad question. but if someone can point me into a direction...
I have read the post regarding templates in WP and setting up a template with PHP code so it's executed... but it seems 'wrong' to have to create a template for each php page.
What your app is about ? If you got only the Auth module already coded you should only import user and password because WP does this out-of-the-box.
Wordpress can be twist up for your need but you need to do it in the WP way :).
If you want to add some functions to it check out the plugin library on wordpress.org. If you know wordpress and no plugin match your needs then the best way to go is writing your own plugin : https://codex.wordpress.org/Writing_a_Plugin
Or maybe just add your custom functions into functions.php, see https://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development#Functions_File
For pages, you basically have to type of it in WP : articles - i.e. blog posts - and the static pages. You can add some custom one check https://codex.wordpress.org/Post_Types
I know this answer is more a bunch of links but if you don't nothing about WP you should first learn how it works before try to hack it.
Hope it helps !
I am building a very simple website ( http://driz.co.uk/beta/ ) using CakePHP to show a portfolio of my work as well a few pages such as about me and contact. I was thinking of just creating each item for my portfolio as a page inside the /views/pages/ folder but seen as I'm wanting to learn a bit about CakePHP I thought it would be probably better to use a database and store each item in a simple table.
What I need to do is have a simple page like /portfolio/ which lists all my work to date and then links to each item I have so for example /portfolio/my-awesome-work/
I also need to list the items in the sidebar as shown in the link.
For each portfolio item I will need a title, a body (which will store the content and images for each item) and also the client information. I don't need any image upload capabilities as I will be just adding the HTML for it in the database table.
If anyone can help it'd be much appreciated.
Thanks
Hopefully you aren't asking for a full solution (frowned upon on SO)
First follow the blog tutorial : http://book.cakephp.org/view/1528/Blog
This is a great place to start as it walks you through all the basics.
As for your particular problem. Creating a portfolios table with all the fields you mentioned and baking the code (you'll know what that means when you follow the tutorial) as a starting point will get you half way there.
You could also add in an admin area to manage your system. This would mean you'd need to create a users table and add the Auth component
I have been asked to upload a Zen Cart site to my servers and have done so fine.
I am getting a problem now with the fact that the client has uploaded his custom template into the includes/templates folder and selected it in the admin - but it still wont load it. instead it just loads the template_default style.
I am been through every document I can find and have performed the 'reset' of the Layout Boxes Controller, but nothing seems to resolve it.
Can anyone tell me if there's a file I need to tweak or something to make sure it loads my custom style?
Cheers,
C.
One solution would be to overwrite the default theme with yours. I know this is not what you are asking, however, it would solve your issue.
Zen Cart templates can be really simple or really complex. So installing them can be easy or complicated. The files are probably in the wrong place, or not completely installed. It's easy to make a mistake. Just in case, here's the outline:
1a. Simple - Copy the cart template files to includes/templates/your_template_name/.
or
1b. complex - Copy the cart template folders to includes/.
2 Go to Admin > Tools > Template Selection and click Edit.
Select your_template_name. (If you don't see your_template_name something has gone wrong.)
3 Many templates install with the sideboxes turned off. Go to Admin > Tools > Layout Boxes Controller and edit the sideboxes to turn them on.
One idea for trouble-shooting ...
Look at the database template_select table. What template_dir is set?
If this is happening, double check the file includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/template_info.php. This file is used by the system to determine if a folder under includes/templates is actually a template, and things won't work without this file. Once you've set this file up, go back to admin->tools->template selection and try re-selecting your custom template.
