the maximal packet size limit by increasing the value of
max_allowed_packet in my.cnf file. On Debian: sudo nano
/etc/mysql/my.cnf, set max_allowed_packet = 64M (you can
tweak/decrease this value when error 2006 is gone), then sudo
/etc/init.d/mysql restart.

Notice that MySQL option files do not have their commands already available as comments (like in php.ini for instance). So you must type any change/tweak in my.cnf or my.ini and place them in mysql/data directory or in any of the other paths, under the proper group of options such as [client], [myslqd], etc. For example:

wait_timeout = 600
max_allowed_packet = 64M
Then restart the server. To get their values, type in the mysql client:
> select ##wait_timeout;
> select ##max_allowed_packet;
For me this solution didn't work out so I executed
SET GLOBAL max_allowed_packet=1073741824;
in my SQL client.
If not able to change this with MYSql service running, you should stop the service and change the variable in "my.ini" file.
For example:
max_allowed_packet=20M
If you are working on XAMPP then you can fix the MySQL Server has gone away issue with following changes..
open your my.ini file
my.ini location is (D:\xampp\mysql\bin\my.ini)
change the following variable values
max_allowed_packet = 64M
innodb_lock_wait_timeout = 500
If you are running with default values then you have a lot of room to optimize your mysql configuration.
The first step I recommend is to increase the max_allowed_packet to 128M.
Then download the MySQL Tuning Primer script and run it. It will provide recommendations to several facets of your config for better performance.
Also look into adjusting your timeout values both in MySQL and PHP.
How big (file size) is the file you are importing and are you able to import the file using the mysql command line client instead of PHPMyAdmin?
If you are using MAMP on OS X, you will need to change the max_allowed_packet value in the template for MySQL.
You can find it at: File > Edit template > MySQL my.cnf
Then just search for max_allowed_packet, change the value and
save.
I had this error and other related ones, when I imported at 16 GB SQL file. For me, editing my.ini and setting the following (based on several different posts) in the [mysqld] section:
max_allowed_packet = 110M
innodb_buffer_pool_size=511M
innodb_log_file_size=500M
innodb_log_buffer_size = 800M
net_read_timeout = 600
net_write_timeout = 600
If you are running under Windows, go to the control panel, services, and look at the details for MySQL and you will see where my.ini is. Then after you edit and save my.ini, restart the mysql service (or restart the computer).
If you are using HeidiSQL, you can also set some or all of these using that.
I solved my issue with this short /etc/mysql/my.cnf file :
[mysqld]
wait_timeout = 600
max_allowed_packet = 100M
The other reason this can happen is running out of memory. Check /var/log/messages and make sure that your my.cnf is not set up to cause mysqld to allocate more memory than your machine has.
Your mysqld process can actually be killed by the kernel and then re-started by the "safe_mysqld" process without you realizing it.
Use top and watch the memory allocation while it's running to see what your headroom is.
make a backup of my.cnf before changing it.
I got same issue with

In \xampp\mysql\bin\my.ini file of phpmyadmin we get only

which is just for mysqldump -u root -p dbname . I resolved my issue by replacing above code with
max_allowed_packet=110M

I updated "max_allowed_packet" to 1024M, but it still wasn't working. It turns out my deployment script was running:
mysql --max_allowed_packet=512M --database=mydb -u root < .\db\db.sql
Be sure to explicitly specify a bigger number from the command line if you are donig it this way.
If your data includes BLOB data:
Note that an import of data from the command line seems to choke on BLOB data, resulting in the 'MySQL server has gone away' error.
To avoid this, re-create the mysqldump but with the --hex-blob flag:

which will write out the data file with hex values rather than binary amongst other text.
PhpMyAdmin also has the option "Dump binary columns in hexadecimal notation (for example, "abc" becomes 0x616263)" which works nicely.
Note that there is a long-standing bug (as of December 2015) which means that GEOM columns are not converted:

so using a program like PhpMyAdmin seems to be the only workaround (the option noted above does correctly convert GEOM columns).
If it takes a long time to fail, then enlarge the wait_timeout variable.
If it fails right away, enlarge the max_allowed_packet variable; it it still doesn't work, make sure the command is valid SQL. Mine had unescaped quotes which screwed everything up.
Also, if feasible, consider limiting the number of inserts of a single SQL command to, say, 1000. You can create a script that creates multiple statements out of a single one by reintroducing the INSERT... part every n inserts.
i got a similar error.. to solve this just open my.ini file..here at line no 36 change the value of maximum allowed packet size ie. max_allowed_packet = 20M
Make sure mysqld process does not restart because of service managers like systemd.
I had this problem in vagrant with centos 7. Configuration tweaks didn't help. Turned out it was systemd which killed mysqld service every time when it took too much memory.

For GoDaddy shared hosting
On GoDaddy shared hosting accounts, it is tricky to tweak the PHP.ini etc files. However, there is another way and it just worked perfectly for me. (I just successfully uploaded a 3.8Mb .sql text file, containing 3100 rows and 145 cols. Using the IMPORT command in phpMyAdmin, I was getting the dreaded MySQL server has gone away error, and no further information.)
I found that Matt Butcher had the right answer. Like Matt, I had tried all kinds of tricks, from exporting MySQL databases in bite-sized chunks, to writing scripts that break large imports into smaller ones. But here is what worked:
(1) CPANEL ---> FILES (group) ---> BACKUP
(2a) Under "Partial Backups" heading...
(2b) Under "Download a MySQL Database Backup"
(2c) Choose your database and download a backup (this step optional, but wise)
(3a) Directly to the right of 2b, under heading "Restore a MySQL Database Backup"
(3b) Choose the .SQL import file from your local drive
(3c) True happiness will be yours (shortly....) Mine took about 5 seconds
I was able to use this method to import a single table. Nothing else in my database was affected -- but that is what step (2) above is intended to protect against.
Notes:
a. If you are unsure how to create a .SQL import file, use phpMyAdmin to export a table and modify that file structure.

I was getting the same error as you when importing a .sql file into my database via Sequel Pro.
The error still persisted after upping the max_allowed_packet to 512M so I ran the import in the command line instead with:
mysql --verbose -u root -p DatabaseName < MySQL.sql
It gave the following error:
ASCII '\0' appeared in the statement, but this is not allowed unless option --binary-mode is enabled

In my case, my .sql file was a little corrupt or something. The MySQL dump we get comes in two zip files that need to be concatenated together and then unzipped. I think the unzipping was interrupted initially, leaving the file with some odd characters and encodings. Getting a fresh MySQL dump and unzipping it properly worked for me.
Just wanted to add this here in case others find that increasing the max_allowed_packet variable was not helping.
None of the solutions regarding packet size or timeouts made any difference for me. I needed to disable ssl

I have a ~450MB .db (sqllite3) file that I need to import into my local phpmyadmin server on XAMPP. I went through the following steps to make this happen but all of them failed.
-I used sqlitebrowser to create a SQL dump of the .db file.
-When directly importing into phpmyadmin did not work I edited the php.ini to have the following properties:
upload_max_filesize = 500MB
post_max_size = 500MB
memory_limit = 512MB
max_execution_time = 3600
then tried again, without success. Even though phpmyadmin says I can import files of 500MB it still gives me a error that my file might be too large.
-I tried using both BigDump and manual CLI script for importing the dump for it but both of them return an error stating 'the system cannot find the file specified' and 'Can't open eve.sql for import'
At this point I am out of ideas. I would prefer however to make the changes to my local server so that it can import files of such size in the future as I plan to parse some YAML files and use them to update the database using a php script.
How about using the mysql command line utility
mysql -p -u user -h 127.0.0.1 database < data.sql
It usually handles big imports without problems
If you just have one big database, use a sql-splitter or use mysqldumper for import, export and querys. Works on local and live environment without need of shell (SSH) access.
I am trying to import a large .sql data file using phpMyAdmin in XAMPP. However this is taking a lot of time and I keep getting:

The is the config file for php.ini in xampp, for some reason i still get

There's a configuration variable within the phpMyAdmin directory that you can find in phpmyadmin\config.inc.php called $cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] that you can set to whatever maximum execution time you need.
Well, to get rid of this you need to set phpMyadmin variable to either 0 that is unlimited or whichever value in seconds you find suitable for your needs. Or you could always use CLI(command line interface) to not even get such errors(For which you would like to take a look at this link.
Now about the error here, first on the safe side make sure you have set PHP parameters properly so that you can upload large files and can use maximum execution time from that end. If not, go ahead and set below three parameters from php.ini file,
max_execution_time=3000000 (Set this as per your req)
post_max_size=4096M
upload_max_filesize=4096M
Once that's done get back to finding phpMyadmin config file named something like "config.default.php". On XAMPP you will find it under "C:\xampp\phpMyAdmin\libraries" folder. Open the file called config.default.php and set :
$cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] = 0;
Once set, restart your MySQL and Apache and go import your database.

You're trying to import a huge dataset via a web interface.
By default PHP scripts run in the context of a web server have a maximum execution time limit because you don't want a single errant PHP script tying up the entire server and causing a denial of service.
For that reason your import is failing. PHPMyAdmin is a web application and is hitting the limit imposed by PHP.
You could try raising the limit but that limit exists for a good reason so that's not advisable. Running a script that is going to take a very long time to execute in a web server is a very bad idea.
PHPMyAdmin isn't really intended for heavy duty jobs like this, it's meant for day to day housekeeping tasks and troubleshooting.
Your best option is to use the proper tools for the job, such as the mysql commandline tools. Assuming your file is an SQL dump then you can try running the following from the commandline:
mysql -u(your user name here) -p(your password here) -h(your sql server name here) (db name here) < /path/to/your/sql/dump.sql
Or if you aren't comfortable with commandline tools then something like SQLYog (for Windows), Sequel Pro (for Mac), etc may be more suitable for running an import job

If you got Maximum execution time 300 exceeded in DBIMysqli.class.php file. Open the following file in text editor
C:\xampp\phpMyAdmin\libraries\config.default.php then
search the following line of code:
$cfg[‘ExecTimeLimit’] = 300;
and change value 300 to 900.

Simply set $cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] = 0; In xampp/phpMyAdmin/libraries/config.default.php.

And make this below changes in php.ini file as per file size.

But make sure 'post_max_size' and 'memory_limit' should be more than upload_max_filesize.

If you are using the laragon and your database is phpMyAdmin the process is the same for tackle this error.
Open laragon right-click on it and open php.ini file
set these value accordingly to your needs
max_execution_time
post_max_size
upload_max_filesize
Open new file config.default.php
path is C:\laragon\etc\apps\phpMyAdmin\libraries\config.default.php
and set the value of this $cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] = 0;
Restart the laragon.

Is it a .sql file or is it compressed (.zip, .gz, etc)? Compressed formats sometimes require more PHP resources so you could try uncompressing it before uploading.
However, there are other methods you can try also. If you have command-line access, just upload the file and import with the command line client mysql (once at the mysql> prompt, use databasename; then source file.sql).
Otherwise you can use the phpMyAdmin "UploadDir" feature to put the file on the server and have it appear within phpMyAdmin without having to also upload it from your local machine.

WAMPServer phpMyadmin Maximum execution time of 360 seconds exceeded
After trying many things with no success, I've managed to get SSH access to the server, and import my 80Mb database with a command line, instead of phpMyAdmin. Here is the command:
mysql -u root -p -D mydatabase -o < mydatabase.sql
It's much easier to import big databases, if you are running xammp on windows, the path for mysql.exe is C:\xampp\mysql\bin\mysql.exe
1-make a search in your local drive and type "php.ini"
2-you may see many files named php.ini you should choose the one that fits with your php version (see localhost)
3-open the php.ini file make a search on "max_execution_time" then make it equal to "-1" to make it unlimited
Never change original config.default.php file.
Changing general executing time in php.ini has no effect on phpmyadmin scripts.
Use a new config.inc.php or the config.sample.inc.php provided in the /phpMyAdmin folder instead.
You can set $cfg[‘ExecTimeLimit’] = 0; means endless execution in the config.inc.php as recommended above. Be aware this is not a "normal" ini file. Its a php script, so you need a open <?php at the beginning of that file.
But most important: Do not use this procedure at all! phpmyadmin is okay for small database but not for huge databases with several MB or GB.
You have other tools on a server to handle the import.
a) If you have a server admin
system like Plesk, use there database import tool.
b) use ssh commands to make database dump or to write databases directly in
mysql via ssh. Commands below.
Create a database dump:
mysqldump DBname --add-drop-table -h DBhostname -u DBusername -pPASSWORD > databasefile.sql
Write a database to mysql:
mysql -h rdbms -u DBusername -pPASSWORD DBname < databasefile.sql
Best solution for this error when i tried some points.
Follow this steps to solve this issue:
locate the file [XAMPP Installation Directory]\php\php.ini (e.g. C:\xampp\php\php.ini)
open php.ini in Notepad or any Text editor
locate the line containing max_execution_time and
increase the value from 30 to some larger number (e.g. set: max_execution_time = 90)
then restart Apache web server from the XAMPP control panel
Changing the max_execution_timeout in php.ini. may help with maximum execution error. but sometimes the database is imported correctly but still it shows maximum execution time error, it can be due to some error of xamp.
I was experiencing the same error even after making all changes in php.ini. which is mentioned above and realized that all the things, tables of database were imported and it was working fine but it was still showing the max_execution_timeout error.
Set Only 3 Parameters from php.ini file of your server
A. max_execution_time = 3000000 (Set as per your requirment)
B. post_max_size = 4096M
C. upload_max_filesize = 4096M
Case 1 : If you are Using Xampp, Edit
C:\xampp\phpMyAdmin\libraries\config.default.php
Case 2 : If you are Using Wampp, Edit
c:\wamp64\apps\phpMyAdmin\libraries\config.default.php
Case 3 : If you are Using Laragon, Edit
C:\laragon\etc\apps\phpMyAdmin\libraries\config.default.php
search for $cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] in config.default.php file and make the following changes
$cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] = 0;
After all set, restart your server and import again your database.
Done
You can increase the limit:
ini_set('max_execution_time', 3000);
(Note that this script can cause high memory usage as well, so you probably have to increase that as well)
Other possible solution: Chunk your sql file, and process it as parts. I assume, it is not one big SQL query, is it?
Update: As #Isaac pointed out, this is about PHPMyAdmin. In this case set max_execution_timeout in php.ini. (The location depends on your environment)
The following might help you:
ini_set('max_execution_time', 100000);
And in your mysql - max_allowed_packet=100M in some cases where queries are too long sql also produce and error "MySQL server has gone away";
Change the values to whatever you need.
I have changed my upload and post limit options to 8000 M. However, when I try to import a table from a text file that's only 12.4 MB I get an error saying:
You probably tried to upload too large file. Please refer to documentation for ways to workaround this limit.
Is 8000 M to big?
Be careful not to exceed the 32 bit signed integer limit (if you're using 32bit versions) as it will cause your script to fail.

First make sure to check these values in php.ini
max_execution_time
max_input_time
memory_limit
I would also lower your post_max_size and upload_max_size to a more reasonable level (like maybe 128 or 256M)
Also if you really need to get the data in, you could do it from the command line

Create a directory called ‘upload’ within the phpmyadmin directory. ?

Then place the large sql file that you are trying to import into the
new upload directory. Now when you go onto the db import page within
phpmyadmin console you will notice a drop down present that wasn’t
there before – it contains all of the sql files in the upload

If you’re not using WAMP on Windows, then I’m sure you’ll be able to
adapt this to your environment without too much trouble.
I believe the problem is that you have exceeded the 3.2 GB limit (8,000 MB) imposed by a 32 bit process, with PHP. As such, you likely can not use the full 8,000 MB as you have specified. I have had PHP hang on code when processing close to 2000 MB as memory to use with a 32 bit PHP.
